I use them for Colony Varmints and some predator Hunting. Additionally I have taken much small game and wild turkey with them as well. I recommend more (much more!) scope power/versatility than a straight "6 power" on your 17 HMR Rifle - that caliber can certainly take advantage of it. I have 2 (two) Rifles with Weaver V-16 (4 to 16 power) variables on them and 2 (two) Rifles with Burris 4.5x14 variable scopes on them. My most humble 17 HMR (a N.E.F. Sportster) has a 3x9 power scope on it - and I am considering upping the power on it. Best of luck with whichever you choose. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy
