Best - a well-stocked tool chest filled with older but quality tools sitting under an overpass.
A duffle bag full of camping gear. I was reluctant to open it fearing a severed head or something.

Worst- I accidentally left a brand new bottle jack on the shoulder of Interstate 5 after fixing a blown trailer tire. Didn't realize it until I had another blowout a few hours later.
I read that as a “brand new bottle of jack” and was thinking that must have been one stubborn tire if you had to break out the whisky!

I locked myself out of the car when I was looking at a car dealer lot. It was a 6 inch snow storm and I did not have a coat on because It was an hour trip back into the finish of second shift. No cell phones then, so I was going to walk until I found a phone booth. I went 10 yards and kicked up a coat hanger. So that was over quick.

Lol….isn’t every blown tire a decent excuse to break out a bottle of whiskey, after first calling AAA of course. 😂
Found a new Yeti 65 cooler upside down in the middle of the highway driving home a few years ago.

Opened it up and it was full of iced down beer.. smile

The fall out of the vehicle put a few scratches on the corner of the lid, but not real noticeable. Still have that chest.
I got a real nice logging chain 30 plus years ago off highway 28 in Mississippi on my way hunting. Me and another guy going opposite directions turned around at the same time. My Toyota was faster. Still have it and frequently use it.
I saw a sleeping bag, looked high quality, alongside a narrow steep road. Investigated it, dang it, there was a dead female in it. Further investigation revealed her dead male companion down in the creek. Months later cops determined the couple accepted 50Gs to set up a meth factory...but they blew the money partying. East Bay Dragons exacted vengeance. Stealing from MC gangs is hazardous...who knew?
when we was 12's, me and 2 buds picked up $300+ in cash blowing across the fox river bridge in SE Wi... sadly, most of the booty blew under the railing and floated away in the icy water... we practiced SSS... left my favorite pair of Gargoyle "Intimidator" sunglasses on the roof of my car when leaving early AM for a car show... why i hate getting up early...
Used to work with an older gentleman that upon retirement he and his wife were snowbirds. Rogue River in the summer, Phoenix in the winter. He was old school truck driver and hauled his fifth wheel everywhere. One dark night driving I-5 he pulled over to check something and unbeknownst to him she got out in her nightgown and missed connection and Gene drove off stranding her at night in her nightgown.
Was needing a step latter and driving down 40 to the beach, there it was.....a 6 ft. aluminum in perfect shape that had probably fallen off a truck. Another time, found a 2 ton jack someone had left after changing a flat......Son found a 25 foot heavy log chain off side of interstate. Got to keep your eyes open and quick on the breaks.

that's great way to get run over these days... just sayin'...
Not on the road, but near a road. Found two $20 bills while walking the dog.

Spent some time looking for more. None found.
Only thing that comes to mind of significant value is a Peter Carey custom knife. Somebody was bummed about that I bet.

My Dad picked up a perfectly good 1" drive Ingersoll Rand air impact gun laying along a road.

Lost a J. Nielson custom knife. Must have fell out of the sheath at some point.
Lost a box of hand tied flies. Turned around around and a car was driving away. Already gone.
Lost a dirt bike stand, fell out of the back of the truck going up a hill. Realized it at the gas station a mile away. Fueled up, went back. Already gone.

Found a $100 bill on two different occasions though

You at least sought out the rightful owner of the beer, right?

B and W trailer hitch 2' and 2 5/16 on the side of I-40. Looks good on the back of my F-350.

Brand new 8 lug wheel, tire, and hub assembly off somebody's trailer. It was up in the edge of the woods on I-40. I was in my car, so I left it. Drove my truck the next day and it was still there. My neighbor was very appreciative of it. I had no use for it.

Also a Yeti hopper.

A Penn 4500 spinning reel with nice rod.
I've lost more than found.
Our area growing up must have had the Johny appleseed of corn. Seems like every month there was the previous months issue of penthouse and swank tossed on the side of the road
The kids were not going to take them home.
On the way home from deer camp my FIL and buddy both lost their Stihl weedeaters and a chainsaw because they put them on the trailer and forgot to tie them down. Drove all the way back and they were gone
Lost a good fly rod one time
Found a rooftop rack with 2 kayaks strapped to it. It was pretty windy that day.

Haven't found much--a Snap On box end wrench. 9/16" on one end, 1/2" on the other. That was 45 years ago. I still have it.

Picked up a brand new Werner 4’ painters ladder a few weeks ago. Saw a ladder that was damaged badly then a couple miles another one then a third, the fourth one was unscathed. I can only imagine a truck must have left the back door open.
We need a dumpster diving thread I’ve found some schit
When I worked road construction, we did a pile of work on the Pa Turnpike, used to find piles of stuff as you can't exactly turn around and go back. Found the biggest Crescent wrench I've ever seen there, probably 3 foot long, gave it to a buddy as I'd never use it.
Posted By: Lawdwaz Re: Lost and Found On the Road - 01/20/24
I’ve found lots of great stuff…….earliest score was a truckers heavy canvas taro back in the late 70’s. A fair amount of hand tools; best of them was a Mac 3/8” drive spark plug ratchet. More recently a high quality trolling rod, reel and condom like thing for protection. $100 bill in a birthday card on my lawn on a rainy garbage day. A bunch of cell phones and three wallet's, all were returned.

Gotta be careful on the side of the road of course!

25 years ago I was heading down the gravel road to the highway, as I crested the hill I saw something fall off the trunk of the car that was turning out onto the highway. A complete 1/4" SAE snap on ratchet set, I stopped and picked it up, I still have it.

Not really a 'lost or found' story, but . . . My dad carried all his ammo to deer camp in the old lunch box he used before he retired. The season was over and he broke camp, loaded up his pickup, and headed for home. When he went to empty the pickup, he found his lunch box right where he left it, on the back bumper of his pickup. Couple of boxes of 270 and 12 ga unscathed after the 65 mile trip home. I told him he wouldn't be able to to that again if he tried.

I found a pair of Ray Bans in the sunglasses compartment on a rental car back in ‘15.

Thought about turning them in, but I figured I needed a pair of misplaced Ray Bans at least as bad as the girl at the Avis counter.

I figure it’s Karma for all the pocket knives I’ve lost.

I hope their former owner found something nice to replace them.

When I high school we lived on a corner. Our mailbox was there. While checking mail through the years found a generator . It bent the crank when it landed. By the time I put a new crank in it , I was in the hole. Never would idle or rev good. Took it to a few shops and nobody could fix it. Finally sold it for less than the crank cost. One thing that found and still have is a Case Bowie knife marked XX. I think it has a bear etched in the blade. Years later I found the sheath at a gun show.

Found an 18" pipe wrench on a blacktop last week. Found a glock 19 on a bench at the range. Not exactly on the road but close. Called a buddy on the SO and waited for him to come and get it.
I found a 20' log chain on our high line right of way. I gave it to a friend who had a bulldozer.
Last year, the day after Thanksgiving, we were driving home from CT and a metal detector fell off the roof of the car ahead of us. it skidded down the road and up against the jersey barrier on the left shoulder. No way I was going to try and retrieve it in that traffic. My brother is all the time picking up ratchet straps on the road. I told him there's a reason their there.

Years ago I commuted about 35 miles to work, much of it over country roads. On one of those roads there was a location for jump scales that were used to catch overloaded trucks trying to bypass the scales on I-5. One day, about 1/2 mile from the jump scales I saw a bundle (20 sticks) of 30 foot, 1/2" rebar. They sat there for 2 weeks until I finally picked them up with my trailer.
2 doz Dakota mallard decoys New in the box. Only a few were scuffed up. Still hunt over them.

Many years ago, one of my dad's friends was flying down a dirt road in PENN and didnt see a large trash bag in the road until it was to late. Turned out the bag was full of scrap metal. Poor guy was driving a VW Rabbit, and it tore up his front end really bad

When I was a pre-teen exploring the backroads on our bicycles, we found an unopened case of Hershey bars in the ditch. Score!
At the end of the day a Duck hunting buddy left his SKB O/U on the roof of his Jeep Wagoneer at Fish Point managed waterfowl hunting area and drove off. The next day he got a phone call from the area manager. A good samaritan came across it and turned it in at the area headquarters.

We took MIL and 12 yr old SIL on a shore fishing excursion up the Lake Huron coast from Linwood to Singing Bridge.
Couldn't find my tackle box when we got home. Think I left it at the Au Gres river mouth boat launch fishing dock. Big smelt run at Singing Bridge and one of the dippers caught a whopper brown trout. He held it up for all to see in the Coleman lantern light and a deep voice from the back of the crowd said "OK, Now put it back." DNR undercover mingling with the dippers.

Found a bloody Buck 110 folder on a two track Rifle River state game area access road.

Paddling on the Crystal River in NW Michigan with no. 1 daughter coasted over a wallet lying on the river bottom. Back paddled and she scooped it up. Full wallet with Texas drivers license, cash, and credit cards. At the take out there was a fellow resembling the license photo....saved his family vacation!

Found a banged up hog on the side of the road. Thinking it belonged to one of the farmers in the area and might have gotten out and hit by a car I checked with them but didn't belong to any of them. Called the brand inspector and he thought he knew who it belonged to and came out. We were able to get it in a trailer he had brought. Seems a person had bought it at the county fair and was taking it to a processor 80 miles away. Once he got there, looked in the trailer and found the back gate had come undone and the hog had fallen out about 20 miles in the trip. Got it returned to him. Now I always double check everything on a trailer before I drive off.

Found a large brown purse on the side of Interstate 70 at Rifle a few years ago. It had an unlocked cell phone which I used to find the owner who was 50 miles ahead of me on the interstate. They were glad to get the $6000 in cash back, they were headed for Vegas and changed drivers right where I found it.
I live by one of the business highways in America. Find lots of coolers. Was sitting in the passenger seat riding down the interstate with one of the old salesmen from work when he locked the brakes up, and did a u-turn through the ditch all in one motion. He nearly killed us to pick up a 5/8” end wrench that he saw in the other lane

Luckiest find ever was one night on our way to CO to elk hunt. Dad, myself, my best friend and dad’s best friend were all riding together having left 10 hours behind the rest of the gang with plans to drive through the night and catch them at camp at daybreak.

Pulled into the then new Loves truck stop on the east edge of Tucumcari about to piss ourselves. Ran in the store and the bathrooms were closed for cleaning at midnight. We peeled out and pulled over on the shoulder before getting back on I40 and all piled out and relieved ourselves. Got back in and I swapped into the driver’s seat so dad could climb in the back and try to sleep a little. We get about 70 miles down the road and he sits bolt upright and says, “ I don’t have my billfold”. We stopped and tore the truck apart figuring it slipped under the seats or something but couldn’t find it. The only place we’d stopped was on the shoulder back in tucumcari so we whipped around and put the hammer down heading back. Lo and behold we get back and somehow stop at the exact spot we had before and there lies his wallet exactly on the white stripe. Had his DL, CC, $1000 cash, and his CO 3rd season buck tag in it.

We were a little late getting to camp but it worked out, at noon he killed a 34” wide 7x9 nontypical buck.
Biggest_ Brand new John Deere square hay bailer
Smallest- pocket knives.

Numerous mechanic hand tools, chains, ladders, shovels, tarps, tires, fishing tackle
Dead foxes, coyotes, Bobcats, minks, racoons (all brought good money during fur seasons years ago.
Wallets, purses, some cash.

Most unusual was bloody shirt with two bullet holes in it. Found in median two miles from the scene where a female homeowner had shot a burglar. Helped convict the burglar who lived but went to a hospital for treatment two hundred miles away. GW

Couple of dogs. I'd have kept the one, but he was ecstatic when (presumable) the owner showd up. I let him take the dog, on observed behaviour- dog mostly- but owner was pretty slobbery too. Pit -mix too. Not sure about the dog.

haven't bought a baseball-type cap in decades. Wash and wear. smile.

Did find a down vest once, 30 some years ago. Still wearing it. And a 10 x 12 almost new tarp once. Worn out, thrown away now. Good tarp tho.

Anyone seen my Leatherman that I left on the PU camper bumper, and my wife was supposed to retrieve before she left for Seward., but didn't?

I lost roll of film once while on USFS trail crew. Couple months later one of the pics turned up in Alaska Magazine - and yes it was not a generic scenery shot - it was an identifiable moose in an identifiable location, in an identifiable pose. not no way reproducible.
We were doing a highway cleanup on the portion of road that runs by our development last spring. Found a nearly new 12 gauge Browning Gold shotgun. I figured it may have been stolen or possibly used in a crime so I went to the local PD and had them run the serial number. Nothing came back on it, but they confiscated it for destruction.
Found a nice Remington 700 in St Charles AR small town 180 people saw a guy putting a sign up at the only store in town he was really glad to get it back. I was driving my buddy said stop back up the guy had just left it on his tailgate.

Same thing happened to an acquaintance who found a SuperRedhawk, obviously
dumped. Everything came back clean, but the Gestopo kept it for destruction.
Barry complained to the state police commander, he assured them his office would watch to see it go for destruction.

Not fair to think they would steal.
Several got busted here for selling PSP stenciled gear on Fleabay.

Dad and a friend my age were riding US 30 one day and saw a real nice, big duffle on the shoulder. They are both scroungers, but Dave didn't want to go back. He was afraid it was dumped on purpose, maybe with a body. Dad turned anyway, and Dave reluctantly walked over and started to pick it up...and heard
"What the F are you doing, that's mine!".

He looked up and there was a Bum taking a crap in the ditch,
Dave almost took one in his jeans!
A fellow that worked for me once found a like new Browning Citori in a case in the middle of a BUSY four lane road. He stopped, put it in his car and came to work. Since I was his employer he came to me to ask what he should do with it. We had a state police post a couple miles up the road and I told him to take it there but DON'T take it inside, let them come and get it. He said they didn't seem very interested but took his information. 30 days later no one had claimed it so they called him and told him to come get it. Luckily the case was beat up but the gun was in great shape. He still has it after 25 years.
NOTHING like this ever happens to me.
When we had our business, I found a bunch of cell phones, wallets, cash and cameras folks had put down and then walked away from Got almost all of them returned to folks but some never came back for them or we had no way to know who had lost them. Still have 2 nice cameras that we held for a couple years waiting for owners to return.

A new complete set of Open/Box end wrenches in a ditch near my home, a couple gas cans and log chains. Gutting an old house found a glass jar full of old coins hidden in the wall (now when I do a Reno I put a small can of coins in the wall for a future "finder".

Saw a pretty fresh Whitetail fawn in the ditch with its leg caught in a real estate sign. Called the NY DEC about it and they sent a NY State Trooper over to shoot it. It wasn't hurt bad so My wife and I stopped him from killing it and took it 50 miles away to a wildlife rehab vet who treated it (leg was skinned up and stressed), eventually raised enough to release.

$70 in cash on a sidewalk, $80 in Silver Certificate Bills in a rolled up sock in an old dresser I bought for $10 and a money clip with $110 in it with no ID.

Bag Full Of Money Returned

In this photo taken on Thursday, May 29, 2014, Joe Cornell poses for a photo in Fresno, Calif.

(The Associated Press)

FRESNO, Calif. -- A Salvation Army worker in California is being rewarded for his decision to return a bag containing $125,000 that fell from an armored truck.

Joe Cornell tells The Fresno Bee that he found the cash Tuesday after a Brinks truck pulled away from a red light in Fresno and left the sack behind.

"I started crying and shaking," Cornell said. "Everything was going through my mind -- the good devil/bad devil thing. What to do?"

**************************

If you found $125 Grand in cash on the shoulder of the road, and nobody saw you pick it up, would you return it?
Someone in Vermont scored a free $700 in 1979 dollars in cash, in a bag with a pretty good set of tools. My 60 or 70-something 4wd Dodge pickup had a locking tool compartment on one side at the bottom, the lock failed.

Anyone on Camp Bullis in the range fan (Training Area 9?) needs to keep an eye out for a pretty good pair of Romanian optics I set down somewhere maybe 30 years ago.

Stuff found on Military bases doesn’t count as roadside finds but on Bullis things like old compasses, flashlights, ponchos and linked pieces of .30-06 blank machine gun ammo were not unusual. A friend tripped a training Claymore wire left out there and got a surprise.

On Fort Hood another bird survey guy got serious facial burns from a similar device left out, fortunately he was wearing glasses. Strangest thing I found was a live 20mm cannon shell in the woods on Fort Hood, too far back in the woods to have fallen off a vehicle. I figure some guy coming back from training found he had one more shell than their records indicated he should.

Either that or someone wanted to give the guy responsible for inventory fits.

Of course.

Egad man! Ain’t you ever seen the Twilight Zone? eek
I have found a lot of things alway keep my eyes open a lot of tools....but my brother sent him to the store to buy a case of beer he wasn't happy but went came back very happy with a case of beer a bottle of whiskey and a fist full of lotto tickets.....he found a bank envelope with $1200 in it bought the booze bought several scratch off lotto and won $5000....
100% honest reply.

I'd be darned tempted. Who isn't, often.

If I saw where it came from, I'd return it.

If it was in Brinks bag, the temptation might win.
Likely not.

I've see No Country For Old Men, Hollywood.
I still wouldn't want to be holding certain peoples money, and you never know if
you have been seen. Especially with cameras everywhere.
If there was no traffic on the road, that farther implicates you if your car is on a camera 2 miles away at the right time.

In typing this...
Take it to the Police, count it there with them, recording it.

Don't NEED $125k at the expense of conscience or piece of mind.

Hoping no one claims it.
I lost a 6’ step ladder a couple of months ago due to not strapping it to the truck. Around the same time a neighbor, down the street, placed a Redmax 550 backpack blower and Halo jump starter / air compressor on the street. The blower was leaking fuel and the Halo was missing a charging cable. I ordered a cable and repaired the leak. Now they both work like new!
Best find was a Colt Buntline 22 mag when I was 18. We parked on the side of the road to look for river access to go catfishing. We could see there had been a car wreck there recently as there was still crime scene tape hanging from a few trees and liquor bottles that had been thrown from the car. We were actually looking for some liquor when I stepped on the pistol laying in the weeds. That’s been 28 years ago, if that happened today I’d probably take it in to see if it was stolen or had been used in a crime.

I’ve lost one good fishing rod and reel, a decent Kershaw knife that I left on my bumper, and my favorite Stanley thermos that I left on the bed rail of my truck.

Thats why I would hesitate to return to LEO. I had a good friend (deceased) who was a hackensack cop for ages. Had an attic chest full of handguns and a closet full of long guns. He wasnt even a gun guy too much. He'd say you have no idea how mnay people call to turn in guns or find guns at the park, garage, road, etc.

Needless to say they dont always look for the owner too much, and dont always "destroy" them.
In nearly 45 years, working and driving over 1.5 million miles on the roads of southwest Montana, I found more bungees and tools than you could hold in a tool box.

I saw, what looked like a dollar bill blow across the road, so I stopped to pick it up, hoping it was at least a 20. It was actually a $100.00 bill. I looked around and found 2 more.

In White Sulphur Springs, Montana, I found a wallet on a newspaper box at a gas station, that had $1200.00 and all the ID and hunting license of some guy from Minnesota. I told the station manager that I would leave it at the Sheriffs office.

The biggest was a in Cody, Wyoming, where I found a check for $55,000.00. I took it inside of the gas station and asked if anyone had lost a check. Finally I found a guy that claimed he had lost it. I told him I wanted to see some kind of identification and he showed me his DL and I let him have the check. (This was after I tried to cash it at the bank and they wouldn’t give me the money)
Last post reminded me...

1960s.
Mom walked out of the Ben Franklin and found a wallet by the curb.
She picked it up and took it to the bank across the street, she didn't even open it.
The tellers opened it, found the owners info and called her. She was back in minutes, thanking Mom over and over and gave her $20. The wallet had contained hundreds.
Of 1960s dollars.

She told my Paternal Grandfather the story,
he was proud as heck.
"Mary, there wasn't enough money in that wallet to ruin your good name!"

Sunday Dinner with her extended family, she retold her story and was
immediately berated by her Mom's side. Called stupid, a fool, "Must already
have more money than you need..."

I found a briefcase in the ditch once. Picked it up and opened it, it had $250 in cash, some checks and credit cards. I tried to find the owner to no avail, then took it to the police station and turned it in. They said they'd call me when they contacted the owner. I'm still waiting, that was like 15 years ago. I suppose the cops had a great Christmas party that year.
A couple of months ago in WalMart my 12yo granddaughter found $2 in cash laying in the aisle, much to her chagrin I told her to leave it there because it wasn’t hers and some other kid might come back looking for it.

It was only $2 but that kid is already getting to be a reg’lar Scrooge.

I told her she had a choice; that $2 or a Christmas gift from me grin

When I was 14 thru 16 y/o, my dad was stationed at Pope AFB, in the middle of Ft Bragg. 1966 to 1968. Between being in Boy Scouts and then also going out hunting on base for 4 months worth of weekends, we use to find all sorts of stuff dumped out in the woods. It was during Vietnam, and there were a zillion draftees in basic training and AIT on base at any one time. Instead of humping all this ammo, sleeping bags, back packs, even a few M16s, it would just get tossed into the brush and the trainee would claim he lost it, or someone swiped it.

We would bring it to my dad, or give it to him when we were out hunting, and he would turn it in to base supply on Ft Bragg.
That was no big deal in those days, during Vietnam time. Every day occurrence. I'm sure my dad got a big thank you, especially turning in some M 16s, but he never said that to we boys.

I find stuff on the side of the highway all the time. Wife gives me grief about turnarounds and dodging traffic to collect my finds. She gladly claimed the new RayBans in the case I found on our road. Some finds include: 2 wallets with ID and cash, 48” Rigid pipe wrench which I gave to my BIL to use on his tilt bed truck hauling farm equipment, Stearns life vests, whole tool box of Craftsman sockets, ratchets, pliers, etc, 2 MagLights, Q Beam, duck decoys, rubber bungee cords,Gott 5 gal water cooler with wallet inside, numerous gas cans, pliers- several types, Snap On bit driver, boat cushions, 30’ foot ladder while on a bus route; AT&T service truck was glad to see me. I had already loaded it on the bus. New box of hinged styrofoam plates, hundreds inside, large Boker folding knife, Buck 3 blade stockman, ladder deer stand, sunglasses, one pair Oakleys. That’s all I remember offhand. I steady scan for deer and treasure.

7mm Loco I am with you. If I found the cash, and there was a wallet with the ID of a private citizen I would return the money, no question.

If it was Brinks, there would be an angel on my right shoulder and a devil on my left shoulder, in one helluva arguing match. I'm afraid the Devil would win, Brinks is a multi billion $ operation, this would be a drop in the bucket for them.

You cynical devil.

Several years ago I had a big ginseng crop on my land, which I had planted from seeds. Two hillbillies came up one September day and stole over a pound of my ginseng, dug it right up. About $1,200 worth. I had spotted their beat up old pickup on the road, and I called 911, and I went down there and accosted the 2 bumpkins as they came out of the woods with my ginseng. A minute later the deputy and Game Warden rolled up, and they arrested the two guys. I was instrumental in causing the arrest.

An hour later I went down to the jail, and the Sheriff was there and there was the big pile of my ginseng on his desk. And I said "Sheriff, yall did a fine job. I appreciate your hard work. Now I'd like my ginseng back."

He starts in with this "Sir, this is evidence in a criminal proceeding. It must be held until the case is settled, which will be several months. At that point, the Judge will decide what becomes of criminal evidence. Sometimes such evidence is destroyed in the county incinerator."

Yeah, right. Did he think I was stupid enough to believe that cops are going to burn $1,200 worth of ginseng? They are going to sell it to a ginseng broker, who probably is the Sheriff's brother. First, hillbillies stole my ginseng, and then the Sheriff stole my ginseng. I was already at war with Appalachian hillbillies, I did not want to go to war with the Sheriff. Sheriff got more power, and more guns than I do. I said "Thank you sir" and I walked out.

Let's see, late September plus two months, I bet the Sheriff's office had a great Christmas party that year.

Oh, you only found $300 ? [bleep], There was at least $5,000 in there. I tossed that along with all that cocaine when the cops were after me one night. Glad ya got it instead of the cops.

When I was about 12 or 13 years old the neighbor kid told me that his dad had planted a bunch of ginseng on the wooded hillside behind our house. This is down in western Kentucky and nobody down there has any idea what ginseng is. Everybody down there that I know has either died off or moved away.

I wouldn't be surprised if ginseng was growing all over that old hillside down there.

same here. And then the post on facebook about lost a cooler. They got it back.

Heard someone found a ski doo middle of the road in Whittier today. Lol.. I"ve heard of 4 wheelers....
One time I lost a hubcap off of the '64 Pontiac I was driving too fast around a corner on a county road. When I went beck to get it, it was leaning against a really nice 3/4 ton chain hoist down in a weedy ditch. That'll never happen again in a million years. It's pulled me out of a few ditches and mud holes through the years..
Reading these reminded me of another road treasure I came across. My wife and I took my parents out for a ride in the country and we came across a woman's purse on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. I got out to pick it up and when I bent down the purse suddenly "ran" for the weeds! At the same time 4 little boys stood up giggling down over the bank. I always wondered how long they waited there for somebody to finf that purse. We all had a good laugh. Especially my dad, he loved a good practical joke.

Driving to Copper Center one afternoon with the boss’ wife in her little SUV to go king fish for the weekend out at the lodge. We get behind a Chevy pickup pulling a 16’ trailer with a Yamaha Rhino on it. Somewhere between Eureka and Glenallen, closer to Eureka, he hits a frost heave and the Rhino unloads itself. Landed on its wheels and must have sheared the park pawl as it started to roll down the highway following its owner. After maybe 100 yards it swerved and went to the ditch and rolled to a stop unscathed.

We followed him all the way to The Hub on the east side of Glenallen honking and flashing the lights trying to get his attention with no luck. He signaled and turned North at the Y headed towards Delta. We gave up and turned south to go fish. I always wondered how long it took him to look back and realize he’d lost his buggy.

when we were little schits, we used to use old wallets stuffed with monopoly money (real dollar on the outside)... give the fishing line a tug when someone would reach for it... the greediest ones would chase it 2-3 times for realizing they were being had... lol

yesterday afternoon i was driving home from my sons saw a air nail gun stopped backed up asked a high school kid walking by to pick it up for me and hand it to me thru the window. Bostich great shape.

Norm.
Some coworkers were doing road work near Austin NV, one guy walked down the embankment to piss in some willows along the road and found a bike saddlebag, a bit further found a Harley. Sheriffs' office and NHP did a thorough search, found some bones, what they really wanted to find was the helmet.

Turns out the bike was a rental and the biker had been missing for some time. There's a Youtube video of the guy, "Ken Baker Missing Biker".
Early one morning I found a pair of Gargoyle "Intimidator" sunglasses on the side of the road in front of a gay bar......still use them today!

When I was a kid I was pretty tackle poor, I was walking down to the bayou to fish and a car went by turned and a well stocked tackle box fell off the top of the car.

Dad and I tried hard to find the owner but to no avail.

It was a good day for Paulie!!
Truck box with some tools in it, Blue Point, S-K, Snap On and some other top end tools. Watched it slide out, wasn't bolted down and tailgate of the truck was down. Looked for that truck at that intersection a few more time but never saw him.

Ratchets straps, a few other tools.

Woman's billfold. Weed, rolling papers and I.D. so I took it to the address and stuck it in the mailbox.

Life jacket.

Electric filled knife on the road from Lake Winnie to the Dam restaurant. Buddy still uses it.

Aluminum 2 wheel dolly.
Lots of things. Most feel-good was a rent check I returned to it's owner. They were frantic about losing it. Another was a wallet. Waited for the guy at McDonalds to drive back for it. Males life a little more worth living when you can encourage someone by returning their lost stuff.

Well that was real special of them taking care of that.
Likely in some cop’s closet

The PD is the last place I would have taken that gun. On what grounds did they "confiscate" it?

My boat didn’t come with a Bimini top. Somebody put the top out for bulk rubbish. I grabbed it for another boat and almost put it on Craigs List. Seaway wanted $5,000 for a top, cost me about $150 to make it work. One inch Stainless steel tubing not aluminum and the top is Sunbrella.
My brother-in-law found a brand spanking new Stihl MS261 chainsaw on the road a few miles from my house and gave it to me. It must have fallen off someone's service truck.

Unfortunately, I couldn't think of a plausible way of finding and returning it to its owner, without some smuck just lying that he's the one that lost it. So I kept it. I actually prefer my Husky XP saw better.
What if the police were only given the serial number?

Maybe that was an option. I maybe could have gone to the local Stihl dealers and told them I found a saw and if anyone contacted me with the correct serial number they could have it back. But they sell Stihl saws at an awful lot of places these days.

I don't know the serial number of any of my own saws though. Or many of my other tools for that matter.

Most recently 11 sticks of 3/16ths x 6" flat stock mild steel brand new 20' long....pretty good haul. Strung out down about 200 yards of interstate. Took over an hour to load up and boom down under the tractor I was hauling.

Did find a Dewalt 18v battery operated drill in the road. Used it until the battery wore down, decided it was a great drill so bought a charger for the battery.

Used to find lots of tools and pocket knives on the road while mowing ditches for the county. Found a 7 1/2hp Mercury outboard and box of tools in the lake when I was a kid. Got it running and used it all through high school.

Dad drove a gasoline tanker on a 200 mile round trip 6 days a week for over 30 years. The stuff he'd see almost weekly would just about put tears in his eyes but he wouldn't risk it.

Seams he did stop a few times but a trooper caught him & when trooper found out the truck was loaded with 8000 gallons of gas he flipped out. Told dad if he ever saw him parked on the side of the interstate again he better be broke drown, like, immobile or he'd throw the book at him.

The main highways from the big lakes back to the cities on Sunday afternoons are a junk mans dream. That is, if ya like coolers, life vest & boat cushions. Have seen whole boats, or what's lest of them.
