Have any of you guys bought any new carhartt coats? I have some older ones, and the new ones can't hold a candle to them. Has carhartt started making stuff overseas, or are they just making junk like everybody else?
Posted By: chlinstructor Re: carhartt - 12/19/21
Haven’t bought a new one in YEARS. Still have a couple of older ones. At least 10 years old or older.
Posted By: wabigoon Re: carhartt - 12/19/21
They are good, I question if they a better buy than Key's.
Posted By: skfullen Re: carhartt - 12/19/21
I've noticed the same thing in Carhartt shirts. They are now made elsewhere, and the quality has declined.

In another thread,

Some one papered that carhartt got woke.

Maybe that’s the problem.

Yep. Still better than most T-shirts though. And still have pockets. Hard to find a good T-shirt with pockets, nowadays.
So I still buy Carhartts.

I really like their work jeans.

The rain defender 1/4 zip hooded sweatshirt is tough as nails. Live in one all winter. Their pants are still decent or at least good as anything else for the price.
Still have a chore jacket with the blanket liner from around 1992ish. Still in good shape
Posted By: logger Re: carhartt - 12/19/21
I do know they quit making their double front pants in loden green. I have enough new ones to last me a few years.
Posted By: strikeu Re: carhartt - 12/19/21
I have some carhartt hoodies fairly new. tough as nails
Posted By: Salty303 Re: carhartt - 12/19/21
You have to pay attention to the labels they've branched into stretch, quick dry and that kind of stuff. You can still get the original heavy duck if that's what you want make sure that's what you're buying.

I bought a new Carhartt "Yukon Extremes" coat a month ago for working in winter cold temps. I have worn it every day since. I can not tell you where it was manufactured. i can tell you it is worth every penny of the $180 purchase price.

The shell is water resistant cordura type nylon, the insulation is 3M insulate. It is very wind resistant.

The nylon shell is much superior to cotton duck for anything except hot work and campfire sparks.

Yes & yes.

More & more overseas products. Trying to make every type of clothing a person could wear, as apposed to the basic hardcore line that they used to specialize in.
Posted By: Remsen Re: carhartt - 12/19/21
Bought my first Carhartt product a month or so ago, one of these: https://www.murdochs.com/products/m...s-quilted-flannel-lined-duck-active-jac/

I needed something heavier for hunting and snowmobile riding when doing chores and figured I'd see what the Carhartt stuff was like.

Best jacket I've ever had...very comfortable, warm as could be, sheds snow nicely and I can rip around on the snowmobile in freezing temps with no problem, almost as good as the snowmobile clothing I have. I was at the MSU football game yesterday and I don't think the temps ever broke 20 degrees, but I never noticed the cold. Whether it lasts is to be seen, but I'm pretty happy with it so far.

I agree. I have a Carhartt coat and sweatshirt, but my bibs are key. Damn things wear better than the Carhartt's.
Posted By: DryPowder Re: carhartt - 12/19/21
Carhartt moved their manufacturing from Mexico to India other places. I think they are trying to follow Filson's lead with their new "styles".

I bought a enough from STP on closeout to last me the rest of my life grin

The rain defender sweat shirts are legit, that's probably the only thing they make I'm interested in. My Scheels wool blend Hoodie spanks Carhartts Azz though.

Remson, that one has a good zipper which of course is a good thing.
(loved to see the Cats win, probably a fun atmosphere!)

Last year I bought/ordered a fancy Carhartt 'work' coat.

Nice coat(not the heavy weight duck) but has a cheese dick POS [bleep] excuse for a zipper. I was pissed but didn't send it back.

I haven't bought any coats or bibs in a few years, but as Salty said, they still seem to have their original strength stuff if you look for it.

I have recently started trying some of their shirts and pants. My best find in a long time is their flannel lined blue jeans. Talk about fartin' in high cotton...those jeans are dynamite!
Posted By: wabigoon Re: carhartt - 12/19/21
Carhartt now insulates the full fount of the bibs, and as Sam said, they also now have a zipper.

That game was something else...I snagged great seats by a stroke of luck (I was listening to the previous game against Sam Houston and the announcer said that tickets for the semi finals would go on sale in a few minutes after the game ended, and I got through before the scalpers could grab the good seats). Some of those kids can really play tough football. I am not such a fan of a QB who runs the ball about 80% of the time, but so far it's worked.

As for the Carhartt, the zipper is hell for stout. Only thing I don't like is the two external pockets, which have nothing to keep them closed and are at an angle. I tend to stuff things in the outside pockets that will fall out (like ammo, a range finder, keys) and prefer pocket that can be closed up. I guess people don't like the look of zipped pockets on the outside, but I don't give a dang about looks. Small nit for an otherwise good product at a fair price.
Posted By: Dillonbuck Re: carhartt - 12/20/21
I'm very disappointed in the T-shirts.

When I first started wearing them, they lasted s couple years.
Didn't stain or stretch. Now, the stain easy, some stretch, and
they get holes.

They are still the best I can find, but I just started wearing some
sewed, pocket T's from J C Penny's. Not as heavy, but If they last a year,
at $7, I can pitch them at a year and be happy.

Carhartt is falling into the trap other hard use lines have experienced.
They become popular with the trendy wannabes, then raise prices
and cut quality. Because they can.
Posted By: SamOlson Re: carhartt - 12/20/21
That freshman QB was something else, can't believe they ran him that much!

(hijack over...)

Your jacket has the same zipper they use in their Arctic Duck work coat which is one of the toughest/warmest work coats of all time.

i live in their overalls when i'm working outside. i have a few rain defender hooded sweatshirts bought within the past couple years as well as their heavy duty hooded winter coat. all excellent for the price i paid. we have a outlet style place that sells irregulars near us that gets carhartt stuff in. their rigby pants and bibs are awesome. tighter fit than the work ones and are great in the summer. those i bought within the past year. so no problems that i see.

I have bought Carhartt for years, you are correct, the new stuff is not where as good as the old stuff

I haven't been able to find boxer shorts in the heavy duck.

Have not bought anything Carhartt recently except a couple watch caps. I have a couple chore coats, brush popper jacket and a Sunday go-to-meeting Rancher coat.

I've got several long and short sleeve Carhartt T-Shirts. Wear them just about every day. Also have 2 Shirt Jackets. The T-Shirts are the best I've found. Yeah you can eventually wear them out, but they last pretty good.

I have 4 new ones that are about 6 years old. I hardly wear them because they are way too long. I always wondered why they make them so damn long ?
Posted By: TooOldToCare Re: carhartt - 12/20/21
A few years back I was looking at Carhartt flannel shirts. Most were made in Vietnam. I check the labels . I’ve only bought t shirts lately. They are still decent. They don’t cling, so still GTG for CCW.

Got the old arctic setup, insulated bibs and that coat with the coyote(?) fur on the hood, black. Stuff is so warm I only use it when temps are below zero. Had that stuff for 25 years now. Been through a pair of the normal insulated bibs about every decade. Hate it when a set wears out, they get so comfortable after a bunch of use.

Got a chore coat, thing was awesome, quilted lining, lots of pockets, its about to bite the dust, doesn’t last as long as the bibs, I think its only 7 years old. Have to find another one soon. Most places only carry the lower line stuff, most of what I like you have to find at mom and pop places.

I get my stuff from a little variety store in the town I grew up in in northern MO. Good gal runs the place, she stocks their better stuff. Like those all cotton button down shirts that are heavy, have flap pockets that button down, don’t really wrinkle, and last for years. Pricey, but worth it,

My dad was a welder, practically lived in his Carhartt Detroit jacket. When his beloved dog died, about a year after dad passed, I buried him in Dad's old jacket.
I know he approved.

I like Carhartt's, unfortunately, most of the stuff is now made in Mexico.
Posted By: joken2 Re: carhartt - 12/20/21

Carhartt used to have two manufacturing factories here in my area within 20 miles or so of each other but as far as I know they closed both down several years ago. Both locations also had outlet stores where the public could buy 2nds, overruns, closeouts, sample runs, etc., at real decent discounted prices. Bought a fair bit of my work and outdoor cloths there back in the day. One thing I found interesting was they used to manufacture clothing for some other well known brands, too. Bought a couple of pairs of L.L. Bean flannel lined jeans at their outlet store once as well as some other things not branded Carhartt.
Posted By: Dillonbuck Re: carhartt - 12/20/21
I'm sure this will piss off some, but..."merica".

Rember when Carhartt stuff was seriously for outdoor workers.
And your new coat or bibs would have a little piece of paper in the pocket.

"Union Made With Pride
By____" and a little American flag.
Signed by the person that made them.

Not to get the whole union thing going,
But the quality is down, the price isn't.

More a made with pride in the USAm than a union thing, IMHO.

I wear Carhartt and Duluth. I prefer Duluth cargo pants, unlined and flannel lined. Carhartt coats are better than Duluths I believe.

I have a couple or three Carharts. The latest was a pair of bibs I use for bird hunting.

Seems to be the same quality as before. Should check the tag for country of origin.

I bought a pair of Round House cotton duck bib overalls. They are not insulated but double thick on the front thighs. I looked at Cardhartt uninsulated bibs at Academy. Just didn’t like their "feel". I really like the Round House!!! I have a cardhartt coat. One of the old chore jackets with thin blanket liner. Its about 30 years old and I still wear it. It is starting to have seen better days. Lots of wear. Looking really "seasoned" 🤣. Ive had my doubts if the newer stuff would last as long. Not that I got that many years left😁.
Posted By: Mr_Harry Re: carhartt - 12/20/21
Couple old coats still going strong. Newest stuff is a few pairs of the felt-lined pants. Seem same as ever - great. I like them mostly for the pants. My best rain jacket ever is a carhartt though.
Posted By: OldmanoftheSea Re: carhartt - 12/20/21
bunch of old stuff.. when I see the askng price on some of the new stuff I can't imagine paying to replace my stuff...I saw a hoodie with a $165 price tag on it a few weeks ago...
Posted By: MD521 Re: carhartt - 12/20/21
Carhartt work clothes were made to last several years, and they did. Their manufacturing changed so their products would wear out quicker. People will replace their worn out work clothes when needed even though the price is up and the quality is down. The way of the world, now days.

I hear you, Bob - in my case the ramshackle clothes reflect the owner - complete with wear and tear.
Posted By: mark shubert Re: carhartt - 12/20/21
Recently had a new zipper put in my Carhartt hoodie - hopefully get another year or two out of it.
Chore coats last a decade, or more, insulated bibs almost that, hoodies used to last me 2 years max - now maybe 4.
Guess I'm gettin' old and slow! smile

I agree... I use other brands now...

Duluth pants are my current go to, but my needs are more about comfort and movement in construction and wrenching than Alaska or snow machining anymore.

Current temp is 33 and that is the coldest it been for the past 10 days.

Wicks (WOW - Wicks Outdoor Works) was the best I found... after they retired... Stone Creek took up their line... I have no idea on Stone Creek, but they sure look authentic (at least their "fashion models" do)... Not a single "woke" picture on their whole website.

I wear a lot of Carhartt Henley T's and their jacket when it's cold enough. The newer stuff isn't as good as their old. I started wearing Dickey's Henleys. They're made overseas too. Not as heavy as Carhartt but ok for the price when you can get them. They're out most of the time.
During WWII America outproduced all other nations combined. Now we can't outproduce Vietnam. What a shame. "Change You Can Believe In".

I have lots of their stuff, some old and some new. My work jacket has to be going on at least 10 years and I wear it from October to May, no issues. I have a lot of their heavy sweatshirts that I live in and I have not noticed any problems over the years.

So I still buy Carhartts.

I really like their work jeans.

Literally the only T-shirts I have are Carhartt Force T-shirts. They're tough, fit nice, and almost anything but paint is washed out of them. They're not cheap though. Usually around $20 a shirt.
