Please don’t post that Indian Jones scene as rebuttal. It’s so gauche.

Swordplay!!! The good stuff!!!

Pretty cool. With that mud I wonder how many times they slid onto their asses while filming it.

Makes me wonder what a real sword fight looks like.

A "real" swordfight looks like two men trying to kill each other. In comparison, the scene here looks like some foreplay in a gay porno.

I vaguely remember watching some old Japanese movie that I thought probably had a fairly realistic swordfight, where two Samurai were squaring off against one another. No clinging and clanging swords (the Samurai sword apparently is not a battlefield chopper. It's more of a large knife. A razor to slice your opponent wide open). Most of the fight they were maneuvering around one another, looking for the opportunity to make their run and slash their opponent. After several failed runs, finally the good guy gets a good slash in, and the bad guy goes down.
It is a great movie! Very authentic

I can with all honesty say I’ve never seen any gay porn. Is there sword play involved?

Probably only during the foreplay. Maybe you have seen gay porn, but didn't know it. Movies like Spartacus.

I'll defer to your experience, but I've never seen a real sword fight or gay porn.

However, distinction needs to be made this is a duel, not a battlefield. Very different things.

Check out the Adorea Olomouc channel on youtube.

You can skip over the first 6 minutes of this if you want to get straight to the action.

Another little vignette.

Ah theatrical fencing. Dramatic looking but such non-sense. The turning your back to your opponent, twirling around like a ballerina is such bad fencing. In reality, a sabre fight is typically over very quickly. Look at Olympic fencing and you will see how quickly they connect. Rarely are there more than two parrys and reposte before a strike is registered. Of course that would be too quick and not enough drama for the movies. The best fencing actor was Basil Rathbone.

Kaywoodie:

In a strange coincidence I ordered "The Duelists" just the other night. Ridley Scott's first movie with Harvey Keitel and David Carradine as French Officers in the Napoleonic era.

Jorge: In 1979 my best friend in High School went to Notre Dame where he took a class from a Polish professor. This professor was in the Polish cavalry when the Germans attacked in 1939. Their horses were no match for even the early Panzers as the Germans blitzed through village after village. The slaughter was horrible as the Germans did not like the Poles. This old professor told my friend that the Poles quickly realized that the best they could do was to delay the German advances so that villagers might escape. He said at one village the Polish cavalry got in lines and charged the tanks, pistols in hand at the ready. The Polish troopers would get their horse to jump towards the tank and then shoot the horse in mid jump hoping the carcass could throw the track of the Panzer thus immobilizing the crawling metal pillbox. This professor was promptly run over and squished into the mud, mostly trapped under the horse. It took him three days to work his way out from under it.

I don't know how he survived the war and ended up teaching at Notre Dame almost forty years later, but if any of this was true, Guderian was fortunate that the Poles had no real armor.

Men.
Rob Roy, I was impressed with this and when he dispatches Guthrie with similar speed in the tavern...

Ranger Green;
Good afternoon to you my cyber friend, I hope the first day of November has been treating you acceptably and this finds you and yours well.

The movie you watched is really something and I've enjoyed parts of it several times on youtube over the years. I'll bet it was something to see on the big screen back in the day, you know?

Somehow all things that go bang, twang or slash/thump have always interested me, so listening to actual fencers talk about movie sword fights is a bit of a "thing" with me.

This chap liked the bits of this movie.

Edit - video will not post today for me, the joys of rural BC interwebs!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImPXMsnc2F4&t=189s

There's a whole channel called scholaglatoria who breaks down movie scenes as well as different types of swords and knives for their strengths and weaknesses.

The gentle reader needs to be forewarned this channel can lead down multiple rabbit holes, so please all be careful of the time allotted. wink

[video:youtube]https://www.youtube.com/user/scholagladiatoria[/video]

All the best to you all this fall.

Dwayne

One of my best teachers introduced me to Shintaro Katsu a few decades ago.... Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman.
He was not only one of the top swordsmen ever on the big screen, he was an amazingly convincing actor.
He demonstrated his incredible control of the blade by the fact that the "opponents" he worked with weren't accidentally killed by him during rehearsals. They didn't just use camera angles. They worked at contact distances where the tip would stop short of penetration, the dull blade could easily have knocked out all of the teeth or brain the stuntmen.

pretty good lee 24
Here I thought Ginther had a new gay porn movie coming out
There is true swordsmanship.

Then there is: SHOGUN ASSASSIN!
and if Japan made spaghetti Samurai movies, this is one of them:

Ranger,

I've checked around locally for years for this version of the Shogun Assassin. The only one that could be located didn't verify if it was the English narration or the Japanese. It was big $ too, so I put it off.
Just NOW, Guess what I found?.........

Sir, I saw the original release in the theater!

I would've loved to see that on the big screen.

I rented it many years ago from blockbuster and consider it my favorite Japanese movie.
The over the top surprise attacks, acting, the boy's narration, his james bond cart, cinematography, direction.....all excellent.

Hope you enjoy seeing this again.

its a sabre duel by cavalry fellas by the looks. with an agreement not to grapple. Wrestling was actually pretty common in sword fightrs, check talhoffers knights manual, or renaissance rapier instructions, also the samurai stuff. 1/3 of the books are usually devoted to grappling techniques, they read like a highschool wrestling manual. Also reading some of the old duels and fights of the day you'll read " Sir XYZ favored himself more as a grappler"

Reason being in real fighting not everyone observes distance like a neat movie duel, the two guys often collide, bind( swords lock together) or command( grab the opponents blade) and if you favor your grappling better than the other guy you just dont let go again. Into the colonial era duels tended to take the grappling out by agreement as it was seen as less gentlemanly. Obviously into the movie era you will sell a lot more tickets showing a neat standing duel, then two fellas wrestling in the mud. I dont think Errol Flynn liked getting dirty smile

Now, you want to talk about a truly great swordplay scene, then you have to talk Space Balls, Lonestar vs Dark Helmet.

Well, I enjoyed it.

Too busy to look it up right now, but one of the guys who was one of the actors for the Royal Armories before they mostly got schitcanned for budget cuts, and thus one of the foremost experts in the world on European martial arts, rated that saber duel as the best and most realistic sword fight in the movies.

You’ll notice that the guy who wins hardly moves. He tells the other guy that he swings his sword “like a flail” and that is obviously an insult while his movements are economical and precise. He is very much toying with the man to the point the guy finally asks him to get it over with so that he is not further humiliated.

Why is that?

My criticism of the swordplay was a setup to my joke about the sword fight scene in Space Balls.
