Anybody here ever been exposed to rabies and had to go through the treatment protocol?
Use to hear about it being a couple dozen shots in the stomach, but that was when I was a kid. Have no idea if that was accurate, but apparently now its a 4 shot sequence?
Never known anyone that has gone through it.

I’ve been vaccinated for rabies. 2 shots, 6 months apart.
But that’s differenter.
I’ve not been exposed myself, but I’ve given rabies post-exposure prophylaxis many times in the ER over the years. We give HRIG (human rabies immune globulin) on day one (and only once), and we infiltrate in and around the wound as much as we can. It’s actually quite a bit (volume wise) for an adult. The rest we administer IM. We also give rabies vaccine on days one, three, seven, and fourteen. The vaccine is a piece of cake, as each one is just 1cc IM. But the immune globulin involves a buncha shots.
I hear that the rabies vaccines have nanobots that allow rabid dogs to take over your mind.
A woman who just had to take her kids to the ER or health department for every little skinned knee or sniffle, went to the S.W. PA heaalth department one day. Her one child had two small inflamed bumps on his neck resembling mosquito bites.
The health department dutifully insisted that both children get vaccinated for rabies IMMEDIATELY.....
Why???
I’m starting to hear Jaws music in the background......

When I was about 10 years old. Shots in the stomach. Not much fun. Of course that was 50 years ago.
Lmao
Lemmiwinks broke free and bit the kid
One time this city government guy from Tyler, Texas went over to Africa with a group from the city...it was some kinda goodwill sister city kinda thing...anyway, they were eating at a restaurant outdoors over there and a monkey ran up to the guy and bit him on the thigh, then ran back into the jungle. Dude had to come in and get rabies post-exposure prophylaxis as soon as he got back.
I schit you not.
Yep. And though a bat looks kind a like a rodent, they are actually a mammal.

One of my buddies that went on African Safari said the most fun animal to hunt there were Baboons. By far.

So is a rodent.

You been exposed??? We’ll have to “Old Yeller” ya ! 😜
Had post-exposure treatment last spring. One shot in the thigh and 4 in the shoulder weekly for a month. Crazy expensive too.

my buddies wife grabbed a coon by the tail that was ripping into her little dog on the porch and the coon latched onto her arm and wouldn't let go. my buddy smacked it with something until it let go. makes me cringe to think about it. she had to get rabies shots but pretty sure they were all in her arm. i do remember she said there was a bunch. and she got a nasty scar from it.
Our in-patient pharmacist told me the immune globulin alone is 16,000 dollars a vial, and for a 220 lb man it takes about two vials.

Wooo! 16k a pop!
My little guy found a bat today. He was kinda fuggin’ with it. The bat was kinda wonky. Flipping over and back hissing like a possum. Pretty sure it didn’t bite him though.
I took the bat to the county lab. Hoping it comes back neg.
I hope it comes back negative too.

Did it have a white nose?
Bingo!
And not just any ol bat. ..
The claim by the head nurse was that the two welts were so close together that they were very possibly the fang punctures of a " Vampire Bat."
😂
It would be funny if it weren't so.......
Funny.
I can only guess that the nurse mixed up Pennsylvania with Transylvania, the REAL place that Count Dracula lives. 😐
🦇
The poor kids took a nap and one had a couple mosquito bites I said.
I asked if the windows were open or closed.
The bedroom window was closed.
I asked how the "Vampire Bat" entered the room.
It might have somehow squeezed in through the closed door and frame was her suspicion.
Where was it when the mom came in?
It went out the same way.
Did you know that Vampire Bats don't even live in S. Western Pennsylvania???
🙄
Don’t believe it did, Geno.
Lab lady remarked it was a big one though!
I think it was a common brown bat. Kid said it fell off the roof so maybe it was just stunned. He said he didn’t touch it but I ain’t inclined to take the word of a 3 year old if it comes back rabid. Same kid turned up last week with a poisonous newt in his pocket. Lol.

Me too !

Hope it's neg. Used to do the rabies necropsies in the virology lab in fairbanks. You should have results tomorrow, if not tonight.
Good luck to your fella.

I had to get the shots back about 2006 or 2007. Had a steer on pasture that wasn't right, brought it in to the barn and was working with it so we got slobbered on but good. After the steer died, and I mentioned to the Vet that the moo sounded 'funny', he said we better get it tested. Apparently, that is a sign of rabies in cattle.
Anyhow, I got 6 shots of the IG stuff and a coworker (about 75 lbs lighter weight) got 5 shots. Since there was no bite, I got one in each shoulder, each thigh and each butt cheek. It was Workers Comp but the hospital bill for me was 14K, my coworker was just shy of 10K. Plus we had to get the follow up shots but I think I also got one on Day 28 in addition to days 1, 3, 7, and 14. None of them hurt, just a bit of mild soreness.
The Vet had been vaccinated but had to get booster shots (2?).
The 3rd guy on the farm hadn't been exposed but got vaccinated because other cattle might have been exposed to the sick one. That was 3 shots and about $500 IIRC. Steers were quarantined and couldn't leave the farm for 6 months to be sure none of the rest had it.

Does the kid know any witches? Maybe some offered him a popsicle to do some foraging for them.
Eye of newt and a little bat wing can brew up some pretty powerful stuff I've heard.

Yes, I know.
It was my little attempt at sarcastic humor about the Transylvania comment.
The Q&A was the summary of the conversation we had. I asked the questions.
Been exposed many times due to profession. But, I been vaccinated since 1989. I get boosted every 3-4 years when getting ready to go hunt Africa now. Haven’t seen a rabid horse now in years...but have seen quite a few.
When I was teaching at a veterinary college. We had one come in an exposed many students as horses (as well as cattle) don’t act typical. Fortunately, vet students all vaccinated in 1st year.

Back in the day, way back in the day, it was 14 shots (one a day) in the stomach area and they hurt. First 2 wasn't as bad as the last 12. They rotated from side to side each day and after the 2nd shot, both sides were sore, but they still poked you.
A friends wife had to take them about 20 yrs ago and he told me it was 3 shots. I dont remember if it was 3 in 3 days, or 3 in a week, or what. I've been told since then that it is 1 shot, but that's hearsay, I dont know anyone that's had the one shot.
No, and I hope I never do!

Are you an Aggie Dr of Vet Medicine??? 👍🏻
I was bitten by a dog whose owner was to lazy/cheap to get rabies shots for. I had to think about getting the shots.
I was told that the shots weren’t that bad. I didn’t get the shots and didn’t get sick.
Guy I worked with got bit by a bear in Idaho. Was sleeping by the fire and woke up to it clamped on his thigh. Had to get the series. Said it wasn't too bad.
My Dad got them when he was a kid, the stomach ones, he said it was painful.
I got the newer series in the butt cheek and arms. But it was probably 30 years ago now. I remember being a bit stiff in the arms and legs but not much else.
I had the shots last year. My immune globulin cost 37k for the first one and 100 bucks each for the vaccine shots given at day 0,3,7,and 14 for a total of 4 vaccine shots.

👍🏻 Best damn Vet School in the Nation! I worked at the Vet School and Lab Animal Research part time while going to school there. It’s grown so much since I left there.
The flying rodent came back neg. Batboy ain't gotta get any shots.
Phew.....Wasn't to worried, but damn if rabies don't give me the creeps.
Good. I’m happy to hear that.
Always wondered if hydrophobia was real
Had a guy stank so bad on my roofing crew, wondered if he had rabies.

It is, and it ain't pretty.

I seem to recall a series of regular shots for rabies (4?) before I went to Africa in ‘80.
Dog rabies is common there. Once I was eating inside a walled compound outside in my village and the sound of dog paws passed by, followed by running feet and the cry of ONNIOOO!!! (mad dog). They chase em down with poles or ladders, anything long enough to pin the dog down so they can whack it with machetes.
A little girl in the next village got bit but fortunately they had the gamma gobulin/whatever in stock at the mission hospital I worked at.
From what I was told by the hospital staff watching someone die of rabies ain’t pleasant, especially if you don’t have the supplies to render them unconscious until they pass.
While I was over there a British girl working in Egypt had a stray dog lick a scratch on her leg from under a table in the market. She didn’t think anything of it but that was all it took.
