Our 2006 F150 crankcase filter is a bear to get off.
I looked at a K&N yesterday that did not have a nut.
Any brands that do?
So, what you've got is an Almond Joy and you're looking for a Mounds.
I feel like a nut!
Hand tighten, hand loosen.
Hand tighten, hand loosen.
Plus 1
Napa lists the K&N with the nut.
5.4 liter ?
Hand tighten, hand loosen.
Yes, this !
& always check that the old gasket is still attached to the filter you remove !

Yes Paul, the K&N I looked yesterday had no nut.
I am surprised as the K&N's I use have nuts.

Myself as well Ed.
This works on any size spin-on filter- - - - -oil, fuel, coolant, etc. It takes a 3/4" open end wrench or a 1/2" square drive ratchet or breaker bar. I use one to change the canister type water filters we use at home. Can't get a link to post- - - -copy and paste.

I've spent a lot of money on tools to remove that filter!
I exclusively use K&N filters and the Performance Wrench Off filter has the "nut".

This^^^ has always been my last final resort when all else failed.
O rings some time melt on and can be a PITA to remove. I hand tighten, but usually need a wrench to remove.
I have end cap oil filter wrenches for all the oil filters I change. Makes it real easy to install and remove oil filters using a 1/2" ratchet.
Like this one:

"O rings some time melt on and can be a PITA to remove"
In my 62 years of changing oil filters I have never had an oil filter gasket melt.
Most likely installed too tightly from the get go
Spin on filters always go hand tight as ^ ^ posted ^ ^
previously
I always do an extra 1/4 turn or so, but never any more.
The only times I've ever had trouble removing a filter
was when I didn't have time to do my own work, and
some pinhead did it. Same with wheel lug nuts.
As said ^ ^ always always check for the gasket to
stay with the filter, and check the mounting surface
for any debris. I always wipe it with a clean rag and
feel of it with bare fingers to make sure it's bare
clean metal. THIN coat of oil on the new gasket.

Nope, but if they're over tightened, as they tend to be with a wrench, often, the o-ring becomes dislodged from its track & stays attached to the filter housing.
You'd be amazed at the number of oil leaks, we've fixed, that ended up being double gasketed filters !
Drive a fuggin screwdriver into it and pull on like like a man

If your oil is getting hot enough to melt an oil filter O ring, you got bigger problems than a nut or not on the can...
A big YEP on double O rings. The quick change oil monkeys do it all the time or forget to torque the pan plug.
K&N HP series is a male......has a nut...usually $15 lately
K&N PS series is female......w/o nut..usually $7-8
The nut can be really handy...yea like the 3.4L V6 Tacoma...PIA to change filter
Remember too...nut is for loosening only....not for tightening

Those work great...... until the strap gets saturated with oil the first time out.
I've spent a lot of money on tools to remove that filter!

I've watched my dad do that quite a few times. I've been lucky and haven't ever needed to but he gave me the learning on it
I wouldn't worry about it... or even bother changing the oil... or pretty much anything.
Spark plugs, coils, tranny... will be blowing up on ya before long.
No hard feelings, but that era Ford is infamous for a laundry list of stuff going bad...
I personally know of THREE down at the moment.
Remember the old Henry Ford quote... "Sell them cheap, but kill them on the parts."
Hand tighten, hand loosen.
Yep. Those sharp-toothed oil filter pliers can lend a hand too. I've used them in the past for all sorts of things you can't get a good grip on.
With all the issues with the cam phasers on those 5.4's, I'm not using anything but Motocraft oil and filters. Those nut jobs are pricey and I'm a big proponent of getting rid of the oil, filter and dirt early. Sears marketed a wrench head that fit a 3/8" drive socket wrench that had three steel fingers that cammed tighter into the filter the harder you turned it. Way cleaner than the screwdriver trick and a tight filter never beat me using that tool.
Here you go Wabi get a pair of these bad boys. Regular water pumps beside it just for size reference.

+1. The ultimate last resort!

For sure. I've done this myself and felt like a dumba$$ for not realizing it until too late! No pain, no gain, though right?
the real question wabi ?
do you change the crush washer every oil change ?
I'll keep looking for a K&N with a nut.

did U call jeff bezos ?
Wix XP is prob a better filter

Was it that hard for you to twist off or was it a access issue ???
I've never gotten it off, I've had to Jake, or son in law do it!
or you can just take it somewhere that can change the oil for you.
I learned a long time ago that time spent crawling around under beat up cars and trucks is better paid to someone that is cut out for that kind of work.
Don't get me wrong, my daddy taught me how to do all that. we changed every fluid, every hose, belt, plug in all the vehicles. probably where I learned that one day I'm paying someone to do that. It's like picking up trash on the highway- needs to be done but I ain't doing it.
I have a 2007 F-150. All I use is the OEM Motorcraft filters and an endcap filter wrench with a 3/8” breaker bar or wrench with extension. Mine is 4wd, so I don’t even need a jack, just lay an old shower curtain down to catch any spillage on the driveway and slide right under. Super simple.
Just be ready, because there is a plastic ramp under the filter that is supposed to direct the oil dripping from the filter to drain forward. Most of the time, it goes over the back of the ramp and down onto the skid plate. I just lay a couple of shop towels to catch any leakage and I’m good.
Once in my life I've encountered the double gasket issue, on a girlfriend's vehicle that I was changing oil. I had not changed it the previous time. It was a bear (and she ended up being a bee-atch) and I drove a screwdriver through it.
I don't do all of my automotive repairs anymore, but I insist on changing my own oil. I want to know what I'm getting and that it's done right.
Just hold on to it Wabbi............
I've spent a lot of money on tools to remove that filter!

I've done this before, but never had to on one I put on myself.
Hand tighten, hand loosen.
Yep. Those sharp-toothed oil filter pliers can lend a hand too. I've used them in the past for all sorts of things you can't get a good grip on.
Got to go along with the oil filter pilers also. Any size filter, no digging around for different fittings for your socket wrench/rachet, no different filter caps...
No messy screwdriver. 1 filter pliers and you are done, all sizes big & small.
Here you go Wabi get a pair of these bad boys. Regular water pumps beside it just for size reference.

Yeah, but they’re just Alligators. If he was something he’d have Cobras in the pic.

I did all my own automotive work for years. You couldn't pay me to do that stuff today.
I’ll never buy an oil filter for a Harley without a nut on it. Get that chrome covered with oil, and you ain’t getting a grip on it with anything!
I have broken filter wrenches trying to get the one off my 93 Cummins.
They must vibrate tight, because I only lightly hand tighten them.
The only way to get them off is the huge channel locks.
I've spent a lot of money on tools to remove that filter!
Drive a screwdriver through it and turn.
Until you tear the filter in half, then you have a real mess.
I’ll never buy an oil filter for a Harley without a nut on it!
Wait'll that nut breaks off... BTDT...
Filter must have been put on “farmer tight”!
I can pull my truck into my shop and have oil changed in less than 20 min tops. While drinking a couple beers. No way I’d set in a waiting room for an hour, pay someone to do something I can do myself and then wonder if they fugked something up.
Never been scared of dirt OR work though. YMMV.
Use Napa gold or Baldwin normally. Used the k&n with a nut once, pretty handy.
My honda filter always seems to tighten over time. Hand tight on, big channel locks to get it off.
There have been many but I remember two semi recent oil filter battles.
First ever oil change on a new Polaris Ranger, factory installed filter was Mexican farmer tight and if I remember correctly in an awkward place. Can't remember only change the oil every other year or so...
Second was a used JD tractor with a dealer installed filter. Way too fricken tight, luckily it is really easy to get at.
My honda filter always seems to tighten over time. Hand tight on, big channel locks to get it off.
what he said
Channel locks
Good Night folks. I need my beauty sleep.
Just clarifying, hand tight doesn’t mean both hands..
My nephew uses those oil filters

The one that shot his pecker off pheasant hunting?
Lol

I suffer outside on the gravel.
Throw down a piece of cardboard and slide under.
But I don't mess with my mom's or wife's vehicles.
They go to the Ford garage.
Hate changing oil on that kind of stuff. F350's are way easier.
I have never seen one of those.
Put a lift in your garage. How old guys change their oil - none of that crawling on your back stuff. Have Fumoto valves and cup wrenches that fit each filter. Fit them hand tight, not gorilla tight. Easy Peasy.
I have never seen one of those.
I had a bit of trouble on occasion until I got one of those strap wrenches.
Napa gold for the win and a strap wrench.
I've spent a lot of money on tools to remove that filter!
Drive a screwdriver through it and turn.

AGREED!!!! BTDT - had to throw away the tee shirt (was too oily to wash!)

Good grief. If you get to this point things are already [bleep] up. You don’t start here. Problem solving 101.
No, but you went from needing to change the oil, and having an issue,
to having a disabled car.
BTDT.
Never knew a oil filter that could survive a large channel lock pliers
I've spent a lot of money on tools to remove that filter!
Drive a screwdriver through it and turn.
This^^^ has always been my last final resort when all else failed.
yeah, and I have had times, when I did that long ago.... and I ended up with the bottom half of the filter completely torn off and the upper half still welded to the part you spun it onto the engine block.... those when I used cheap K Mart filters... when I was a dumb poor college student, working idiot jobs for minimum wages.
That I started using Hastings filters, which had the 1/2 inch nut of them....and that ended that problem...that was back in the 1980s...
I've spent a lot of money on tools to remove that filter!
Are you oiling the gasket real good before spinning it on?
Hand tighten then add 1/4 turn?
Filter must have been put on “farmer tight”!
My Dad taught me to do it that way. After contact, tighten as much as humanly possible with both hands while gritting teeth and then get a rag so you can get a better grip and see if you can tighten some more. Yeah, I always had to get an oil filter wrench to get them off. I can only assume that he must have had an oil leak from the filter at some point in his life.
I was a way grown man before I knew that was wrong/unnecessary.
I use either of these types.
I tried the K&N once with the built in nut and it didn't seal without some torque. The nut is also large. Think I needed a 1" box end wrench.
No K and N anything for me.
I use either of these types.
Those plyers won't work on any of the vehicles I own. Not enough room to get them on the filter.
I had not seen those before. Gotta be easier than the traditional type loop wrenches. Something always in the way,.
We have most all of those. It's awkward as all getout.
No K and N anything for me.
I was wondering if anyone knew they were junk.
The surgery required to change oil filter on my Yamaha 350 outboard exceeds any automobile that I've run across. What a bugger.
I know Fram is schit, but I give them credit for putting that black textured stuff on the oil filter so you can get a grip on with your hand
I have the oil filter wrench with the teeth. Doesn't work well on the acura where I have to go thru the wheel well to get to the filter.
No K and N anything for me.
Problems or just the horror stories?
No K and N anything for me.
I was wondering if anyone knew they were junk.
Back when I was in my 20's I had two different mechanics say the same thing about K&N Air Filters "They catch everything larger than a brick!".
Whether K&N is actually bad or not, I've stayed away from anything they make since.
That’s what she said.
C’mon, man! I can do this all day!!
K&N air filters are junk but the oil filters are as good as the next one
