Off to Korea. He came home fine with a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Lost him suddenly just after his 88th birthday June a couple of years ago just a few days after I visited him in California and learned of his death weeks later as Carrie and I were in the bush of Namibia.

Part of our Conservative fight here in Virginia... my dad was very active. He passed in February.

My Dad

I had no idea about this... found 100% by accident looking for Probate stuff on his Estate.

Part of the Permanent Record for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

* FYI... For those that do not know... Virginia was taken over by Democrats (House, Senate and Exec.) in November 2019... so the Bill is really quite a shocker to have passed.

PII... whatever.

Dad on the right with his two hunting partners, Foster and Ray, they killed a lot of deer and stuff, had some real stories and adventures... Ray and dad took our mule into a wilderness hunting bear, Ray shot a bear and it fell over a 10ft bank, Ray ran over excited and slipped over the bank on top of the bear, Dad laughed his ass off as Ray scrambled back up not knowing if the bear was dead or not... luckily it was dead. I took that photo, probably '79, we were deer hunting, walking back to camp I shot a forky at close range in the flat, only had a spine shot because of a downed tree, it screamed like a woman for 30 seconds when it went down. Those guys made a big deal out of me scoring, wasn't my first deer but was with them. Ray and Foster have been gone for some time now.

Me and Dad last weekend, Dad's 89, last of our parents alive. I just got in from hunting elk with Enrique, who has an archery tag, that morning, wife said I look like I'm taking a chit... that's what happens when you take me off guard with the camera...

Dad was born in 1913. Died in 1991. He graduated from UF, undergrad and law school. and Emory University with his Divinity degree and a masters. A brilliant speaker, organizer, minister and a wonderful father. Dad was a country boy, and taught me hunting, fishing, and the love of the outdoors. I have his old Clauss hunting knife. Learned to dress game with that one.

Here is dad with we 3 boys on a salmon fishing trip last weekend. Last November he developed gangrene in his foot due to an infection (he is diabetic). He lost part of a foot. Then he developed a bleeding stomach ulcer due to meds, and passed out at home due to low hemoglobin (6.5). We were very thankful that he was able to go with us! We dont know how long we have with him yet, but we treasure these times. This trip is a 10 year tradition. Henderson Harbor Lake Ontario.

Respect. Those combat engineers were of huge importance.

By the way Ingwe, if I had been one of the liberators of an extermination or concentration camp, there would have been a LOT of dead German guards.

I do not think I could have held back, although it would have haunted me later.

He was a mustang officer, coming up through the enlisted ranks before going through Air Cadets and becoming an officer.
He went on to fly the T-6, T-28, T-33, F-84f, F-85, F-100, T-37 and T-39. We lost him in '99 to a tumor in his head.

The Germans had abandoned the place, knowing the Americans were coming.

Not all the germans got out of Auschwitz in time though, and you can guess what happened....

Capt. Dad, US Army Medical Corps. He was in from 1944 through 1946 and overseas in Europe from Nov. 1944 until he was discharged in '46 so this was probably taken some time after the war. He was a surgeon in a field evacuation hospital operating about a mile behind the lines and was in Patton's Third Army but that's all I know, never did get to ask him about where he was during the Bulge.

Mom was able to be with him for most of the war which was highly unusual. He died in '06 at 92 and my brother died in '10 of a stroke.

My Uncle joined the Marine Corps during WW2 and never left the states, for some reason. My Dad joined the Army in mid 1941 and landed knee deep in the Pacific's activities. Looks like the experience slimmed him down a bit. He was in the 6th Infantry. The 6th holds the record for continuous days in combat,..219 on the Island of Luzon during WW2.

My actual father ( on the left) was born in 1926. He was an only son and a farmer. His dad was gassed in WW1 but lived until 1971.
My father was a good man and battled Colin Cancer for 5 years and died in 1962. I never knew him as I was not even 2 years at the time.
The man on the right became my dad in 1965 and took on a large family with me and 3 sisters and then he and my mom provided us with another sister. He passed away 9 years ago.
Anyway this is a roundabout way to say I was blessed with a great father and a great dad.
I surely do love and miss them both.

This was in a day wherein you wished you had more pictures but short of always carrying a camera around it mostly happened only on special occasions.

Dad had six brothers, three of which including him, landed in the middle of WWII. One brother was in the South Pacific and in a big battle (cannot recall the name right now) their battle ship was so beaten up it took them three months to make a friendly port on only one screw, no com’s, and more or less continual hand-over-fist bailing with buckets. Many casualties. He died the youngest of alcoholism and I surmise he suffered from the then unknown PTSD.

A second, was a medic in North Africa and was captured and endured a POW camp for the duration. He was a mild mannered man, a great bird shot, and I have find memories of him. Apparently he was the source of great encouragement among the POW’s and looked after everybody. He died of stomach cancer in his seventies. I do miss him probably the most and my dad of course.

Dad ended up drafted at 18, the youngest, and ended up in the Philippines where a sniper took the sole of his boot off along with the heel. How far away was he? Dad said he “heard him working the bolt of his Carcano and in hind sight was glad he wasn’t a very good shot. He was probably as scared as I was.” He had many other tales when pressed. He died just before Christmas 2017 at age 92.

None of them hunted outside of a traditional once-a-year pheasant hunt with my dad and brother number two and my two cousins.

I wished I had asked more questions but none of them were really conversational, more the quiet, humble, even taciturn-like.

Some of us cousins had to piece together the histories.

Thanks for posting. It’s a very interesting thread.
