My wife's aunt raises them and says she makes good money on them

Just wondering if anyone on here raises goats for meat for themselves or to sell. Or do you pasture them with cows to clean up weeds that the cows don't eat.

Just curious. I'm not really a fan of them, but my wife wants to get a few to clean up weeds. She has 3 pasture monuments and I'm really not interested in having something else that eats and don't make us any money.

Curious what 24 hour guys have to say
I have a batch of them that I use for a muzzie bordello. Makes good money.
It depends on the local market. We tried raising a few Boers. We have Mexicans and a few Muslims and Indians here who eat a lot of goats but they won't pay what they're worth. Feed's expensive. We could raise the meat goats on pasture but feeding the mothers during the winter offset the cheap grass.
Before you jump in, carefully check over your fences. The old saying is that if a fence will hold water, it'll hold goats. They're escape artists. We had one that learned to grab a sliding bolt gate latch and slide it sideways to open it. They're fun, though. They have much more personality than other farm animals.
Don't plan on letting them roam free. They love high places, like roof of your car.
I had a herd of 30 years ago don’t do it trust me
We have a couple whose primary function is weed control. We sell them at the end of the year (Christmas season) to our Mexican customers. For our business, it's as much an advertising effort as a revenue effort. Anything we can do to get the customers talking about us in positive terms is a good thing. Goats are one of those things.

There is a strong seasonality to the demand, and if you try to sell when you want to sell, there's no money to be had. At the right time, with an animal the right size, to the right person, you can make a buck. Think of it as selling the equivalent of hams or turkeys, but to Hispanics and Muslims. Don't try to sell turkeys to white people on the 4th of July.

This time of year, every Tom, Dick and Harriet is getting rid of goats from their back yard, cheap, cheaper, or free. Lots of "come and get it" ads in the paper. Usually with a tear jerker explanation "these are my friends, can't split up the two sisters".

Biggest concern I have is predation (both two legged and four legged). Anything larger than a house cat will kill a kid and drag it off, and it's a lot easier to cap a goat and throw it in the trunk of a car than a steer.
I really wanted to get a couple 4H goats so I'd not need to mow the lawn. Then came to my senses.

This year has seen us get out of the Beta fish business (he ded), we got a cat that seems mousy, getting a puppy and have a crazy-assed parakeet ranch operation and have to give them away. Guinea pigs was a bust btdt. Kid handles death well - get the shovel!
Raising goats is an exercise in futility.
I enjoyed the goats we had, but we never had a "herd". Never over 3 or 4 at a time.
Rock Chuck pretty much has it down pat on casual goat ownership.
If you end up overpopulated, the market is squat.
Give them away or sell them for a song and a month later, the market goes nuts.
The Boer goat market is absolutely insane. No way would I pay that much for a goat.
Know a lady here in OK who raises some sort of Nigerian "Nut Grass" goats or some such. Ungodly sums they asked for goats that didn't appear any more special that a $10 Spanish goat.

P.S. - I have known folks who made a butt loads of money off those Boer goats....and the Nigerian goats. No idea of their marketing strategy....but it seemed to work. People drove thousands of miles and paid hundreds, if not thousands for a goat.
Not yet……though, considering milk and meat goats for our consumption only!
memtb
Hahahaha!!!
Ask Slumlord about meat goats. 🤣🤣🤣

He still thinks to this day I was the one that did it..

If you get into registered breeding stock, there's no end to what people will pay. A common registered Boer buck can easily top $1000. Show quality bucks can sell for much more.

Farmer around here caught a guy screwing one of his goats. Held the guy at gunpoint until the cops showed up and arrested him. Went to court and the judge sentenced him to 6mo county and $1500. The farmer asked the judge how much of the $1500 was his and judge said nothing. The farmer argued that his goat was ruined, wouldn't let anyone near it. Judge just shrugged it off..... Some people don't deserve to breath!

I guess I don't need to ask how the chinchilla pelts sold.
Lol!!!

Since Slumlord doesn't want to elaborate about his meat goats episode.

I will, anyways about 7 or 8 yrs ago a member or members of the old Tn Mafia.
Put a ad in our 6 or 7 county weekly free advertising paper called the Peddler.

"Free meat goats" and some other words emphasizing his urgency to give them away.
With his old ph # in the ad.
🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤣🤣🤣

Dude was getting calls like 15 20 times a day from fuuuked up people for weeks on end about his "free meat goats"

Back then ads ran in the peddler for 3 weeks instead of 1 now.

He still thinks I did that schit I think, he will ask me about it like maybe once a year or so.
I just start dying laughing about it when he does.

We all know what he should have gotten for the kid.
But the other?
That's sick in a legendary way!

Before that incident...

The woman's young daughter wondered why she was leaving at midnight,
followed her and snuck into the courthouse to see what was up.
A cop caught here, and then accompanied her on her search only to
find Higgins banging away on the top of his desk.

After that incident...this came out.

Imagine how it pencils-out to drive a 50 mile round-trip to give away a damned parakeet!
Through the grapevine in Corvallis Oregon about 1997, I became aware of a troubled family in nearby Sweet Home (a logging community). Father, mother, son, daughter, AND dog. Pretty much any perverted combination that you can imagine was occurring. The son seemed to be the center of it all doing all of the others with emphasis on the dog and sister. True.
“urgency to give them away.”

Thanks for that part

😱😱🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻
Well, this thread sure went haywire, quickly.

Carry on.
I always thought if I got into homesteading that milk goats made a lot more sense than milk cows. You get quite a bit of milk out of a 100 pound goat, and they eat anything. Pasture them in a burdock patch or raspberry tangle and they will devour it.
Probably not. I think most of the guys on here just raise goats for F'ckin.

My wife wanted a milk goat. Then I told her that when I go camping or traveling, she could stay home to milk it. They have to be milked twice a day every day. Milking guarantees that you'll never leave home for more than 12 hours for as long as you have the animal. .She changed her mind about the goat.
I’ve got 3 half Pygmy half dairy we’ve had for a couple months. My wife thought they’d be neat to eat the [bleep] the ponies won’t. I figured I could eat like a Mexican moslem if it didn’t work out.

Problem is the little [bleep] grow on you. I’d have a hard time eating one of them now.

I have one pygmy that’s practically half dog. That lil fugger gets a pass. His mom and sister will bring me more goats, so they get a pass. “Uncle Ho” gets a pass because he’s a runt and wouldn’t even be worth slaughtering. Oreo, I wanted to kill for weeks as he escaped and had me chasing my ass until I just flat gave up and said “let him be coyote shït”, only to be captured by neighbors after 6 weeks on his own, no human assistance. Gotta reward those genetics, so he’s my breeding ram. That leaves Trips, but he’s been like friggin Eeyore since getting banded, and I can’t kill anything that pathetic just for a few pounds of cabrito. So I’m stuck with six goats and probably more for the foreseeable future. There’s a lot of Himalaya berries and star thistle around, never mind the good grazing, and they’re fun to watch just getting up to their antics.

P.S. I’m a rank novice at the livestock thing, but I can tell you that sheep are a lot less picky than goats when it comes to weed removal, so if that’s a good part of the reason for keeping meat/fuzzy lawnmowers, I’d seriously think of that route. Plus they have near zero personality and are so obtuse that you want to kill them. I’d think the market for sheep vs goats has a lot of overlap as well.
I hate sheep, had them when I was a kid. Only animals stupider than chickens lol.

But I agree on watching the goats. Damn they’re funny.
Old guy down the road raised and sold goats. He kept at it for years until he died. He was definitely doing it for money because he kept at it and turned over a lot of goats. For some reason I remember the sign saying Beefmaster goats. I had a Jamaican truck driving friend who bought goats from him regularly. Said they were really good eating goats. I think developing a clientele is the key. Once customers knew he had goats for sale all the time he had no problem selling goats. The communities that eat goats will spread the word. I know the Muslim families wanted the goats killed in a special religious way. Old guy would arrange for religious butchering. Downside was all the customers were Mexicans , Muslims , Jamaicans , and Haitians. Damned few WASP’s buying goats.

Same here with sheep. Neighbor had them when I was a kid. Stupid stinking animals. Zero personality.
We raised Boer goats and made money but you have to keep the undocumented democrats from stealing them
I'm considering half a beef at the moment, so no.
We here in Alaska do. But ya gotta climb for them.
Meh eh eh eh eh....

When we had goats, we pastured them with my pack llamas. The llamas would be laying down and the kids would climb all over them, like they were a playground. It was pretty funny to watch.
This thread became entertaining in a hurry.
Scrolling through it is like being at work. Lol.
Glad to see that building tradesmen aren't the only sick bastard's roaming the earth. Lol

Hollywood: The Boer breed was developed in the early 1900's in South Africa. I don't know how many times I've seen Boers in movies set in the 17 and 1800's. It's equivalent to seeing Jeremiah Johnson carrying a Win 94.
My grandad had a Basque sheepherder that watched over a band of roughly 2500 sheep a year and a few goats with bells. Every couple months the local Basque herders would get together for a weekend with red wine and BBQ a goat or two. This was usually on grandads ranch so we were invited.
Not many can cook a goat like the Basque, it was great eating and I miss those days of the 50's and 60's.

I grew up in Boise. There were lots of Basques around, most descended from sheepherders who immigrated starting in the late 1800's. They were always having big parties and dinners. They had some good looking daughters, too. I dated several of them over the years. Basque names are complicated to spell but surprisingly easy to pronounce.
I’ve known a few folks that raised meat goats.

There is a large population of dune coons around the Seattle area, hence a big market for halal goat/sheep meat. They all seemed to have no problem selling all they could raise. Don’t know what it went for though.
