A sovereign nation is always free to simply declare that it will no longer consider itself liable for the debt, since it was fraudulent to begin with. You cannot legitimately owe anything to a counterfeiter who handed you lots of counterfeit money on the promise that you'd pay it back with interest by taxing the US population. It's a fraud. Fraudulent contracts are unenforceable in law.
