What scope is recommended for a 17 HMR?
I prefer fixed 6X on most of my rifles.

Just ordered one but haven't got it in hand yet. Planning to try a fixed 10x SWFA.

My 17 HMR is primarily used as a ground squirrel shooter, it has a 3-9 on it but I cannot remember ever having it moved off of 6X. For me that has more than adequate for use within 150 yards.

I have a 4.5x14 Burris with the E1 reticle. I use it for Prairie Dogs. I prefer higher x - usually leave it on 14.

I have 4-12x40 AOs on heavy barrels and a 3.5-10x36 AO Bushnell A17 on a light contour barrel Marlin 917S.

About the only time that I shoot a 17HMR is on pdog hunts while the centerfire rifles are cooling down and the varmints are within 150+/- yards.

Rimfire, or centerfire scope? Parallax issues?

Mine is a centerfire scope. I can't blame any miss on parallax, I just hold on hair at anywhere from 40 yards to 150 yards and my hit to miss ratio with it is probably the best of any of my rifles.

My most accurate rimfires at 50 yards are wearing 100 yard parallax scopes. I think parallax is overemphasized in most circumstances. If you are going to be shooting regularly at longer distances, then it really won't matter anyway.

I have a Sightron S2 3-9 with dots on my CZ452. I went 4 for 4 this morning on squirrels ( 3 young greys and one daddy fox) out of the strawberry patch. It is right at 90 yards from the back porch sand bags. You have to be careful as meat damage is unacceptable if you hit anything but head. Got them soaking in water for tomorrow morning breakfast.

I use a S&B 2.5-10x56 on my Anschutz 1717. Pretty much leave it on 10x. A fixed power scope at 10x would be great IMHO.

I always wanted to try a Fixed Power,but have never seen one. Hint.................

Mark shubert: Currently I am shooting/owning 5 (five) heavy barrel Rifles in caliber 17 HMR. I use them for Colony Varmints and some predator Hunting.
Additionally I have taken much small game and wild turkey with them as well.
I recommend more (much more!) scope power/versatility than a straight "6 power" on your 17 HMR Rifle - that caliber can certainly take advantage of it.
I have 2 (two) Rifles with Weaver V-16 (4 to 16 power) variables on them and 2 (two) Rifles with Burris 4.5x14 variable scopes on them.
My most humble 17 HMR (a N.E.F. Sportster) has a 3x9 power scope on it - and I am considering upping the power on it.

My favorite thing to hunt here in Ohio is squirrels. On my Tikka 17hmr, I put my SS 6X. I really like the reticle in the trees. The heavy inverted German 4 with a dot in the crosshair makes head shots easy. I love the adjustable parallax too. I have never used the Christmas tree part of the reticle for the rifle.

Well dead coons don't lie! In reality though the cheap Savage is accurate and feeds perfectly I just bought it to play with. My varmint hunting is coyotes and hogs mostly at night and I don't see the 17 HMR taking over those chores. I shot a couple cottontails with it and anything other than head shots proved way more destructive than I liked. It is safer to use near the house and only fragments of bullets have exited any of the dumpster raiders so far. I don't have to worry about the cows or horses in the surrounding pastures. I no longer shoot the crows because they keep the hawks occupied instead of scheming on my chickens.

I have a couple G3's....not quite as long. Use Abu old Suverains. Most likely best reels Abu ever produced.

Burris E1 4.5-14x42 with long range MOA reticle is a fine choice
