We have done it before:

"The United States defeated England 1–0 on 29 June 1950, in a group match of the 1950 FIFA World Cup at Estádio Independência in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The result is one of the biggest upsets in the competition's history."

Damn, I grew up over there, them losing to us would be like 1783 and 1814 all over again.

Anyhow, my brother’s kid played soccer with the US team’s Captain in Middle School, that other kid was better grin

He turned professional at age 16.

Not a very interesting game. England is in, but we are not out. We have to beat Iran on Tuesday.

Remember what the Ayatollah did to those Marines, and let's kick Iranian ass!
Posted By: Birdwatcher Re: Go USA, Beat England! - 11/25/22
Explanation for the peanut gallery:

Each team in Group B plays three matches, top two advance as part of sixteen teams (from 8 groups) advancing to elimination rounds.

Group B have all played two matches.

England: Won 1 Drawn 1. 3+1=4 points

Iran: Won 1 Lost 1. 3+0=3 points

USA: Drawn 2. 1+1= 2 points

Wales: Drawn 1 Lost 1. 1+0= 1point

The USA is heavily favored to beat Iran on Tuesday (England beat them 6-2). If we win we will have 5 points and advance with the top 2 whatever the outcome of England vs Wales.

Could be both England and the US played defensively today, both sides with the expectation of playing an easier opponent their next game.

Tuesday’s US - Iran game is gonna be the one to watch, both sides facing elimination if they lose and the US facing elimination if it’s draw.

Plus it’s the US vs. Iran close to Iran’s home turf.
Posted By: simonkenton7 Re: Go USA, Beat England! - 11/25/22
You are right Birdwatcher, both teams went for a draw. Boring. Ah well, but in the next round, it is "win or go home."

I think you're wrong about that, ol' JG was a standout midfielder in college. Until a guy knocked him down and he scraped his knee, he had to quit after that.

Very common career-ending injury for soccer players.

So many that don’t like soccer, have to open a thread about soccer, (multiple times) to let everyone know (weird ‘virtue signal’?) that they don’t like soccer, because it’s soccer.

Also to announce that they are clueless as to rules and strategy.

Classic can’t make this up. 😂😂

Not enough to stop me from making jokes about it. I mean 0-0 kinda calls for jokes. No?

MLB and NFL wish they had a formula to make their respective sports as non stop as a soccer game.

0-0 is usually a close match with a lot of tension and anticipation for goal.

It should be understood that guys don’t flop in soccer because they’re hurt, they do it because, statistically speaking, it works. Gets them more free kicks, penalties etc and interrupts plays by the opposing team.

I do agree with others in that I think it ruins the sport.

I know y'all non-fans are disgusted by the falling down and fake crying. I am a long-time soccer fan and it is disgusting to me. The sport wasn't played this way when I got in to it 50 years ago. This flopping and crying was introduced by the South Americans about 40 years ago.

Soccer today is a mixture of athletics, and theater. Act like you got hurt to draw a foul. Half the game is players acting like crybabies. It has gotten so bad that I almost gave up on watching.
I must say, the flopping is drastically reduced this World Cup.

By the way soccer is a dangerous sport. I broke my left ankle playing at Ga. Tech, I was in a plaster cast, and on crutches for 7 weeks. A few years later, playing at Ga. College, I tore the medial collateral ligament in the left knee, just missed surgery but had to go on crutches for 8 weeks. Those crutches get old fast, especially bad for stairs.

Mexico is good, but they have a screw loose in the brain, going in to the game playing for a tie.

We win, we advance and eliminate them.

All they have to do is draw. A draw, Iran kicks the USA out of the World Cup. They win, same difference.

Talk about a grudge match.......

The families of Iran’s World Cup soccer team have been threatened with imprisonment and torture if the players fail to “behave” ahead of the match against the USA on Tuesday, a source involved in the security of the games said.

Following the refusal of Iranian players to sing the nation’s national anthem in their opening match against England on November 21, the source said that the players were called to a meeting with members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The source said that they were told that their families would face “violence and and torture” if they did not sing the national anthem or if they joined any political protest against the Tehran regime.

The players sang the anthem before their second game against Wales last Friday, which saw 2-0 victory for Iran.

The source, who is closely monitoring Iran’s security agencies operating in Qatar over the World Cup period, said that dozens of officers from the IRGC had been drafted in to monitor the Iranian players who are not allowed to mingle outside the squad or meet with foreigners.

“There are a large number of Iranian security officers in Qatar collecting information and monitoring the players,” the source said.

Why would 10,000 Iranians be cheering for America? The team ain't the regime- its the people, and they protested as much as they could against the regime - no? Am being honest here.
I feel for their players. I don't know anything about USA men's team but if they are anything like the women's team I don't see why anyone here would root for them. Am I wrong?

Least I haven't seen or heard of any pro globalist type stuff from them yet but I have not followed.
