Ground ain't been sundried much.
Soft center of corn stalks still really squishy.
Green schit on field where it been cut by combine not wilted yet.

Woulda been nice to cut it 3 5 days prior and let some more birds discover it ahead of the hunt.

Reminds me of a midweek morning crappie fishing on LOZ when my sons were just starting out, we put on before day light. Went to an open bank and waited of daylight. I was not fishing much and working with the boys. I can see about a mile up the main channel both ways, after 30 mins I hear the first boat of the day. See it making its way up the lake from a distance. Didn’t think much of it until I heard him cut his motor back. I turned to see him coming right at me. First thought was it is the game warden. Nope, 2 ass hats [bleep] down and start fishing within 3 boat lengths of me. 2 freaking boats as far as you can see and they had to fish the same 100’ bank I’m on.

I mouthed off something about it being a big lake and they both looked at each other and continued to fish. I told the boys to put their poles away and I blew out of there to one of the 100’s of other spots.

I had a VERY distinctive boat and word got back to me about 2 dudes talking about how they had pisses some guy off and described my boat. Turned out that one of them was from my hometown and I let it be known in our local circles what the true story was and they were crucified.

Morale of the story, those fookers will get what’s coming.

Probably 6 of us left on the field now.

Nearest guy is probably 300 yards away.

Maybe a 5' pole with a socket on top then find a dead tree top with some horizontal limbs on it. Use some dove decoys on the limbs about 3 I'd say then set it in the socket get them 7-9' up in the air. Prolly won't land but if it gets you a in range pass shot what the hell.

Field ain't been cut but 1 day.
They shoulda let it cook 4 or 5 days after cutting to attract more birds in before opening it.

They could have given themselves a buffer to set a date well before hand even given weather.

Ain't the 1st time a leased field has be done last minute cut like this even though it was announced 3 or 4 weeks prior.

Lease Ends on sunday.
Next weekend I bet this field will be full of birds hitting it.

When we go hunt my Buddy’s Ranch over near Coleman, TX we always have to hit a little Mom & Pop Joint called “ Best Fried Chicken”.
Think Church’s Chicken, without the Groids, ran by a little old white family in their 3 generation of owning it.
They don’t throw the pieces of chicken in the deep frier till you place your order. It’s so damn hot when they bring it out it’ll remove all the skin from the roof of your mouth and scald your tongue so bad you won’t be able to taste anything for a month.
We always have to worn the newbies we take with us to “let it cool a little, for you take a bite”
Only other thing they serve are french fries, hush puppies, homemade rolls, and homemade peach and apple fried pies.
He who shoots the worse has to buy dinner.
It’s a 2 hour drive from the Ranch, so I haven’t made it over there yet to see if they have any doves.
Still zilch here at the Ranch. That little cool front and 6”s of rain blew out what few local birds we had.
And I’ve yet to fire a shot this year.
Might have to head to Coleman and try it next week sometime. It’s well worth the trip for the fried chicken alone. 🤠
