McDermitt NV/OR. It's a town of 500 that's split by the NV/OR state line. 75% Indians. They've just discovered what might be the world's biggest lithium deposit just west of town in what's called the McDermitt Cauldera. It's an ancient volcano basin, all on BLM land. LINK

So, what will happen? For starters, all the environmentalists will fight tooth and nail to prevent it being mined. They want EV's but don't want us to make batteries for them.
Next, assuming that a mine opens, there will be lots of miners. McDermitt isn't exactly the social center of either NV or OR. It's about as lost as any town in the US. I think there are only 2 or 3 motels. It will soon be home to a bunch of new brothels and casinos, at least on the NV side of town. I can guarantee that the NV side will grow a lot faster than the OR side. There's a similar situation in Wendover NV/UT. The NV side with casinos is a well to do community. The UT side is poverty.

All that's years down the road, though. First there will be years of court battles and government regulations to go through.
Speaking of EVs - you really don't want to drive one out there without a generator trailer. The charging locations are few and far between.
Daughter has jackpot roping friends in Ft McDermitt, they say don't look for any huge growth there, hold onto your real estate venture capital...mine site is only 60 miles from Winnemucca and like a lot of mining operations in Nevada, the company will commute...and McDermitt is 30 miles north of the probable mine entrance nearer Orovada. If you were to buy the gas/grub store in Orovada, then you would be in clover.
Let me guess.

Hunter Biden and Harry Reid own all the private property in a 100 mile radius. Bought it all two years ago on a "hunch".

Not any different than the illegal situation, "Not in my back yard".........
used the restroom at the casino in McDermitt many times. usually dropped a dollar in quarters in the bandit closest to the exit. think i may be ahead a couple dollars.
One thing is for sure.

None of the workers are going to come from the Oregon side.

LOL
You consider Wendover, NV to have any aspect that is "well to do"? WTH? Really?

It's all relative. Wendover is not and never will be Las Vegas.
My grandparents had a farm near Bessemer City, NC. Somewhere in the mid to late 60s a lithium mine was opened on the neighboring property. I remember that our family was visiting my grandparents on the day of the very first blast which began operations. Mining officials came to the house and warned us to stay put until the all clear siren was sounded.

That first blast was something like you’d see in a movie. The ground shook, dust and boulders the size of cars were thrown hundreds of feet into the air. Some of the smaller rocks made it to within a few hundred feet of my grandparents house. I don’t remember the explosion being too loud though. I guess because it was contained so far underground.

In the years after that first blast, Lithium bought out my grandparent’s farm and used it to pile all of the mining rubble. Where we all used to roam and play as kids, the house, barns, pastures, meadows gone… and everything is now acres and acres of land covered in a mountain of rocks, dirt, overgrown with scrub trees, bushes and briars.

My dad's 70 acre family farm was just down stream from my grandparents place, now the lithium mine, and that’s where our family lived. There was the constant sound of heavy trucks running 24 hours a day, dust and the occasional rumbling of a blast. Ever so often our creek would run water that was milky looking and the EPA would come take water samples.

Fast forward to around 1990, Lithium approached my dad about purchasing our property. By that time I was grown, married and had moved away from home. Not sure what deal he worked out but he ended up with a farm and new house just a few miles from my house. The farm where my dad grew up and I grew up is now a huge sediment lake and overgrown vegetation.
I don’t know if it’s related to the mine or not but my mom and 2 sisters all have passed away from cancer.

As far as I can see the lithium mine didn’t improve anything for anyone near the mine. Some of the other adjoining landowners were also bought out or relocated but for the most part no other benefits.

Now, with the “green energy” craze, lithium is pushing for an expansion in the area. Residents are all joining together and trying to fight the expansion. Where it ends up, who knows.
There is nothing and no-one anywhere near this McDermitt deposit who will be bothered.
I am betting that the biden crime family will follow their instructions from China, and ban all mining.
I'm betting any type of activity that squares up in the "+" column will quickly be shut down by the communist in chief and his anti-America handlers. If lithium is in their best interest somehow then it may be allowed, as long as few ordinary Americans benefit that is.
There’s no brothels in Wendover, Jackpot, or McDermott. There won’t be any either. Gotta be 50 miles inside the border for that. Nearest brothels in NE NV are in Wells. Which is just over 50 miles away from ID and UT.

The Lithium will almost certainly never be mined, simply because it is within California. Having dealt with permitting with Region 9 EPA, it’s an absolute nightmare to get anything done. The leftist wack jobs controlling CA will NEVER allow it. They would much rather have this so they can feel good about their ‘green’ selves:

It's not in CA. It's mostly in NV, overlapping into OR. Greenies in OR might try to get that part of it stopped.
From what I can tell from maps, it's located outside of any Indian reservations or wilderness study areas. It's all on plain old BLM land.

Not until a dispensary opens up. Then they might get a couple.
I wonder if the company who gets the contract will conduct drug tests. I'd really hate to work around heavy equipment operated by dopers.
I wonder what rare critters live there that nobody cared about until now....

Mining once again destroys good places in NV. This is one of my chukar hunting spots.

I hope it's a bunch. Lithium mining poisons the earth under and around it, and it requires vast areas of drying ponds. mad

Nope.

It will just wipe out the deer, antelope, chukar, and sagehen and poison the ground there permanently.
So, you like the jet fuel for safari? The pickup to haul your iron to the airport? The iron itself? Finely machined using the best cutting fluids? The finest Missouri lead projectiles? Gas to go hunt chukars? All of that comes from holes in the ground, none apparently in YOUR backyard, luvver.

A big pile of lithium within US borders is a BFD in terms of geostrategic resources. But I'd bet money there will be at least one variety of milkvetch to hang the whole thing on the ESA.

Don’t be a NIMBY. There’s still lots of good places to hunt chuckars in NV. You just gotta know where.

You are too clueless to compare apples and oranges. The pipeline isn't thousands of acres of evaporation ponds and the top layer of the soil scraped off.

I'm a native Nevadan and know about where to hunt. Mining in general is decimating those places. It's a fact. No matter. In 150-200 years it will heal up.

Yeah well guess what, I have lived there myself, worked in the industry, and hunted there too. I actually permitted and did the environmental compliance for Barrick you clueless ass. I also did the reclamation work at these places. I personally oversaw the vegetation population pre and post mining and there’s standards with all of it that have to be met. The only part you are correct about is that during mining, there isn’t wildlife hanging out in the active areas. That’s quite by accident I’m sure.

I’ve met a lot of folks like you through the years. Here you are posting away with with the products of mining, including the lithium in your cell phone. You don’t have the faintest idea where anything came from. Meat comes from the supermarket, right? If you’re a NV native, you’re from Clark county or Reno no doubt. The active footprint of mining in the state is less than 1% of the area within the state. Yet, you would have us believe that is decimating the wildlife? LOL.

I’m feeling generous so will help you with your chukar quest. Go find any number of springs along the foothills in the Great Basin. There you will also find chuckars, muleys, etc. BTW, the problem with sage grouse isn’t mining. It’s predation on their nests by mainly ravens.
It's on the Reservation. That means the indians are going to want a piece of the pie , or oppose it all together.

I can't come out against mining, too much of what supports civilization comes from mining, but I could feel a lot better about the Thacker Pass discovery if the whole premise of it wasn't based on a false narrative...the need for EV's to save the planet. Looks like sodium ion batteries are destined to make lithium obsolete in a few years anyway.
I am probably one of the few guys on here that has been over Thacker Pass going to and from Kings River...if you do have to trash a piece of real estate for waste rock, I'd say Thacker is as good a place as any. Anyway, the amended reclamation plan is proposing backfilling the pit with the spoils as they go. I think the proposed settling ponds will turn out to be a boon to wildlife in the long term.
If anybody was concerned about the Quinn River Valley or the Kings River Valley staying in a native state, they should have shut down the alfalfa industry long ago. By the way, the Injuns don't own Thacker Pass, it is BLM.

It's not on the res but the Indians call it a sacred site. To them, any place where they don't want whites becomes sacred. Their sacred land is everything between the Pacific and Atlantic and between Canada and Mexico - if they can get a way with it.

The article I read earlier made it sound like a new discovery. Apparently that's not true. Most of the permitting has already been done and construction has started. It's owned (or leased) by Lithium Nevada Corp.

@flintlock - I will be the first to say mining shouldn’t be universally allowed everywhere. But McDermitt certainly isn’t what one would consider prime real estate! We should, however, be self-sufficient regarding our natural resources just from a strategic standpoint alone and environmentally ready too. Our great leaders, however, have basically made it nearly impossible to get anything done. Trump certainly did a good job of turning up BLM and they were better for a time. This administration though, they would rather have things produced in third-world sheetholes with zero environmental protections than here where we have strong environmental protections and standards. The standards aren’t the problem. It’s the government bureaucrats who sit on things and deny them, not for scientific reasons, but for political purposes. Then there’s the environmental wackos who actually get paid by the government when they sue as a backup. There’s no repercussions either. Your only remedy is through the courts - 9th Circus.
McDermitt is owned by the Mormon Crickets i believe . ( sounds like a baseball franchise)

Thanks for the link. I’m absolutely sure a thorough Bugs and bunnies study was conducted as well as an archaeological review as part of their EIS. As you mention, the tribe hasn’t been properly bought off so are against it.

This news was a surprise.... Top two pics in the caldera, others are possibly there or possibly nearby. whistle I'm all for the lithium, we need it. Worked from Orvada for a few months back in the day. Nearby another time. There's better than average sagelands in that country. Oldschool rock blinds next to bighorn trails and sage grouse lek sites. Amply-watered rangeland, productive for livestock and wildlife bliss. Not juniperized. Hmmm. Time flys.

Not juniperized. Damn, I wish we could "unjuniperize" a bunch of territory around here.

Might have to take a trip over that way one day. Have driven the route from Winnemucca North and South numerous times, didn't know about that caldera, always wondered where some of those roads went.
