Id say outstanding. You both are blessed. He must have been tough.

My WW2 uncle got his last one at age 93 before the VA let him lay in the hospital 3 days puking blood from a bleeding ulcer and no IV until his kidneys died from dehydration.
Congrats!

Agree, although most of us will not be above ground at that age. Treasure my buddy across the street, 98 year old P-47 pilot, flew The Bulge. God bless the Greatest Generation! Sad that there are so few left.

My hat off to your dad and you! Those are the deer that the are real trophies (IMO).

Between your dad smoking a stogie while watching you work and now his opening day buck I’d say that your dad is living life in style. I hope you have many more opening day hunts with your dad.
Posted By: TrueGrit Re: Dad's opening day buck. - 10/16/21
Thanks everyone. My grandma had to pick up his highschool diploma because he joined the Navy and headed overseas at 17, spent Christmas day in Shanghai. It's hard to see him get old but he always says that it beats the alternative. For those who asked, he shoots a Browning 300 win mag and 180gr Nosler ballistic tips.

Loved helping Pop load and dress his deer. He would have Mother call and say he needed a little help, was I in town?

Got him a little Jap 4X4 truck out of a Distribution Center I built for Macy's, the rack people used them to haul pieces inside, put 4 wheeler tires on it, it would climb trees. This is him at 85, showing off his camo job:
[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]
Built a slide board, strung him up a 4 part line so he could drag 'em up by himself. Drove rebar and hung fence panels and trained honeysuckle in a few spots and he could just pull up and sit and watch the crossings, stay dry and warm and have his coffee and dump 10-12 does every year, the occasional good buck. He would make 3-400 lbs of deer sausage every year till Mom passed away. Took his last deer when he was 89.

He was an opportunist, he was working in the garden when a flock of geese came over, he ran to the truck and got his Browning out and stood in the flower bed waiting, they got overhead and he dropped one, that fell through the picture window in the living room. $400 goose.

Good on your Dad and you for helping him stay out and after it!

Ditto. I'm taking down the last bee hive today with my 81 year old father, and hope that he can continue to get after it for a long while yet. It always is good to read stories like these written here.

That's awesome brother. My dad is still getting it done at 89 last fall. I wasn't there in Nova Scotia covid had everything closed. Going through the process now to get there on the 27th now. Season starts on the 29th. Been hunting together for about 50 years now almost every season.

Good luck and shoot straight y'all
