There is often talk here on concealed carry. What about open carry? Is it legal where you live?

No one though Roy Rogers was a danger.

Nowadays, I'd consider an armed "Gay Ranchero" dressed like that a serious threat.

Open carry = first one shot. It is legal here.

I picked Roy as an example of a well dressed person openly armed.

All I know is that in environments where lots of regular folks are carrying open, bad guys tend to be very well behaved.
Posted By: steve4102 Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
Open carry is legal here.

But it still requires a permit.

The MN permit is called a Permit to Carry, either or.

I do both, impossible to conceal in the hot summer when wearing shorts and light tops.

Those that think they are hiding their firearm when wearing ultra light summer clothing are only fooling themselves, everyone else can spot them a mile away.

No open carry in Floriduh. It's a PITA to hide a Ma Deuce.
Posted By: OldmanoftheSea Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
I seem to recall that it was illegal in parts of Texas...

Definitely in NY (pistol anyway)

As dumb kids we used to call the police and ask questions.
(It was legal to walk around naked with a loaded shotgun as long as you unloaded it to cross the street.)

Open Carry is pretty much the definition of "to keep and bear arms". is it not?

Is it open carry in the woods? Where do yo draw the line between sporting and carry?

It was legal to open carry (and didn't require a license) in Florida from its first colonization till the early 1980s, when its constitution was altered to prohibit it.

Legal here with carry permit. I do it when I need to. Cause I would rather open carry than not carry at all.

Prefer concealed when possible though

Not sure how open carry makes you more of a target than say someone IWB and printing like crazy. Most people aren’t paying attention anymore. Too busy with phones

Yep, they should prohibit Brinks crews from doing it. Folks are always shooting them first.

Open carry is legal here, and I do it when I'm not in town, as I live out in the sticks. Nobody cares at the little country stores, or when you are hauling off trash to the public dumpsters. I choose concealed carry the rest of the time.

Not ubiquitous enough locally to put it into practice, though legal with a CHL/permission slip.

What I like about open carry laws aside from lining up with the Constitution is that the "printing" angle that a lot of Concealed Carry laws incorporate. Open Carry also makes me first think Plain Clothes Law Enforcement initially. I don't open carry preferring stealth as much as possible but it's a personal choice.

Yeah, not a smart tactic IMO.

Concealed gives the element of surprise that open carry does not.

Open carry used to be the ONLY way to carry in NM.
From the territorial times, the thinking was that honest men showed their weapons - only dishonest folks hid them.
Now, you can carry concealed - but only after classes and taxes. smile

Open carry for Texas CCW holders was signed into law in 2015. As expected, practically nobody open carries. I've only seen 3 people open carry since the law was passed.

Yep, don’t have to worry about “printing” (I teach all mine to write in cursive anyway) and I don’t have to worry if my shirt rides up while I’m on my bike or if I “expose” it while digging in my pockets. Makes it easier to carry a full size pistol without wondering if anybody can tell. Ain’t nobody looking that closely at my old ass anyway.

The imminent victims might be staring at their little iDiot screens, but the guys who are about to start something are looking VERY closely for anybody carrying. They're a lot more worried about the hidden ones than the ones they can neutralize first.

Thanks For the update Chisos.

TX treats your truck as home right? You can keep one there?

Otherwise a rifle rack in the window would require a CCW, or so it seems
Posted By: mudhen Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
As Mark mentioned, open carry has pretty much always been legal in here in NM, even before statehood.

When I first moved this part of the world about 30 years ago, I would guess that 25-30 percent of the locals carried openly everyday--mostly older males that had grown up here. Virtually all of the local ranchers and most of the ranch hands did so, too. A few years ago, neighboring Arizona approved it as well, and the incidence of open carry in our community actually increased, as you no longer had to remember to put your pistol in the glove compartment or the console of your vehicle when you crossed the state line.

I have carried openly way more often than concealed--even after the latter became legal--and still do so.

Posted By: kevinJ Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
I don’t doubt you. There are times when I sincerely cannot concealed carry. Rather than take a NAA 22 mag or derringer in my pocket I chose to open carry a Glock 19 or 43 at those times. I can’t hit the target at 10 yards with that derringer, and I have tried to get proficient. I prefer concealed for sure, and do it probably 95% of the time. I prefer the advantage of surprise

If I’m going to carry a concealed pistol that is printing like crazy and blatantly obvious I’ll just go open carry at that point. Might as well. Both are obvious. Just my opinion on it though.

Carry what your proficient and comfortable with, how your comfortable. But do it EVERYDAY

I would think open vs concealed depends a lot on location, one preference or the other may not fit all situations or locals...

I'd say do what works for you, what you're comfortable with...

CCW here, regardless of what's Kosher.

YMMV

Besides, concealed carry makes your surprise like a gift...better to give than to receive.

A local attorney I know, who also teaches Concealed Carry classes, performed an experiment a few years ago in which he wore nice jeans or khakis, a starched solid-color button up shirt, cowboy boots, and a 1911 in a nice belt holster. He dressed that way for several weeks, going about his business in local cities, and never got questioned by anybody except those who knew him well. People just assumed he was with the local Sheriffs Department or something similar. I'd imagine a guy could also dress somewhat like our Fish and Game officers in muted-tone tactical pants, black boots, a beige or olive polo shirt, and a Glock on a black web belt, and nobody would be the wiser. When clean-cut people happen to look like they are "official" in some capacity, it often draws little attention if they are armed. Of course, you could not represent yourself as LE in these instances. That should go without saying.....
Posted By: IndyCA35 Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
Open carry has been legal in Ohio, without a permit required, for over 200 years. Yet I've never seen someone carrying openly in town. We have about 1,000,000 licensed CCWs. It's better to carry concealed. It doesn't attract attention among the ignorant.

There is definitely something to that, plus Ive heard a number of times from LE at all levels " Street people don't wear leather" referring to the holsters...

Wabigoon,

Good question. I've studied this subject and taught those who have ears to hear in time past.

Are you considering open carry in your area?
If so, feel free to contact me. I wish I had time, but it would take too long right now. I need to get back to work after a meal.

Only time I open carried, I was wearing a CAS outfit at a local hotel for an NRA fund raiser. We were invited to appear with full gear, guns, etc.

It went over well, but that was a special event and we were there by invitation. To say the least, I wasn't used to going around wearing a pair of Colt's in a double holster belt, but did it anyway. We did get a few smiles and notice of our weapons. Not saying I'd go around town so decked out. I was a bit self conscious, very aware of my Colts, which were sorta flashy to begin with, engraved, case colored with ivory handles.. Oh well...

Legal here in Wisconsin and I wish it didn’t have the stigma. It would be nice to be able to open carry more often but as it is you just stand out like a retard.

I see maybe a half a dozen people a year carrying locally and they always have cheap guns and [bleep] holsters.

It’s legal in Colorado. I followed a young woman that was open carrying in walmart for a few minutes to see if she had “situational awareness”. I could have had that weapon easily since she was not paying attention.

See some open carry around my burg.
Usually nylon holster and a Taurus.
Posted By: hookeye Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
I see concealed guns all the time.....even when completely covered.

Often though its a fat fugger w pants falling down, reaching for an item higher on a shelf.

Taurus or Glock hanging out.

I dont really open carry, try to keep my full size guns completely covered. But when hotter and wearing lesser, I also dont give a chit if the holster sticks out a little bit.

3/4 covered and most people on phones......still pretty invisible LOL
Posted By: bluefish Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
What's the matter with a taurus?
Posted By: Dirtfarmer Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
Yeah, open carry could just be a quick and easy free gun for a perp...

And, be sure to hand'em the extra mags when they grab it...

Again, IMO, there are more effective tactical uses of a weapon.

Posted By: Rock Chuck Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
It's legal here but I rarely see it. When you do, its usually someone wearing some kind of security company uniform.
Posted By: BillyGoatGruff Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
I like both to be legal. In a perfect world I've got my roscoe tucked away and nobody sees it till I show it to them. In the real world an odd movement or stretch could either show the print through my shirt, or maybe the butt is exposed. At that point you're not concealed anymore and panic ensues. Also, I wear a large revolver out and about when I'm hunting or woods bumming. Sometimes in a belt holster sometimes in a shoulder rig. If I want to stop at the gas station and grab a can of snuff or a pop I don't want to have to leave my gun in the truck.

For the chicks wearing shorts and flip flops, just get a [bleep] and glue it to your forehead. Nobody will notice the gun you have on.
Posted By: billhilly Re: Open Carry? - 08/11/20
Good grief. Some are acting like the only way to safely carry is to keep it in a pistol safe inside a backpack to keep those nefarious creepers from snatching it. I’m going to keep using my Summer Special and if my shirt rides up while I’m reaching for a box of crackers on the bottom shelf at the grocery store, I guess I’ll just have to endure the horror.

You need to train/ practice a little. Open carry is a personal choice but holds no advantage. I have yet to see anyone open carrying in a level 2 or better retention holster which is a pretty good indicator of the naive. It will be about 107* F here today and when I go out I will wear my G19 AIWB w/ shorts and an untucked polo shirt. No one will have a clue. I dryfire practice several times/ week w/ emphasis on weapon presentation from concealed. Using a shot timer I can repeatedly draw and fire from retention in one second and manage sub 2.5 second Bill Drills.

for many their gun is like a comfort animal. Others take self defense shooting seriously and work at gaining and maintaining proficiency. These threads frequently expose the fact that many gun owners are not serious shooters. If you think you are good enough you are wrong.

Legal to carry while hunting or fishing, concealed or open carry is not specified in the statute.

Florida, too. Loaded in glovebox is okay, even without a concealed carry license. Also, open carry is legal without a license while fishing, hunting, camping, hiking in the woods, etc.., and on your way to and from these activities. Which begs the question, how does a cop know that you're not on your way to or from a camping location, for example, and just stopping to get gas, or to grab something at the store?

The Right to Bear Arms means the Right to BEAR ARMS.

The concealed-carry-only snobs (and they are very snobbish and elitist) often cry "you'll be the first one shot!!!", and "somebody will just steal your gun!!!", which really grates my nerves. Now, before any of you try to show examples, there ARE instances of people having their guns stolen from them (nobody "shot first" yet, that I am aware of). On another message board, someone posted a list of news stories of people who were supposedly open carrying and had their guns stolen. It was several, I don't remember how many it was. Still, not exactly an overwhelming number. I read them all. A few were cops, struggling with a suspect.. not exactly relevant. About half were concealed carriers who let their guns show in some way, and weren't paying attention to the world around them and generally doing stupid schitt, and the rest were actual open carriers... who weren't paying attention to the world around them and generally doing stupid schitt. THIS is the problem. It goes way beyond "situational awareness". So many people are utterly oblivious to what should be very obvious dangers around them. Dangerous places, and dangerous people.

I am all for open carry. But I see people with a pistol in a concealed type holster.. open top, no retention strap of any kind. And invariably, they will wear it on their right side BEHIND THEIR BACK, at about the 4:00 position. AAAAGH! Any jackass can walk right up and yoink the gun away from you, no problem. Dumb question of the week. Ask any uniformed cop. There are too many folks out there lacking values, morals, fear or the least trace of any humanity or restraint. Ask that cop how seriously he takes weapon retention and situational awareness. If you think your gun is a talisman that bad people fear you need to pay more attention.

You need a permit to open carry?

I carry concealed in public though either is legal. There may be the occasional printing but the vast majority do not notice what is around them and I haven't knowingly been made in 35 years. I will continue to carry concealed when in public for two reasons:

1) I don't own a decent security holster for my current main carry guns and don't plan on buying any at this time.

2) If someone open carrying has a preventative affect thereby providing a measure of security to others nearby, why should that someone do so? Why should they provide a measure of security to others when those others will not only not provide for their own protection but will not reciprocate to others? I'll help those who suffer misfortune but when they willfully chose otherwise for themselves and others, then I have less compunction.

Posted By: Happy_Camper Re: Open Carry? - 08/12/20
Open carry, or concealed carry.
They are both detailed in my Bible clearly.
God has given His people the rights that we have to have the means to defend against harm of self, family and community.

I could name a handful of police/sheriff that are honorable. They've gone against the corrupt system to stand for protecting people's rights. I support and applaud their stands. It nearly cost one friend his life. His co-workers conspired to get rid of him.... permanently.
He ended up with serious injuries. He nearly died.
He and my fellow laborers in liberty believe the same. NO permission needed from the gt employees. They should see themselves as public servants, not the masters to usurp their will over those of Christ.

Then to answer the question of whether the uniformed public servants will support us against supreme tyranny? The following was proven to be a sad realization. It also demonstrates a wonderful miracle on this very subject.
I taught combat, hand to hand and small weapons.
My students need not fear the violent common thieves or rapists. They had more risk from the ungodly laws that tie their hands from legally carrying a weapon for defense. Theyd likely be arrested and thrown into cages.

I prayed for the ability to carry any weapon, for my trained students and fellow countrymen of this wicked state over run with evil in high places.
God answered my prayers to grant our state the free exercise of the rights that He gave us to have the means to defend ourselves with whatever weapon of our choosing. .... Including NO PERMISSION SLIPS NECESSARY from the servants.

First:
Prayer according to James 5:16-18

"The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.". https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/James-Chapter-5/
Second:
The legislation was introduced by a rare honorable congressman that God raised up.
Third:
The battle.... spiritual battle by Satan's demons spilled over into his physical servants.
The police, sheriffs and deputies all over the state fought it and lobbied AGAINST US with all their might and money that they stole from us!
This showed us what kind of "men" they were.

Guess what?
Conclusion:
The LORD still gave us the victory!!!
We the people can carry any weapon we choose without them having legal means to throw us in a cage! Praise the Lord from the top of my lungs on the spiritual battlefield against tyranny!!!

It’s legal here. The INTENT of “open carry” here was to prevent prosecution of someone that is attempting to carry concealed and their weapon is inadvertently exposed as it might be when reaching for something on the top shelf at a store.

The ONLY time I “open carry” is when I’m working or hunting here at the Ranch. Otherwise I’m 100 % Concealed Carry in public.

You need a permit to open carry?

Yep. In TX it’s called a License To Carry. Covers both. Up until 3 years ago, only Concealed Carry was legal. With a Concealed Carry License.
Like most states, our laws aren’t perfect here. We don’t have Constitutional Carry. But because of our extensive background check to get the License, we do have Reciprocal Agreements with 40 other States.

Legal here, i dont unless it's a single action revolver.
Then I try to cover it, if possible.
Not ashamed of my guns or hunting, but its not something I broadcast.

The talk is about open carry making you a target, and that alludes to shot.
What about gun grab?
Everybody here is a 100% on the ball, ready to fight, badass sumbitch, so it
would never happen. Right?

Dumbass around here is often seen with a LCR in a holster at about 5 o'clock.
I stood behind him in line before covid. 2 feet away.
And laughed.
He thought he was bad, had a gun and everything.

1-2 seconds he could have been slammed in the back of the neck and lost that gun.
By the time he realized what was happening, it would have been over.

Pretty much same here. I carry concealed by I know I " print" pretty bad on occasion...but as someone said, nobody notices, they are all too wrapped up in themselves..

Had one occasion when a cop came up and talked to me, I had to be "printing" pretty bad cause I was in a T-shirt, but I was in K9 gear and the gun was never mentioned, if indeed it was even noticed...

Guy explained it to me once.. Concealed carry is for protection. Open carry is for attention.

Open Carry is State Law in Ark.

No, I'll never calm down or take my liberty for granted.
It's because of God's intervention that we don't live like communist china.
We've lost so much and act like its no big deal.
I have seen victory in my state on this issue. If I were in your shoes, I'd be memorizing and seeking the details of what may work in your states.
But just like I've been told.

"For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand..."

Open carry is legal here, even (so far as the state is concerned) in a bar, with the bartender's consent. I've never seen anyone enter a bar wearing openly, but twice while discussing guns bartenders have asked me to bring one in so they could check it out. Interestingly, carrying concealed in a bar without a CCW carries a lesser potential sentence, than doing so if you have the CCW. Maybe on the assumption you should know better?

It used to be a crime in Florida to accidentally expose your concealed handgun that way. About five years ago, maybe more, the law was changed so that momentary, unintended, displays of the firearm in the holster are no longer prosecutable.

Seen a man in Lowes while back, open carry 1911, maybe Lucchese boots, spurs. Haha. Had some of those blue jeans that chicks wear with the sparkly rhinestones on the hind end, mullet, obese medium sized mutt/mix dog on a leash.
His significant other came around the corner (a female) looked like wannabe faith hill. Jeans just about matched.

CC carry is what I prefer. I usually have a Glock 43X or 26 in my front pocket at all times, and if I'm going out some place and wearing a nice collard fishing shirt I'll stick a Glock 19 on my back hip as backup. I look for old men walking around with their shirt tails out and assume that they are armed. People that open carry around here look like jackoffs and take my attention away from my environment. My thinking is you should at least try to attempt to conceal your pistol, but to each their own.

Good enough for this guy......Just saying...

I respect the opinions of those that think otherwise, but I don’t believe carrying open truly makes you the proverbial target #1 in most self defense cases. Your lack of situational awareness is what makes you the target first and foremost in my opinion. Watch the videos, and a common theme is head in phones, or paying no attention to there surroundings at all. Your a easy target then. We all have lapses in our awareness of surroundings for sure. When I’m at a local country market I can tell I sometimes am not paying enough attention and catch myself with back to the door. Won’t catch me doing that in a city for sure. Wife thinks I’m paranoid. Maybe I am

The odds any of us end up in a self defense situation with a pistol is unlikely at best. You don’t get to chose when it happens though if it does. So I carry all the time when I’m not at work( prohibited at work unfortunately). In doing so I feel that for me personally, and the places I would typically go open carrying, I am better served open carry with shorts and a t shirt that fits comfortably than wear concealed in a baggy shirt.

I also carry a vertex edc pack a lot. With 3 Young kids lots to carry it seems. I found I couldn’t get the pistol out in under 5 seconds with it from my back.Just didn’t work that great at primary carry. I still keep either extra mags or a 2nd pistol in the bag depending on what I’m carrying on body.

I piss a lot of meth heads and pill junkies off at work regularly. So maybe I am a little paranoid.

I've never cared about how someone carried but, when the pistola comes out of the holster
you've got my UTMOST attention!!!!!

Happened to a group of co-workers in the 90's.
Karen, was an off duty cop.
Roadblock felony stop was the result.
Funny, it made the paper, made the responding cops look stupid.

Guy with gun was a really rough looking, and acting dude.
But, totally legal. And cut loose
Posted By: EdM Re: Open Carry? - 08/12/20
Here in north Idaho I see open carry a handful of times a week. Back in the Texas hill country I see about zero.
Posted By: ENorton Re: Open Carry? - 08/12/20
In Wyoming it is legal as long as you can legally own a gun. No permit needed. Some carry open, most do not but if you do no one pays much attention.

Yep, rarely have the owb on, but don't care about the iwb getting shown. It's hot as [bleep], I'm not wearing much, so it's not hard to figure out there's a gun or two hiding out.

Texas Castle Doctrine extends to your vehicle. Unfortunately, the legislature still doesn't have its act together on this as, if they haven't changed it, it's still not legal to display a weapon while in your truck. You can have, with a permit , a pistol in a holster on your belt, but you can't have a pistol sitting on your dashboard. I know, it's a little goofy. There was always a hard line between carrying a pistol and having a rifle/shotgun in your vehicle. When I was a kid, wasn't a truck went by that didn't have a rifle and/or shotgun/s hanging in the back window.
