Today I noticed one of those cranes in front of my house. I figured the town was trimming my palm tree, and thought nothing more of it. Went out to the front yard this evening after dark, and my entire front yard is lit up bright. They installed a friggin powerful street light on the power pole. That lovely darkness out front, from which to star gaze at night, is now gone. I can hardly make out a star or planet now. SOBs!

I'm tempted to get out a .22 with a scope and take care if it.

Could this be a cause of action, interfering with someone's enjoyment of their property?
.177 pellet......just sayin'.
Pellet rifle.

That’s what BB guns are for!
Is the light bulletproof? Lots of vandalism these days! Do it from half a block down the street.
No DNA on shotgun pellets.

If this was done by the town, I know the Mayor well, and will give him a call.
They make lights that are directional that cast the light straight down. They have one on my street at the intersection.

Check with the town, but sometimes the power companies own the street lights, because they own the poles, and it's part of a proffered agreement that they install and maintain lights.
It’s for “your safety”. 😉

It’s not easy seeing a mob of Haitians in a pitch black neighborhood so they’re simply trying to shine a light on those people in your neighborhood who might be forced to defend themselves against the invading hordes…to protect the invaders.
No back yard from which to look at stars ?

They probably read your stance on the Ann Coulter thread and are retaliating.

Lame. Very lame.

If the pole is in the ROW which it probably is, you cant do squat.
Most likely nothing can be done about having the light there, but you can do something about the type of light it is. I'd start local and be nice. Escalate as needed.

That's a good point, I forgot about dark sky compliance in some states as being a requirement. They may have to shield the lighting by code and just haven't.
This has to be a joke.
You apparently don't leave the house much....so what's the big deal?

I was sure this was going to be about a drive-by shooting, by "norwegians"

Aces is right, think of it as city-subsidized nocturnal kill-zone.
Laugh out loud if they did that to me out here it would be like 15 miles before the light would hit my eyes
You could ask them, to put a lower watt bulb in the streetlight.
I would take a nice 357 and shoot at it until it went out or the sun came up…

The joys of city life, eh?

It would seem as though the SSS rule could apply here. You wouldn’t have to worry about S #2, but you’ve already screwed up S #3.

It depends on the state and local governments but some cities have light trespass laws and lighting ordinances.

Nice Colt for the purpose, shrap
If it's a modern multi-bulb LED, I am not sue a pellet gun will work on them.
My girlfriend owns a nice big house in the suburbs of north Atlanta. One evening I went upstairs to read my book, and the room was filled with bright light. They had installed a street light on the telephone pole out front.

What a nuisance.
I would make a formal complaint to whomever was elected in the last election and his team... if it bothered me enough to shoot.

As a minimum, I would demand a shield in your direction.

Claim PTSD (or whatever)... Go all Karen and chit as needed.
The light was installed so when “they” come to get you, they’ll have good lighting for it. Better have your attorney on speed dial……

I go in the opposite direction

I pay $7 a month to have a street light out here in the burbs. Connecting neighbors appreciated it at the time, all of us had small kids when I got it.

We pay a small monthly fee also to have one in our front circle drive.

At the least it would seem to make surveillance somewhat simpler.

If it's out streetside - doesn't that simply light THEM up as targets for the guy in the house, sitting there in the dark?
Posted By: Grumman Re: MFers Lit Up My Front Yard - 03/15/24
A town near me has been putting them in. They cast a weird purple/ black light hue on all the yards. They suck.
It wasn’t random and light poles ain’t what they used to be. Think cameras and directional microphones….

You’ve attracted their attention.
Posted By: beretzs Re: MFers Lit Up My Front Yard - 03/15/24
Might be a surveillance pole cam as well if no one asked for a light. They may take it down when they’re done with the job.

Funny story, but I was trained by DHS to tap into power and put cams up on them probably 12-14 years ago. They were one of the main ways to watch suspected places both overseas and at home. We were more interested in terrorism or espionage but law enforcement uses the [bleep] out of them. They used to get the same complaints as that post. Folks would call after we'd put them up complaining about the light. Eventually when the operation was done we'd take it down and the residents thought they really had some say.

No doubt.

When taking out bothersome street lamps it’s important to stay cool and classy.

Exactly. Brain reading technology has really advanced too so make sure to keep tinfoil on your head.
I've got one on the telephone pole in front of my house. I like it. When the wife comes home after dark it's great. Everything is lit up----nothing to trip her in the driveway, no one hiding in bushes, she can find the key for the dead bolt. Plus someone else is paying for it-----I don't have to use the porch light.
It's called a choice of living in town!!
Does your plate carrier reflect badly?

It’s no joke. It’s everywhere. Your TV watches you. Your phone watches you. The gas station monitor watches you. It’s unavoidable. They know everything. Facial recognition on your phone is just a front. It’s actually a deep brain scan. That phone isn’t recognizing your facial features - it’s reading right through your eye; traversing the ocular nerve; and recording all your thoughts

Exactly. Most towns, it’s a public process to put up street lights. That includes notification of all property owners affected, a public comment period, and a public hearing on the issue where planning a zoning committee will vote on it.

Yeah, I won't have to use the porch light either now, but I liked it better when I was in control of when it was dark and when it was bright out there. I have a security flood light over the carport which automatically flips on if it senses motion, but it can be turned off by me as well, should I wish. Same in the backyard. I miss the control over the darkness/brightness out there.

Given the cost of new LED streetlights, it would probably be a felony.

I’d think perhaps IDF or Mossad if no notice.

Pellet to the sensor, not the light. If so inclined.

I knew a guy that got busted for operating a criminal enterprise that way. Apparently the state/fed got a warrant to put a surveillance camera on a power pole across the street from his house. They done the whole utility worker schitck so no one would pay any attention.
It worked.

Btw, in Florida shooting a led street light would be a felony. And since you asked about it on the internet, I would avoid shooting it.

Request a more directional bulb...
I have seen people spray point the side of ground based lamps so the don't shine in the window.

Unusually virulent Anti-Semitism is on full display on this forum by a few members. You can bet they have been noticed.

The JDL is the U.S. version of the Irgun or Stern Gang and has been driven undercover but they are still active.
You think tha light's bad, you've heard about the fluoride in the water, right? !

Yes. I've been lucky enough to have never lived where the tap water is fluoridated. In the small town I live in now (and for more than 20 years), every time the Fluoride people come and do a presentation at a Town Hall meeting, they get booed down, and lose in a landslide. Folks here are Fluoride-wise.

You know it's a byproduct of aluminum smelting, right? If they didn't sell it to municipalities to put in the public water supply, they'd have to pay big money to dispose of it as a toxic waste substance per EPA regulations, which is what motivated them to sponsor all the research showing that it was like iodine in table salt, i.e., an additive that's a boon for public health instead of a toxic waste product.

Yep. They sell billions of dollars worth to municipalities.

This is also how we ended up with Alzheimers causing aluminum in deodorant. The aluminum industry was trying to come up with a use for scrap, and they figured by grinding it into micro particles and selling it to P&G to embed in deodorant, they could increase profits.
You don't like lights, you'd best not live in town.
For the guy who has a shower gun and one in every room in the house and you didn't go out and investigate an afternoon of racket in your front yard? Off day?

I live "in town" about like Andy Taylor lived in town on the show, i.e., just north of a one traffic light town.

Have you ever noticed them big ole yard lights that every farmer and most acreage owners have. Most are lit up like a brick sh*t house in the fog.
