So I am minding my own business doing the second gunshow of the weekend, this morning, when I spy a nifty Winchester Winchester Model 37 on a table. I pick it up and begin inspection of it. The table holder relays how he is selling it for a widow and "the story" goes the now deceased husband bought it 60+ years ago. He loaded it and set it in the corner for home protection and it apparently never got fired? I take these stories with a grain of salt and judge the gun on THE GUN and take stories for what they cost me (nothing!). But this gun is indeed MINT and I inspect the face of the breech as best I can and NO shell detonation imprint appears on it at all! So be that. Then I inspect the barrel marking and it says "16 Gauge" - "2 3/4" Chamber" - "Choke". My question is this - I have never seen a Model 37 with a choke designation of "Choke". I assume this is an "Improved" type choke or possibly even MORE open than Improved? Anyone have any ideas on this? Anyway I was VERY happy with the price I paid for it and its been 10 or 12 years since I bought a Model 37. I believe over the decades I have owned (and shot!) all gauges of Winchester Model 37's including 12 gauge, 16 gauge, 20 gauge, 28 gauge and 410. I wish I had kept them all - it would be kind of nifty to have a full set of Model 37's for display. Appreciate any advice/opinions on this one Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

I just picked up a really nice, possibly unfired Winchester 37 410 a few weeks ago. I think all 37's were full choke as 21 stated above. Nice find. It would be nice to have the whole set as they are neat guns.

Robertacabin: Ooowwwhhhh.... how I would love to have ONE of the Model 37 410's back that I have owned in the past. They indeed are just COOL guns - simple, safe and solid. Deep in one of my Winchester books I just found this reference to the choke options on Model 37's: "In sales from 1936 to 1943 (of Model 37's!), 87% of all guns had FULL chokes, 11% had MODIFIED chokes and 2% were CYLINDER BORE or IMPROVED CYLINDER chokes". From "The Winchester Handbook - pages 254 and 255. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Anyone: I have a dial caliper and I could measure the inside barrel diameter at the muzzle of this 16 gauge shotgun - anyone have a breakdown as to the correlation of inside bore diameter at the muzzle and the choke designation on a 16 gauge? TIA Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
