There is no shortage, but my little gig doing barn repairs, mostly foundations, stone, etc. is coming to an end as prices are killing me and I do not charge farmers much for my services to begin with. Concrete, lumber, rebar prices are all going up as is fuel and food and these folks do not wish to pay anymore than I charge , I have not raised my hourly rate in 15 years .

trying to find a buyer for land just timbered. No mills are taking timber now because they advised running at around 30% capacity due to lack of employees
Posted By: flintlocke Re: why is lumber high? - 05/26/21
In my area, there are a lot of reasons western softwood lumber is crazy high right now, one is inventory is down mainly because western mills told their employees last year...if you aren't comfortable coming to work during covid...just stay home, your job will be here when you come back. Well, they stayed home and after 6 weeks were able to draw unemployment with bonuses, so worker shortage, no inventory from eastern weather events, Canadians also reduced production from covid. Until the unemployment bonuses go away, don't look for increased production. Raw log prices, surprisingly, are at record lows...too many salvage logs from endless fires last few summers. It's going to take a while for the market to stabilize.
And then there is Canada...the Canadians subsidize the hell out of their softwood industry (socialism) and by NAFTA and USMCA dump their products down here at prices that free enterprise cannot compete with. They are literally giving away Crown timber...US producers have to bid on our timber at full market value, who can compete against free raw materials? Our industry if given a level playing field would expand and easily meet our demand, but until the Canadian dumping is stopped our industry cannot expand...there just isn't enough profit incentive when you have to compete against a rigged game. You may ask, how did we sign that trade deal. Bill Clinton traded favors for the Detroit Auto Unions, to limit Canadian auto parts and autos for the unions, and in return said sure, Canada, we'll let your lumber in with only a token tiny tariff. The Democrat Party at work. Every place where there are unstable markets, agriculture, lumber, metals, petroleum, drill down, you will see the finger of the US Govt, screwing up free markets since 1780.

US sawmill production as a per cent of practical capacity for January 2021 improved to 91% from 87% in the same month last year, said the Western Wood Products Association’s monthly Lumber Track.

Here is Louisiana there has been high demand due to the hurricanes last year and the ice storm. Lots of timber company land here locally and mills. The mills haven't been able to keep up with the demand, not because of staff, because of natural disasters.

There are 4 logging contractors cutting timber within 5 miles of my house now. They have been working 7 days a week for 3 weeks even tho its been raining almost everyday. Timber companies normally shut down the loggers when its really wet.

Timber company man told me they the company is making epic profits right now, he said they are buying at prices of 10 years ago. So the timber companies ( not the loggers) and retail sales are making a killing right now while the people trying to rebuild from the storms are paying the price.

Probably can't get past the drug test! I interviewed 36 people, to fill five positions, in 2012! Only for passed the pre employment drug screen! All but two failed with thc in their system. The other two failed pot and meth! Finally recruited within the company! In 2012 the wage of $28.50 an hour plus, insurance, paid vacation, and 10% of earnings paid by the employer, to retirement, wasn't enough to stop smoking pot! WTF! This was in the lumber industry of southern oregon!

The mills are NOT going to add capacity that will stand idle any more than ammo makers. The normal size and demand of the market is pretty well established and it would be coconuts to turn on a bunch of shiny metal the week everything caves.

Never mind that prices on the stump (to get the wood to the mill) are pretty much flat. Nobody's offering more to the loggers and truckers and landowners, I know this first hand on one side and secondhand on the others.

As for jobs, the wood products industry in much of the West has been, and still is, under unrelenting assault, both political and legal, from the professional Green stopniks. Even if there's jobs, how long might they last? Nobody can answer that question with any clarity. I think that long-term risk is a big deal. Who wants to work in the restaurant business now, and what happens if there's another COVID thing? Who goes first? Why go into trucking with self-driving coming fast? Why work in a factory if there's robots being ordered?

COVID shattered the mold for a lot of business models. There's already crazy risk out there, so given the choice between taking risk, and taking profit, what would YOU do?

That should begin to improve. Unemployment has paid the equivalent of $40 per hour for over a year. Even ethical types have a hard time giving that up for half, or less. That may not sound like much money in some places, but it is in most of the places where things (like boards) are actually made.

Anyone read the article?

The asshatfrom the logging council said,
"Tariffs don't raise prices, supply and demand do."

WTF!
I hate being played, lied to by some Mf'er who thinks I'm dumb enough
to not smell the schitz he is spreading!

If tariffs don't raise prices, then why the hell does the Lumber Council
support the tariffs. Ho-Li-Puck do statements like that frost my nuts.
And the so called reporter is too stupid (or in the bag) to catch it?

The whole point is to raise Canadian prices so domestic producers
can either raise prices or sell volume at already higher prices.

And yes, I actually would normally support tariffs on the subsidized
dumping that hurts our producers. (Of anything)

But this deal here is the same type stuff as oil.
Not to start that fight, but this issues is causing damage to
a lot of our people.
If imported lumber can stabilize prices and
keep things moving, leave the tariffs low. Obviously, they aren't
producing enough to change prices by supply. This only increases
price directly, by adding cost.

The Dems were smart when they continued the "enhanced unemployment". It puts all employers in the situation that you mentioned. Therefore, it's another way to raise the minimum wage. It also motivates employers to urge for more immigration.

The mills in our area are long term survivors. If they pay more for new employees, they have to increase the wage scale for all employees. Then when the market turns, the new employees are laid off, with the employer paying unemployment benefits and they are yet left with the higher cost structure of having to pay more for their existing employees. So everyone sits tight.

Apologies if this is has already been mentioned.

Current timber prices could be our new normal, at least for the next few years. The industry hasn’t had a true increase in 20 years.

Sure, there’s been some price flexing in both directions based on state side and overseas needs, but nothing that was considered a trued up price increase until now.

I live in timber country. I have several mills a few miles from my door stuffed with timber. A dude would think my price point would be lower based on proximity to the product. Hell No!

I’m spending a quarter mil in just lumber costs for two projects that are underway in the next few months. 2 years ago $125k would have gotten both done.

My rape whistle is broken from over use.

The main purpose of thinning is to improve the growing conditions for the residual stand. If your stand needs thinning, it may be best to have it done even at a low price. It's pulpwood, it's not going to go but so high. If you do nothing, it will slowly thin itself. Trees will die and you'll get nothing for them, and the rest of the stand is more susceptible to insect attacks. Plus there's a lot of wood on the ground to fuel a fire if one gets started, although I realize that's not the same level of risk that they have out west.
Posted By: There_Ya_Go Re: why is lumber high? - 05/27/21

Here's my post from another similar thread a short while back:

"I am a forestry consultant to small landowners. Have gotten numerous calls from clients who have seen or heard about the lumber prices and wonder if it's a good time to sell timber.

Supply and demand are different in the lumber and timber markets. Can't speak to other regions of the country but in the Southeast there is a plentiful supply of timber relative to the mill capacity, for two reasons.

One, the closing down of many smaller sawmills over the years. In the 40-odd (and I do mean odd, lol) years I've been a forester, there's been a bunch of sawmills to go out of business; their production costs were just too high to compete with modern high-volume sawmills. So with fewer, albeit high volume, mills out there, any changes in the supply-demand equation have much larger repercussions than if there were more numerous sources of lumber to be had; therefore, as demand for lumber has spiked in conjunction with COVID limiting output plus other factors, higher prices for wood products are the result. In many areas, the housing market is hot for reasons that have been well documented, so even if the mills' output had not been compromised by COVID, we would have seen lumber prices go up. The good news is that more mill capacity is being added and should help bring things into a better equilibrium over the next several years. Also, I personally don't see how the housing market can stay like it is forever.

The second factor is the more intense forest management that has been evolving over the years and really decades. Shorter rotations coupled with higher yields has increased the supply of timber tremendously, even with land bases shrinking due largely to urban-suburban sprawl. (The resulting decline in wood quality is a whole 'nother story.) So, the lumber "shortage" is not due to a shortage of timber; stumpage prices have in fact been rising, but only very gradually; nothing like lumber. In fact, stumpage prices are not even back to where they were before the financial crisis of 2008.

Again, I'm only speaking of the US Southeast and I'm sure there are other factors involved that I either don't know about or have not thought of at the moment. I don't know what's going on with the Canadian lumber business or in the US Northwest, but I suspect something similar."
