My SIL is just starting to get into hunting and is looking for a 3-9x40 type 1" scope with a duplex style reticle. He is looking at the Leupold freedom line, which I have no experience with, what scope would you suggest in that price range?
It's going on a model 70 .270
Hard to go wrong with a Burris Fullfield II in that range. About the best glass you will get for under $200. Not the most tactile adjustments but they seem to track OK and hold up well to recoil.
OSU beat me to it
Burris
Leupold Freedom
Athlon Argos HMR
Burris Fullfield E1 with the regular plex reticle
In addition to the FFII, I'd also consider the Fullfield IV in a 2.5-10x42 with it's bigger 46' FOV for a new hunter.

If you can find one with the duplex, Iโd go with the Fullfield E1 for the dual bias springs. Someone posted a link to some for about $180 not long ago. Most have the new ballistic plex, which ainโt my favorite.
The E1 is the only one made in the Philippines, the others are China.

The latest Droptines are Philippines as well.
+2
I have 2 being shipped right now from Cameraland 4.5X14X42 Ballistic Plex for $189 each and 2 more 3X9X42 Ballistic Plex ordered but on backorder for $159, you can't beat the quality for the price.

As far as I know the Fullfield II's are made in the Philippines also, it's the Fullfield IV's that are China made. If I find my latest Fullfiled II's are China made, I'll be sending them back and cancelling my order for the other 2.
I have the IV in the mail in 3-12.
I really wanted the 2.5-10 due to wide field of view, perfect hunting set up.. But I like to stretch it out at the range and really like the 12 power over 10

Fullfield IIs are Philippine. Got about four of them.

(The rotating eye piece on the FFII is a nuisance if you plan to run scope caps)
What are the big differences between the E1 and the FFII?
Yeah another vote for the Burris Fullfield E1 3-9x40 ๐......The Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x40 is also a solid choice in your price range..Good luck...Hb
What are the big differences between the E1 and the FFII?
The Fullfield IIs have the Ballistic Plex as opposed to the new reticle and on the FF IIs turing the power ring turns the whole eyepiece. The guys who like lens covers do not like the rotating eyepiece.

I have a 2-7 FFII and I really dislike the rotating ocular bell.

I'll trade you a C note for it that you can put towards a new(er) one that you like better...
Of course, but make mine the 3-9x40 with ballistic plex reticle
Hypothetically: If you had 3 tikkas in 308 to choose from for a 10 points Colorado mule deer tag hunt.
One has a swfa 6x mil quad.
One has a fullfield e1 3-9x40
Or an fx-iii 6x42 with wide duplex m1 turrets.
Which one ya choosing?

Trick question time, eh?
๐
Any one of the three if the scope on it has been proven reliable by me. The 6x mil quad if I have to pick one of the three off a rack at random and go.
It's like the high-end 1911 or Glock to a gunfight question......
I like the one I have been using for several years.
I got this one for a step-grandson for his Mdl 70 '06. It also seems to be a good scope.

Except they all costs out the same.
I picked up a new Burris 3-9x40 E1 from Optics Planet just before Christmas, but haven't even opened the box since I'm not sure what I'm going to mount it on yet. It's one of Optics Planet's exclusives that has a standard plex reticle. I paid $179 with free shipping.
Just my $.02
Just a bit more gets you into a Meopta Optika 5, which is excellent at the price IMO.
Burris Fullfield E1 with the regular plex reticle
This. If it can be found. Fullfield II is 0.5 rch behind just if you don't like the full rotating ocular. Be interested in the FF IV if its not chinky. No more chinky anything if anything else if available.
The Signature and the FFIV are both made in China......

None would be me first choice but I wouldn't feel handicapped with any of them. Ha well, I wouldn't twist the Leupold's turrets. Never owned a swfa but the logic is sound for that price point
If your scope costs less than your deer tag, sum ting wong....
Handwerk: I would recommend the SIL look for a nice used Leupold 3x9x40mm scope - I see these on occasion for less than $250.00.
If'n the SIL plans to Hunt "Mt," on occasion I would also recommend looking for a used Leupold 3.5x10x40mm.
Good luck in your search.

I have heard alot of people complain about Leupold on this site but I have owned several and have never had one problem with them. I have owned several of the freedom line scopes and they were all great in my opinion. I would also have to second the Burris FFII. Either of those is a winner

Democrats running the fish and game? A basic Burris FFII is perfectly acceptable for a set and forget rifle at sane ranges and legal shooting.
Iโve been really happy with my VX-Freedom 3-9x40mm
I have a Burrid Fulfield E1, a Droptine, and a Leupold VX-Freedom in 3x9x40. I like them all but for pure simplicity I like the Leupold. Both of my Burris scopes are a little higher magnification. Looking at strictly3x9, you cant go wrong either way, find what one you get the best deal on and jump on it.
