I've grown pickier about socks in my old age. I used to buy Walmart/Target etc. socks since my kids would raid my sock drawer I didn't want to spend much on socks. My wife swears by the Bombas socks but they seem to have a SJW slant to them. What's the consensus on good socks now? Seems it was Darn Tough for a while here.

Darn tough, Smart Wool or Thorlos for me.
Posted By: MtnBoomer Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/09/20
Been taking notes. Darn Tough or Smart Wool. Some small makers have been mentioned. A few have expressed dislike for the 'tight weave' of Darn Toughs, which is kinda what makes them good, lol... Evaluate models on height and cushion level desired which seems easier with DT to decipher than other brands. There's Thorlo and Bridgedale, Wrights, REI, Kennetrek? , Lorpen, Farm to Feet...

If'n I had to grab one pair and bug out it'd be Darn Tough Tactical boot height Extra Cushion T4033. Sticker shock warning, lol. . .

Lorpen are my first choice. Then Darn Tough.

Additionally, my uniform socks are Omni-Wool, and they are great!

I used mostly Smartwool for a long time. I tried some Darn Tough. Unfortunately, not too pleased.
I am back to Smartwool.

I have Smartwool, Darn tough and Wigwam. I prefer Wigwam merino lite hikers

I'm a Smart Wool fan but lately I'm pretty much all Simm over the calf socks. Best out there imo. Best deal around is Sportsman's Warehouse black friday sale on socks. Buy any pair get a second for $1. The Simm's were $32.99 this year but two pair for that plus a $1 ain't bad. Ymmv

What's your preferred work sock for work boots(safety toe). Preferably a decent thick white crew length or higher for 8" boots? Hopefully bulk packs.
Thanks

I’ve been wearing darn tough for a while, I like them.
Posted By: stevelyn Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/09/20
It depends..........everyday use or cold weather.

For everyday use I like the Kirkland brand of merino wool socks from COSTCO. They're over 70% merino wool and what I would consider medium weight. they come in 4-packs for about $16.00. And they last forever if you keep your talons trimmed back regularly.

For cold weather, nothing beats the military mountain socks. They're about 75% wool with the remainder being nylon for the latest batch I bought. They're heavy weight and you need to size your boots to accommodate them.
Posted By: gunswizard Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/09/20
Smartwool are good socks and seem to be pretty tough, I've had a couple pair for several years now and they're giving great service. Worth the price in my opinion.

"Bulk pack?"

For all but winter with appropriately sized boots I wear a Darn Tough light cushion. About $18 per.
Like this, but I do lower height.

If just stepping up from cotton, you might try the Costco merino socks guys mention.

Smart wool is my favorite

Over the last couple years, I’ve been very happy with Farm to Feet. All US made. Great quality. They aren’t cheap but they seem to last forever. Hopefully, somebody doesn’t come along and tell me that they too have a political agenda. Great socks!

Smart Wool for me. I tried a pair of Darn tough, still have them, there ok.

BTW, blister-free since the sock-snobbery phase began. Hahaha!
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/09/20
I don't need tough service, so Costco merinos have served me well. I get years of wear out of them. For really cold use like ice fishing, few socks (or hats and gloves) are better than Heat Holders.

Where are Costco socks made? Smartwool?

DT is USA made.
Posted By: Jim_Conrad Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/09/20
Another brand is carried by the American Sheep Industry Association.

Just type that in and type socks after that.

Costco Outdoor Trail merino wool blend. Like 22 rf ammo, I am stocked.

Darn Tough. Costco and Smartwool are not even close in warmth, longevity and comfort, not to mention the variety of lengths you can get. For example, no show length for low top hiking.
Posted By: Poconojack Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/09/20

Smartwool and a couple pairs of heavy Wigwams.
Posted By: Mr_Harry Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/09/20
DT’s, Filsons, smart wool. In that order. Sticker shock on the first two, but you get what you pay for.

The Bombas commercials make a big deal out of claiming they give away 1 pair of socks to hobos etc., for each one they sell. I think I should have the say of whether I want to give hobos socks so I stay away.

I've had good luck with DT and I go through cheap socks quickly. For me Carhartt's have been the worst.

SmartWool over Darn Tough, by a nose.
smartwool....

Since I’ve gotten neuropathy in my feet

I don’t need high dollar/heavy duty socks or even heavy gram insulated boots

I can’t feel chit from the ankles down. Works out great.

Cheap boot socks and dockers all season long in my tree stands and ladder blinds. LOL

‘Church shoes’ 🤪

Last package of Costco merinos were made in the US of A.

probably by immigrant workers looking to improve their lot in life though.

What about the “Railroad” brand socks they sell at the Co-Op?

Made in the USA.

I like the Members Mark socks from Sam’s Club.

Used to be Burlington brand. Made in USA.

I only wear black. Habit of years in the oilfield.
Posted By: CWT Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/09/20
I grew up in Statesville, NC home of Thorlo socks so I have been wearing them for years. Can't beat them for an everyday sock and I have some that are over 20 years old and I am still wearing them. They are much thinner than they used to be but still going strong. They make a good cold weather sock but I have been wearing smartwool over the last couple of years and I like them too. Thorlo used to have the contract for our military's socks but I don't think they do anymore.

Also,

I braved TJMaxx a couple weeks back because someone on here said they carry 2nds of the magic Darn Tough socks.

All i found were same thin a$$ church socks with gay a$$ designs.

May go well with penny loafers.

Gentlemen...

They say the finest merino comes from Montana....

Not sure why?

Maybe because the sheep are so happy and content?

I was just snooping around and see that Duckworth has 25% off your first order.

Ordered a couple items.

I started using those gheya$$ed thin church socks for my liner sock under a heavier pair of wool for cold weather. They work great and are the least expensive.

Was gonna order some online.

Reading the reviews.....

Kirkland wool socks v2.0 aren’t the same as the older ones?

Which ones are y’all saying are the good ones?

The older multi color or current grey style?
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/27/20
Dave, I finally wore out one pair of the dozen I bought years ago - how many years I'm not positive, but possibly a decade ago. I have an unopened package I bought two years ago and have no idea if they are the same as the first ones or not. All mine came in either a dark blue or a medium brownish tan color, but they're hard to tell apart now after a gazillion washings.

Thinking I might break open the unused ones to start the year off. I'll stash the old ones away just in case. Just went to look - the new ones are a four-pack, two dark grey and two dark blue. "Outdoor Trail Socks" listed as made in the USA with 72% imported merino wool. They do seem a bit thinner than the older ones. but otherwise look identical.

Edit: I notice that in online ads, the socks have a different fiber content. Mine list as 72% merino wool, 27% Nylon and 1% Spandex. The online ones show 70% merino, 18% Nylon, 10% Polyester and 2% Spandex. So there IS a difference.
Posted By: Ackleyfan Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/27/20
Try a pair of Dahlgren alpaca wool, best cold weather sock I've used!
Posted By: BigDave39355 Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/27/20
Rocky,

Thanks.

Your reply follows the reviews.
Seems the new ones are lighter weight.
Posted By: RockyRaab Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/27/20
As coinkydink would have it, not a minute after I posted that, SWMBO said, "I'm going to COSTCO." So I went along and discovered that those socks are now offered in a six-pack versus my slightly older four-pack, and the fiber content matches. So now I'm not sure if I have their V1 or V2 socks - but I now have 10 pairs of them!

Also picked up a new pair of golf pants and a sweatshirt to go with the socks - all in grey. Hitting a theme here!
Posted By: BigDave39355 Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/27/20
I’ll give them a try.

6pr /$20 beats 3 pr onmi-wool for $14 at Sams club.

Okay maybe 5-6 pair per year.

And maybe I'm fussy.

Been so warm I needed another lightweight version of underwear.

It's nice.

My wife bought me a few pairs of the orange toe darn tough's for Christmas. They are hard to beat especially when it things get sweaty in the summer. Seem to last a lot longer than other brands ive tried.

Usually buy some type of merino long john each fall aswell. If the stuff wasn't so expensive id have more
Posted By: 3bird Re: Darn Tough Socks Or ? - 12/28/20
I have a 6 year old pair of darn tough socks. I’ve worn them about once every 10 days since buying them. Since switching from cotton to wool my wife is jealous of how soft my feet are. I bought her some wool socks but apparently the softening of the feet is not related to wearing wool socks. I’m thinking about becoming a foot model.

I've been wearing thin 100% wool undershirts that I got on clearance from Ramlersway a couple years ago. Ramblersway has a lot of froufrou stuff, but some of it is a great bargain when on clearance. The downside to thin wool, is it's somewhat delicate when wet and it requires special care. That said I've found nothing warmer than thin wool base layers when active.

Here in Kentucky we don’t even need socks and shoes.
We start out young walking around on cockleburrs and stuff so we don’t have those sissy feet like you folks from other parts of the country have.
