Cult of the UPS retirees?
Posted By: Teal Re: I Joined a Cult....... - 03/27/24
Liked em when they came out. At a loss as to why Toyota stopped making them.

That said - I don't believe it's materially better than a 4Runner - which might be why Toyota stopped? Dunno.

Dig the color and condition.

(When I bought my Taco TRD - I found the TRD ball shifter off a 13? FJ fits the Taco. Took the big padded leather deal off, screwed on the FJ shift knob. Techs at dealership love it and always ask where I got a TRD knob for it. It's like a pool ball, matches the color and has the shift pattern etched in it)

They just never were a big seller.

They only made 222,029 in the 8 years of production in the US from 2007 through 2014, with half being in the first year.

For comparison, GM and Ford made over 750,000 each of half tons in 2014 alone.
Is it a Toyota cult or FJ cult? If the former, glad to have you. All are welcome...

Maybe when they can make something that will last. They've got the technology, manpower and equipment. It's obvious they just don't want to do it.

Thanks Mike, I sold my "never gonna sell truck", with the idea I would replace it with a FJ.

Not sure that I could've done what you did.

Driving with the blind spot cult. Had one, ok rig, nothing like my 77 FJ. Would never buy another, not enough room.

Regular cab pickups are becoming unicorns. I know for the Tacomas 2014 was the last year. I’ve always preferred them, they just look like a truck to me.

That is the one negative I heard about this - pretty blind to the sides.

I liked mine, except when driving down a concrete highway - 290 miles of the thud thud running over the cut/pressure cracks on 44 in Missouri were enough to drive you insane.
Nice looking vehicle OP. I’ve always thought that the FJ’s were kind of cool. Last that I knew Toyota still manufactures FJ’s in limited quantities for overseas markets.

I have a 2014 Tacoma regular cab, I’ll keep it forever.

Nope - no longer. Was a 1997 I bought with my enlistment bonus. Cavender Toyota in San Antonio. I gave that truck up in 2014 or so? 200k on it - sold it.

Cameras for this boomer. Leave those mirrors for the younger group, restoring our worn out pickups!

Dang, pretty truck!

Not sure that I could've done what you did.

This was my "Always wanted a regular cab, shortbox, 4x4".

Bought it new 10 years ago, stored winters, and only had 23,000 miles on it.

Absolutely perfect condition.

Sad to see it go....life goes on.

Last summer I had this shortbox also, and sold it too:

Then I bought this one:

Then I sold the GMC 3 months ago, and bought the FJ a couple weeks ago.

The only constant is change I guess.

Funny tidbit, my last five vehicles have all been 2014's........

I took off all 3 headrest from the back seats for a little more view out the back.

Room was not an issue for me. I folded down the seats & built 3 full width & length shelves for the shooting bench, guns, and gear.

Thanks, I always thought they were cool as well, but never really considered one in the past.

I actually was thinking about any ol' SUV that I could get decent gas mileage with a little rust that I could drive in the salt & not GAS.

Once I decided that wasn't me, I went into FJ mode.

I spent over 3 months shopping for the right one, and finally found this one.

2014 from Arizona with 97500 miles on the clock. Frame & under carriage is pristine.

FJ Cruisers were made until December of 2022.

Everybody seemed to like the FJ except with their pocket books. They had a hot 1st year and then sales dropped way off and never came back. Toyota finally gave up on them.

These FJ are actually pretty rad. Thought about getting one as well, but they dont give them away.

Like I said, half of their total US production was in their 1st year in 2007.

2008 they sold 28,688, followed by the big economy crash that fall that they never recovered from.

Subsequent years never exceeded 15,00 units per year.

On the plus side, they have one of the best resale values out there.

Thanks Scott, they definitely have the cool factor that the cookie cutter SUV's out there will never have.

Last year, when I was considering selling the shortbox, I talked to a buddy telling him I was looking at FJ's.

Little did I know he was looking at them as well, and he bought a real nice 2009 a week or so later.

The Scamp would look skookem behind the FJ, & it's rated at 4700 lbs.

Fat chance on pulling a house of any size behind though, or I'll find the guy that leaves the light on instead.....

I bought one in 2012. It took a little getting used to with the small windows, but it really grew on me. I didn't think I would ever sell it. It had some really good moves as far as 4 wheel drive was concerned, along with low range gearing. It had enough power to pull my 21" boat with no problem at all. I'm 6'4" and had plenty of head room too.

Only complaint I had with it was that when that almost flat windshield got hit by even the smallest bug it sounded like a brick had hit it. I could drive it one night and the windshield had to be cleaned the next morning. That flat windshield could kill more bugs in one night time drive than Orkin could kill all year.

I decided after I had had the FJ for about 7 years to get a truck. I was fully intending to keep the FJ but the dealer that was selling me the truck made me an offer for the FJ that I'd have to have been crazy to turn down. I wish now that I had turned him down...I'd love to have it back.

Funny tidbit, my last five vehicles have all been 2014's........

My last shortbox was a 95 Chevy Cheyenne
5spd, crank windows, 40/20/40 seats, vinyl floors
A/C was about the only extra
Was in EC when sold with 75K miles and started kicking myself within a week or so of doing it.

I was looking & shopping for six months, good ones still bring good money.

I drove mine 200 miles home, gassed up when I left, & again at home, 21.3 MPG......

Probably getting hard to find one low miles. I know a Toyota goes forever but still, eventually that comes due...

You'll run across a super low mileage one out there, and asking is over 40G's. Several over 50.....

I thought maybe you started to wear a red hat.
I've wanted one quite a while. Ultimately ended up finding a 97 four door Tahoe with only 57K miles on it.

It's been my daily for about 6 months now.

Being a GM fan, I started out looking at Tahoes, then Explorers for the better gas mileage, but ultimately chased & scored what I really wanted.

Having the Silverado in the garage, I could be patient for the right one to pop up. I drug my feet on several, so I didn't linger on this one.
If you ever think about Explorers again, make sure you check the paint for peeling on the front edge of the hood.
Posted By: memtb Re: I Joined a Cult....... - 03/28/24
I liked them, though questioned the color combo that Toyota used on them.

I’m guess’n that they had the usual Toyota quality and have too wondered why Toyota discontinued them! memtb
