Anyone here do mountain climbing? My son works on wind towers and I want to get him some carabiners. Need help with which are the good brands and where to find them. Thanks

No, power to anyone that does.

I did a long time ago, injury took me out of the sport. Still have my gear. The carabiner are made by Chouinard. Rated for 2100kg. Not sure if they are still around.

I was a dirt bag climber for 10 years. First 3 years a lot of big wall. Year 5 free water open. I liked living so I gave that up quick

Last 5 or so strictly bouldering and competitively. ( no ropes or gear and under 35 ft) injuries ended all of it. Free climbing has risks

Stick with a big name. I always used petzl and black diamond.
Won’t go wrong with them. High quality gear. When your life depends on the gear, you don’t cut corners

Back in high school and college I was super into rock climbing. I’d spend almost every weekend at Joshua Tree, or Tahquitz rock in Southern California. Every year I’d go up to Yosemite and do a big wall. Halfdome, El Capitan, Sentinel, Royal Arches, Boot Flake, Thank God Ledge, the Zigzag Cracks, El Cap Tower, the Headwall, The Spire, Long Ledge. Super awesome stuff. But then, I decided that I should finally become an adult, and went to graduate school. That ended my climbing career.

The technology has changed many times over since I got out of the sport. I wouldn’t be able to make any equipment recommendations.

My rack has mostly Black Diamond.

Petzl and Metolius are good, too.

Don't trust off-brand offerings.

REI is anti-gun and anti-hunting and anti most things we care about. I used to do business with them before they came out.

I don't climb mountains if there aren't any sheep or goats (including ibex) on them.

Pretty sure beaver10 does, only he is lunatic enough to do it with a rifle instead of climbing gear.

If it's safety gear then he should only use what he is issued by his employer. If he's self employed then he probably knows what he needs.

Sorry for the lack of help but there are different carabiners for different purposes. It would be a total guess on our part if he needed a large locking
carabiner for a harness or a small regular ones for attaching ropes to anchors.

Something like that, I would let him pick them out.
I know it would ruin the "surprise", but in some fields
surprises are over rated.

Now-a-days I use carabiners mostly for loading and rigging stuff... so hard on them.

I buy in bulk and cheap when I catch a blem sale...



As for life safety stuff... name brands only... also a very personal decision on what works... some guys are OCD on a safety gate... some guys hate them. Some like "D"... some like oval. Weight is a big factor for some, others... not so much.

The ones above are great for safety chains on a trailer etc. Logging and winching, but know the limits and plan for failure.

I have only broken one carabiner to failure... and bent two.

Moosejaw and Steep and Cheap carry the blems... many others as well.

I've spent most every fall among the mountains of the west.
Alaska and Wyoming were most challenging of my travels but I would never claim to be anywhere near a mountain climber.
I do however appreciate what these extreme seekers do.
My son was just talking the other night about a must see show on Netflix about a mountain climber.

Climbed for fun and did SAR for a living. Petzl professional line is good to go and designed for his use. OSHA standards and regs are often far different than recreational climbing requirements.

Is the necessary gear not provided?

Thanks all. I went with the Black Diamond. These are not for safety rigging, those are provided by the employer. These would be for attaching other stuff that he wants to take with him on the climb up.

Just a side note. He had to climb a tower last week when we had the major wind storm here in KS. He said the whole tower was moving.

Good god do not use those or ones like them to hold anything you truly value.

Perhaps your gloves to a pack.

If your climbing you do not want anything on your rack or harness that is not rated to hold you in a fall. Sooner or later you will mix stuff up, use the wrong beaner and not know it.
30 years ago I was climbing rocks, ice, and mnts. NC to AK, and was a high angle rescue instructor. Do not go cheap if you ass is a hanging.
