This is a very early "870 ADL" in 16 gauge and the barrel is serial numbered to the receiver. It has a 28 inch, modified choke matte rib barrel. The old gal is solid with no chips or cracks in the wood but has a fair amount of bluing loss. I looked up the barrel code and I believe it was May of 1951. This is a solid old shooter! Payment by check of any sorts. First public "I will take this" trumps PM's. $600 plus the ride.

True but technically it isn't a plain barrel it is a "matte rib".

Me either.
That’s all my 1950’s era 870 16 gauge plain barrel model has.
A single bead front sight.

Nope, no ramp. Just a single bead at the end of a matte rib.

The five diamond hand cut checkering is always nice. It appears the stock was refinished on this?

On a 70 year old piece it is tough to tell but I don't believe it has. It has been carried and hunted but I believe it is unaltered. The guy I got it from claimed his Mother had bought it new. I already have another 870 16 that is a much later gun or I would be keeping this one.

I believe the 5 Diamond pattern was earlier than the corn cob but not sure. I believe it is the same checkering pattern as the 11-48 and 58's have.

My diamond pattern is second year production

I believe this to be 2nd or 3rd year. It looks like it may end up staying in my safe.

Actually .....

Matting applied ON a plain barrel.

No "rib".

Still a nice shotgun.

I believe you have the "5-Diamond Deluxe", a very nice little shotgun. More info:

The corncob forearm and the ADL were made during the same time period. Serial number on the barrel means its 55 or earlier. I have a 51 corncob and a 52 12 gauge like yours. That's just the upgraded stocks. Nice 870 , if I didn't already have a dozen or so id be interested.
