Did it when I 1st got the rifle, then got it cerracoated and said fugg redoing the receivers 1st and 2nd stage fulcrum grooves.
Bored ....
Up at 530 am....
Said fugg it I'm hitting it.
Simple project 2.5 hrs....

This was the issue that was eating at my ocd.......

Ready to polish the stuff.

Polished area done.
Only so much you can do.
Pics suck...
But it is a vast improvement on the 1st polishing job I did.
Removing metal or altering geomoetry on parts is a no no.
Rest of parts polished waaay better than the 1st time.

Assembled and all 3 safety test GTG.
Bolt slam.
Bounce test on safe and fire.
Safety cycling and reset test.

Shoot a nazi rifle and shoot a Bulgarian commie rifle early tommorow morning for the 4th of july.

Epoxy a thin piece of stainless steel sheet metal over the pits and mirror-polish it with a Cratex wheel. It's a rubberized abrasive wheel that's available on Ebay, color-coded in several grits. Green is the one I buy by the dozen. Cratex also works better on the other points of contact on a Mauser trigger than the felt bob and polishing compound.

Little bit of J-B Weld on those dimples and sand smooth. grin

Looking good.
I tried to polish my trigger this morning but the pain pills killed that idea.
Got a laugh out of that Roger. laugh

I would just go timney instead of that.
Or buy another 98 trigger and make the 1st stage bump go away.

Might do it too see how it feels as a single stage.
Could always do a set screw set up also for a single stage.
Aint but 5 or 6 bucks just for the trigger itself.

Its has a smooth 1st stage, with a firm its their crisp 2nd stage.
Probably 3.5 pds .
Now move on to the bolt- - - - - -you can polish your knob!
Jerry
Go the Timney route. Many of those home done conversions half pull the trigger. Have at it on your own risk.
50 or 60 years ago, a small company was selling a very well made and very thin/hard component that fit nicely over that double bump portion of the Mauser two-stage trigger - they may have called it a "shoe" - not certain abut that term. It was easy to install and quite durable. In almost most all cases, the result was a crisp single stage let off. Installed a few back then - still work well. I think the cost was about $1.00 to 1.50 for each.

I have seen that or something similar I think.
Little leaf spring screw on attachment just enough to keep pressure on it for single stage on the 2nd bump taking up the 1st bump.

I kinda like the 2 stage as it is now also.
Perfectly safe and crisp.

Probably mess around with another one and see what happens modifying the 1st bump.

Timney is an option someday outta curiosity.

Not being a dik saying this.
One thing I am not is a neophyte.
I do good safe work at my skill level that I am able to.
I refuse to pay for work that others pay for that is substandard IMO.

Seen it too many times nationwide.
And fixed what others have paid for too many times.

And I stayed at a motel 6 years ago.

LOL!!!
The very worst thing a person can do to a mauser trigger is to remove the first stage. If one wants a single stage trigger, an overriding sear type is the best bet. Smooth up the "bumps" with a fine stone, smooth up the bottom of the tang, then spot harden it, then polish. The contact surfaces of the sear and cocking piece should be smooth, hard, and sharp with a neutral contact angle. If the first stage can be pulled to the second stage with about 1 to 1 1/2 lb of pull and will reset when released, it is good. I generally aim for a final let off of 3 pounds or slightly less. If I had a receiver which was as badly grooved as yours, I think I would cut a recess and install a tungsten carbide insert at the wear point. GD

I got the trigger how you describe
1st stage how you describe it and 2nd stage at around 3.5.
And it resets back from 1st stage if ya let off before completeing 2nd stage squeeze if you decide not to shoot.

So you think the 2 bump grooves in the receiver are worn too deep?
I took that pic on 4x.

When you say overiding sear type.
Do you mean an aftermarket like the Timney featherweight???
My main question about the Timney is, is it compatible with a beuhler low profile safety?

Just got done looking at their web site.
Can get one set at 1.5 pds.
Would actually like a trigger like my mod 70.
No take up and crisp, breaks like glass.
About 18 to 20 oz.
24 oz from a Timney would be GTG.
Just their, ready to touch off.

Tried to call their techs.
Gone for the 4th weekend

Trigger works proper.
But Im also open to any advice.
Never stop learning.

My mod 70 ot6 aint seen the woodline since I got the 98.
Owned a Interarms Mark X in .243 back in the 80's. Wish I had it now for the action. Still have the nice Colt 1911 I traded for though.
Good post.
An overriding sear trigger is one where the trigger releases the sear; allowing striker to override it.This is how virtually every modern bolt action trigger, since the Model 70, works. While I like the simple two-stage trigger for it's reliability, something like the Timney is preferred by most. GD

Midsouth is down the road 3 miles.
They got Timneys.
All set at 3pds per their website.

Steve at the counter will let me install one.
See what it feels like compared to this original 2 stage.
74 some odd bucks and tax.
Get bored someday soon roll on down with rifle broke down.
Install it at the counter.
Put the stock back on
Check one out.

Got till mid oct to decide....

But I am gonna call the techs at timney and ask about compatibility with a buehler low position safety, which I dont see why it should not be.

Well here's my bottom line: The snide comment(s) by Theo Gallus seemed lame to me.

Now that renegade 50 has spoken up I supposed there is more than one way to interpret JB's comment. I read it as saying the comment by Theo Gallus was not a lame one.

I suppose it could have been read to say that the entire thread was "not lame", which I agree with.

However if what JB meant was that Theo Gallus ' comment was not a lame one, then....that's lame.

All of which is to say that pot shot(s) taken at a good natured gent willing to share his lessons learned deserve to be called out

And apologies to JB if I misread his post.

I did not misread theostolples post, and stand by my comments there.

Its all good guys.

Theo pee alot on his knees.

Being a dik takes work.
Exasperating actually sometimes.
The title of Renegade's thread was "Lame thread, polishing a 98 trigger". I said not lame Nothing else needs to be read into it. grin

The Buehler safety will work fine with the Timney if properly fitted. I have two rifles so equipped. I like the Buehler-type safety. The Bold trigger is similar in design to the Timney but the workmanship is not as good IMO. The Kepplinger is a good trigger and available as a single set. The housing takes up a lot of space and the Mauser has a small tang already. GD
Thanks man .
1st hand Info I need for sure.
Will be looking into the Timney more than likely.
Under 75 bucks plus tax.
Not a bad thing.
