Hochul said the break in the case came around 4:20 a.m. ET Monday when the suspect drove to Charlotte’s parents home and put a ransom note in the mailbox.

“He literally drove up to the family’s mailbox assuming they were not home,” Hochul said, adding Charlotte’s parents were still at the campground searching for their daughter.

The family’s home was being monitored by state police, but the officers had been sent to another call in the area when the suspect dropped off the note. Police tested the document for fingerprints and searched law enforcement databases to see if they could find a match. LINK

Hard to tell which stories are the most accurate with the early released information but it don't make any sense that the police would watch him drop the note then let him drive away so they could spend 10 hours trying to figure out who he was.

Either way, good ending to a horrible event, but it appears it could have ended 10 hours sooner.

Slight correction: Moreau State Park is just outside Albany and could be called “Upstate” NY, but as Mart, DannyL and I who are from the real Northern NY will assure you, it ain’t got nothing to do with where we’re from.

Moreau State Park is over 30 miles north of Albany and consists of over 4000 acres. I've been there many, many times. It's only 10 minutes from my place. So glad it all ended well!
