I've thought for a long time that voting rights should be reserved for those who have performed some form of service to their country.

As an aside, when did the downfall occur and what has fallen?

We got invaded and had our capitol burned in 1814, the country was split apart in 1861, we got our butts almost kicked entirely out of the Pacific in early 1942 but the country recovered from those.

We've had several huge depressions with around 33% unemployment in the last one but recovered from those - 20 years after the last big one we were the dominant economic power on the planet.

We've seen cultural changes galore - invasions by Hybernian hordes of Papists defiling our Protestant country, the Yellow Peril spreading in the West, freed former slaves spreading North, Italians invading what were formerly the digs of the Hybernian hordes, and now huge influxes of folk from south of the border.

But "The United States of America" is still here. Not the United States of America it was 50 years ago but that can be said every 50 years of our history.

Maybe an alternate question would be "how will we know exactly when the lights have been turned out for good?"

West Palm Beach, FL in 1910. I grew up about 30 miles south of where this picture was taken (and about 50 years later!). I cannot imagine hanging out in the heat there wearing those clothes.

3. Political correctness and cowardice. We have become afraid to state the facts that the negative actions of black minorities are our primary social problem and that fuels our economic problems.

4. The government's failure to prosecute and fine businesses that hire illegal aliens.

5. The deterioration of traditional moral values leading to the huge increase of single parent households and all of the social and economic issues that stem from that deterioration.

6. The use of illegal narcotics. Drug addicts should be jailed for at least a year so they can dry out completely and drug pushers should be executed. Marijuana is not a narcotic.

it's why I'm very much in favor of every person born in these U.S.'s having to perform 2-3 years of public service to our country. And I think it should be implemented by our military.

That's not to say there's not greed and corruption in our military. But at least the ideals of personal responsibility to a cause larger than yourself, honor and dignity are still qualities that are strongly emphasized by that institution.

For pete's sake, so many of our youth would be well served to find out what they haven't been taught at home, that yes indeed they are capable of making their bed after rising at an appropriate time, presenting a neat and clean experience and doing a full days work that benefits others.

doesn't mean that all youth would serve in combat units, quite the contrary.

I can envision our roadways being cleaned by our youth, our hospitals being staffed by many young people, those on SS that have no family but still trying to live independently having their yards and minor house maintenance performed by these well scrubbed youth, in neat attire with a neat appearance, graffiti being painted over or scrubbed off.

I see some pitfalls with it, but I like Shane's idea that it be a prerequisite before your vote counts for anything, and I believe we could go a long ways towards preparing our youth for the real world by giving them a chance at public service before they go on to college, or whatever work they choose to be a part of in their adult lives. NO ONE exempted, no Senators kids, no college athletes etc. everyone serves. If done properly we should be able to lower our tax rates by all of this cheap labor and I think if we stressed duty and honor and personal responsibility along with the ideals this nation was founded upon during their service we just might find we've done a better job of preparing our youth for the real world and perhaps a better world of their own creation.

I couldn't disagree more with the previous post. The idea that the only way to improve the younger generations is to force them into becoming government sponsored indentured servants is appalling.

Morals and personal responsibilities come from the home, not the army. The fact the young people today seem to lack the dignity and respect of previous generations is a symptom of a much larger problem, not the problem itself.

We are all a product of the society we grew up in. When you misbehaved when you were young your parents didn't rely on the government to discipline you, your father whooped your ass and you didn't do it again. But when society breaks down, when the family unit falls apart, everyone looks to the government for help. And that is were we are today, a give me give me society were no one is responsible for their own well being.

Under-use of the death penalty. If we simply killed off all the murderers and rapists after a guilty verdict, then we wouldnt have so many problems on the streets.
