Big Game pictures are important to us because it remind us of our experience and allows us to share or "show off" a hunt.

Does it turn you off when people who kill a big game animal then take a photo op use
the ole extended arm technique that fishermen use to make the animal look bigger than it is.

To me it cheapens the report because it puts a dishonest twist on the hunters story. The picture being part of that story.

It's cheesy and it makes the hunter look like a novice.

Many times the Outfitter/Guide who is taking the picture will tell his dude hunter to extend his arms so now the guide has a promotional picture he can use.

It cheapens the hunt report in my opinion.

Also, many times the hunters rifle will be laying across the animal pointing into his stomach or chest while the picture is being taken. Again, it makes him look like a novice greenhorn.

Look at the bottom photo in this Berger advertisement. This is what you DON'T do.
Makes me nervous just looking at it.

What is a proper photo op for a trophy animal?

Trophy being subjective as it may not be the horn size but the quality of the hunt, ect.

I watched a tv show where they did a segment on how to take a proper picture.. (In other worlds, how to make an average buck look big to the unknowing person)

Rather pathetic, IMO.

Proper photo should try to show all points, with the person naturally holding the antlers, IMO.
Trophy Chicken..Still livin and ain't scared of chitt.
[Linked Image]
I like to keep it natural, I mean I have seen some pics that make a monster look like a dink, and other pics that make a dink look like a minster.

I hate looking at a friends pic and say wow that thing must be like a 150"er than they say no it was 115-120"s.....hate that.

I know this pic is of a bow (safety not worried about) but this is my most favorite pic of this deer.

In these pics I am directly behind the deer actually touching it with my legs.

[Linked Image]

This has to be my 2nd favorite pic.

[Linked Image]

Now heres a pic of the same deer and it looks like a dink.

[Linked Image]

Its all about the camera angle.

BTW...that buck scores 155 5/8"
Heres a pic of a friends buck that if it had the other side I swore would go 150"+......

he said if it went 120 he'd be lucky with the other side included.

I don't like it when there's an obvious attempt to make an animal look bigger than it is. Sometimes I don't think it's intentional so no big deal to me.

I would have to agree.

The only thing that I think is truly pathetic is the guys who have the stern "war face" look instead of a smile or just a natural expression.

All in all, I don't get worked up about it. If a guy wants to post a pic by all means post a pic.
Ive got a buddy that shot a black bear with his bow last fall and put pics of it on facebook. My first thought was that it was huge but then I realized how he took the picture. To me it looked like a 300lb+ bear but when i asked him, it turned out it was only about 125lbs or so.
Good pics just happen when you aren't trying to get anything other than just "a pic". Sometimes staying out of the picture altogether is the best way.

I think this would be a descent pic if it was not for my belt being all twisted up.
[Linked Image]

Holding your arms out is a little cheesy, but who really cares? It's their animal, and if they are obsessed with only antler size than so be it.

There can also be times when the animal falls in a bad spot (moose and elk especially) that you have to have that type of a pic if you want one that is not all bloody and dismembered. Been there a few times.

[Linked Image]

laugh
Agreed DH....

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]
I just like the pictures...

I try take pictures that make the animal look good, i.e., tongue not hanging out, no messy exit wound and positioned to show something of the habitat it was taken in.
The extended arm thing bothers me much less than the back of the truck, laying in the driveway, strapped on the 4wheeler, open cavity with gut pile included, head cut off below the jaw tongue hanging out, type of trophy pictures.
This is one of my favorites
[Linked Image]
No size reference (not that pheasants would need one anyhow) and no ugly mugs to screw up a good pic. I guess the shotgun could be a reference, but who really knows if those are 26, 28, 30 inch or however long barrels?

Sometimes a size reference is needed, but as mentioned it can be manipulated easily. I still get in the pics of most of my kills, but I also set a rifle in there too and let that be somewhat of a reference.
[Linked Image]

There's much less doubt about the size of this bull, assuming you realize a guide gun is shorter than your average bolt gun. The pics I have of me with this bull show me behind him. Thats a few feet due to the size of the bull. In those pics he looks just as big as a huge Alaskan bull.
Dog Hunter, looks like you and I have the same idea when it comes to dog and pheasant pics...

Sometimes I forget, especially with birds so this is the pics I end up with. I guess I could have not been lazy and carried the birds across the street to the field and taken pics there.
[Linked Image]

Thanks Mike NZ. I always try to get the dogs in with bird kill pics. They're the ones who did the work. I just pulled the trigger.
Naked pictures can be natural enough I guess.......sure don't find them troubling.

First let me say I take pictures for me....nobody else.

I hunt alone so it's a digital camera/timer and a monopod for me. I have to take allot of pictures to get one good one.

I put my rifle in the pictures because I have more than one rifle and love my rifles...they are part of my hunt. Sometimes the rifle just doesnt make it into the shot. like the last two.

All of these pictures are self timed monopod pictures

I always try to get a pic of exactly how they fall too. I don't know why, its just habit. I don't tuck in tongues or clean blood for those pics.
[Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
I'm almost embarressed to show this pic. This is a classic example of how me not being in the pic makes the animal look bigger. I am not going to tell you how small this bear was.

This was a serious judgment screw up on my part. I hid my head in shame when I had him checked in. The guy who did the paperwork was laughing the whole time.
[Linked Image]
I man not much for longarm pics, but I have probably done it a time or two. whistle

Few critters from last year.

Maybe a little arm stretch and some blood that was difficult to keep under control while being solo and running back and forth with a timer.
[Linked Image]

Solo again with timer. Probably could have removed more grass and maybe not lean on the critter.
[Linked Image]

Had someone else take this picture. I made the mistake and didn't review the pics. Out of focus and I had to crop a pile. Too much grass as well. Light was amazing about 1/2 before this shot, but I forgot my camera in my other pack. Learned a few things on this field shot.

Random photos are great, I don't take nearly enough of them on hunts. I don't like long arm shots, mainly because it's hard to tell just what size animal I'm looking at. I much prefer a well composed long arm shot to back of the pickup, in the garage, on the lawn shots. Couldn't care less if anyone is smiling in the photo, I'm not that smiley myself. I don't do fist pumps and jump around like a chick when I kill something either. These are a few of my favorite shots.

Remote controls are the bomb when it comes to solo shots. Too bad camera companies have done away with them in their P&S lines. Seeing the end, I bought a couple off eBay a year ago. Should probably find some more to buy.
Nice pics!

Mostly I'm lucky if I remember to take any! blush
My opinion on hunting photos:

1. Take more than you think is necessary, today with digital cameras all its going to cost is a bit of time.

2. Keep the blood and guts to a minimum, it doesnt take much to clean up an animal for some quality pictures.

3. Take some pictures both with and without a flash.

4. Put some thought into your photos, its well worth the extra effort to have some quality photos.

5. Dont just take pictures of your animals, take scenery pictures, pictures at camp, etc. etc. etc.

A few self timed photos from last year. Its possible to get good photos when hunting solo, but you have to work at it. A tripod helps a TON.

SU35 - I really enjoy seeing the photos so many hunters post here. Great stuff. That said, yes, there's one heck of a difference in quality of the photos. You brought up two distinct points; one being gun safety with the rifle pointed at or near the hunter, and the other being the photo shown to make the animal/fish look bigger. Both of those bother me a bit.

Over the years I've thoroughly enjoyed sharing photos of my hunts with others via e-mail and on some forums. Learned a bit too, from guys who take their photos and hunting seriously. Seems like many of the African PH's know how important those "trophy" photos are to their hunters. Mostly I see the animals cleaned up and posed nicely. Makes for a great photo for the hunter to preserve and share the memories of the hunt.

A few of my favorites:

Youngest son's first deer.
[Linked Image]

A buddy with me and a mule deer.
[Linked Image]

One of my bucks, on a solo hunt.
[Linked Image]

I like this one even though I've been told it looks like the horse grew antlers!
[Linked Image]

Should have cleaned up the blood a little better here. Forgot.
[Linked Image]

On these last two, the guys we were hunting with really went out of their way to clean up my son's bear a bit and pose him for the photos. Worth the effort in my opinion.
[Linked Image]

[img]http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k129/GuyMiner/hunting%20photos/023-1.jpg[/img]

Pretty proud of the young fellow in several of those photos. He sure seems to enjoy our time afield together, and we've got quite a few photos in the great outdoors. Many of my game photos haven't come out so great, but I'm giving it a try. Keep on posting 'em guys - it's great to see hunting photos. Keeps the dream alive.

Buzz - those area some great photos!

Regards, Guy

Ingwe--I couldn't agree more. Shows the realism, and most of the time TRUE emotion that goes into the sport.

Very nice pics EVERYONE..

For me, well, if I'm lucky enough to see or even kill a deer with antlers they're far to small to make them even appear big. . .grins..hard to grow tines/main beams/G2's/drop tines from buttons, spikes and forks... smile

Bears are about as tough to get good pictures of as anything...always take more than a few..I'm into selftimed shots. I'll take them even when someone else is there.

[Linked Image]

I was hunting solo when I connected this buck at mid morning and had all day to get the pictures, cape, bone and pack him back to the pickup...It was a little more of a challenge back before digital camera's hit the scene to get good field pics. You never knew what you had until the were developed.

My bud, Greenhorn with a bear I shot in Wyoming last spring....he's even pickier than I am when it comes to snapping field pics...
When remembering a hunt I always think of the packing. It's the most work, but enjoyable to me. I always try to get pics that show the sweat that went into a hunt.

Here I am carrying out an entire bone-in mule deer. this is when I decided to buy a real pack.
[Linked Image]

Here's most of a whitetail from the same spot a year later. I remember how glad I was that I had a better pack than the year before.
[Linked Image]

And this pic reminds me of how absurdly cold I got in Colorado.
[Linked Image]

Sorry for the hijack of non-critter pics, just a reminder to take the camera out even when you're not standing next to something bloody.
I got a pretty decent action sequence last year watching the Old Man. Got a little bit of everything.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

The Old Man grumbled a bit when I wanted to drag the Lope up to the top of the hill but I like the blue sky background. Just need to work on my shaded faces.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]
Longarming doesn't bother me. I can look at the picture and decide myself. No sense in not using the angle to make the critter look the best it can.
[Linked Image]

And if you bring your kids to my house, they're gonna get used to cover my short comings as a trophy hunter!!! My friends highschool aged kids with the same bull whistle

I met up with a buddy of mine and he told me he had just shot a really nice 140 lb. doe. He directed me to the place he shot her from his tree stand. Imagine his surprise when I picked up this "140 lb. representative doe" with one hand. A priceless pic laugh

Is this close enough to the tailgate?
[Linked Image]

My nephew and I shot these two bulls in the exact same spot on a water hole about a minute apart. I shot the first one, it took off and died a short distance away. The next spike walked up and posed exactly like the first one and was standing in the same tracks when my nephew nailed him. Not a bad evening. Flinch

Still my favorite tailgate shot.
[Linked Image]
When you hunt hogs with TJ you better bring a winch truck.
Still have a long way to go for better quality pictures. This one is about the best I've managed, I also hunt solo mostly and have a heck of a time trying to take a decent picture. This was off a tri-pod and at least I managed to clean up a bit and get it centered.
Now if I could only figure out how to post the image!!

Pat I couldnt help but notice over the years that you- very much like me- manage to take your orange off when its photo time..... whistle

grin
I dont want to get blood on it when field dressing....grin! Seriously, I have it on while hunting where its mandatory. Quite a few states, its not mandatory. I like it off when getting field pics, but it goes back on while packing out.
I love the pictures with kids hunting. Here is one of mine.

[Linked Image]
A good day shed hunting.
[Linked Image]
A real whopper!
[Linked Image]
One of the tuffest hunts I have ever experienced. Free range high country buffalo. 520 yards shot, .30-06, 200 grain Speer Hot Core. Complete pass through behind the shoulder DRT.
[Linked Image]
Flinch...you been a busy dude!!!

Cool beans... cool

My oldest boy when he was about 12 with a pair of fur dogs he shotgunned...Park County, Montana I'm guessing about 1992.

Check out this "bou"...Mountain variety with about as good of tops as you'll ever see..

Dang, you guys are making me jealous!
I tend to get out once in a while laugh I'm working on filling a couple of arks like the Wyoming and Montana boys have. I need to live up in Montana by Pat so I have more and bigger critters. The "once in a lifetime draw odds" and public land hunting here in Utah sucks. I guess it beats only being able to hunt white tail deer, like most people. I have to go out of state to have "fun". laugh Flinch
Yeepers Pat, that's some mtn bou!

Lightning and Little lightning Lakes in Montana's Absaroka Beartooth Wildeness. Taken from near Challis Peak in 1988, while hunting unlimited bighorn sheep. A lot of Yellowstone Park burned up that summer and the forest was closed almost all season....they opened it back up after a good two day rain in mid September. I hiked in, set up camp and found eight rams right before dark about two miles from camp. I went back to the tent and strategized my play on the rams. In the middle of the night a storm blew in and it snowed for five days. I ran out of food and had to leave with a plan to get back in there asap. I got back to town and stocked up and figured I better call to check on the quota...the qouta had been filled and that was that. It was still a great trip and adventure....sometimes you get them, sometimes you dont...

Thats my "big fish that got away" story!....grin!

Damn skippy. A big mature cow is just as hard to kill as a big bull IMHO. This was one of the hardest hunts I have ever been on and one of my proudest elk.

My North Face VE25 up on top. I've owned it for more that 30 years and it sure has served me well. I figured it out one time and I've spent more than 400 nights in it over the years...going to be using it again here in a few days..There's nothing like a bombproof shelter to crawl into after being out all day in the mountains..

Looks like a VE24... I should know, got mine in 1979. Still have it. VE25 came some years later.

Laffin...now there is a classic, Looks like a B&C gopher!
Big ones that got away....but at least we have proof!!!!
Mid 80s buck that I'm pretty sure would have nudged the Muzzleloader state record. Hunter missed him four times from the same spot @ 125-140 yards. He actually shed tears.
[Linked Image]
Gagger Coues buck 115++ that we stalked all day to get a shot at.... hunter missed at 200 yards. I wanted shed tears!
[Linked Image]
Big 380s bull. We were making a move on this bull when he decided to bugle one more time alerting another hunter who stumbled into him. Guy shot 7 times within 150 yards to kill him. My tears again!
[Linked Image]
NM...whoa, those are some incredable misses, reminds us all on the need to prepare so we can make the best of opportunities.

Reminds me of a buck from my past...have to see if I can find a picture.
damn nice muley. be nice to see the other side. it's a nice hunting picture.
great pic's there dog hunter. was that a woof?

LOL---And what may I ask is the Chuck Adam's special?
Here is a picture of a net B&C mule deer as we walked up to him

[Linked Image]

And this is one of my favorite camp pics from a bear hunt 3 years ago in WY

[Linked Image]

And my hunter snapped this picture as I kneeled down to look at this buck for the first time on a plains hunt 2 years ago. This buck had 18 scoreable points

He's one of my old buds from Bozeman, where I used to live. He owns a shipping service store over there. I was always mailing and shipping from there and we got to be friends. Great guy who loves to hunt....a damn good shot too!..
Stud bucks Drum, that Sonora buck.....WOW! Hey, is Henderson the camp bouncer, crowd control guy or what? smile

Naw, Dan is always the camp "fluffer" grin

That was a great hunt though!

The Sonora buck is one of my favorites! I thought it was a cool pic, we had literally just walked up on it, the deer was just taking his last breaths and we had not even touched his antlers yet.
Ula, that looks like Dan Henderson on the left there.

It is, that's why I said what I said about crowd control, etc.
I really put the "mohican sneak" on this guy. wink
Smile for the camera... grin

My all time favorite is of someone's little boy with his deer . He is making antlers with his hands beside his head. I tried to find it to link to it wasn't able to. Great photo.
Here ya go....

really enjoy the pics guys . but after 10 or so pages i have to wonder............where are the tags ? pics of three or four bucks in a truck bed and not a one tagged and others? just sayin'
In Indiana the metal leg band goes by the Tarsal gland on the back legs....you probably dont see it on mine...=...kinda hidden but trust me its there.
thnaks tom 264 ! i ASSUMED i know shame on me that tags went on the antlers everywhere. but i learned something today ! sorry guys
Dont sweat it...its all good.
Same in most states, a carcass tag goes on the carcass
I take pictures first!! Then tag.

Those are priceless. " He had horns like this, honestly"
We do not have to attach tags in AK unless you are a non-resident or hunting one of a very few critters where tagging is required... Tags are notched and carried with you...
A like a natural pose....

[Linked Image]

Though black and white don't suck

[Linked Image]

We don't use tags.
Black and white with a splash of color.
[Linked Image]
As they laid.
[Linked Image]
I also like before and after shots as well.
Before.
[Linked Image]
After.

Dan is my personal fluffer on at least one hunting trip a year. That number will go up dramatically as soon as he retires and has more time to do important schit like hunt
