Recently my data usage skyrocketed. Before March 26 I'd download maybe 4 to 8 GB per day, a high usage day might be 12 GB. On March 27 that jumped to 20, even up to 30 or more GB per day. I've exceeded my ISP data usage limit for the first time ever, that goes back mucho years.

I've tweaked Firefox browser settings and done what I could on general network and privacy settings but what I'm seeing is that if I open Firefox and leave it alone, the network only downloads a few dozen individual bytes every few seconds. But if I open 24hcf, my data download usage jumps to a bunch of MB every few seconds. That's even letting it sit on one page, basically not downloading anything new.

All websites show a small increase in data usage as you first load them but then once the content is loaded that stabilizes, but the fire just sends and sends data no matter if I'm actively opening topics or just letting it sit. Data usage increased some .3 GB in the time it's taken to type this.

So my question is - anybody else seeing this? I have adblocker going and it blocks anywhere from 7 to 20 odd ads per page but once they're blocked that data flow should cease.

The normal Windows monitoring tools just show that data is being downloaded but they don't get more specific than the processes in task manager. For whatever reason 24hcf is just talking up a storm to somebody and downloading data right and left. Anybody know of any on line tools that might pinpoint what exactly is being downloaded?

Update - as I was just typing this, not sending or receiving anything (that I know of) my data usage increased .5 GB, that's with nothing going except the keyboard. Gotta have my fire fix but if Rick put something on here around 3/27 that's downloading tons of crap I need to know about that and find a way to block it.

Simple: STOP USING YOUR PHONE AS A COMPUTER!

(Yes, I meant to shout.)
In some places some of us have to use our phones as hotspots. I didn't even have to shout.

THANK YOU BUT I'M NOT USING MY PHONE, ALL OF MY INTERNET BROWSING IS DONE FROM A DESKTOP. I NEVER USE MY CELL PHONE FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN A PHONE, VERY OCCASIONAL TEXTS AND OCCASIONALLY A CALCULATOR. wink

After posting this I sat on the thinking throne to download a few things of my own and the process became a little clearer. It is the damn constant bombardment of ads from this place, they don't stop. I'm watching the Ad Blocker icon and the count of ads blocked doesn't hit a point and stop, it just keeps going up and even with Ad Blocker they still count as data downloaded.

Firefox and Ad Blocker are running locally on my PC but they don't have a way to reach out anywhere and say "don't send that". This site sends an ad and it goes through the ISP to this computer where Ad Blocker intercepts it and doesn't display it, but the damage is done - that data counts toward my monthly usage.

In the past I remember seeing that 8 or maybe 10 ads would be blocked on each new page but now it's 29 or more, that count keeps going up and up - it's now at 30. I retired on March 26th and my fire viewing has gone up, plus I tend to just leave it on. That has to be what killed me - I figured that since it was sitting idle nothing was being downloaded except the normal miniscule amount of back and forth network traffic you'd see anywhere. But just sitting here it was downloading MB after MB of stupid, stinking ads (up to 32 now).

Nothing to do about this - it's Rick's site and the more ads the site sends the more money he rakes in hand over fist. I guess the only thing to do is limit campfire viewing or turn it on, check stuff and close it asap.

Weird. On this page of your thread, uBlock Origin is showing 6 things blocked on PC and 9 on phone. And not going up.
Why would the usage go up in March? those %^&^%$# ads have been here long before that.
The NSA is monitoring you...... wink
I have not done a data download count but it seems to me that my data usage is up on both my phone and laptop. Without any facts I blame it on ads and stuff that continues to run invisibly in the background. I have unlimited data (crock of BS) but my speed is reduced at 15 Gig usage per month. No change in usage pattern but I am running out earlier each month
Racket first class

My understanding is that is how the blocker works. It does not stop the ad from the server, it only stops it from displaying.
FWIW
blocking 26 right now.

Completely agree, for whatever reason (and I've dealt with the ridiculous video ads, etc.) this site has been killing our sat. bandwidth. Until we finally get Starlink, I'll be more cautious about hanging around here too long. It's gotten insane with the draw.
Kills my ipad battery pretty fast also

I had a spike until I got the videos blocked with APB.
I only have my phone to use for internet. Verizon service using it as a hot spot for my laptop.
Have never had a problem with excess data usage.
I use adblock + , Ghostery, and ulead

I never get adds (pop-ups) on 24 Hour Campfire.com, that said I have an unlimited data plan.
I'm watching my blocker counter at the top. In the time its taken me to read this page of threads, its blocked 5 popups, and I have no other browser tabs open.

Hitting refresh it immediately blocks 10 ads of various types , then the count continues up slowly from there blocking an additional one every 20-30 seconds.

No kidding. But the campfire isn't worth the time anymore for the most part. Rick let it go to hell. His call. Could care less. Its a POS place anymore. Just like when shooters.com went down the tubes...
Apologies to those unfortunate enough to be forced to use a phone hotspot.

I never see ads or popups anywhere, even here, using uBlock Origin and Firefox on Linux Mint. uBO tells me it is blocking 6 ads right now, the same as usual. I don't track my download numbers; connect via Comcast cable.

I think the point is that some internet home plans besides phone hotspots also limit usage so the bandwidth for the site is going to factor in regardless.
Yep. I have a basic internet service through the local cable company that comes with 350 GB of data per month. I've been on this plan for at least 15 years and have never used even 75% of that data - ever. This period, 3/15 through 4/14, was the first time I've ever exceeded that data and my total data usage jumped to some 430 GB although my time on line and on the fire hasn't changed significantly at all. And the majority of that data usage was from 3/27 through 4/14.

So, what changed around here on March 27th?
Make sure to close out the classy conversations post tab when your done...all those pics will use up some data if you keep it open.
Where do you go to check your data usage per month from your ISP, and check how much 24hr is using while you sit on this page you guys are talking about?

Thanks
