Yeah, I’m about to take some profit. It’s been a good couple of years.
Posted By: OldHat Re: Check your portfolio now - 12/15/20
It seems counter intuitive given covid has devastated small business. Irrational?
Posted By: Simoneaud Re: Check your portfolio now - 12/15/20
agreed I like to fell out my chair!

Yea, up 18.9K in one day.
Looks on on the computer screen, but it's not real money until you spend it on something you can hold in your hand.

You simply have to hit the sell button.

It's been a good year for the investor. I hope the same can be said of next year, but I am skeptical.
I dumped a few dog mutual funds a few months ago that were lagging in the recovery. Not sure what the portfolio would look like if those had kept pace with the others but I think I’m right at 20% overall for the year when I looked yesterday. Wifey was a little less. Add another 1% today probably. The shares of two mutual funds I bought in March and April are up closer to 70% for just those transactions. FBGRX and POAGX. I dumped some oil heavy funds that was holding everything back

I have some buddies that are able to pull the plug and retire but are basing it all on playing the market. It seems crazy to base your life's savings on something that's just 1's and 0's and could be worth half what it is tomorrow what it was today. To be fair I have a fair amount invested, but I can make all my payments and buy food and gas if it all disappeared tomorrow. I see it as a gamble. Odds are better than throwing it down at a casino, but still.........

Thirty five percent change to the good since March of this year. And now here comes Biden to screw it up. Looking forward to the midterms and a reset. Three and a half years to retirement as today is my birthday. I may punch out in two when I hit medicare but I like working as long as I get my weekends off.

Trillions of stimulus money and 0% interest rates, with lots more to come, does have a salutary affect on the market - for the short term.
I just saw a 100% return on a foreclosure property. Obviously that doesn’t happen often, but If the real estate market crashes I have a piece of land. I can take a piss or plant a potatoe on it. We’re 40% real estate, 40% stocks and 20% cash right now, but I still prefer real estate by a wide margin. Long term I’d been better off to go all real estate except for the wife’s 401K her ex employer used to match 2-1 up to 5%.
What would the market look like without covid?

Used some of my gains this year to add some key acreage to our hunting property. Thank you again President Trump!

You can always lock it in at the bank for 0.25% interest.............there are conservative mutual funds if you are getting close to retirement or nervous about the more risky ones.

Giving financial advice is like giving marital advise.
That said what goes up comes down.
Fundamentals are being ignored and some time in the future the correction is going to come. THE question is just how far down the road can they kick the can. My .02

How does inflation correlate with the stock market? It appears to me we’re about to see a chit load of inflation. Where else can one hedge against it?

Exactly, the market loves the mint printing money. It makes for messy macros though.
BTW- Biden is about to print trillions more. So it ain't over yet.

Quick math and I think wife and I are about 40% real estate, 25% stocks, 25% cattle and currently maybe 5% cash.

Small timers here, no big $ in these parts.

I would absolutely hate to be solely dependent on the stock market for my retirement.

Looking to invest into land as time goes on.
Posted By: EdM Re: Check your portfolio now - 12/16/20
I am looking at property here to diversify. Maybe a few hundred acres within a couple of hours. My wife says go. I am meeting over lunch with a friend and former colleague tomorrow who has recently done the same.

Ed, if you don't mind me asking, Texas?

Or are you up north?
Posted By: mtnsnake Re: Check your portfolio now - 12/16/20
No worry here, do not have a portfolio. Lost it in the obama years recovering from a stroke.
Up $410K this year. Amazing!!
Posted By: MM879 Re: Check your portfolio now - 12/16/20
Pent up demand will propel the economy for the next two years. Industry is out of everything.

You're alive! Beats a portfolio anyday.

The last 15 years for me on a linear scale... invested mostly in GOOG and AMZN

Can you see where Trump got elected in 2016? he cut taxes and cut regulations.
YTD overall portfolio is around 45%. I did move quite a bit last week into more conservative holdings though. I've made what I need to and don't want the affect of a total shutdown coming soon.

Texas. As you know I have a chitpile of public land ten minutes from my place.

AMD, CVNA, GNRC, MELI,UPS,GUSH, and RIOT were very kind to me. Had a little cash held back and bought in March and April. Have 28% in precious metal which came back fine. Rig has finally come back into the black for me I bought it at $2 and was down by half for a while. Got killed with Diamond Offshore, completely rode 200 shares of it to the ground. Bought some Amazon not long ago, it's losing a little so far. bought 2 pharmacy stocks (HEPA, PBYI) that never did anything and got rid of them. Sold 2 I wish I'd kept, Jumia the African Amazon and Alaska Air. My little tax deferred account is what I brought with me when I retired 10 years ago. My wife is the one that can put it away. The owners of the clinic she works at double what she puts in. She is somewhat brave considering her upbringing. During the slump last spring she bought Halliburton and now it's about triple. She also took her cash and followed me into metals and UPS while they were down. She has about 20 co-workers and there are only 2 others taking advantage of doubling their investment. They would have to lose half their investment before they lost their own money.

+51% ytd and averaged +21% per year over the last 12 years. Been blessed. We have seen arguably the best 10 plus years of market returns ever. Ever. Been able to retire way ahead of schedule. I’m still heavily invested in the market not for me but for my grand young’ns.
Ed,

What part of Texas? I may want to move south from WA State soon and retire.

The market seems priced to perfection and I see very little perfection in the next four years. Most of the current gains are purely the result of money supply being forced on equities and the Fed is going to want their money back at some point.

Cute.
Why would the fed want that money back when they can put it on the cuff, and instead use it for leverage over the populace.
