Live trap, bird seed and a pellet gun.

I'll read the sticky on how to upload photos.

I can't believe the amount of damage in one day/night [bleep]

I've got Daisy Co2 BB guns that look like a 1911. They run 450 fps and are deadly accurate on squirrels and birds.

Had a problem with the first one I bought leaking Co2. Daisy sent me 2 back. No charge. How's that for customer service?

Poor little squirrels gotta eat too.

Uhhh....seriously?

If shots are 30 yards or less , I like my Beeman R7 in .177 for such work.

Safe and quiet for everyone but the vermin being sniped at...:)

You gotta quit hatin' on it.

I'm telling you, animals have uncanny senses.
Every time you squeeze off a shot of subsonic, it can sense the sound vibrations whizzing by him.

Take it from me. You need to change your approach.

Love is that universal language of ALL little critters!

Everything loves peanut butter.
Take a spoonful and share the love.
Next, set a reinforced box trap with some of that kind mouthwatering sweet peanut butter goodness as bait.
You can then become best friends and keep em as a pet..or
Relocate him with that open jar and give a farewell meal ...or
Eat em.
No use letting good ground squirrel go to waste.
After all, you plumped him up with organic feed and free range goodness.

Conibear 110 baited with a peanut...

Stacking squirrels like cord wood.
Bromathalin, Brodificoum, Bromodialone, or Diphacinone. They all work. Tom Cat is the popular source, found at your local suburban supply store. Along with the bait stations which allow the pesky rodents to feed, but keep your precious kitties and puppies safe.

If they canโ€™t drop off a tree into your garden....

Buy electric horse fence, and string it so itโ€™s 3.5-4โ€ off the ground.

then get popcorn and enjoy the show

Don't need pellet gun. 5 gallon bucket full of water to dunk trap in. Drown the bastard.
Posted By: Valsdad Re: Ground squirrels.. POS - 07/30/20
Judging by your name, I have a suspicion where you are.

You might try a Victor rat trap even, just make sure to wire it to something.

Maybe RatX if you want to go the poison route without endangering your dogs and such. I think that might be what removed the one I had eating the ornamentals in the yard.

let us know how whichever method you choose works out. The .17 would be way more fun than any of the trap/bait deals though.
Posted By: ringworm Re: Ground squirrels.. POS - 07/30/20
Roll a pound of tanerrite in peanut butter then bird seed. Sit a heavy steel plate onto the top to divert blast and get 7-8 at once.
Posted By: Ranger99 Re: Ground squirrels.. POS - 07/30/20
I used to promote the rat trap and peanut butter
thing, but since I learned how to use the 110's
in their runs, I've done 90% better
without the bother of baiting.
Just got one yesterday afternoon.
Got a small possum about 2 hours ago in the
reset. 2 pounds on the fishing scale.
Biggest I've caught in a 110 besides the duck
last year.
About the upper limit of a 110.
They're as cheap as a flimsy rat trap and
built 20 times better.

( I should say here that these are the bushy
tail tree squirrels- probably more destructive
than a ground squirrel)

Vasalia6mm: I would use a Rifle in caliber 17 Mach2.
These bullets are very frangible and the report is quiet enough not to bother many if any of the neighbors (if you have them) - richochets are extremely rare with these bullets (Hornady) and I can't recall ever hearing one when the offending Ground Squirrels are struck.
Badgers will be along next to make their den holes VERY large (if you have Badgers in the area) so get on top of this.
I have friends that "trap" them if shooting is not an option in your area.
I have never had to resort to that so not much help there.
What part of the world are you in?
Good luck.
Some faster breeds of dogs can catch them if that is an option - sic'em boy!
Hold into the wind

We had 3 or 4 ground squirrels in a rock pile across the road from the new place. They would beeline across the road and end up under our deck. They also discovered the giant boulders I placed in the front yard and had decided to burrow under there as well. We have a Jack Russell that would chase them and end up in the road. We need a fence but may not get to it until next year. Anyhow, I shot one and threw him in the rockpile across the road and I guess it freaked the rest of them out, they haven't been back in two weeks.

Never seen that before. The little 17 HMR has some magical powers!

Try the RatX or Mouse X as I mentioned.

Supposedly non-toxic to dogs, cats etc. Plugs up their GI system from what I've read. If you can get them to eat it, it might work. Might try mixing it in some peanut butter?

I had one bothering the tulip bulbs I had outside the dog yard. I tried the traps and missed it a couple of times and put out some RatX I have for the woodshed. Can't say for sure, but I haven't seen the thing for a few months. Works on rats and mice, so I figured a squirrel is kind of a big rat, sorta.

Iโ€™m going to hang a feeder by my garden, start catching them. They Fuucked up at least a hundred of my tomatoes this year

Netherlander Kookier Hunje, she's up to 24 now. One would think they would learn about the dog (killing machine) in the back yard.

Different approach for killing 60 squeakers an hour at a range of 200 yards with 223 in a alfalfa field....... and getting rid of one ground squirrel family in the backyard garden.

This 22 cal air rifle has a screw on suppressor

I'm gotten rid of about 40 so far this year... just two more yesterday....

The poisin I use on them is a 20 gr XTP out of a 17 HMR...

Shoveled up those two on a shovel and laid them out in an open area in the back yard...

went to the store, and came bag within 15 minutes..

The two carcasses were gone...Guess the turkey vulture found them real quick....

Big suckers... size of a good size tree squirrel...
Posted By: Valsdad Re: Ground squirrels.. POS - 07/31/20
Might have been others of their kind that ate them up John. They like protein in their diets from time to time. Eat each other's young or so I've read.

But the vultures are good at their jobs. Clean up road kill rabbits and kangaroo rats in the morning, nothing left by evening.
Posted By: Seafire Re: Ground squirrels.. POS - 07/31/20
Geno, we have a fair herd of Turkey Vultures hanging around here, off of what use to be a golf course...

that is why I put them out in the open.. if the Vultures don't take them,

the coyotes are taking them at night....
Posted By: Valsdad Re: Ground squirrels.. POS - 07/31/20
Funny year here, must be the drought or something.

Vultures usually pass through in the spring heading for the mountains and further north. The we see them again on the southern migration. I experiences the same thing in the wheat lands of E. WA. Usually didn't hang around.

For some reason, this year they've stuck around. More critters dying from lack of open water? More getting killed on the roads searching for water? Had one circling near our place the other day even. I was even showered up as I recall. grin

Because of the chickens and our dogs when I kill something, like a rat or squirrel I try to get it away from the place so they don't get accustomed to handouts. Mice go on the tire surrounding the well head though, the magpies and jays usually get them that day.
Posted By: KRAKMT Re: Ground squirrels.. POS - 07/31/20
I just sold our former house on 4 acres. While getting it ready for market I shot 62 of the .... Richardson ground squirrels. I used a 22 mag that was spot on.
New people should have fun with trying to defend the yard.

Dont know if they were ground squirrels or some other form of western ground rat thing.
FT Hunter Liggett was over run with the frigging things on the catonment area in 1993.
The eco nazi,s were live trapping em and relocating em out in the back 40.
For everyone they got their were probably 15 others running around..
All the lawns around the barracks , chow hall, shoppette, housing
Looked like the fugging moon..
Gawd forbid if they killed the little fugga,s...

Company was out their doing JTF6 and Civilian LE agency observation ops in 4 man teams on Marijuna growing ops in Los Padres NF off Rt 1.

Anyways the PL says SSG E go to S4 draw a case of 1640 855.
And take your team to the range feild fire area and use it however..

Field fire area had iron mikes in some of the big draws .
Set up along a long ridge bout a mile long with spurs running off it in areas, some of the draws are 300 400 m in lenght leading into the main ridge.
Drop off Cpl Slyvis, lohr, and dombroski in one draw.
I snag up a 180 bandoleer.
Tell em have fun , shoot up the rounds
Police up the brass and dunnage.
Im going up 2 or 3 draws and whack some rats.
We all had A2,s

I probably got 20 or 25 of them little fuggs.
855 just blow em right up.
Sometimes they would do the peeker coast clear look over their berm hole schitt.
Wrong answer ground rat..
855 punch right the thru dirt on em.
Funny as hell shooting at em when they got caught in the open between holes.
Dump rounds on em trying to dodge rounds and schitt
Delibrately cut em off and make em change directions with impacts in front of em at times.
Dumb little fuggs get flustered sometimes and just stand still doing that meercat stand up sttaight routine wondering wtf is going on.
Boom.....
Lol!!
Fugg em up.
Blow em up or just let em do the curly shuffle.
Yotes gotta eat out their too.
So much for the eco nazi relocation program back on the base area.

LOL!!!
I'm thinking about a new method .

I think that I'll put out a box of Little Debbie snack cakes. When they go for the.bait, let em be.
By the time they get through the box, their arteries will be so clogged, they'll give themselves a heart attack.
Renegade,

That's the best bill Murray impersonation I've heard.

WTF?

Speak English sometimes please, not Army!

WTF are 855s, the green tips? AP? certainly not tracers in that country.

Odds are you were dealing with California ground squirrels, known in some places as Grey Diggers. Fuggers can be serious serious pests.

Have we come full circle back to the 17 HMR yet? The little 17 HM2 is probably even better, but I don't own one so its all HMR here.
Posted By: Seafire Re: Ground squirrels.. POS - 07/31/20
When they are really out over on the east side of the Cascades over in Klamath... I've had afternoons, that eastern guys would not even believe.. with a 10/22 I've wasted well over a 1000 in several hours....

you either leave because you ran out of ammo, or you have a big headache from scope squint...

but volume isn't the fun part... its blowing the little suckers up with a 223...

and Rennie...military ball ammo, ain't no where near as fun, as say a VMax... and you don't aiim to him the squirrel for the best results... you bounce the bullet fight in front of them, when they stop and stand on their back legs to look around...the riccochet hits them like an RPG... can blow them 8 feet in the air, and they come apart like you just shot a balloon....

shot one a few weeks ago, in the back yard with a 17 HMR, around the perimeter of my wife's swimming pool...
it was in front of her privacy fence...bounce the 17 right in front of it, on concrete.. there were rat guts on my wife's fence, up to belt buckle height rat body parts in a 5 feet radius....swept those up in a shovel with a broom, and used the water hose and rinsed the guts off the fence...the birds ate those real quick...

killin em is the best part of their existence.. or use...

Try putting Wrigley's chewing gum down their holes. Supposedly that works for chipmunks. The chipmunks love it but can't digest it. Bye bye chipmunks. I tried it once and the gum disappeared. So did the chipmunks.
