Is there still one that doesn't suck? Somebody told me the Brazilian Tramontina is actually cheap and good. I bought 2 plus paid an upgrade (6 dollars) to get the handles fitted and the blade sharpened. I will update when I get them but until then, is there a manufacturer that still makes one that won't bend when you hit a limb with it?
I sorely needed one on my last trip trying to break trail to get to water so I could fly fish last week. I had a Gerber Kukri but a limb bent the piss out of it a few years ago and I think if I ground it out, it would break upon use.
Trams are good. I would have spent my $6 on a good file and sharpened it myself. You will need to sharpen it fairly often anyway. Imacasa is a good brand too. Basically anything made in Brazil or South America, rather than China.

So, I went through a pretty good machete phase... tried many... the kukries, the katanas, the bush/cane knifes, even the giant bowies. Know what I kept coming back to? The good ole' Ontario Knife Co. GI. Machete. They just balance amazing. Hold an edge well, easy to sharpen, especially with a file or grinder and will hack through anything. I've cut through everything from grass to 10" live trees with these blades and they beg for more. The woodsmans pal and cane style knifes work good for lil stuff, but you won't be falling a 6"+ tree with them if the need arises. I'll take my OKC GI Blade every time.
One thing notable about the Pals and the Swedish brush axes tho is they don’t look to have a blaze orange handle. It sure is easy to set these things down in use, blaze orange makes it easier to pick them up again.

best one I ever had was a Cold Steel Sax style. I have 12 and 18 inch examples. Over 10 years hard use now with zero problems. Sadly, Cold Steel does not make them anymore.
I became a big fan of bolo machetes 30-40 years ago. Used one for quite a while until it went missing. I think I left it in a truck I sold. I now use the Cold Steel version with complete satisfaction. Having the center of gravity moved forward makes its effectiveness much more pronounced, especially when you occasionally have to cut a small tree or thick limb.
I also have the Gerber version of the Fiskar pictured above. It is a good tool but difficult to sharpen because of its concave edge.
If you can get one, "Imacasa" (sp?) from El Salvador. Had one for 20 years that I bought in San Miguel during a mission trip. Excellent tool for trimming and cutting. Held a good sharp edge once I got it to my liking. Accidentally ran over it last year with lawn mower. Blade "shattered" into 8-10 pieces... Grrrr... Still have not found anything local to replace it...
These work good too! If you can find them. These are called a faschinemesser or in England a billhook. Issued to the sappers in the 18th and 19th century. In the UK they still use them for hedging. I bought a 1/2 doz. derelict ones from the UK and rehandled them.
I've had one for over 25 years except mines has a black handle....my cousin picked one up and it has an orange handle told her it was a great addition to the design....

I have a few of these, brought them back in my suitcase. My little brown wife wields them like an extension of her arm. A bit frightening.
My BIL, who is dangerous around almost any tools, gave himself a cut in the calf with a machete that required 38 stitches to close. Machetes and hatchets cause a lot of below the waist self-inflicted injuries when used without care.

I used it quite a bit as, every summer, as soon as school let out, my brother, several friends and I went feral. We’d live in the woods, always on the water somewhere, foraging, fishing, killing anything we could and slipping into town occasionally to raid gardens. The machete was invaluable for building shelters.

I've got one as well. It came from my father in-laws stash of camping gear and now lives in my side by side.
Not a machete, a knife , shovel, hammer, or pry bar. But it is all the above. Destroying one would have to be the intention. Otherwise it's hard to hurt one.
One of these is not always my first choice, but I still value it as good tool & glad I have it.
Check out the Ontario Knife Company SP-8 Survival Machete $95.14 on their website. I’ve had one for many years and like it. Great size for brushing trails. Just the right length and weight. Comfortable to swing with good balance. Safe and sturdy dangler sheath. Holds a good edge and easy to sharpen. No downsides from me. Really, check it out. One of those tools for a lifetime, you won’t damage it.
Edit: New sheaths are not as nice as the older leather ones with snaps like mine. I’d look on ebay for one like mine.
Surveying we carried several items to cut "line of sight." The cane knife, large flat with back hook, works fine on grass style brush, as does the machete, but with hard brush or hardwoods, like oak scrub, it takes a heaver tempered blade. Here on the farm, we have multiple types of brush, so I carry 3 different styles brush cutters on my cart. I have a two hand brush hook and two different sling blades, just do not like to use them, rather use the Stihl carbide brush blade. I also have a 6' Bush Hog, which is much, much better at brush clearing than all that hand stuff.
Gunzo: that is a very practical length. Bet is one heck of a chopper! Looks like saw teeth on the spine, will it saw wood and bone?
The saw teeth might be the least effective portion of the tool. The thick blade(.250") might hider the saw part. Haven't really studied the teeth to see if they could be tuned up a bit. But likely.
I doubt this Corona tool would last very long. Maybe if you were swinging it through soft banana leaves in a jungle setting, but in North America I'd have little confidence in a $17.00 tool probably made in China. Even if it's made in the USA, how much quality and durability could be in a tool of this kind for $17.00? I sure would not want to be carrying it constantly either since it's got no sheath. I guess since it's only $17.00, you'd not be out much if it's junk.

In years of running crews using machetes while surveying, I've seen some pretty bad cuts. And some really close calls.
I know it sounds dumb, but I always took the time to show crew members just how to safely use a machete.
One of the reasons we were issued the Swedish Sandvik ones on the stream crews.
Timber company didn't want any injuries. Neither did we as safety issues were added in to our monthly bonus calculations, for the whole company. People be pissed at us if we chopped open a leg!

We have two of them for several years now. Much more effective than a heavier bladed one with hard plastic grips, and way less painful to use. One inch saplings drop in one swipe. The trick is to not chop straight in, but bring it down fast in a slicing, diagonal motion so more of the blade cuts. The shape and length of the thing is ideal. Thicker stuff requires another whack or two. Corona is one tough little rascal. Works better than a sling blade or axe on smallish stuff. Like you say, small financial risk. And BTW, it does come with a sheath. You won't be out much and will be surprised.

Now finally a subject I know something about. I've chopped and marked over 300 miles of U.S.F.S. property lines in the Louisiana jungle. As Crash_Pad suggests, light, thin, and razor sharp is the way to go but 18 inches is too short and 30 inches is not too long. The machetes I liked best were made in Brazil. They could be sharpened to shave with a Nicholson Black Diamond file. I would sit down and sharpen it up about every 1/4 mile.
Machetes are dangerous to the user. I cut myself a few times (usually late in the day) and went home with blood in my boot. My bride is an RN and knows how to sew so we went through that a couple of times. One of my partners on a contract swatted a wasp that stung him on the neck. The problem was that he had his machete in his hand and sliced his neck open creating a ghastly gash that barely missed his carotid artery.
I have an American made 18 inch machete with a heavy blade and a saw back that I find not very useful. When you swing a blade thousands of times in a day light, flexible, long, and sharp is the way to go.

I have 2, both Gerber. Not planned that way. One is "Gator Golok". This is a fairly conventional "knife" design, short-ish for a machete, with a very thick, very heavy blade. Possibly too much for whacking blackberries, but the weight is nice if you have to cut heavier wood with it. The other is "Gator Brush Cutter". It's a first class blackberry cutter. It does unexpectedly well with heavier stuff. Somethin' about that hooked blade, dunno what, but it will really lean into solid wood .. sorta magnifies the force? I've sheared off 2 inch pine and fir branches with a single whack. Nothing is perfect, these do what I ask of them, but I do wish I had a more conventional 18-20 inch "brush knife". My dad had one. I chopped a lot of brush with it as a kid. Got lost somewhere along the way. Maybe someone "borrowed" it.

I have never seen any civilian carry one either...and the other fellows generally used patience and secateurs.

Lol!!! I got a machete I bought in 1986 at the PX in Stuttgart. Some Swedish brand, flexible as hell. Been around this rock stuffed in between an Alice pack and the frame.
Even posted pics of it here many times. 100mph duct taped case over the original cloth one. Use it every once in awhile on weeds or whatever around the fenceline around the house. Use it to clear trails for getting into deer hunting areas. Something I will be doing when tree rat season starts. Trimming this year's growth off existing trails. Also use a pair of fiskars hand clippers. Once ya get a trail done. It is easy to maintain it. And deer use the trails also
I have posted numerous threads over the years per these subjects in this post with pics. And have posted pics of the dead game animals from having access to such areas per these trails enabling me to get in spots others won't go into. Even took a little lost E6 in the pitch dark one morning several yrs ago into one of my spots via a trail. Worked out good for him and good for me that morning

I got rid of the machete. My kids found it and managed to hack all the bark off one of our trees and killed it. Had to hire a guy with a bucket truck to remove the tree. If it is too thick to walk through I'll walk around.

One of the USFS boys recommended that tool. He said it was better than a machete for chopping out property line. I have to believe a bendable machete is far better for scraping big pines in preparation for paint marking.

( I served on mess duty, the cooks have a very hard job, thankless at best) Sure was glad the chow hall was open for midrats, someone had to be there cooking. I was one of Uncle Sams Misguided Children, exited as an E-4. The best chow was Quantico, OCS hall even better. Only place that came close was Camp David. Now.......the only thing Jocko "may" have shared with you was " more mashed potatoes". I never went to Ramadi throwing down cover fire, neither did you ! I'm sure going face to face with you would traumaitize me greatly !

You have to understand, officers don't go through selection or green team. They just do their tour of 2 years and go away. Some don't make it 2 years. Which is why McRaven had an axe to grind with DEVGRU, he was booted. The operators at Dam Neck are almost entirely enlisted. The only exceptions are the ones who convert to officer or CWO and they are usually put in another capacity such as running green team, training or ops. So yeah, some guys had tomahawks for a partial tour. When the desecration thing became a thing, it was stopped. Immediately. To be honest, it was too late by then. Our investigation had found out about a lot of issues that had been going on and permitted by senior leadership. After that tour, a large chunk of SEAL leadership had a week long conference where some new ground rules were put in place and a lot of senior enlisted and officer leadership were sent home or back to the Teams.
There is no professional reason to carry a tomahawk and the the unintended consequences of permitting guys to carry them is that they will try to use them or utilize them to desecrate bodies. We are not in that business whatsoever. It doesn't align with the consummate professionalism that we are held to. I will tell you for a fact, there are very, very few instances justifying you to pull your knife to take a life. We are issued and train to be experts with our long arms and assault rifles. If you need to pull your pistol, you have screwed up along with 2 or 3 members of your group. You have to understand how hard it can be just to engage a guy because everyone is so fast and smooth, they will beat you to your shot. If you go dry, there are at minimum 2 guys deep already on target ready to take that shot. During an assault, you simply don't have time or the need to pull your sidearm. By this point in your career, you can dump and load in about 2 seconds or less. We used to drill to pull your pistol when you assault weapon went dry during a double tap but you get to a point where the sidearm is just an emergency weapon. Yes there are guys who strive to get a knife kill and they will usually get one by putting themselves in danger or their Team. Or sadly, finishing a wounded combatant. Those people have something wrong in their DNA and are for the most part, weeded out. Their desire to kill a guy with their knife does not out weigh my right to life.
Navy SEALs are supposed to be professional special operators. There should never be any psychotic desire to spill blood or desecrate bodies. We do what we are trained to do without hesitation and ferocity but never blood thirsty. Even though the enemy just tried to hack off my best friends head on the top of some schitty mountain. Everyone should have tightened up and let their hatred out of the enemy on the battlefield and respected them once they were dead. If you are the type of person who let their emotions control their actions, you are in the wrong job. Unfortunately, senior leadership at that command permitted a bunch of MEN regress into immaturity. That particular squadron had many failings. They read a fictional book and took it as fact. Their squadron name was the Redmen, not the Indians as some fat turd here referenced them. The idiots went and got Apache Indian tattoos and started believing they were fawking Indians....and their leadership permitted it. No, encouraged it or turned a blind eye. Well, that BS reached the wrong ears, an admiral they tossed out of their group years prior and it was brought to an end. No one in the Navy is not and have not carried a tomahawk into battle except for 40 some days into a deployment. The tomahawks should have been meant to be a symbol or their mascot and namesake. Instead, a POS Captain was seeking inclusion into a group he knew he could never be in and brought a schitstorm into Naval Special Warfare. A lot of careers were lost and some of the offenders are now making tons of money telling lies and being giant POS.
I made my point. If anyone is wondering, I was an 18Delta, (maybe equivalent to a paramedic but a bit more), Sniper, and occasional assaulter. I tried to go dog handler but because of GWOT, I kept having to deploy or other schools. I assisted in developing the Navy SARC, Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsman, and still train the guys in the pipeline. However, I do very little in the medical side and work the shooting and electronic side getting them ready for @#$%#^ which I believe is still a classified capability. I personally do not really enjoy the medical side anymore but instruct certain aspects of it. I am proud to say that when these guys finish their training, they can perform minor surgeries in the field, put a few hot ones in an enemies ass, shoot 1k yards minimum, free fall, dive with the best and run their asses off all day long. The military is changing. The Marines are changing. Warfare is changing. Mark my words, the Marines are going to break down to platoons size and deploy with multiple small units that are spread out. Special Forces in general will be the norm of the future. You got a motivated kid that wants to serve at least 10 years? Send them to SARC school. We will make them a better human being in this world with very impressive capabilities.

Homie got his 3rd star for hanging Dhahran to mid april waiting to get on RORO ship and collect 56 bucks a day perdiem for 22 days going back to Florida and then Ftcky before going on leave. Not a bad gig for a single e6 at the time in charge of 15 Joe's whose sole purpose was to check and tighten down binder shackles on 1st Cav,s Bradley's and M1,s twice a day. And we got fed well by the squid cooks.

Ontario Knife Company one arrived with an orange plastic handle. Has an enclosed finger guard which is nice. Very heavy blade but pretty dull. Maybe dull to prevent legal issues? Little work with a file or sander will fix it up. I do not think this blade will bend and will work nicely for cutting jingweeds and branches. I like it so far and very reasonably priced. The Tramontina ones are still out for delivery.

The Tramatino's are nowhere near as thick and sturdy feeling as the OTK Co machete but they are light and sharp as hell. One is going into the camper and the other in the back of the truck. Going to order some kind of material to make a sheath for one to attach one my molle pack.
I like that the OTK handle has a hole for paracord loop and I guess if the handle falls off, I can always put a wood handle back on it. Like I said previously, the OTC is hefty and seems like the blade will last for a loooong time.

Is there still one that doesn't suck? Somebody told me the Brazilian Tramontina is actually cheap and good. I bought 2 plus paid an upgrade (6 dollars) to get the handles fitted and the blade sharpened. I will update when I get them but until then, is there a manufacturer that still makes one that won't bend when you hit a limb with it?
I sorely needed one on my last trip trying to break trail to get to water so I could fly fish last week. I had a Gerber Kukri but a limb bent the piss out of it a few years ago and I think if I ground it out, it would break upon use.

We have thick woods and brush here but If the brush is so thick that I have to swing a machete I find another route nearby and walk around it. I’ll break a few finger sized branches by hand. Breaking some small limbs by hand seems like a lot less energy than swinging a machete. I can break a small limb several feet out from the tree by hand. A machete means having to get near the trunk of a springy limb, it just seems like a lot more work.

Surveyors and timber line markers don't have the luxury of going around. But you are correct, it is better to go around if you can.
By the way, I had to do some machete work Sunday on a neglected fence repair. Swinging a machete properly must be like riding a bicycle, you don't forget how. First order of business is to get it good and sharp and then swing it held loosely in your hand so you don't get your wrist jarred on every lick. Let the sharp edge and the momentum do the cutting. Doesn't make any difference if you are going to hit with it a dozen times but a few hundred or even thousand a day makes a huge difference.
