May build "Papa Bear" as a Cheslight

...from these guys... https://www.baysidejoinery.com/

VERY ROUGH PRELIMINARY... Just thinking outloud...

"Papa Bear" will be a dedicated carpentry shop with a small guest studio above...

Had Laura work a sketch to visualize some of the elements I will be putting together...

[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

And a basic shop drawing for material take-offs and fabrication details...

I like it. Vaguely Monticello inspired?

Nice shop drawings. Did you sneeze? LOL

Always hated that, spend hours working on a set of detailed shops with a good old-fashioned # 2-1/2 pencil and a scale, then one of the bastards sneaks up on ya'.

Tater chips probably...

It is only a working (fabrication) sketch.

We won't actually be doing plans... don't need them. No permits required... No bank loan... Just a building being built by men on fair exchange Capitalism.

We ain't much on kissing the Emperor's ring round here.

Have you got enough height figured in the lower shop to put in a decent dust collector system?
Looking good.

We called our great grampa Papa Bear.

…on the inlaw’s side

He was kind of an ass hole But I ended up with many of his snap on, proto and sk tools.

Osky

6x19+/- Timber joists (primary) and 6x12 (secondary)... leaves me 9'-2" clear (bottom chord of the joist) and 10'-6" to the underside of the floor (12/4 T&G White Pine (probably)).

Not sure if I will do dust collection... probably not. Big French doors 3 O'clock and 9 O'clock and a leaf blower kinda thing.

If I set the columns on piers or Sono tubes... it be easy enough to raise the height 8"-12".

Placed the order ($12,500) an hour ago for 14k+ BF of lumber to build Papa Bear.

Unreal how low the Pro Desk at HD got bulk prices for me...

$0.43 BF on 2 x 8 x 16s SYP???

Fugg, that is unreal CHEAP...

Laura's XLS cut and paste...

[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

*$12.5k was for others hacks as well... not just the dimensional lumber.

*Oops... Couple of blanked out quantities... call it 16k BF
Posted By: marktheshark Re: Papa Bear - 10/31/23
That is cheap!!! Hope your HD actually supplies decent, straight boards! Ones around here sell alot ot absolute garbage and I try to avoid having them pick the boards, rather take the time to do it myself, but understand that would be quite impractical in your case.

Oooh doggie...

These builds sure do appreciate in value...

Just listed 6 hours ago.

Looks like a great project. Too many corners, though. Every time I lose something, it always turns up in a "corner" somewhere.

Correct Jeff...

Lots of twists and turns in the telling...

They lost 100% of everything a years or three ago to a fire... Insurance denied claim.

A bunch more stuff as well... but we are helping them come back huge... hopefully.

Even the landlord is part of the solution (i.e. rock bottom rent).

Outstanding community.

I did them a 20' x 20' cabin design just last week that can leave their shop on a bumper pull trailer (you install)... that will sell at $15k... 10" x 10" x 10'/12' columns, 6" x 19" beams (that will be another post in a few months).

Edit... anyone driving the Florida Keys can see the purple ChesLight just after the 7 mile bridge (I think I have that right).

It must get its shear strength from being octagon. A lot of openings. For a shop, I’m a fan of the clear story.

This is the center column.

The 2nd floor joists (6" x 19") bear on top of that column.

[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]

[Linked Image from i.postimg.cc]
Posted By: CashisKing Re: Papa Bear - 12/16/23
Danny asked me how much weight that column could bear...

Assuming 9k PSI compressive strength of SYP (Southern Yellow Pine)... ON AVERAGE SAMPLES TAKEN...

1.35 million pounds.

Slenderness Ratio would be maybe (pure guess) half of that... and the control criteria... SO only 675,000 pounds...

61" glue-up

No, he has no idea. He's doing all of this on a wing and a prayer.

You should stop using Google to learn things, and stick with being a fedboi.

We use a poly adhesive (https://purchaseadhesives.com/products/polyurethane-adhesive-solfre2-3161) it is moisture activated (identical to Gorilla glue). The wood is kiln dried before building the beams.

Internal blocking or EPS foam keep the XY axis very very stable.

From a L/240 or L/360 perspective these are as structural as LVLs or Lams.
