I'm considering my first ever .17 HMR in the near future. Bolt action for use with a suppressor on rodent-type targets as far as the rifle will reach.

What are some good options for scoping it?

I put a old Burris Fullfield 6x on mine with a 1/2 minute Lee Dot reticule and it's as good as it gets for me. MB

I have a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 w/ ballistic plex on mine. I like it a lot.

This but E1 w/ long range MOA reticle

Mine has a 4-12X Leupold Vari X II AO / FD on it. I like the magnification range. I wish it had a hold-over reticle of some sort. Leupold's Tri MOA would do all I want. I don't think I need to twist knobs for the distances I shoot with it.

Agree with TOM 4-12 with AO is about ideal for the HMR.

YMMV

I just put a Hawke 4-12x40 AO https://us.hawkeoptics.com/vantage-4-12x40-ao-3030.html on mine. It was about $130 from Opticsplanet.com. Pretty nice scope.

I use an M8 Leupold 12x on my Ruger M77/17, fine crosshairs (duplex). Wouldn’t change a thing.

It works pretty well on PDs out to about 175 yards.

The Hawke Vantage 4-12x40 AO 30/30 #14140 is a very solid and dependable scope.

11 layer fully multi-coated optics for excellent clarity
Adjustable objective for parallax correction (AO models)
1 inch mono-tube chassis for superior strength
¼ MOA low profile ‘no-snag’ fingertip turrets
Fast focus eyebell and high torque zoom ring
Threaded objective/ocular for optional accessories
Waterproof, Shockproof, Nitrogen purged.
All calibre rated.

Vintage B&L, (Pre Bushnell) 3-9x40 A/O works well on this Annie 1717.

And, it likes 17 gr. TNT CCI ammo.

👍🏻

Bought one cheap from our ol' buddy Doug. It sat on a RAR .17 M2 for about a half-hour, then jumped over to my 10/22 CSC. Pretty nice scope for $190.

Thanks guys. The Burris looks good for what I'm asking for.

Same scope I have on mine and it seems perfect, I am a knob twister but not with a 17HMR

Going back west this year & this might give up this time around, but a blast so far. Responsible for a few varmints back east as well.

Have the superlight Volquartsen 17 HMR with the SWFA Ultralight 2.5-10 x 32. Total weight 6 lb 3 oz.

I picked the Bushnell Prime 3-12x40 Multi-Turret for my 17 WSM because I wanted to dial and not use a BDC style holdover reticle.
Comes with a 17 HMR turret.

I like a S&B 2.5-10x56. Might be overkill, but after 19 years it's still going strong.

Have around 4 Minox ZA3 3 X 9 X 40 BDC on my , Brothers and Nephews 17 HMR no issues clear and work well. Bought a couple spares but have not had to use them. Use them for Sage Rats near Burns OR.

Although you read about guys shooting over 175 yds with the 17 HMR that is pretty much the distance limit of high-percentage hits with them.
I do a lot of gopher shooting with mu Ruger American Rimfire and I put a Leupold Freedom 309x40 on it and am will satisfied - a $200 scope for a $200 rifle.

SWFA 10x is fantastic for that.

I'm glad this topic came up. My 17 is used for a wide variety of targets near and far(ish), large and small and at day and at night. I'd love Doug to comment further if he would. I've been thinking about the Hawke Frontier SF 4-20x44 - Mil Pro....

I've not seen any other images of this scope and I'm wondering where the illumination control is. I highly prefer the control to be on the paralax knob.

We have been selling an increased quantity of the higher end Hawke scopes in the past 6 months or so and getting great feedback from the guys buying them. Lots of scope for the price for sure

Hawke Vantage 17HMR Rimfire 12x or 16x are made specifically for 17HMR caliber. My buddy really likes his 12x.

6x42 Leupold

CleanAirTurbulence: I have several heavy barrel Rifles in caliber 17 HMR and have been shooting this round (high volume style!) on Varmints and small game since 2,003.
I say "strap on" as much power as you can afford in a good quality variable scope.
On my 17 HMR's I have two that use Weaver V-16's (4 to 16 power), two with Burris 4.5x14's and one with a Leupold 6x18!
Those Weaver V-16's are just wonderful scopes and my "first love" on my first 17 HMR, but the Leupold 6x18 "takes it up a notch"!
And this - don't let ANYONE tell you the 17 HMR is only good for "175 yards"!
Learn the cartridge (wind at distance and trajectory!) and use a good Laser rangefinder and go have some "long distance" fun with the 17 HMR.
Hold into the wind
