They worked at contact distances where the tip would stop short of penetration, the dull blade could easily have knocked out all of the teeth or brain the stuntmen.

I've checked around locally for years for this version of the Shogun Assassin. The only one that could be located didn't verify if it was the English narration or the Japanese. It was big $ too, so I put it off.
Just NOW, Guess what I found?.........

Sir, I saw the original release in the theater!

I would've loved to see that on the big screen.

I rented it many years ago from blockbuster and consider it my favorite Japanese movie.
The over the top surprise attacks, acting, the boy's narration, his james bond cart, cinematography, direction.....all excellent.

Hope you enjoy seeing this again.
