Any god way to carry extra cartridges?

I’ve carried them loose in my vest pocket. Not ideal.

Used the leather 5 cartridge carriers in the past. Bought it from cabelas. Doesn’t look like they carry it anymore.

Found some on the web. Not looking to pay +$50 for one.

With 6.5cm i use a plastic clip that came inside of some brand cartridges. It holds 5 and protects the polymer tips.

Need something for 6.5 Prc.

Ps. Not a elastic butt stock ammo carrier.

Everyone has a slightly different Hunting style, if you will. Some are Happy with them knocking against each other in their pocket, others don't care for that. The MTM plastic case is one way, There are elastic Cartridge holders that can go on your stock, depending on your style of Rifle stock, Cheek piece or not. You can carry additional cartridge holders on your belt. It all depends on your style of hunting and preferences! Heck, you can cross bandolero's accross your chest, like the Mexican Army used to do years ago!

I usually put loose cartridges in a glove in my coat pocket.

I have a couple of cloth cartridge carriers. I keep one in my pocket when hunting.

For my tikkas I have an extra mag loaded in my pocket.

The 10 round halves from Federal boxes work fine and protect quite well. I slip them in a pocket.

i use the elastic carriers on the buttstock. Very seldom do I need to reload, but if I do, I want them available immediately.

I have three Ruger 77 rifles with straight stocks and no cheek piece. Those wear neoprene Uncle Mikes shellholders on the stocks. They are handy and also add to shooting comfort.

On DBM rifles, I carry an extra mag in my backpack. For all others, I have an Uncle Mikes cordura cartridge wallet that holds 6-10 rounds. I put the wallets or extra mags in the safe, next to the barrel of each rifle. When I grab a rifle, I grab the extra ammo to go in my backpack.

In my pocket, anything else just gets in the way.

In the rifle’s magazine. This year I asked myself how many times have I ever shot all five rounds in my rifle to shoot a deer? Never, and one and done gets it done most often. Sure there are more back in the truck or the cabin, just not rattling around in my pack or pocket.

I use two types of cartridge carriers. One is a leather carrier made by Hunter that goes in my day pack and the other is soft wallet made by Kolpin that goes in a pocket.

The neoprene stock sleeves are handy on single shots.





They can also come in handy when you get thick into hogs. I shot five hogs that morning and was glad to have extra rounds handy. The stock sleeve was starting to run low.

My exp with elastic holders have been they loosen and sag over time.

I use a folding nylon cartridge carrier that holds 8-10 cartridges and it rides in a pocket in my pack. Uncle Mike's makes them I believe and sells for around $15-20.

I did the same with a Norma cartridge holder. I keep one each in my warmer weather coat and my cold coat, so I don't have to remember to switch out. I also have a canvas pouch that I got free from Hornady as a promotion. You can buy them for around $20. It's light, quiet and handy.

on my rifles i always have a shell boot with 6 handloaded rounds when i deer hunt ,best way to carry cartridges , > that way a person never forgets his ammo.

It should be blaze orange for safety reasons and in case you drop it on the ground it can be found easily.

I've said that before too, and it bit me eventually.

That's not to mention the few times I blew through a mag full of rounds shooting at stupid coyotes a few miles from the rig.

To the OP:
I throw a few extra rounds in an old cartridge wallet and keep it in my pack, but usually also put 2-3 in my bino harness just in case I get seperated from my pack.

Another Uncle Mike's Wallet user here, keep it simple.

I do like a butt stock ammo holder, it serves as temporary storage if I have to unload the rifle. Otherwise I keep it empty so as not to unbalance the rifle. Helps protect the butt stock too.

I had an elder cousin that always said there is no such thing as having too much ammunition. If you are in hog country 5 rounds can leave you woefully short. My BIL ran out of ammo the other evening, he killed 3 out of 6 hogs with his only 5 rounds that were in the rifle. The rest were in a bag in the truck. Luckily a survivor ran back out to check on the fallen and I got him. Sometimes there are 20 hogs or more. I would think bear country would be a place you would sure need accessible ammo. As to the question I usually keep some extra in my side coat pocket.

My preference is to have extra rounds in my pocket on a stripper clip. It holds them together nicely, it keeps them quiet and they pull off easily one at a time.

Also good is an M1 Garand en bloc clip, at least for '06, x57, savage, or creed based rounds. Other stuff might work, too-I've not given it a shot.

Another vote for this product. I have one mounted via MOLLE to the outside of my light (poncho, woobie, food, water, first aid) overnight pack that I usually carry while out in the desert. It's never dropped a round even when pushing through tight brush or climbing sandstone cliffs.

I also have a USMC-surplus war belt with an M110 double magazine pouch. Turns out that with a little bit of foam to adjust the pouch depth, it nicely holds two ten-round 7600 magazines. That belt also holds my IFAK, radio, and a small utility pouch with a headlamp, lighter, map, compass, emergency marker panel, and a couple other things.

when deer hunting, i usually have a m-94 30-30 or a m-70 in 30-06. after wrestling with this question, it occurred to me that if i couldn't kill a deer with 5 shots, i shouldn't be out in the woods. same for the 7 in the 30-30.

I felt the same way. Then one day I killed a nice buck, 2 shots. On the way back to get the truck I ran in to a entire pack of coyotes in a field. Killed 2, missed one. So I had an empty gun and multiple targets in the field. For some reason the yotes just didn't want to leave. I carry spares in my pocket now. No reason to get fancy.

I have an old nylon ammo carrier made by Koplin that folds. Holds 12 rounds for my 7mm Mag and rides on the waist strap of my daypack. I have 3 in the rifle and 12 in the carrier. If I need more shells than that, I don't deserve to get whatever I am shooting at. But my old carrier is just about worn out so in the future I will need to find something else since they don't make what I use any longer. But my wife is seriously into crafting and I'm pretty sure she can tear it apart, use it as a pattern and make me a clone of it when I need her to.

Same here. For years I used a 300 WSM. The cases for those are wider and I had to leave every 3d loop empty. I'm back to an '06 and can use all the loops.

I like the buttstock carriers for speed and handiness, but they soak up rain and melting snow, and tend to lose rounds when navigating through thick brush. For years now, I have been using empty bullet boxes. I save the foam that the manufacturer packs in these with the bullets, or put my own foam in to keep the cartridges from rattling.

For a long time Speer was just about the only game in town for nice hard plastic boxes, though they needed a bit of masking tape to help keep them closed. Recently, Sierra, Barnes, and the newer Speer boxes have a much more secure latch to keep the boxes closed.

I mostly hunt with single shots, so still carry one or two rounds in a pocket for a quicker reload.

I use the uncle mikes but would prefer blaze orange. I do not understand the camo craz when it comes to small items that can be set down. Usually when the knives come out and I take extra items off.
I keep spare ammo in the wallet in a vest pocket or maybe a second in a pack, depending on how may tags I have and how far in the bush I am.

My dad once got caught out in late fall after wet snowfall and pulled bullets to get gunpowder to start fire on damp wood. I have had occasion to regret not having another round. I have never regretted having too many.

As others here have stated, if I can't kill an animal with the full mag in the gun, I have other issues.

I have been carrying spare rounds my whole life and never ever had to go to them. But having extra rounds for game is not why I continue to carry them. I do so in case I ever get lost, (call it "turned around" if it's less offensive to your maleness), or injured to the point of immobility. When rescue parties are out looking for you, 3 timed shots could save your life. Technology is a wonderful thing at times. But where I hunt,often times, there is no cell service.

I seldom carry "loose" cartridges. Less seldom I'll carry some in my pack (usually fanny pack), in a case like the MTM shown. As in above post, there are good reasons other than shooting a critter to carry extra rounds.

Mostly if I am carrying extra cartridges they will be in a cut down piece of the plastic holders the cartridges come in. This is electrical-taped (NOT DUCT TAPE!) to the stock, pointy ends back. The cartridges are inserted and taped into this to prevent loss. Fold an end of the tape over to make a readily graspable tab for quick removal if need be (almost never in my case).

After years of doing this I have no concerns about tape residue or finish damage on the stock or sticky in the chamber, but YMMV - especially if you are using a fancy gun. Mine are all tools, rather than art.....but these should not be left on "permanently. Remove after seasonal use.

I have lost more cartridges from those elastic POS things than I have ever used from them. Phooey on those!

What someone really needs to market is a molded-in inset in the synthetic stocks, with clips to hold the cartridges in, perhaps with a hinged or sliding cover. An after-market one that can be inset into either synthetic or wood stocks would be nice also, if it wouldn't reduce strength too much.

I usually carry a magazine full, plus a magazine count of spares. For the 98 this comes to 10 rounds, for the RU77 it is 8 total. It is rare I have to dip into the spares, except to refill the magazine. On a good day that means one round.....two if I use an insurance shot

Here’s the same one that I’ve used since about 1989......made by Hunter. Very comfortable, virtually silent when brushed by clothing or brush, holds 14 rounds. Not certain if it is still manufactured.....but, it darn sure should be! memtb

I will usually keep a mtm box of reloads back at camp , or in my truck depending on what and where I’m hunting. To carry on my person I take one of the plastic holders that come in factory ammo and I cut it down to hold 4 extra shells. It fits nicely in a front pocket, and keeps it much quieter then loose cartridges . I figure I shouldn’t need anymore them what is in my magazine, but on the other hand it’s good back up .

3 or 4 in the rifle and one in each front pocket. [3 is the limit allowed in the rifle] in my pack an mtm ammo wallet.

i cant see putting weight on the butt of a rifle i have worked at to make light weight, just dont seem right.

I've been using the Uncle Mikes ammo wallets for 35 years, carry it on my pack belt. 88451 is for S/A cartridges, 88331 "Magnum" is for 06 size and up.

The Cole Tac looks interesting, wonder if it's long enough for anything beyond a 308. Apparently the Chinese think we all hunt with AK-47's and make cartridge carriers that fit the 7.62x39 fine, not so much for L/A rounds......

So they are lighter and more handy in your pack than on your rifle? And you like having lumps in your pockets?

Now, if we are talking changing the balance of the rifle, you may have a point. Or another poiint as the case may be.

Personal preferences are......well, personal. There is no "right" way.

It's easy to "Blow through" rounds, hunting coyotes! That said, I only ran out of ammo once - got 3 out of 4, one got up, I hit him again - another got up,so I hit her again.

My favorite are the 8 rounders by Federal from the mid-late 90's 24pk boxes. I have a leather 5-rounder on my R-side back-pack hip-belt and one of the 8's in a small pocket on the hip belt on the L side. If shooting a belted-magnum, I use a Federal 5-rounder from the premium/safari ammo in the pocket, and 5 in the leather again.

We still-hunt, spot/stalk, and occasionally do "drives" of tree-rows, CRP, or cattails. I grew up having to learn to shoot game on the run, and I still do. Sometimes I (gasp!!) miss. Sometimes the hit isn't as good as one would hope and a 2nd (or 3rd, 4th, etc) is necessary.

Fall of '19 while deer hunting we watched a pack of 7 coyotes hunting together. They were too far to shoot at nor did we have permission to hunt where we saw them, but, it's not at all uncommon to move slowly into the wind and bump a bedded coyote or 3, at which point I'll shoot at them w/whatever I happen to be carrying and be happy for a few extra rounds close at hand.

When I'm out with a break action gun, I usually have one of these little felt pouches and 4 or 5 spare rounds for every barrel.

My magazine rifle and my newly aquired 71 both hold 5 rounds and I'm quite comfortable with that when I only foresee taking a single animal.

I keep a couple in my right front pocket. The rest are in a ziplock in my pack. I hate things on my belt while I'm wearing a pack, and I'm m nearly always carrying a pack.

Even if going light, I like to have 10 or so rounds with me, just in case....
Just in case there are wolves, just in case I'm invited to a rodeo, just in case something is wounded and moving away, just in case luck is on my side and there are multiple targets...

Rifle holds 4. One time in 17 seasons I needed a reload past that. And actually I really didn't NEED them, the moose was dead, but he didn't know it yet.

I just throw a few extra loose rounds in a small pocket in my pack.

I cut apart a stock ammo holder and sewed it to the inside pocket of my blaze vest.

Note: once you see it, you can’t un-see it. Argh!!!

That is how I carry spares.

Check out the Beartooth neoprene buttstock cartridge holders. Use them on several rifles. Don't seem to stretch out like the elastic ones. I keep a 10 round Federal plastic ammo holder full in my back pack to load the rifle and add a couple of rounds to the Beartooth holder. Haven't needed often, but better than walking around with an empty rifle.

I use a stripper clip or just rubber band 3 or 5 together.

I used to use a federal plastic sleeve that I cut in half with a big rubber band around it. Then I bought an Allen ammo wallet. The elastic loops got stretched pretty quickly. Bought a Triple K leather wallet and have been using it for about 10 years. It will probably do the job till I get too old to hunt.

Small zip-lock baggie. In my pants or coat pocket, or in back pack.

5 rounds or so in sandwich or snack size, then I keep those in a gallon size zip lock baggie in my duffle bag ( or a plastic 20 round case of cartridges in the bigger baggie ). Just want to keep them as waterproof and dust/dirt free as possible.

When I go woodchuck hunting, I may take 20-40 rounds with me, depending where I go. Twenty round slip top cases ( MTM?) kept in gallon zip lock baggies , one 20 rounder/baggie, kept in my back pack.

Not counting woodchuck hunting, I honestly, never needed to "refill" what was originally loaded in my rifle, but it is good to have extra rounds.

A similar leather case for 45-70 and 7mm and an El Paso cartridge belt for .270, 6.5, 7.39, 7.62/.308, .44, .480 and .45-70.

I carry a nylon fold over case with only 4 or 5 extra shells, I don't fill it. Because it's usually one and done. I do carry one in my right front pocket loose and that's all I carry in that pocket. With 4 in the gun one in my pocket 5 in shell holder so I carry 10 total.

I ordered one in orange after seeing this. I like it being easy to see if it gets set down in the leaves, and I needed something for the 30-30 single shot I'm setting up for my son.

To me the orange is more of a red.

Well, my niece got my H&R Trapper 44mag after she killed a deer with it. She asked about carrying ammo, since it's a single shot. I'm giving her a cheapie camo one that I've already wasted too many minutes of my life searching for after setting it down. She's got young eyes, she'll find it in half the time.

In my experience the loud boom immediately preceding, tends to cover the screech of the Velcro.

Either in my pocket or in a belt carrier. Word of caution. Make sure that the cartridges are held snuggly. I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t the hard way. Nothing like chasing bear hounds for a mile on foot and finding out you lost your spare rounds somewhere along the way in the bush.

I carry mine in a spare Magazine...yet another reason why every bolt gun I own has detachable mags, with all but one being of the AICS variety.

I have elastic cartridge carriers on many rifles. With a full magazine and the cartridges on the elastic stock carrier, I have enough ammo to get by. If the rifle has a detachable magazine, like my Winchester 100s, I carry an extra loaded magazine in my right side vest pocket.

Have 6-8 of the old Uncle Mikes nylon ammo wallets but a few years ago swapped to the ColeTac version shown above and have 4 or so floating around my gun room.

I throw 2-3 rounds in the pocket or more likely in the pack topper.

there are some cheap morter forkers on this thread but i will shamelessly steal one or two of their ideas.

i am cheap too. i sometimes slug hunt with a 20ga. single shot. i tape a 12 ga shell to the forend of the gun and slip a 20 ga shell into the 12 ga. one instant reload at your fingertips.

come to think about it i have never emptied a magazine at large game.

I’ve had a few festivals emptying a bolt action killing several deer or a bear. I keep a 10 round pouch in the same place on my belt every time I carry a rifle, and another 6 rounds in a speed strip in my pack.

More than a few ways to carry extra ammo and damn good to see what works for others. I used to use those Hunter leather boxes with the cardboard dividers out of a shell box but by the end of a season I had to clean the green off my shells, fug that. Then tried the elastic butt cuff and lost 1 to many rds, fug that. Started using the federal plastic shell liner out federal shell boxes in the sloping chest pocket of my hunting coat that has a zipper, this works best for me. I've never carried to much ammo, I've never carried too little either. I don't have an ego problem that tells me I only need one.
Most of the time it is one and done but it will be a cold day in hell before I go in the field with less than 12 rds. Mb

I use the plastic carriers from the Federal ammo boxes inside a plastic baggie in my pack. I also have a sling that holds 3 rounds.

I don't understand why somebody doesn't make a vest that would hold 5-10 rounds like an upland vest similar to what 16bore made for himself?

I use a 5-round bridle leather carrier with a flap on the right side of my belt and one cartridge in my left shirt pocket pointed left. Makes getting a cartridge in a hurry an easy deal. 3 in the rifle makes 9. If I’m a very long way from the camp or truck, a 10 round carrier from the ammo box in a Crown sack in the fender pocket of the four wheeler. I don’t think I’ve fired more than 3 shots in a day hunting ever. Happy Trails

I bought a Cole-tac last year. Very good quality. I will buy another. Mine holds 5 270win on top and 6 on the second row. I normally keep 4 on top and 6 on the bottom. I load the 4 on top in my rifle so I carry 6 extra rounds. For my type of hunting which is Southeastern whitetail thats plenty of ammo to carry.

LOL. I used to be worried Rock Chuck. I wouldn't leave the truck without a full box. These days I am more worried about running out of snicker bars and meat sticks than ammo. Theres a lot of things I used to haul around that stay in the truck these days.

I with you guys. I have three extra mags for my Tikka and only buy rifles that take detachable magazines. No loose rounds, quick to load, quick to unload. I've never lost a magazine and don't have to worry about the floor plate opening up and all the rounds falling out into the snow. I'm done with rifles with integral magazines.

Have used these in the past but they always turn my brass green. Does it matter? no, but after spending all that time getting them pretty in the reloading process I hate seeing discolored brass. I really like them otherwise and would use them more if I could figure out the discoloration.

My wife cuts those belt slides in half so they each hold five rounds and I only store ammo in them when hunting, so the time spent corroding is minimal. Three of my big lever guns have the five round butt stock cartridge holders from Leverguns Leather Works. Depending on design they are spendy, but they sure are purdy! Not sure why I bother with them as all of the big lever guns hold six rounds in their full length magazine tubes.

She also sews five elastic loops on the right hand side of my hunting shirts and coats about chest pocket level. They are long and open on the bottom to allow pushing the cartridge up to allow quick access. If I use them then I don't use a leather belt slide.

In 55 years of Alaska critter shooting I have never needed the extra ammo. My 30-06 holds five down and my .338 Winny holds four down and the Tikka Creed takes five round detachable magazines. That's a plenty since I'm only allowed one moose!

I carry 20 rounds - 5 in the Tikka mag on the gun - 5 in a spare mag in a pocket on my hunting jacket and 10 in an ammo wallet in my pack. Usually use only one but always carry 20.

Never can tell when you'll be ambushed by a herd of porcupines.

I carry my rifle loaded, safety on, muzzle controlled, then I put one extra bullet in each of my two front pockets for quick access, then I use a Franklin Arsenals ammo box with the other 14 rounds in my pack... these ammo boxes are not quick access, but they are the best for protecting rounds and holding them in complete silence.

I take out the federal cartridge holder from the package. I have two leather belt BOXES as in a photo early on in this thread. I put the Federal plastic holder down in the leather belt box after cutting the last two on on end of each holder. Then I put some asphalted bankline around something going in the opening. Also a duct tape wrapped Bic style lighter w/other survival toys. You then have sixteen rounds in the leather box on what is usually my pistol belt with proper gun, knife, and other goodies. Place everything together so it won't rattle. If you lose your pack you still have handgun, knife, ammo, and survival gear. Hopefully you duplicate the survival stuff. Two is one and one is none! I put four extra cartridges in a wool glove stashed in a chest pocket. Read about it in a Tap's Tips page in about 1965 .I was six!..Long before we could deer hunt but it is still my habit.

In my pocket but use one of the wife's pony tail holders to wrap around them like a rubber band.

either a spare mag or 1 in each chest pocket. I should probably just leave them, not sure i've ever fired a deer rifle more than 2 times while hunting without a trip back to the truck or camp. I always think I need to be prepared for the hog scenario someone posted but fortunately there aren't many in the immediate area where I hunt so I've yet to have a shot at more than 1.

2 extra in my binocular harness and 2 more in my waist belt pocket on my pack that isn't big enough to hold much else.

I carry 5 rounds in my right front pants pocket wrapped with a fresh rubber band or elastic and another 5 in the top pocket of my hunting pack.

My Cole-TAC (from earlier in this thread) is already getting retired.
It's an OK ammo hauler though it's gotten flimsy/distorted in a hurry, but I cannot quell the stick to the velcro so it's far too noisy for my liking.

A friend generously gifted this one to me and I can't believe I didn't go to this well sooner. ❤️❤️

If I am feeling like a dangerous game hunter I wear a leather cartridge carrier, otherwise I tuck a wallet in my coat pocket or backpack.

I make these for my rifles and muzzleloaders for extra ammo.

Extra mag in my hip belt pocket on my pack. Pretty simple.

I really like those handcrafted leather cartridge carriers, but I know my hunting doesn’t warrant carrying one. But I still want them.

When I was young I cut one of the Federal plastic holders in half and put a big rubber band around them to keep them from falling out. Then I got fancy and bought a Bob Allen Camo wallet. The elastic loops didn't last long. Then I bought a Triple K Ammo wallet. It works and keeps them from rattling, but honestly the.federal plastic holder was as good as either. I have an elastic cuff on my contender.

I still use the plastic federal cartridge carriers cut in half.

I have one of these in the small size on the right side of my belt at the 4 o'clock position. They are cheap, compact and hold 3 rounds. I also keep a few extras in a Federal 8 round plastic holder in my pack.

I usually hunt with my TIKKA T3 in 6.5X55. I have two three shot mags. One in the rifle -- one in my vest pocket. Rarely need a second shot, so 6 rounds is sufficient.

I have one of these in my pack and singles in two front pants pockets.

I access my hunting areas by ATV and rifle is in a gunboot all the time except when calling moose from one of my many "stand" locations, 300 RUM with the stretchy foamy thingy on the stock works good, once I take rifle out of gunboot I don't touch it again unless shooting or dumping back in gunboot

These days most of my rifles have been converted to use the Accurate Mag bottom metal and 5 round mags, one in the gun during the hunt plus two spare mags in pack on the 4 Wheeler

Seems like I've heard this story before....member "A" wants his stock modified with a cartridge trap and other work then sends his stock to member "B"....member "B" then ghosts member "A" and the stock is never seen again. ...or something like that.


History aside, that is some gorgeous work and beautiful wood.

I;m one of those guys that always has more than enough ammo "just in case" . Couple extra magazines for those rifles that use them, a big fan of the uncle mikes carriers. For my Savage 99's I bought from Midway a cheek piece riser that holds ten or so rounds on the off side, and gets my head up to the scope better. For tomorrow's coyote foray I've loaded up my drilling belt that I bought from Falcon Leather from I think Slovakia.It holds 5 rifle ctgs in a covered pouch, and 20 shot shells, so I have 10 loads of 16ga BB, 20 rounds of #7 1/2 in case I decide to call crows, and 5, 7X65R rounds if the coyotes hang up. Also I have a few real nice belt slide type carriers for shot shells and rifle cartridges , and one for combo guns from "Happy Fox" in Lithuwania . Searching on line I have found some real practical hunting stuff from eastern Europe, at pretty reasonable prices. Still also use the Federal carriers . Come to think of it I have a drawer full ! LOL

If mag fed i carry an extra loaded mag. Otherwise i have 5 rounds wrapped with a rubberband in the pack. I have no desire to carry any more weight than needed. I would rather have extra water than extra ammo.

I've been wanting to try out one of the Cole-Tac cartridge carriers for a while but I haven't gotten around to it. Years ago I took a factory ammo box and cut down the plastic sleeve to hold 3, 4 or 5 cartridges like several other members mention. These work great. I keep one in the bottom pouch of my AGC bino pouch and another in the side pocket for easy access if needed. Haven't found much need to change the system in years. My only issue is that I don't buy factory ammo much at all so I don't have any "replacement" material. I guess I'll just have to bum some from someone if I ever have a need.

A four rounder fits perfect in this mesh side pocket...wind indicator and a lens pen are in the opposite mesh pocket.

Fabric or leather 10 round belt carrier I slip in my pocket or pack. If you are worried about jingling around, tape 3-4 rounds together with masking tape and throw in your pocket

How about stripper clips that come in 308/30-06 size (5 rounds) or 223 size (10 rounds). Many common cartridges fit those two sizes.

For my rifles that take a detachable mag I just carry a spare in my coat pocket.

On my double rifles and levers I get a custom leather butt cuff made with shell loops. Otherwise I take those plastic shell holders in the federal ammo boxes and cut it down to like 4-5 shells. Works well, doesn’t rattle, and if I lose it so what.

The Norma "Whitetail" ammo comes in pretty neat 5 round plastic carriers.

An extra mag or I cut down the styrofom insert in an old 20 round ammo carton and the cut down the box to fit.

I use cut down soft plastic ones that come with some manus. sort of like they are supposed to be threaded on belt. not bulky.

I cut those in "half" - 4 or 5 rounds - whatever fits on the stock, and tape this to the stock, with the cartridges lightly taped in as well. I've lost too many rounds with those POS elastic stock holders. I don't like anything in my pockets, but I have been known to carry one round in each pants side-pocket. I also sometimes carry several rounds loose, or with the first option in my fanny pack.It has cartridge loops inside, also, but I have found those to be more trouble than worth.

I recently ordered something or other, and it came with a bonus 2-round patch to stick on the stock, which I did. I'm still working on a way to secure the cartridges , however. It may come back off.

It's been decades since I've had to dip into my "spares", but it's good insurance!
