That is the sport of mounted cowboy action shooting.
They shoot a coarse black powder blank that burns in a conical pattern out a certain distance, popping the balloon (hopefully) yet remains safe for the bystanders and spectators in the distance. Powerful and dangerous up close but safe at 50 feet or so.
Hoooolyyyyyh crap, can she ride or what????? Bet she could show the boys a thing or two!!! It would be fun to be there when some jock challenges her in a few years. It would be hard to keep a straight face??? Bill. 👣🐾👣🐾🇨🇦
The tan chaps that Ms Kimber is wearing are the some of the nicest chaps I have seen in years. They are made of elk hide. They were a gift from Rockinnbbar to little miss Kimber, and she loves them. When she wears chaps at a show, these are the ones she wears now.
Here she is at the world shoot in Texas in 2020:
She also had her picture wearing those chaps (along with a bunch of other Idaho cowgirls) in a music video called "American Girls" by a band based out of Austin Texas that was founded in the little town of Stanley Idaho called Reckless Kelly. A Grammy winning group of Idaho mountain boys.

Those are great pictures. Looks like lot of fun that took a lot of work to get to. That's an accomplishment both child and parent should be proud of! Ill bet the horses ears are ringing for a week after a round or two of that.
Fine thread indeed. Back around 1960 one of the neighbor girls did the rodeo thing...blew my little mind to see her doing figure 8s around the barrels.
WOW This is flat out the best thread I have ever seen on this forum Haven’t been on here much lately due to all the political bullshit and was about to give it away completely but this has restored my faith
Reckless Kelly. Cody Canada, and The Motor Cars all do a big annual show right down the road from my cabin every year. The big Braun Brothers Reunion. One of them actually films the "Music From the Mountain" series from his yurt/cabin, which is a few minutes from my place. I have been going to the shows and seeing the guys when they come home to visit family for a long time. Lots of times they used to do small gigs at a place like the Catholic Church in Twin Falls or at the Mountain Village in Stanley.
How the heck do you get a horse accustomed to a .45 going off in his ear?
Training.
That and the horses actually wear custom made earplugs!
Some horses take to it. Others don't. Had one I just couldn't get a smooth finish on. He'd hear my revolver cock and act up. Sometimes he was good, sometimes he wasn't.
My faithful old yellow horse LOVED it. He lived to do mounted shooting.
Had a hunting outfitter friend and he said a client asked him if you could shoot off his horses while hunting?
My friend told him "Sure! You can shoot off of any horse.... Once."
I graduated with a girl that is still doing the mounted shooting at age 51 down in OK.
I still recall, while we were in school, she had a deaf horse that her brother would take deer hunting. He would lay the barrel on top of the horses head as a rest. lol
What's the story behind this pic? Just the obvious or something else?
New horse she was working on.
Had a tendency to get a bit rowdy. She had been pitched already a week or so earlier and had her shooting arm in a brace, so she was basicly riding and shooting one handed/ with a limited range of motion.
She couldn't extend her arm all the way, so she was doing a lot of low, point shooting.
Her horse got amped up and decided to pitch her. She apparently said some un-lady like words for an 18 year old directed at her horse, got back on and rode her horse down.
When you get hurt, if you are able, you get back on and you suck it up and ride.
In this pic, I had explained to her on the way to that show that lots of times when I was rodeoing I would get injured, and that getting injured is just part of the sport. Well a short time later, she came in way too hot on a horse that was much to powerful for her. The horse stopped fast and she went flying right into some metal panels. We iced her up, switched her saddle onto another horse and she ended up being the top kid at the shoot in spite of the fact that she couldn't really walk.
We didn't tell her mom about the wreck until well after the shoot was over.

Man, this is great stuff! Not a horse person, not a cattle person, not a rodeo person.....but, if I knew of a one of these shooting competitions near me, I'd go in a heartbeat! Y'all are raising those young'uns right!

Mackey,
That’s cool.
Bucket list for me to see that show. See muzzy and the boys play. Not to mention all the others come to play the Braun Brothers Fest.
You now how stories go. Was at a bar drinking beer and eating a steak. Started talking to dude beside me. Just BS’ing.
He was down from ID visiting his daughter at college. She was interning at the local zoo. He was gonna trim the hooves on the zebras while there. He was a farrier. And an outfitter during hunting season.
Any way. Said he knew the Braun’s and shod horses for them.
Reckless Kelly is a great band and worth seeing. My sister is friends with some of them and even went to Ireland with them a couple years ago.
The picture of those young ladies on horseback are fantastic. Way to raise them right. Been to quite a few rodeos but never to one of those shooting events. I’m going to have to find one and go see it.
My daughter started her own business while she was still in high school. She now owns her own ranch where she breeds and trains barrel racing horses. She also competes and trains riders. She just turned 50 the other day. Here she is just after the final barrel and making the fast trip home. Note that the instants this picture was taken her horse is literally flying, not one hoof touching the ground. Doc
