I would offer my ranch as a meeting place but I don't think that would work as it is about a two hour drive from Eureka (but only 33 miles). That would mean an overnight campout.
There are plenty of Brew Pubs. Also if we have enough we could charter the Madakat for an afternoon cruise on Humboldt Bay.

I've never been there either, mainly because the commercial they used to run at 1 AM on the weekends featured women who bore a striking resemblance to Danny DeVito.
By "esoteric" you mean? I don't have anything out of the ordinary in handguns but I do have a very esoteric rifle in .17HMR.

XP's are awesome, but the 35 Remington isn't the optimal round for that gun. You should try shooting my 7mm BR XP one day. Very little recoil (less than a 357), and very little muzzle blast.

Is your 44 a ten inch or a Super 14? The 10 inch 44 Magnum is my favorite T/C set up.
If you want a 30/30 barrel, let me know what you're after (blued or stainless, what length barrel, ect) and I'll find some for you online. Everyone should own a 30/30 handgun. Mine is a Pachmayr Dominator. With 125 grain bullets, it's ballistics are very similar to the 6.5 JDJ.

I'm thinking Woodley Island Marina would be the place to meet. They have very good food at a reasonable price. IMO their fish is the best in the County and they have a full bar.

I think that's the best idea that's been floated so far. I haven't been there since I was about 4 years old. I remember the waitress sitting a small silver serving dish on the table. It had what appeared to be vanilla ice cream in it. When nobody was watching, I snuck my spoon over and got a nice dallop of it, and took a bite of it. I nudged my Dad in the ribs and said, "Dad, there's something wrong with that ice cream."
He just gave me that look (you know which one), and said "Well, that's because it's butter."
Went over there today and checked it out. They have a semi-private room that can easily accommodate us. The food is good, plentiful, and cheap. They serve beer and wine and even offer us old farts a 10% discount. It is a very interesting place with a lot of history. There is a small maritime museum in the parking lot.

Nope, never got around to joining. When I just have to shoot and don't feel like driving up to Simpson, I just pay the $5 non-member fee and shoot. Considering I've only shot there around 3 times in my entire life, I think it's more economical that way.
I dropped out some years ago. I guess if anyone wants to shoot we can point them in the right direction. It is a nice range with concrete benches and a pistol range. 100 & 200 yards.

Howdy Jim, My Grandpa used to eat at the Cookhouse on a regular basis too. That was back in the days before they put the highway around the bay, and you had to cross on a ferry. He worked for Georgia Pacific IIRC. I know my father did later.
If you are headed from Eureka and going north through Samoa to Arcata, the rifle range is just before you get to the mill and the railroad crossing. It's just a small place right off the beach.
Brian , I have often read your post on the Fire and I hear you talk about places that are familiar to me . When my dad worked at the plant we lived in a company house one of 4 that were not in the Samoa village itself . The 4 houses were right where the bridge from Eureka touches down on the Samoa side . There used to be a railroad Roundhouse there. My stomping grounds.When I was in the lower grades at school the High School kids had to take the ferry to Eureka High School . The year before I finished grade 8 they started sending the high schoolers to Arcata . I was sure glad of that . It's good to here from home , Jim

I grew up about 3 blocks from there and used to eat there all the time. The food is really good. If you've never eaten there before, check it out.

You know, I had gone almost a week without thinking of that little twirp. Every time someone mentions his name, I remember that positively disgusting video of his that nearly made me vomit.
I could bring you some sushi and sashimi so you wouldn't have to eat all that greasy fried chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy and boiled vegetables and fresh baked bread and those terrible homemade pies and icecream they serve. I'm here to help. No problem.
I think everything is together just fine. Besides, if we get our fingers all greased up, it will make it easier to polish any toys lurking in the parking lot or at the range if anybody decides to go there. Will also aid in identifying the finger prints left on any of Brian's entertainment?

T. Great Razooly was at one of the gun shows in Eureka a while back accompanied by one of his girls. It was not a pretty sight.
I was there. He was wearing a white silk shirt, IIRC.
I remember the first time I ever saw that guy. I was at McDonalds with my Dad, eating lunch. We see this red convertable pull up, and Razooly gets out all dressed up with this equally dressed up skank that looked like something out of a really bad porno movie. They waltz in there, and they were acting like they were VIP guests at the swankiest resturant in Manhattan. My Dad and I looked at each other and went, "Who the [bleep] are these people?"
About a year later, he popped up on TV when they were trying to keep him from putting in the Tip Top club. Came to find out later that he was a big time pot grower out of Blocksburg, and most of his business ventures were/are used to cover his tracks with the IRS. I've driven by his place in Blocksburg before, and it's as white trash as it gets.
Remember when he ran for mayor of Eureka, and Bruce Wagner was his campaign manager? Good times.

It was a really good time meeting everybody and I really enjoyed our time together. I am definitely ready to make another trip to the coast anytime we can all get together.
The place is 33 miles east of Eureka (12 miles as the crow flies) over a well maintained mostly gravel county road.
There are no services after Eureka, cell phone is spotty at best, we do have satellite internet at the cabin.
Driving time is a little less than two hours through beautiful country.
Logging trucks traverse the road regularly and they do get up a full head of steam.
I am no expert on RVs but wouldn't bring a monster. People have brought full size cab over campers with no problem.
There are four ranges: rifle out to 300yds with a one station benchrest. Pistol with metal targets. Black powder with metal targets. Benchrest on front deck shooting across the lake 212yds to metaltargets.
There is a six acre lake with an over abundance of small bass, bluegill, catfish, etc. I am of the "hook and cook" school. If you want to catch and release release them where the bear can eat them. I'm trying to reduce the population.
There are some very pleasant campsites serviced by two outhouses. We have plenty of fresh water and firewood.
When we have the final list settled I'll PM detailed directions.

Good idea bring your old toys and trade for new toys. When we get closer we can decide on what to bring for provisions. One thing for sure; if it isn't there you won't run to the corner store. Closest one is Three Corners Market.

There's a lot that goes into calling in coyotes. You usually need to do it at dawn, and it needs to be a still morning so they can hear the call from a distance. If they can hear the call, they'll come to it. You have to be paitent and completley still while calling. Unless one is right on top of you, it might take awhile. Also, you usually want to work the volume up slowly, whether you are using a mouth call or an electronic one. If you start out at full volume, you risk scaring off anything that's within 100-200 yards of you, as they will know something is up.

It's most likely Jayce Comfort he's talking about. He's a gov't hunter and works most of the big time ranches in the area. He killed so many coyotes on the Russ ranch on Horse Mountain that you can hardly find any droppings up there anymore, let alone a coyote to shoot. He wiped them out with traps and poison - he killed something like 36 in one night once up there.
He's probably hitting them pretty hard on the Rice ranch, hence the reason they are a hard to call in. They get wise to it very fast. If one gets called in and either is shot at or sees his buddy get shot, they become very wary of coming into a distress call.

I guess the Mountainpussies are taking over where the Coyotes left off. I've seen a number of them but of course I'd never shoot one because they are protected and who would ever want to harm one of those sweet cuddly little things?

If you are seeing them randomly on the road, you should be able to call one in. Remember, there's a new crop of pups every year, and it takes them awhile to smarten up. If they hear the call, they'll come a runnin.

They are definetly becoming a problem. At one time, it was big news if you even caught a glimpse of one in this area. Now people see them on a regular basis. I've seen several over the last several years, either while hiking or deer hunting. For every one you see, there's a lot more that you never see.
I will let you know a little later on but will be there if I am in the area. The wife and I are supposed to head back down to Ventura to spend a little time with he mom. She is now in a 24-7 care home. I met a bud or mine today and he invited me to a yote shoot on a private ranch he has exclusive access to just outside Santa Barbara. I need to start buying and swaging brass ammo as there is no lead allowed down there. The Condors. I remember seeing them as a kid growing up on the Sespe and Frazier.
I believe I was on your ranch a few years ago to photograph a wedding and family gathering which included, the Westfalls, Rice and Hunt families. If it is the same ranch on the Lake there off of 36 I am way envious. That place is something to behold and yes indeed LOTS OF BEAR.

I'll take it you're refering to digger squirrels, in which case you won't be seeing them until it warms up a bit more. They're probably just now comimg out of their dens, or within the next week or two. Gray squirrels should be out and about though, particularly this time of the year.
Gray squirrels are not rare but they are not plentiful. I suppose you might bag a dozen a day if you hunted with Patience. I can fix you up with her if you would like.

I will take you up on that offer sir. Gray squirrels are my favorite game to hunt, and as table fare I find them only second to grouse.
I've used damn near everything for gray squirrels. My all time favorite is the one I cut my teeth on, an ancient Savage 24 in 22 LR over 410 with a Williams peep sight. Another I've used quite a bit is an Anschutz 164 in 22 Magnum with a 2.5-8x scope on it. These days though, I usually tote a 22 Short (either a Browning takedown with a 4x Redfield or an old Winchester 74 with a Weaver K4) or some sort of rimfire handgun. I need to have Grundman's tap my 8 3/8 inch S&W Model 48 so I can stick a scope on it. That will probably be my main squirrel gun this season.
I've killed a bunch of squirrels over the last few years with this. It's an Italian made combo gun, 12 guage over 5.6x52R (22 Savage Hi-Power).
I've cooked them a variety of different ways, and they're all good. You can do the old boil them and brown them routine, although I don't particularly care for that. I like to either quarter them and pan fry them, bake them like chicken, or pan broiled in the oven. The latter is probably the easiest way to cook them. I usually serve them with either potatoes or white rice, occasionaly both. Gravy goes well with them, but my skills in that department are seriously lacking. Some friends of mine in the south like to boil the squirrel, pick the meat off the bones, then add it to sauteed onions and a few other things I forget at the moment, and then serve that over rice. An old friend of the family likes Top Ramen with his squirrels.
I've never, ever cooked on a wood stove before. I'm more than willing to try it out, provided you coach me on it. Last time I cooked with wood heat was when I used to roast hot dogs and marshmellows over the campfire as a kid, and I even managed to screw that up a time or two.

Interesting. I'm assuming you can't really regulate the heat then? What I'm getting at is, if you had something that needed to be cooked at medium temps for a long period of time (like a stew) versus something that needed to be cooked at high temps quickly (scrambled eggs or the like), how would you do it? I'm assuming you'd pretty much have to have a rip roaring fire in the stove to have the equivelent of an electric range set at medium heat?
Also, have you ever cooked with a Dutch oven?

One thing to consider; a wood stove uses a prodigious amount of wood. I have a large stack of fir and a large stack of black oak all bucked and split to stove length. They will both be gone at the end of the season.
Also you can cook directly on the stove top. I fry eggs, bacon and hashbrowns on the stove top, also pancakes. I sear steaks on the hot top before throwing them on the barby.

I didn't realize it had ports - for some reason I was thinking of it as something like a wood stove heater, where you just have a flat surface on top. I understand it a little better now - I've seen a wood cook stove before, but it was a long time ago. Pretty sure I've never seen one in action.

So you're using the top of the stove like a griddle? That's pretty neat. Ever tried making burritos on your wood stove? I would think that would be one of the easiest dishes to make on it.
I always start with fir (biscuit wood) to get thing going then settle into the black oak. If I've slacked off a bit and need more quick heat it's back to the fir.
When I lived in Lake County there was plenty of manzanita. Manzanita is by far the best cooking wood I have ever used, the small pieces will just about melt your stove and the big pieces will hold a long, steady heat. I used to make charcoal out of it. I used the charcoal in my forge to make forged steaks. You haven't lived 'till you've had a Forged Steak.

My grandfather loved shooting squirrel and rabbit...I have no clue how many he ever took with the 22 LR, but believe it or not, the 22 Barrel is shot out on that rig.....
its an early model of them, so I don't know how old it is...but I know my grandfather took a lot of game with it, as rabbit and squirrel was a big part of his diet...
that Savage 24 lived a long life of use in West Virginia before it came my way...

That gun must be really, really worn then. Most of the older Model 24's have a full choke. I've killed stuff with the 410 barrel of mine out to around 35 yards, which is really pushing it with a 410.
My old man bought mine for me when I was about 5 years old. Some of the best shooting I've ever done in the field was with that gun. Strangley enough, the best shot I've ever made in my entire life on game was with my old man's Model 24, which is a 22 Magnum/410 with a 2.75x scope on it. Think I'll leave the forged steaks for you old chap. A steak that is anything rarer than medium turns me right off these days. I used to eat my steaks rare, then realized that the thing was usually cold before I was even 1/2 finished with it. Cold, rare steak doesn't taste very good to me. These days, I generally cook all my beef just "done".
1. Never claimed to be a great squirrel hunter, mainly because I'm not.
2. Because I occasionaly lose track of time when I'm broiling a steak, and I'm too cheap to throw away a good peice of beef just because it's a bit crispy.
I'm still interested, although I hurt my neck really bad the other day and am having a lot of problems because of it (according to my doc, I pinched by Phrenic nerve which is not good). Unless I feel like absolute gargabe, I'll be there.

I fired up the barby and cooked some elk steaks but did the rest of the dinner indoors.
We are hunkered down, warm and cozy, plenty of food, wine, dry firewood, inside temp is 68.
32 now, no snow, sunny, threatening to be good weather. Projects for today; find the leak in the water system and finish building a support for the concrete benchrest to be delivered tomorrow

I'm sure some of the other guys will be interested as well - remember that a lot of them are probably out of town right now for Memorial Day weekend.
Sounds like it would be a fun weekend. I have too many other things already scheduled for the next couple of months. I am going to have to pass on visiting Eureka until things settle down for us.

Here's the deal; I'll be there on Friday 24 June and anyone is welcome to come in then, on Saturday I'll do a BBQ with a big pot of beans, if you want to drink anything except water, bring it and enough to share.
Recreational opportunities include: a 100, 200, 300 yard rifle range (bring targets), a metal target pistol and small caliber range, a blackpowder trail, a six acre lake full of small bass, bluegill and catfish. The rifle range has only one benchrest so if you have a portable rest you may want to bring it. Forgot to mention I do have a bench on the front deck and the targets are 212 yards across the lake.
We have many good campsites with plenty of firewood and fresh water. I suggest you plan on at least an overnight because it is almost two hours from Eureka. The road is a County maintained mostly gravel road in very good condition. Although it is only 33 miles from Eureka (12 miles as the raven flies) it is almost a two hour drive. Logging trucks traverse it daily, cabover campers have no problem but I'm not sure about large RVs.

I think the reason no one else wants to come is that they've finally all heard that story about you losing your cool and killing that black bear with a flying crane kick. Craig and I are the only two brave enough to go I guess.
