I'm considering my first ever .17 HMR in the near future. Bolt action for use with a suppressor on rodent-type targets as far as the rifle will reach.
What are some good options for scoping it?

I put a old Burris Fullfield 6x on mine with a 1/2 minute Lee Dot reticule and it's as good as it gets for me. MB

Mine has a 4-12X Leupold Vari X II AO / FD on it. I like the magnification range. I wish it had a hold-over reticle of some sort. Leupold's Tri MOA would do all I want. I don't think I need to twist knobs for the distances I shoot with it.

Agree with TOM 4-12 with AO is about ideal for the HMR.
YMMV

I just put a Hawke 4-12x40 AO https://us.hawkeoptics.com/vantage-4-12x40-ao-3030.html on mine. It was about $130 from Opticsplanet.com. Pretty nice scope.

I use an M8 Leupold 12x on my Ruger M77/17, fine crosshairs (duplex). Wouldn’t change a thing.
It works pretty well on PDs out to about 175 yards.

I just put a Hawke 4-12x40 AO Pretty nice scope. The Hawke Vantage 4-12x40 AO 30/30 #14140 is a very solid and dependable scope. 11 layer fully multi-coated optics for excellent clarity Adjustable objective for parallax correction (AO models) 1 inch mono-tube chassis for superior strength ¼ MOA low profile ‘no-snag’ fingertip turrets Fast focus eyebell and high torque zoom ring Threaded objective/ocular for optional accessories Waterproof, Shockproof, Nitrogen purged. All calibre rated.

Vintage B&L, (Pre Bushnell) 3-9x40 A/O works well on this Annie 1717. And, it likes 17 gr. TNT CCI ammo. DF

I have a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 w/ ballistic plex on mine. I like it a lot. This but E1 w/ long range MOA reticle 👍🏻 Bought one cheap from our ol' buddy Doug. It sat on a RAR .17 M2 for about a half-hour, then jumped over to my 10/22 CSC. Pretty nice scope for $190.
What fresh Hell is this?

Pawn shop used Salvage $200. Close out Sweet 17 & rings from my bin. $50 Killing prairie dogs at 300, priceless. Going back west this year & this might give up this time around, but a blast so far. Responsible for a few varmints back east as well.

I like a S&B 2.5-10x56. Might be overkill, but after 19 years it's still going strong.

Although you read about guys shooting over 175 yds with the 17 HMR that is pretty much the distance limit of high-percentage hits with them. I do a lot of gopher shooting with mu Ruger American Rimfire and I put a Leupold Freedom 309x40 on it and am will satisfied - a $200 scope for a $200 rifle. drover
223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.
