Karma is a cold bitch.
Are there precious metals in catalytic converters?

Boy that's some crack detective work there!!
Yes. A number of them.
"Police say thieves can get from $100 to $150 for each converter. The insurance group counted just 3,969 reports of stolen catalytic converters in 2019, more than 17,000 in 2020 and more than 52,000 last year."

The trend is growing exponentially.

The true meaning of live by the sword, die by the sword. Live by crime, die by crime.
If only that happened every time.

That's the beauty of the situation, the only way the thief would ever be punished for his crime is by doing it himself.

The DA has already released him.

Not enough evidence to convict him.

Yes, and probably suing the company that made the jack.

Crackhead trade bait. Or maybe cracked head in this case.

This thread just gave me a frightening thought. One of those converter thieves could get right under my Toyota Tacoma and cut off the converter without having to jack the truck up.

^^^^yep, it happens a lot.

They are hell on vehicles with high ground clearance for that reason

Oh, I thought he was dead. How'd he survive a car falling on him?

PS I dated a girl many years ago who lost her father to this, but it was his own car in his own garage.

He is dead . And was not his vehicle.

I was in Portland on business over the summer, went to Avis to pick up my rental and their entire inventory of 20 plus cars had their catalytic converters stolen overnight, in a fenced yard. They did manage to find me a car but only because it was returned after the theft had occurred.

I’d like to buy the guy who kicked the jack handle a couple of beers.

SOOOooooo!

They 'believe' he may have been trying to steal it.....

BUT, they don't think anything criminal happened!?!?!?!?!?!?

Which is exactly why I have a full set of skid plates on my 4Runner. I thought about hassle and inconvenience of having to replace a cat, especially on a cross country trip. I figure the $1,000 for the skids was insurance that the my cat stays my cat.

Fuggers can still get it, but it's gonna take a while cutting 1/4" plate. Won't be a 15 second job.
