I don't doubt that is how it is taught somewhere in the US public school system.
Then one day, for no reason at all, their currency was worthless.

Yes, indeed. I have a couple of their bank notes, one for 20 million Reichsmarks and one for 50 million. I haven't looked at the 50 lately but the 20 is printed on only one side.
