Dug my old S&W Model 13 out of the safe for a too long delayed range trip. I carried this gun for years, till about eight years ago when I switched to carrying Glocks.

Such a sweet shooting handgun. Double action like butter. The K-Frame in this FBI configuration (three inch bull barrel, and round butt frame) just hits the sweet spot in terms of being large enough to shoot well, but lightweight and compact enough to be a great daily carry choice.

This one was made shortly after they stopped doing the pinned and recessed thing, but it's still from the time when all the metal was forged steel, the firing pins were affixed to the hammer (where God meant them to be), blueing/polishing was still done right, and barrels weren't two-piece sleeved affairs. In those days, large police and Federal agencies depended on these guns being made right, so they were.

This is a two and three-quarter inch ten yard group, fired double action.

It's true what they say, once you learn double action (which I did back in the early 1980s), it's like riding a bike. No matter how many years go by, you can still pick one up and shoot it at least competently.

Weren't these also made in .44, or was that a different model?

That was the Charter Arms Bulldog, neat guns, but a handful even with mild factory loads. They were/are 19oz. of handful, at that.

Nice!

S&W also made a 3-inch version in 44 Spcl, believe that would be the 696, which was an L frame, or the 24/624-3, which would be an N frame......put some Culina combat grips on them, and they make for an awesome carry gun.

That must've been it. I only remember that it was a limited short term S&W 3" snub .44. That was my favorite revolver I ever shot. A friend let me trade when we went to the range. Surprised how concealable and ergonomic it was. It was the smaller L frame then. It was the same as the.357

That's super light.
I think Timz guessed it because I remember it being a Smith. Extremely nice finish and details.
That Bulldog sounds like a good trail gun.
I would like a LW 1911 or something like that for a trail gun when out mowing or hiking.

I always thought the model 13 was a very good idea. I especially like your 3โ€ model round butt model.

Nice gun and nice shooting. I do love my wheel guns too!

Yep. She did. First she fired a round to light up the area (it was pitch black in the room after BB shut the power off), and then she used that flash image to aim her second shot.

Replaced the model 27 3 1/2" model for the Feebs.

That was the 58, an N framed M&P

Glad y'all mentioned the FBI gun thing!

Not many even know that. wink

Cool handgun, RH!
Hawk, you've got some cool guns in your safe(s).

Very nice. Good shooting.

Replaced by the 10mm Smith and Wesson.
Posted By: TheKid Re: S&W Old School Cool - 02/24/21
What year was your 13 made? I donโ€™t have a 13 but I do have a 65, a 10-5 snub and a 15-3 snub, a K frame action is hard not to love.

Another lesser known fact is that the original M13s were M10s. They were built on contract for a highway patrol agency and while they used properly stamped barrels and probably M19 cylinders, they for some reason used frames that were on hand that had already been stamped M10. Pretty certain it was the Oklahoma Highway Patrol who requested and received those first guns.

I've owned a couple of S&W 696s, but I found that I liked the Rossi 720s and Taurus 431s better. I thought that the Model 696 would have been a better platform is it had been built on a K-frame, basically a 5-shot .44 Special version of the Models 19 and 66.

My favorite .44 Special is the S&W 329PD, but second place would be a 4" stainless Taurus 441.

IIRC that's the model. The FBI may have had a special designation, but I think that's the exact one.

The model I had was the 1006. Best 10mm I've ever owned, and I've owned a bunch.

At the time that's what everyone else was saying too.
The delta elite had a lot of cracked frames on the used market. The Bren was collectable, but not something you'd want to use as a range gun.

That's a man's gun for sure. It's hard to find bad reports on that model. Glad it served you well.
The feds said that round was too much too handle with all the training and ammo available even to them after all the hoopla over the Miami shooting.
Never cared for the compromise round.

The K-frame 3" round butt guns have a cult like following for a reason. They are fantastic concealed carry fighting guns. Sorta the Glock 19 of revolvers.

My first 10mm was a Delta Elite. I've owned two Glock 20's, two Wyoming Arms "Parker's", an IAI (AMT) Javalina, and maybe some I'm forgetting. I was never interested in a 40 either until I ended up with one, but IMO it is a good cartridge. During the previous ammo shortage no common fighting handgun rounds were available much except the 40 S&W, which was in good supply, for some reason.

Even an AMT. Thats a full collection alright .
I respect that glock. I think that was Gaston's favorite too. Nice thing about the 10 is the versatility for hunting deer and pig if you want.

Those are just ones I've had over the years. I'm currently 10less without even that Glock. I wouldn't mind trying out a Rock Island...possibly a double stack.

I still have one, or rather my Daughter does now!

Bought her a Ruger LCR in .357 Mag, after she got her carry permit. (She carries .38 special) Got tired of lugging the gun from car to house and asked me for a second gun,

Little bitch got my S&W 28 for a house weapon. Mine/hers is recessed and pinned as well. I gave it to her so the ammo would interchange. Not comfortable with her caring a semi-auto at this point, lack of experience.

Is that an eight inch? Also, looks like a dash three rather than a dash two. No barrel pin.

Seems the 3" K-frames have gained cult status. I like my old 10-8. Here it is in LAPD mode (DAO), when it was my off-duty gun. Great revolver. Might have to take it out tomorrow for a spin.

Nice revolver you have there, Hawkeye. What load where you shooting? Whatever it was it was shooting well and at point of aim. I like K frames too. They just feel right to me.

Thanks. Those rounds were Blazer 158 grain lead round nose (I have most of a case of them). Not a weak load, for .38 Special, either. Reproduces the feel of defensive ammo.

I've got a snubby 66, too, along with a snubby 19 (Combat Magnum). Classic S&W revolvers are fun to collect.
