Kid from the Ft. Hall Reservation near Blackfoot, ID gets killed by a pack of Rez dogs. We used to shoot strays because of problems like this and because they harassed livestock. Now in many places, it's a felony to shoot the damned things.

Quote
BLACKFOOT, Idaho — Carlon De La Cruz Galloway was a kind, caring young man who family says loved to crack jokes, hang out with his siblings and spend time with his family.

The 19-year-old was on a walk the morning of Jan. 31 in Fort Hall, Idaho, when he was attacked and killed by a pack of 12 dogs, according to his dad, Daniel De La Cruz, and his stepmom, Linna De La Cruz.

The horrific and untimely death of their son came two days after Blackfoot police issued a news release saying they were searching for Carlon De La Cruz Galloway, who police said ran from a crime scene and was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant.

Daniel and Linna De La Cruz visited EastIdahoNews.com Monday afternoon to address their son's situation and "clear his name" following a wave of negative comments and speculation from the public.

"He wasn't a pedophile, he wasn't a murderer, he wasn't evil, he wasn't a dangerous, mean criminal," Linna says. "People see a mugshot and think the worst, but he was a good, kind kid who would have done anything for anyone."

'A good brother and amazing son'

Carlon De La Cruz Galloway attended Shoshone-Bannock Jr./Sr. High School and worked for his dad, who owns a roofing company. He loved being outside, hunting and fishing.

His sister recalled mentioning one day that she wished there was another girl in the family so they could have a spa day. The next day, Carlon De La Cruz Galloway said, "Am I going to have to be your sister today?" and the two got facials and pampered each other.

"He was protective of his sisters and protective of everybody. He wasn't a kid that was going to start trouble," Daniel De La Cruz explains. "He was a good brother and an amazing son."

Daniel and Linna De La Cruz admit their son was like any other teenager and wasn't perfect. When he was 16, he crashed his truck and took off. He was charged with felony eluding, which resulted in an outstanding warrant, according to his parents.

Juvenile records are sealed in Idaho, so EastIdahoNews.com was unable to verify the charges, but Carlon De La Cruz Galloway had no adult criminal record other than an infraction in 2021 for driving without privileges and failure to provide insurance.

"I'm not going to paint a picture of a perfect child. He had his bad days, and not to say he didn't throw a fit here and there, but overall, he was a good kid," Linna De La Cruz says.

'Carlon's gone'

Carlon De La Cruz Galloway was at a friend's house in Blackfoot on Jan. 29 when law enforcement showed up about 11 a.m. to serve a warrant for another person at the house, according to Linna and Daniel De La Cruz. When their son saw the officers, he ran.

"Probation and parole decided to go (and) check on one of their parolees at a house. Carlon happened to be there. He was still thinking he had a warrant, which he did, and when asked his name, he said, 'I'm George,' and then took off running," Daniel De La Cruz says.

Three schools were put on lockdown, and the Blackfoot Police Department issued a news release saying it was looking for Carlon De La Cruz Galloway. Officers said two people were hiding in backyards, running along railroad tracks near the Rich Street Apartments, and one of them might have had a firearm.

"Carlon didn't carry guns, and the other kid didn't have a gun either," Linna De La Cruz says. "Carlon was very safe with guns and knew guns but would only use them to go hunting. He was never violent and didn't like confrontation."

Carlon De La Cruz Galloway ended up at his deceased grandfather's home in Fort Hall. On Wednesday morning, he ate breakfast and went for a walk about 8 a.m.

A few hours later, a family member who lived nearby noticed a pack of dogs surrounding something. She yelled at the animals and realized they were attacking a person on the ground, Daniel De La Cruz says.

Fort Hall police and the FBI were contacted. Daniel De La Cruz was working when he got a call from Carlon De La Cruz Galloway's biological mother.

"She says, 'Carlon's gone.' I replied, 'Where? Where'd he go?' She said, 'No, he's gone. He's dead. He got attacked by the neighbor's dogs — a bunch of them. He's dead,'" Daniel De La Cruz says through tears.

Daniel De La Cruz jumped in his truck and rushed to the scene of the attack, about 30 to 40 yards from Carlon's grandfather's home. Investigators had placed orange cones across the property, each one marking a piece of clothing that had been ripped off Carlon De La Cruz Galloway's body.

"I didn't even recognize him. He was naked, and his body was just laid out face forward all muddy. I couldn't even tell it was a body — my son's body," Daniel De La Cruz says, breaking down.

Shoshone Bannock Tribes Fish and Game Department euthanized the wild dogs. There were 12 animals involved, according to Daniel and Linna De La Cruz, and the FBI is investigating the attack.

"Looking at my son, you could tell he fought. He had bruises on his hands and swollen knuckles. I know he had to have hit and punched," Linna De La Cruz says. "And as far away from the house as he was, even if he was screaming, nobody could have heard him."

'We love him'

Carlon De La Cruz Galloway's parents hope by speaking out, the public sees another side of their son – not a criminal in a mugshot but a young man who had his whole life ahead of him tragically cut short in a horrific attack.

"I would take his place in a heartbeat. Since I can't, I promised I'd clear his name and let everyone know who Carlon really is," Linna De La Cruz says. "Nobody deserves to die the way he did. We love him, and he will be missed by so many."

A viewing for Carlon De La Cruz Galloway was held Sunday and he will be buried Tuesday. A GoFundMe* account has been established to help pay for funeral and other expenses.

Since he passed, Carlon De La Cruz Galloway's siblings have written down memories. One brother recalls a time when he was consoling him following the death of a loved one. His words then are more poignant now:

"Notice how it rains when someone passes. That's nature's way of washing the footprints they left on this earth, but the two places it can't wash are your home and your heart. The only thing that can do that is your tears. So don't cry because they're OK now."

Happened on the Crow rez a while back.

They started shooting dogs as far as I know.
That’s ironic.

He took off running from deputy dog only to be eaten by the rez dogs.

that's one of them things that is just astonishing hard to believe. not saying I don't believe it I'm just saying it so incredible that it's hard to believe at least for somebody not from the area

One of my Indian "buddies" went on a shooting spree and eliminated a bunch of them on the rez near me, ending the plague, ironically, his wife shot him dead about two years ago now, but there aren't packs running around anymore, for now lol.

Terrible way to die! There are some people that deserve a death like that but that kid was not one of them.

They did. A while back. Go thru now and I swear there are more than before on both Rez’s.
Ffing drug culture.

I know first hand of a place heck and gone from anywhere that had four very nasty Rots…. Imagine what was going on there? One day those rots we’re seen running down an elk calf. That fall a hunter was over that country but not on Rez land when one came snarling his direction. Done deal. A few months later another set of hunters spotted the three on a hot run and they stayed low. As luck would have it the three turned and soon enough came to stumble across the two hunters. There are no more rots there.

Crazy thing on those Rez’s….. the natives kill one heckuva a lot more wild horses on that land than they do dogs, and don’t have a bit of hesitation doing it every chance they get.

That's how you have to do it.

They would pack up and come off the rez here.

Dad and Grandpa said they would get neighbors together on saddle horses and keep on them till they got as many as they could.

Unreal. Swing thru Lame Deer and see all the incapacitated people at times and all those nasty dogs roaming around them and in every direction… the school road direction as well. Time bomb waiting to go again.
As said whack horses at every opportunity, and I’m no wild horse lover so be it, but let those mutts roam around your children, elders, anyone.
Senseless.

I didn't know they were shooting horses like that.

I honestly thought they were mainly getting killed in vehicle collisions.

Amazing what people will put themselves through.

Ran over a pack of feral dogs in my Urban Cowboy Ford Truck bout 40 years ago going to pickup my wife for a date down in the barrio. Was aiming for them fuggers for over a year hauling ass down the RR frontage road and finally connected. Took a few of them out most just rolled and kept going across the tracks. Turned around and drug the dead ones off the road. Called road kill dept next day. Never seen that pack again.

My lovely bride would have probably been this kids PO if we were still in ID. My FIL is a retired professor and volunteered taught one of the tech programs at the Ft Hall HS to try and get the kids some marketable skills once they're out of High School. The problem is the kids get a big ass check from the Rez once they're 18 and instead of using it to better themselves, they go out and buy a new car/truck or use it for drugs, etc. Ft. Hall used to have the highest murder rate in the nation. I've lost track of that - maybe they still do. These reservations are an absolute mess. Too much free sheit and excess free time leads to drugs and alcohol abuse and all the accompanying problems. But it's all the white man's fault. We need to solve it by not giving them guilt money and let them stand on their own.

Like you Fats, I've managed to smoke a few of those dammed dogs over the years with the truck.

You pay blacks to stay in the ghetto and you pay Indians to stay on the rez.

At one time, Alaska had more folks killed by dogs that by bears.

An immigrant down the road a couple miles raised a pack of 16 Akitas that he let run wild.
While walking down the road, I was attacked by 4 of em but my 1911calmed the first two and the other two fled.
They later killed my neighbors old Golden Retriever so he and I got out our wolf snares and solved the problem.

Back in the mid-eighties, there was a pack living under a rural abandoned house near my hometown. Must have been 30 of them. From all accounts a lot of inbreeding. These dogs would come out from under the house and chase, snap and growl at every vehicle that drove by. I can't imagine what they would have done to someone out for a walk or a bike ride.

One day a farmer tied gunny sacks to the wheels of his truck and drove by slow. The dogs would grab a gunny sack and get their necks snapped. I can't remember how many he killed doing that but I believe the Sherriff's office took care of the rest.

A wild dog is a dangerous dog and needs to be eliminated.

But what if race does have something to do with it?

It doesn't seem to matter much with drugs however.

We have a small local Res in this community. Seemed a few of residents used to emerge every morning and go looking for a policeman to get arrested. Once in a while someone would freeze to death trying to navigate home in the subzero AM's. That generation appears to have died out now and it's a pretty quiet community.

You're probably right to a certain extent Jimbo. My MIL took one destitute indian boy in and raised him as one of her own. Problem is by then he was kinda screwed up already. Hard to reverse 14 years of damage and abuse. Aunt & Uncle adopted a girl and boy off the Rez. Those two turned out pretty well but they were just babies then. These days, they would crucify any white person doing this as robbing them of their 'heritage'. One time on the rez an indian girl come in bawling her eyes out. Her two year old brother had been 'lost'. The parents liked to drink and party and would go bury the littlest kids in a hole up to their neck so they wouldn't wander off, then go dig them out the next day (or two) when they were somewhat coherent again. The government check rolled in and they buried the boy as described. But this time they couldn't remember where they buried him! A search party was quickly organized and the boy was found later that day barely alive after being out there for 48 hrs. You can't do DFS can't do anything about it either - Rez land! Feds even passed a law to ensure Rez abuse can go about unabated. That's a hell of a way to 'raise' kids. I can go on all day about some of the crazy rez stuff that I know about. It's a messed up place and culture.

Coroner stopped by the bar for a drink before he took him to the rez. Everyone came out and said goodbye.

He was in the back of the pickup.

They are hard to help. Fetal alcohol Syndrome and other substance abuse while in utero seems to really affect impulse control.

It can manifest itself at any time too.

Pretty sad. Terrible way to go and he was too young. I ran from the cops a few times as a kid but I wasn't out hurting anyone and wasn't a thief. The kid liked to hunt and fish which is often a good sign that he still had it together a bit. Most kids I knew who were real trouble didn't have such hobbies.

I went to a queensryche concert on that res not to long ago. I was very impressed by how well the people there treated us and made us feel at home. The place was very clean and it seemed well managed. The concert was awesome.

You pay blacks to stay in the ghetto and you pay Indians to stay on the rez.

Just saying......stand on their own might mean right next door to you.

Sounds like we need to pay for all of them, including all the Rez dogs to be transplanted down by the Southern Border.

We are just letting in more fugging shigt we gotta pay for. Maybe the rez dogs and thugs can keep the numbers down...

I live 60 miles away. Don’t get me started. The dogs are the least of the problems there.

Cancel the treaties. It’ll take a half dozen generations at least, but they’d have a shot.

If I remember correctly a young lady was hunting somewhere in the Montana boondocks last year and killed a Husky roaming at large thinking it was a wolf and several members of this 24HCF were highly critical of her. She pled guilty to some bullcrap charge.

I am in sympathy with folks that have to put up with at large packs of dogs. I was running my cows next door to a 70 acre minority owned rural ghetto of 7 or 8 trailer houses that were raising Pits, Huskies, and Chows that were breeding with no control or much feeding. I still have my cows there but the dog issue has abated.

In the case at hand I'm wondering how the police euthanized those dogs. Probably by AR15 lethal injection.

They are identical environments with geographically different locations.
Race has nothing to do with what the freebie disease causes. I do not know the “acceptable” solution but I do know the cancer grows.

Osky

But what if race does have something to do with it?

It doesn't seem to matter much with drugs however.

We see the same here Jim but our percentage of non-whites is pretty low. The whites on the dole are generally the problem folks. Inof I just looked up says 2022 we're about 75.3% white, 16% or so Hispanic and only about 3% Native American. Blacks are less than 1%. So, if race entered into it, we'd be mostly crime free but we tend to come out about average with the rest of the US.

Now, I will admit, after being here for a few years now, I recognize some of the family names from the two Rezs we have in the county and the one Rancheria. And they seem to have certain members causing trouble on a fairly regular basis. Then again, I recognize some of the white names that are always showing up on the booking report too.

Just like a good work ethic seems to be something that can be instilled in kids, a life on the dole and a life of crime seems to be generational around here for some families. I've also seen it work out, not just here but other places I've lived including on a Rez, that a kid can say "F it, I don't want anything to do with the way I was raised" and they become examples for their kids and others. (wish it happened more often)

Good for you, Vern. BTDT. Sometimes going the "legal" route just flat ass doesn't work. I've had to deal with a few dog problems myself when regular legal channels were trying to turn it into a "me" problem.

We haven't had a "wild dog" pack problem here.........................yet. May not ever given the number of folks around that kill dogs running game or livestock.

But, we do have a couple of places in our 'hood that don't understand their dogs need to be under their immediate control when not contained on their property. Some folks around just think that because they live in the country they can let their dogs out while they are out feeding horses or such, when the dogs are on the other side of the house/barn from them running out into the street threatening my wife and dogs(always leashed) while they're out walking. And a couple others we really worry about, 100lb+ Anatolians or Pyrenese, that are kept fenced in small enclosures by folks that shouldn't be having any critters. They can't keep their pigs, sheep, or their smaller dog in their "fenced" yard even.

If those dogs ever get out and threaten any of us, they will cease to exist in a living state on this planet. And I think that's why those folks have kept them penned up. The other neighbors have informed them of similar feelings.

Oh, I failed to mention...................our Sheriff agrees with me and the neighbors.

This poor guy is gonna keep getting lambasted for stepping up and taking one for the team. I don't understand how it works, but he switched his vote to NO so that it could be brought back up for another vote next week when Steve Scalise is expected back from cancer treatments, and then they will have the necessary votes supposedly. Something about the numbers, and his switching to a NO vote changed it so another vote can be taken whenever they're ready without going through the whole process leading up to it, all over again.

I have spent a lot of time on a couple reservations in the last 5-6 years. In towns, afoot, around a bunch of people and a bunch of dogs.

Rez dogs around here are usually pretty decent. They are pretty submissive because people there have zero hesitation to lash out at them whether they deserve it or not. So it is rare that the dogs pack up around the towns and get aggressive because folks there will beat a dog or kill a dog in a heartbeat.

But... But when it does happen, the packs are pretty dang dangerous.

Occasionally on the rez, an announcement is made that they is going to be a purge. They did it after the fatality on the N Cheyenne rez. Tribal folks will go out and gather up and kill every loose dog they find. Giving folks a chance to contain their dog or at least get a collar on them. Usually, a collared dog would be given a pass. Because of this, pre-purge, some of the local rescues go out and collar every dog they can get their hands on.

It is sad. But it is the culture there and you see the same thing in how they raise (and I use that term very loosely) their kids. No lines to stay in, no discipline, no responsibility.

Didn't know that about the collars.

Wolf snares huh? Dang wolves get thick and a guy like you steps up to save the local canines, but to no avail.
Good of you to try however.

I was on a crane barge, locked in by ice at Barrow back in the 70's, stuck there for a couple weeks. Walked into town a couple times for something to do.
I was absolutely horrified at the number of kids bearing facial scars from dog attacks. Apparently the dogs go for exposed skin...which most times is the face.
No shortages of dogs in Barrow for sure.
