what are the top three cartridges that you actually use, not just like. also, action preference would be desired.

Wow, all over place. lots of 22lr and 30-06s and more 358s than I expected. 30 cal mags not a surprise. my guess, if we looked at gunshop sales, the 270, 30-06 and 243 would lead the pack. interesting group. I wonder how many usrac/browning, ruger, savage and remington reps/marketing types look at this site? they may learn something.

it's pretty clear that the users of this site do not represent the general buying public, no surprise there. going into this "informal poll", I knew result would not be typical of the "average hunter" as this site is frequented by the "highly read/highly practiced" rifle shooter. Interesting results so far.
Hmmm, define "use" -- do you want the ones we carry afield the most, or the ones we actually fire?

Now you say hunt with. In the original post you said use.
257Bob,
This ain't no easy answer if you were shooting for a long time.
My preferences were different 10 years ago,20years ago and 40 years ago.

To clarify my previous -- do you want the ones we like best based on hunting and actually shooting something, or the ones we like hunting with even if we haven't shot anything with them?

For me those are quite different lists, sadly ...

All SUCKS based, but you knowed that......................
That's an interesting question. Most used would be, oddly enough, .444 Marlin, .32 WCF and .270 Winchester. Naturally, the first two are in lever actions, and the .270 is in a Winchester Featherweight Classic which I purchased shortly after they brought back the claw extractor and CRF. I am a big fan of the .30-06 too. All boring choices, I know. No hotrods in there. I do like the .338 Win Mag (though never actually "used" one), but even that's boring by today's standards, I guess.
1.) Browning Trombone - 22 LR (made in 1948) - iron sights
2.) Browning Eclipse M1000 - 300 WinMag - Leupold 3-9X40 scope.
3.) Tikka 30-06 (older version) - Bushnell 3-9X40 scope.

All of which are tack drivers, if I do my part.

Franke I'm surprised, out of the millions of 30-30's out there somewhere you are the only one that even mentioned it. Is everyone too embarassed to admit it? The 30-30 represents, to me anyway, my BIGBORE, after my 6MM and 22LR.

JustMe,
Yes,I'm a little surprised, too. I think that you said it right, that it is too bland a cartridge, and too old a rifle;it's just not cool.

Although over the years I've hunted the 30-06 would probably replace the 340 and the 45-70, 45 Colt, 358 Win, 223 all have to be considered toward the front depending on how one looks at it. The 30-30 and 22 take turns in the scabbard depending on what I anticipate my be the extra need for the day. The 22, of course actually gets fired a lot more often at game while the 30-30 just plain gets hunted with a lot. The 340 is my moose gun while the 7mm-08 is the ordinary stuff gun ( caribou and fur). With a one moose per year limit and a limit of five caribou per day (when they are here, of course - which they haven't been for several years now <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> ) it seems obvious which would of them would get used for taking game more often.
I think these get shot the most:

.22WRM Winchester 94-22M

.22-250 Ruger M77VMT

.243 Win. Ruger #1

They don't get hunted the most.

That would be:

.243 Win. Ruger #1 RSI

.308 Win. Sako Forester

7MM RM Ruger #1B
7mm rem mag
22 rimfire

2. Weatherby Ultralight- .25/06

3.Weatherby Ultralight- .338/06

These are the main RIFLES I hunt w/. I also use the .22 rimfire and the 12 gauge quite a bit. Jim....
Interesting results- here's mine: 1) 30-06, out of the ugliest old Mauser you ever saw. (The guys at camp say it looks like a piece of driftwood. 2) .300 Savage. Still my sentimental favorite. 3) The good ol' .22 long rifle, 'cause it's cheap to shoot, and is a great training tool for my kids.
For Deer, I use my .270 about 60% of the time and my .308
40% of the time.
For elk/ moose I choose my .338.( I plan to use my 45/70 again some day for moose)
For antelope/mule deer in the wide open prairies my .300 Wby.
257Bob,
A .22 RF for small game, fun, ect. , a .223 Rem. for small game, some paperwork and varmints( although it sees little use), and a .375AI for all of my big game hunting, some plinking and varmint hunting. -memtb

.22LR, .22 MAG, .223, with 8x57, just missing 3rd. place.
.17 HMR and .223 Rem for Groundsquirrels and predators,
.257 Weatherby Magnum for deer and antelope.
Most shot...

.38/.357 (I count 'em as one) What a great cartridge combo! Can use 'em in anything from a 2" snubby revolver on up. Yet out of a rifle barrel the .357 magnum shines and will handle anything from home invasions to whitetailed deer. The various .357 leverguns are a near-perfect mix of size, weight and firepower IMHO. I love my little Marlin.

.22LR Who can live without one?

.30-30 The politically correct assault rifle, works good on deer and such too.

22 LR, 257 Roberts, 22-250. Unless 12 gauge is considered a cartridge, that would displace the Roberts, since I shoot at more birds than deer.
.300 Win Mag.
.270 Win
.45-70
.454 Casull

All great, but the 300 Mag can do it all for all N.American game.

Just my opinion.
