Posted By: Ky221 Scope for Ruger No.1 - 03/02/21
I recently picked up a Ruger No. 1 .300h&h and am looking for a scope to put on it. I had originally planned on a trigicon accupoint 3-9x40, but soon ran into some issues. Not enough eye relief. Front objective touches the rear sight when sliding scope far enough to the rear to get a good sight picture. I do not wish to run an extended ring and I do not wish to remove the iron sights. Anyone else run into these issues? What did you end up doing to fix the issue? I'm thinking of maybe running a 1.5-5x20 to solve the problem I'm having; only issue with that is I'd prefer a little more magnification.

Thoughts ?

A 3-9x40 Zeiss Conquest worked for me. Maybe you can find a used one somebody will part with.

Mine wear a Minox ZA3 3-9×40 and a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10×42

If you're not scared to run a Leupold, I have had great results using a 6x36mm, 6x42mm and 2.5-8x36mm models without the need for an offset or the scope being scooted quite all the way back.

With the 2.5-8x36mm probably being my favorite but some people have to crawl the stock a little with it when you crank it all the way to 8x. Eye relief with this scope is very generous on the lower power range though.

I have also had decent results with the Swaro Z3 3-9x36mm.

Another that is working really well is the Tract Turion 3-9x40mm (discontinued). This scope has right at 4" of constant eye relief and is really easy to get behind. At 16oz, it adds a little weight on top and the large ocular restricts loading trough access somewhat with #4 rings.

Of the ones mentioned, the FX 6x42mm is probably the most forgiving to settle in behind with almost 4.5" of ER if I remember the specs right.

The 6x36mm and 2.5-8x36mm can each be used with #3 rings getting a very good cheek weld and the smaller ocular still gives you good access in the breech area.

Turning your rear sight around 180 degrees will all you to scoot the scope back just a RCH more without contact.

I like my No. 1's but scope mounting can be a challenge. I've settled on low power variables with straight tubes similar the 1.5-5 you mentioned, but do use an offset rear ring. I'd like more magnification on my 1S 300 H&H also, but haven't pursued it due to this. If $ were no object, I suppose a custom rib that would position the rings further back would be a good solution. I have a custom No. 3 with no rib and the scope bases thread directly to the barrel. Scope mounting is a non issue on this one...

A Leupold 2x7 might be a good choice for you. That's what I put on my 1A in 270 and don't have any issues with eye relief.

Zeiss Conquest MC 3-9X40 or Zeiss Conquest MC 4X. Both will fit with Ruger low rings, no need for off set rings. Both scopes have 4" eye relief. The 3-9X40 has constant 4" eye relief from 3 to 9 power.

3-9 on the No.1B, 4X on the No.1A

Your 300 H&H is a sweet looking rifle.
Posted By: Ky221 Re: Scope for Ruger No.1 - 03/02/21
Is that what you ran on it Fotis?

Kinda seems wrong for a rail to be on a #1 .......
Posted By: Fotis Re: Scope for Ruger No.1 - 03/02/21
No sir, The one above is a custom rifle in 25-06 AI 1:7 twist Benchmark barrel. I had Orygunsmithing build it, and we decided on this mount.

On the one you have, I had a 3x9x40 Burris E-1 illuminated. Worked great!

Also they do make extended rings for the #1.

My (3) #1 Rugers

a) 223 #1V made in 1999, I got in 2007. Many prairie dogs and ground squirrels have died.
It has a 1985 that I got in 2007 Vari X III in 6.5x20x40 boosted to 12x40x40 by Precision Reticle.
I put shorty weaver rail adapters on it.

b) 270win 1996. I got it in 2006.
It has a Leupold VX III LONG RANGE made in 2007 I got in 2007 6.5x20x50
I made an AR15 riser into a scope base for it.

c) 7mmRM 1977 I got it in 2005 and killed a lot of deer with it.
It wears a Leupold Vari X III 1.75x6x32 made in 1995, I got it in 2005
I put rubber eyepiece and Stoney Point turret on it
I put a grind to fit Limb saver recoil pad on it.... and did not grind it, to keep more area on the shoulder.

I got a running doe at 400 yards with the 7mmRM.... she stopped for a second.

Due to my screwed up neck, I need a scope mounted farther back than most people. The Leupold 1.5-5 + an extended ring did the trick for me. 6.5x55 1A.

No foul due to extenuating circumstances.

I know it's not fun with those extra parts in your spine.
Posted By: hookeye Re: Scope for Ruger No.1 - 03/03/21
For years I ran a reg AO 3-9x Vari X ii.
Normal rings.
Varmint rig, summer.....not bundled up.

Deer rig was RSI w m8 4x.
Used an ext ring at rear. Only needed a bit.

Another B model w a reg 3-9x Vari X ii.
Offset again at rear.

Have another B w Vari X iii 3.5-10x.
Yup, it will get an ext ring at rear.

My neck just doesnt work like it used to.

I have 6x36 Leupolds on Number 1's in 243, 7mm Rem, 300 H&H, and 375 H&H. Some are duplex and some are LRDs, no complaints on any of them.
Posted By: Ky221 Re: Scope for Ruger No.1 - 03/03/21
6x36 is what I'm gonna try.......if I can find one.

Leupold FX-II 6x36mm Matte - Wide Duplex for $299.99, while inventory lasts
Posted By: Ky221 Re: Scope for Ruger No.1 - 03/03/21
If it were a standard duplex I'd have already ordered it
Posted By: slickyboyboo Re: Scope for Ruger No.1 - 03/03/21
I have a VX-3 4.5-14x40, on my 300 WM No.1, and have no issues at all with eye relief.
Posted By: TxHunter80 Re: Scope for Ruger No.1 - 03/04/21
Mine wore a Swaro Z3 3-10x42. I always thought it was a good fit. No mounting issues or problems with eye relief

I would not use one of those hideous rails on a No.1... why do you not want to use an offset ring? Using an offset ring in the rear position allows you to use whatever you want, but just as importantly, it increases the strength of the mounting and your scope tubes ability to withstand an inadvertent knock or drop... all of my No.1's have the 4BO in the rear position. With the 4BO I use all of the standard VX-3 lineup on my No.1 rifles.

I had the same issue with my 1Ka in 257 Rob, I first put my favorite 2.5-8 x36 Luep but found the neck craning even with extended rings was too much. I ended up puttiing a silver VX 11 3x9 because it had better eye relief. I recently got a 200 anni 1B in 6mm that if I don't find a 1A in 270 to trade for by next season I will probably try a VX III 3x9 50 on.

My custom #1 wears a Leupold M8 6x, gloss finish- goes well with the rifle blued finish.

I've tried Ruger extension rings and it kinda sucks. Saw this (Weaver slip-over mount) on EABCO - I know it would be sacraligous to the purists. I'm a function before form type of guy wink

Id go EGW and have it machined to remove unused rail section.

Some nice pieces on here.
My dads 300 win came with a vx2 4-12.
Depending on what kind of terrain you hunt, 2-10 should cover thick to open
