Ok just talked with the outfitter and got deposit situation ironed out. I will collect all deposits made out to me and then just write him one check rather than him having to deposit 26 checks. Deposits should be sent to me and arrive no later than Jan 15th. deposit will be 1/2 which is $375

Dan: website says the cleaning and quartering of the hog is included in price...do we get that too? ( I know you negotiated a good price for us so I didn't know about the frills....)

Thanks!
Yes that is included just not a full butchering of cuts
I'm in, but I dunno squat about Ready's swimsuit competition nonsense...
I'll likely drive again, and will have plenty o' room in the Yukon. Anyone from MI, OH, IN, or Central/Eastern KY that wants to carpool, shoot me a PM.
Dan, will I need to pack any Ostrich-shot for this new ranch?
Let's see see what happens here, my son, Rock Butcher, wants to go, but I told him the regulars have first dibs. So he's in a holding pattern right now. He doesn't know it, but I got him a Savage Trophy Hunter in 30.06. I looked at Rem 700's and Tika T3's, but the deal on the Savage was too good to pass up. I tried to get a 308, but were out of stock.
Yea Poobah I am sure there will be no shortage of stories. I will be heading South out of KCMO if anybody needs a ride along the way. Is there going to be a shooting range for us to burn up some ammo?
Gunner I can probably shake loose a day early and come help you get caught up so you can go to the hunt. I can usually figure out how to make a tractor move and I have only been stomped by a cow once. Seriously I would be glad to lend a hand if it would help.
For me the shortest route is through Dallas and Austin, but only by 50 miles.
I'll be going I55 to I10 and over. Screw Dallas and Austin.
Houston can suck too, around rush hour on I-10. There are bypasses around Dallas & Austin, that are fairly painless. But I'd avoid Arkansas at all costs, especially if there's any snow or ice
If somebody wants to make a rest stop at my bachelor pad in Houston & share a ride to the hunt, they are welcome.

I've made the trip through Houston lots of times, I've only done the Dallas/Austin route once and I didn't like it. I'll stick with the way I know best.
Besides, I get to drive through Louisiana and I love Louisiana.
As of right now there are only a couple slots opened and still waiting on replys from some previous attendees Also have a couple guys on a stand by list so if anyone new wants PM me and get on the list after Jan 1st should spots be opened I will fill from the list
hate to see you miss out this time. I would like to think, it is for all the right reasons.
If your ship comes in, you got to be there to tie it down. May its hull be loaden with all the goods.
"Kid looked as if his ass was hit with a pumpkin pie." in your retelling of your one session of babysitting was one of the highlights for me last year.
Have not laught that hard since.
To find some good in the bad, its good to see your spot go to Steelhead.
Been looking forward to meeting him in person for sometime.
I'll probably grab one of the more powerful green lights this year. I have 3 of the smaller green hog lights, that are good to maybe 80-100 yards, if somebody wants to buy/borrow one of them. Ditto AR's/AR10's if someone wants to borrow a gun with lighted reticle scope.
The problem last year was the schedule they had us on. There wasn't any time to get drunk. If I remember correctly, there was a lot of booze left over.
Certainly will be an eclectic cast of characters. Plenty of people with experience in search & rescue, gearheads, cops, three lawyers, and one doctor. Enough to take care of any emergency.
We got any gunsmiths? I could load up some .270 Ingwe cartridges...
Im hoping my 6.5-06 will be done so I can test drive it on a pig before my September Moose hunt. Im thinking a 127 LRX will probably be stout enough for a pig.

I sure hope so. I am thinking my Browning M53 32-20 throwing heavy (115 grs) cast at "modern" pressure will do. Still working on it.
On stand muzzle loader hunting whitetail in Missouri. 3 coyotes is all I have seen. Bumping this thread up till Rick makes it a Sticky. Have a good weekend fellows.

I could see one of those little fellas getting a lot of work, Pat. Are you going to run it with irons, for the piggies?
It's a 7.62x39. Probably mount a straight tube Loopey on it, at least for testing. Which is now sitting on a .475. Although I do have a NECG receiver sight that could come off the .458.
Gonna give it a whirl tomorrow. Maybe pop a spike with it this weekend or next. The chamber is quite tight on it, and the throat is very reasonable for 123 gr bullets, so I expect it will shoot well.
You bet. Fair is fair. If we can tag a 32# plus for 3K, it's worth killing the 2 birds with one stone (trip).
I likely would have passed on a 1000-1500 acre fencing but 5K is a lot of ground to cover. Plenty of time to decide. They aren't going anywhere. Don't want one in velvet.
Shot the Ruger today. I confirmed that (ahem) one can run faster speeds than factory 7.62x39's. The load was within book, but it's going quite a bit faster than factory - like say 250 fps faster.
It seemed to do better with Hornady 123gr SST's, which measure .3104", versus Sierra 125's, which measure a true .311". Last 3 shots were in a 1/2" at 100 yards with the Hornadys. It's ready to kill a deer.
I'll likely do some more load development with it over the next few weeks. May even try some 150 gr in it.
Looks like my Ruger K1V .223 is finally on the way to me This configuration is the stainless barrel & action, 26" heavy barrel, 1 in 8" twist, which should be real interesting with long bullets.
Passed a spike this weekend with the 7.62x39 in hand, and then let a father & son sit on my stand and shoot the boy's first deer. So I still need to blood that Ruger.
We seem to have a few now at the deer lease. One of my buds managed to drop a sow, leaving her brood as orphans. She weighed 125#. we loaded it into the hitch carrier of my Jeep.
and I found the perfect steak rub for Dan
Finally did shoot a doe with the 7.62x39. It worked satisfactorily, though I want to test it some more.
It perfect Patrick, then when people say my food tastes like schit it will be true!
If anyone ever says your cooking tastes like schitt, they will suffer the wrath of The Grand Poobah!
Reference complaints regarding Dan's cooking. I have been retained as the "Complaint Department". Those with grievances are welcome to bring them to me.
I keep threatening to acquire one of them things myself, to quietly control hogs. But they are sorta spendy here, besides the legal red tape. Even though you can buy them over the counter in Europe, don't pack one in your bag
Just so you fellows will recognize me from my weight loss here is a pic of My bride and I at Thanksgiving. She has lost 60 lbs since May I am down 120 since March.
Yea I am bragging a little bit. She is pretty Hot and she has probably dropped another 10 lbs since that pic was taken.
I didn't even click on his gerbil vids......a man has to know his limitations , and mine include not watching what I think is gonna be " that kind of stuff".....
Congrats Charles! I dropped 20 myself, need to keep going...
Damn - we're gonna have to go with name tags: we're not gonna recognize anyone! I hope we're not so busy congratulating everyone on weight loss that we forget to drink beverages & tell lies.
Seriously, though: good work on the health, fellas.
I noticed today that when I used to look in the mirror Tom Selleck was looking back.
Now Wilford Brimley is staring out of the mirror at me!
I took the kids up to my folks' farm over New Year's, and they stood staring at a picture of my Dad, not able to tell if it was him or me. And he was 10 years older at the time of the photo than I am now.
Gordon I believe so these are premium tees not their cheaper ones,I'd still plan on some shrinkage after washing I was just told 100% cotton and the run a bit small so I'd definitely order 1 size larger so after washing you'll be good
Ok so if the slim trim fighting machine is going for the 1x, I'll go for larger than that and wash it as it arrives just to see. Hell 3x and I'll disappear inside but going to try that. large or a 1x would be normal for me.
I'm tired of shoveling snow----Dan just let know of an opening. Check went out in today's mail. Will it be turkey season there? May try for a rio if I can. Bob
Today I advised my dear wife that I bought a new bed for the spare bedroom. It is the "Herman Munster" model, for Tom. It has a pull out drawer that Carl can sleep in as well.

Dude...I hope you didn't go to any expense for me! You know I can just as easily get a motel......
Anyway I'd better you you my itinerary too, I'll PM you with it later this morning.
I'm gonna try to find some snake shot for my .40. I wasn't too worried about it, but I know Roof was on edge. The first morning we were out, when the feeder went off, he about jumped out of his chair.
Remember we don't know what kind of blinds (at this time) are at this place. Ground or raised. We also need to find out if this place has a site in range, shotgun range etc. I'm sure Dan will come through on this soon as he calls them.
Snakes I don't worry too much about them. If they are out, I'll take care of them as needed. Of course I had snake chaps, wore them on just one hunt. I didn't worry about the weather at Eds place 3 weeks later, we had a tornado (F1). So take the above with a grain of salt.
I agree, Gordon. Life is far too short to worry. Like you, I don't worry about snakes, I just kill those I run up on.
Speaking of stuff we wonder about, I wonder if I need to bring a couple fishing rods this time. I really enjoyed the time around the fishing spots last year.
Saw several new snake chaps last year, still creased from the package.
Yes you did. And they will likely look the same this year, as I just put them up as soon as I got back home.
Yep, me too, but I figured it was a small price to pay to keep my legs in tact.
Gordon, I was also wondering about the range situation. Last year, it was a good thing they had the range to at least site in because the airline beat the schit out of my hated Bushnell Banner series. My wife got me a new Leupold VX1 3-9x40 for my rifle, so hopefully it'll hold, but I'm still gonna want to shoot it. But with 13000 acres, I'm sure we can find a place to sight in.
I also hope they have a trap and skeet range. I had a blast last year. I could shoot trap all day. If they do, I'm gonna bring a couple of cases of trap loads this time. Last time, I didn't bring enough. Which brings to mind, I don't know if I ever thanked those of you who hooked me up. Thank you.
Briand Im pretty sure they have a sight in range, all these outfits do. A trap range OTOH I wouldn't count on....nice touch if they have it, but I was surprised to see it last year. The fishing was a pleasant surprise last year too, the ostrich....not so much
I am pretty sure they have a skeet thrower but not the fancy set up the ADL 7 had.Yes to rifle range for sight in I'll find out about the fish ect. One thing this place does have that was lacking last year was far more acreage, I beleive 45 blinds and stands and most important HOGS!
Snakes I don't worry too much about them. If they are out, I'll take care of them as needed.
That mean you're bringing your snake fighting cat?
I'd wonder if they'll let us drive around on the ranch? If so might pop the top & doors off the Jeep and try to photograph some exotics.
No on the barn cat, has cancer. Just letting him live out the rest of his life on the farm.
That the Co. Jeep you drive? Best way to own one. Would be fun to drive around a little but with the El Nino around, bet we will see a little rain so I will bring my "blue" color rain jacket. Will go way above the blue tape on a rifle.

Did Derek recommend this place to you? I guess he would know better than anyone.
Pat as we were speaking about not really set up for archery, he has 2 blinds that may work but he recommends against it...I know you will likely like that but I'll skip bringing my bow this go round Will sit with you and watch you and back up this a rifle though!
And I will bring a shotgun to see if it shoots straight. Some of you are good enough to find out for me. One Rem model 11 in 12 One Rem 11 in 16 for the good shooters.
You guys are mean - keep picking on our pig driving ostrich.
An ugly duckling he was, but that moment, driving those pigs for Joe to shoot, he was a beautiful swan.
His skill and determination, let alone his ability to flock those pigs out into the open for Joe, was priceless.
Always remember - we all have a part to play, men and beast.
Had I a ranch in Texas, I would have "bawed that 'strich and brawd ham haome, y'all"
Speaking of things that you did "brawd haome witchya", how has the cowboy hat been received by the Forsters & jaegers writ-large? Surely it's made you very popular:
They did have two male striches - I think the one who happily drove pigs for you was not the same one who hung around the lodge trying to mooch food and chase women.
If they were friendly they'd be fairly amusing critters, but I wouldn't trust him not to kick you into Mexico. I'd trust a big cat before I trusted that brainless kicking machine
i've been shooting the 320 gr leverevolutions. really need to set my reloading stuff back up. got a 100, 350 gr pile drivers i want to load up and try.
Hey Group. Trip is getting closer and closer. On these kind of hunts, I always like to bring a 1/2 gal of Rebecca Creek to clean out the dust in the evenings. I also like to bring junk ( as in snacks) to put out for the ones flying in. Last year I brought a bucket of some kind of gum, set it out and grabbed as wanted by the crew. This year not sure of what to get. Help me out here with some suggestions. I don't want to bring anything you guys don't want.
Also remember Bobby will be in attendance so we do have to keep him at his 130 lbs. fighting weight.
Champagne would be easy, have no idea where you buy caviar. So C and C for one.
sturgeon eggs are fairly hard to come by here. Alligator gar eggs could be easier.
believe gar roe is poisonous
I'll go to Central Market and see if they have any, of course a few crackers too. I'm going to look for something in a can, one bottle of the bubble stuff. I want to watch Dan drink a whole bottle of Champagne.

Gordon a couple years back myself and a friend were at a Xmas party. He says we are getting drunk and opens a bottle of Prosecco he kept going out to the garage and bringing in another bottle as soon as we finished one.7 bottles between the 2 of us. I was eating atomic buffalo turds and other greasy appetizers. Deb put me to bed when I got home as I was 3 sheets to the wind. An hour or so later I work up and redecorated the bathroom. Deb said I was heaving so hard the dog was scared.Deb came into the bathroom and all she was "your cleaning your own puke " Good times BTW I was kidding about the caviar I don't even like it
Just the drink then Dan. One bottle at that. You can share so you don't get in trouble. We have to keep you in tip top shape. Your the outfitter/hunter remember.
If it stumbles into the fire, reckon we'd have to put it out of it's (tasty) misery.
Hm.
That reminds me. Is Powell making it? He's fallen into a fire or two I hear, but has he ever fallen into a fire wrestling an ostrich?
Bring burn cream..., check on nearest burn facility... - check.
Bring the burn cream. No hospitals within many miles of this place. Air flight out if your that bad to old San Antonio. In fact bring your emergency med kit if you can get it on board a flight. If not, nothings going to happen to anyone. I remember the PINS trip of a few years ago. 25 or so miles down the beach to camping spot. We had a Doc/fisherman with us, he had his emergency kit with him. 16 year old helper stuck a (whatever it's called, a T shaped bar you use to push a 2 inch hook into the 18 inch bate fish) sharp bar into his arm and wrist. The Docs. bag had the correct kind of drugs to help keep the pain down on the two hour drive back to town by Roger.
I thought Sandcritter was the Doc, I never met him.
That does remind me of another, Ed's place (NE TEXAS). So I get to meet Dennis from AZ at this one. He's a nice guy, drives a Diesel. Part of the group is sitting outside just visting. Dennis and myself are looking at the weather radar on our phones. Rainy springtime weather. Dennis is worried about a squall line of storms heading our way. I said to Dennis don't worry about it Dennis, this stuff happens all the time in the spring out here. Few mins. later an F1 tornado came over the camp and tore up most of the camping gear and part of Eds house. Never seen a tornado before, didn't see this one. Air went from complete stillness to the 80/100 mph instantly. I did feel not to accurate of a playtime weather guy at that time.
Very true Pat. I was under the big blue tarp at the time. As it fell and started hitting me in the head, I just ran for Eds porch. with the tree on it. I did do one good thing, I put the food that was set out ready to eat under the tables in someones big plastic containers. We did get a meal later. I just didn't want to eat rained on brisket.
We have 26 guys attending the hunt and have sold 12 shirts(some guys bought more than one) I think this will be the last year for tee shirts as there doesn't seem to be an interest in them
Dan----What are the roads like at the ranch? Will a car make it to the blinds or should I bring the 4x4 pickup?
I'm not Dan, but kind of believe like all the other places I have hunted down there. You will be driven to the blind by your guide. But then again I'm not Dan.
I would bring a 4x4 just to get in and out of the ranch just incase Last year we got torrential rain and with out a 4x4 it would have been dicey getting to the main road If no rain it won't matter
Sunday morning came up on me and Jr sleeping in a school parking lot in Alabama. I thought I made a made a clean getaway, but I have since learned I have been banned for life from Alabama rest area restrooms after the Whataburger reckoning I delivered. I did a Bo Duke and slid across the hoot of the old tahoe before driving like crazy to the East end of the state after the deed was done. Sorta felt sorry for the poor cleaning person, but I didn't ask for that war.

Average monthly rainfall for Crystal City in March is about 1". Last year was mighty unusual.
At the time no it's not funny. Bet the lady thought you were just a redneck in a rush. If I remember I'll bring you something like x-Lax. Keep you cleaned out for sure.
We are good to go it tipped and they will be printed!
Also here is a link for Texas Parks and Wildlife Everyone will need a license. You guys from TX already have or know what you need For the out of state residents we need a Non-Resident Five-Day Special Hunting its #157 this can all be done online ahead of time. total cost is $53.00 start date should be 3/10/16 You must have this to hunt!
Dan----What are the roads like at the ranch? Will a car make it to the blinds or should I bring the 4x4 pickup?
Bob, last year I rented an SUV thing, but didn't realize it was only 2 wheel drive. It must be a Texas thing. Who's ever heard of an SUV with 2 wheel drive.
The roads are like a sandy dirt when they're dry. Friday night of the hunt we had and unusual thing happen and we took about 2" of rain. I found out what a TX flood was like. The water doesn't soak in and the sandy dirt turns to the slickest, nastiest, sloppiest schit you've ever seen. The outfitter only had 2 or 3 trucks with 4 wheel drive and got 2 of them stuck out there.
The standing water was there until we left. It was like a mud bog coming out of there to get to a paved road, about 4 or 5 miles. We had to catch a flight and didn't want to get hung up. Luckily we had Gunner behind us in his pick up but we didn't get stuck.
This year I'm gonna make sure that Mofo's got 4 wheel drive. If I were you, I'd bring it. Even if we got 1/2" of rain, might make it challenging.
And if it's like the ADL7 ranch, there is considerable oilfield traffic, meaning the paved FM roads get covered in mud from the trucks. Have plenty of windshield washer fluid aboard, and watch out for trucks entering the roads.

Ed, I gotta say that my less than refined palate has been very happy with Tito's for vodka, (which I drink very little of) but I am looking forward to a good Bloody Mary with Enchanted Rock.
I was at their place a couple of months ago. An old college buddy and wife flew out and spent a week here with us. Deep Eddy is along the way from our place to Austin. We spent a couple of days in Austin. Had a Bloody Mary there. Good stuff.
that's a head-scratcher here. Probably the #1 .223 and the .300 Blackout. Probably a couple of other interesting things for fun.
I am thinking my SxS Ugartechea 12 bore slug gun, my pre-74 358 Win for scoped work and my 41 Special Single Six for the helluvit. Maybe a custom peep sighted 8x57 Mauser carbine.
#1's like that is what first got me interested in collecting them. A moderately priced rifle (it was probably under $300 list price) with wood worthy of a custom rifle.
The #1B's like that, with 26" medium weight barrel are usually quite satisfactory on accuracy, too. Good Luck!
My brass,Lee factory crimp die and #28 shellholder just arrived from Midsouth as soon as your(Joel) package hits the door I can throw some loads together
Very Good! I hope the mule carrying the mail got started North before the storm hit down here. It did go out the day before yesterday, so hopefully you'll have them pretty soon.
Got my brass all sized ,primed and mouths belled Tracking shows Monday arrival so I'll be at the range to shoot it by mid week Went with a EGW picatinny base and Leupold QRW low rings, scope will be a VX2 2x7
Finally got the .444 Marlin today. As soon as I got it home I had it full disassembled for a once over and cleaning,it was pretty spotless but I went over it completely and stoned the trigger to lighten it up some.It probably could use a little more but I'll call it ok at about 4 1/2 to 5 lbs. Leupold VX2 2x7 is mounted and bore sighted and I hope to hit the range tomorrow and see what happens!
Nice shooting Dan. I am thinking I will join you with a lever, likely my peep sighted Browning M71 Carbine, maybe a '57 vintage M94 I bought while living in Alberta with plain ol' 170 gr Hornady's. If you want to play with 270 gr Speer Gold Dot's (hard to find) or 250 gr Partition's (long discontinued), both very fine slugs, let me know and I will bring some out.
I dont think my 6.5-06 is going to be done in time for the Hog Hunt. So Ill probably be stunt shooting with my .223 thinking of bringing my .50 cal omega but Dan would steal it because it looks just like his.. That .444 should do the trick Dan.
I'll bring a couple of boxes Dan. Ross Seyfried did a nice write on them way back and they just worked, it seems. I'll swap you a 1.75 of Tito's that I'll feed back to you via Bloody Mary.
Besides guys with see thru mounts and Bushnell scopes can't comment
Alright, cut me some slack, I got rid of the Bushnell. Matter of fact, I've still got. You want to buy it? It's on sale, $29.99.
What the hell is that thing on your head in the beach picture? It looks like a pig wearing a sombrero. You need to bring it on the hog hunt, it might bring'em in. They might think you're their long lost brother or something.
The cowboy hat is just wrong...the captains cap...not so much.
That plus the sweater around the neck reminds of the one of the rich kids in Caddyshack who the others offered some weed to " its the best man...I got it from a negro..."
But yeah, you can rock a number of different hats. You are one handsome SOB.
How the hell did we all end up with such good looking women. Lord knows we aint very purty. Must be because we are all hard working and responsible. Yea thats it.

She knew it when she invited me over for chicken and rice soup as a near senior in college. All more than good since 32 years going.
Hell she's going brown bear hunting with me in April and has decided she wants to fish peacock on the Amazon next year for our 30th wedding anniversary. Tough stuff.
Hit the range again this morning with the .444 for fine tuned everything and played around a bit, some one had a lacrosse ball and I had fun bouncing it around at 100 yds. I deem the 444 ready to go and pig worthy. Took a couple shots with the No 1 6.5x55 and she's right on Shot the 7mm-08 and .22-250AI last time out and all are good to rock so I just need to decide which rifle I'm gonna bring as a second.
My shirt arrived. Big as a tent. Took said shirt out of package and threw it in the washer. Washing as we type, then a good hot dry to shrink it. I hope.
Off the subject but if any of you shoot a snub nose J frame Smith. I bought a box of the Hornady Critical Defense 110 gr ftx. This stuff is good. My gun always shot high with 158 gr loads. The Hornadys shoot to the sights and shoot very well. Recoil is as mild as it can get with these little hand shredders. Im not a big factory load guy but I think these are what Ill be carrying from now on. It was out shooting my 4" k frame.
I have one of the 3" Model 60's, which is my "walk around the ranch gun. Usually loaded with 2 snake shot and 3 +P's, for 2&4 legged varmints.
different topic, I had to laugh at one letter I got. In June of 2011 I ordered a Randall Model 25. It was forecast for April 2016 delivery. My letter reads, "delay - est delivery July 2016". So I guess Randall Knives is still busy
Im heading out Saturday... will be hunting predators for a few nights, then on to Prickly Pear on the 13th...Leaving Rommel, and my wife with her Glock to guard the fort!
I know the bass guys will "pre-fish" a tournament...so I look at this as "pre-hunting"
Hell she's going brown bear hunting with me in April and has decided she wants to fish peacock on the Amazon next year for our 30th wedding anniversary. Tough stuff.
Have you ever killed, caught or fu*ked anything you didn't have to pay for?
Right...got it. We don't have critters like that here. Our poisonous snakes here don't worn you, they just bite. One good thing is that poisonous snakes aren't very prevalent either.
Don't know, I just throw them away. I normally just try to scare the chitt out of myself first when they are alive by walking over them or close and moving. Heart check deal. Last time I was around one the snake came up on the porch I was sitting on, the farm cat had to save me by jumping. The time before that a bird dog did the jumping deal. Both times I had no weapon on me. I have learned. I think. I'm a real poor weatherman too, just ask Dennis from AZ.
Mr. Joel...hope to see you and your son at the Westin Wednesday night. You have a place to crash.
PS...Bobby will be there too so you might have to sleep with one eye open.
Bob my friend, We'll stay out of your way, Wednesday night. I still feel bad for crashing with you guys last year. To be honest, I haven't even looked at the calendar and worked out when we'll be traveling.
Burden? You and your son a burden? Could never be the case and we'd be happy to have you swing by, even if it's late and if only for some sleep and a shower.
Your son couldn't have possibly grown much more over the past year, could he?

Hell she's going brown bear hunting with me in April and has decided she wants to fish peacock on the Amazon next year for our 30th wedding anniversary. Tough stuff.
That's a Leupie 2.5x. Neat little scope. I had it on a Ruger 1A 7x57 on the 2013 (?) boar hunt.
This little .243 does not like heavy bullets, though. Doesn't run them fast enough to stabilize. 80-87 grains mo' better. 80 grain Barnes TTSX factory rounds do well at the range. If they do well on a Texas pig, I'll hand load those for the future.
Edited to add: You said round-nose, didn't you. Hmmm. Maybe might work in this short barrel.
Pat they really are not set up or recommending it,but do have one blind that could be used for archery. I think their thought process is a hunter will be disappointed if he doesn't kill something.I know you and I think differently so if you want and have room in your truck bring your bow, you can always use a gun should it not be the right set up you like
Buc-ee's gas stations. Have a 100 pumps at each one and beaver nuggets. Beaver food.
Products[edit] Buc-ee's offers products found at most convenience stores such as fuel, cigarettes, tobacco, chips, drinks, and soft drinks at their smaller neighborhood stores. Travel centers include a deli, coffee shop, exterior tunnel car washes, Texas-themed specialty gifts and food, and products catering to hunters and river rafters. All Buc-ee's are open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Buc-ee's offers private labeled beef jerky, novelty candy, trail mixes, granola, pralines, jarred vegetables, preserves, and salsa. Their #1 branded product is caramel and butter-glazed corn puffs known as 'Beaver Nuggets.'
Problem is location of store is back towards Austin on I-35 about 35 miles or so. Buc-ee's New Braunfels or down on I-10.
So we are going to need the volunteer coming from the south east area of Texas to maybe stop at one if they pass one. One bag of beaver nuggets for one hour of billing time, barter.
Closest to me is just 30 miles, but it not built yet. Other is 80 miles east of me on I-20, maybe 100 not sure.
tjm and I had to stop at the New Braunfels store & pick up a couple o' shirts for Tide, if I recall. I think that's the biggest of the 5 Buc-ee's I've been to.
The most amazing thing is how they can keep several dozen urinals friggin' spotless, with all the traffic through that place. When they say, "clean bathrooms", they ain't kiddin'.

When I was watching the game and this came on, I had to rewind it about 3 times before I got what they were saying because by the time the message came up at the end I was LMAO. That's got to be the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

Nope - small town people that are happy as hell to have a job.
I frequently stop at the one in Luling, on my way to the deer lease. I've bought a few odds & ends over there, over the years. They usually have good BBQ, too.
Buc-ee's is also the source for the "You May Go to Hell, and I will go to Texas -Davy Crockett" t-shirts

Buc-ee's pays well, relative to other similar jobs. I was listening to the owner on a local radio show the other day. I believe he said the cashiers start out at $13 per hour. His dream was to make his gas stations a "destination" and apparently it's working out pretty well.
I guarantee you, on holiday weekends, the larger Buc-ee's have thousands of people go through them. The gas and restrooms don't make money, but I bet he makes a mint from food, drinks, and widgets.

Are there game processors in the area? Will they ship? I am driving from California and hope to camp on the way back. I do not like the idea of my ice chest in the back of the sedan for four days leaking away good wild pork.

They do good work and will ship. Dry ice in a sealed ice chest is good to go to. All of my deer and elk from Colorado have been hauled home that way including to the Bay Area. I was born and raised in Pittsburg.
Small world. Born in Martinez, raised in Port Chicago.
Yes it is. I started with Shell at the refinery in Martinez and spent nine years there before heading off to West Texas then onward... I used to drive the Port Chicago Hiway (when it wasn't flooded) between work and home daily as it was a better drive than Hiway 4 for me.

Easterners? I never would have thunk it. There ain't a whole lot goin on up there in Pitt. I'm sure work had a lot to do with it, but there's a lot of people that bail out of that place to find work.
I still have your t-shirt in my desk drawer. Let me know if you want me to bring it by or something. Hell, I just drove past your house today. If you come by the office and I'm not here, it's in my bottom right drawer.
Yep, I'm ready. It's 18 degrees here right now with 20 to 30 MPH wind. Luckily, I'm getting on a cruise ship next Saturday.

I'll post a couple of pictures of warmth when I get back. I hope you guys in the northern states stay warm. Then, a week and a half later, it's on to TX.
-2 degrees windchill -25 degrees with blowing and drifting snow as I type. It's all good its Feb in Rochester actually been a very mild winter thus far.

I heading out coming Thursday to join the "Arizona" boys. Really looking forward to meeting the bunch. Just in now from two days in College Station touring A&M and the engineering facilities.
He is still waiting on one more response. The local UT offered him a $4k/year academic scholarship so we are still in limbo. We should know all by month end.
Well, here's hoping that he lands in the place that is right for him.
It is a satisfying time when a Dad gets to see his son pick a career path. Tough, because we still want to be in charge of tying their shoes, but satisfying because we can understand that they are picking their own adventure/life story.
Yes it is. This is my last with son #3. Each being very different in their approach. With Tony we did little. He cranked out the essays with neither of us reviewing, filled out the applications, asked for the credit card to submit and, boom, done. Like your son, a remarkable kid.
I went to Texas Tech myself, and they seem to have only grown better as a university. As much as we liked to poke fun at the Aggies, though, I've been pretty impressed with A&M Engineering grads I've dealt with.
Ed, Joel, wagering both your sons will do very well
OK folks some unfortunate news BGCaty (Ben) has an injury to his foot and will under go surgery for tendon repair resulting in being in a hard cast for 4-6 weeks so he will not make this years hunt as planned. His son Stephen will still be joining us.
Therefore we have an opening for anyone that wants to hop in and join this years hunt.Pass the word and I will post a new posting in the campfire section.
The Grand Poobah, Ingwe the Bold, exalted Master held high in esteem, fearless Leader, Sleepless Guardian of Reason, Red Ribbon Winner in the 20 foot backward dash, King Ruler with the Iron Fist to the Merry Band of Turdlike People,

"Poobs" I dare say, why not call him "Bitsy Pookums", while you are at it?
We are good to go it tipped and they will be printed!
Also here is a link for Texas Parks and Wildlife Everyone will need a license. You guys from TX already have or know what you need For the out of state residents we need a Non-Resident Five-Day Special Hunting its #157 this can all be done online ahead of time. total cost is $53.00 start date should be 3/10/16 You must have this to hunt!

Dang, sorry to hear about Ben, he's a fine gent. His son Stephen's a good guy, though. Rockchucker promises not to be a bad influence...
I am bringing a vintage Redfield receiver sighted 8x57 custom Erfurt Mauser carbine mildly (due to the Erfurt action) loaded with 180 gr BT's. Seems you and it would be a good combo.
Ok boys just spoke with the Poobah he's in route home from TX and he gave rave reviews to Prickley Pear Outfitters! He said accomodations were great maybe even better than last year, plenty of hogs he killed 2 and could have killed more good size hogs as well He even said they got a Beverly Hillbillies cement swimming pond He's in KS in route home and in a couple days he will give more details and pictures. He did say these pigs are the real deal wild and wary and we are gonna have a great pork filled hunt!
and if you place your shot about 2" below the ear,
on a line between the ear and shoulder........
you sever the spine and they drop and paddle. NO TRACKING IN THE SOUTH TEXAS BRUSH AT NIGHT COZYIN' UP TO RATTLERS AND MAD BOARS.
Shot this one at 175 yds. plus. Either he moved or I pulled the shot, but I hit him about 3" to 4" back. He ran for about 75 yds. Luckily I shot him just before dawn and by time I got to the POI, there was a good blood trail. If it had been at dark-thirty, all bets would be off.

Thank god! I need to lose my rookie status.
Welcome geedubya, it's gonna be an interesting time.
Carl, there's a Bass Pro and a Dick's about 15 minutes to the west of the airport. They're right next to each other. We'll probably stop there again to get trap loads.
R-E-L-A-X I told you everything was in order and you'd get to shoot some pork Don't worry be happy! You'll be like Baby from Dirty Dancing you'll have the time of your life
Never did thank you for the future shirt and hat Bob. I'll wear it one day cause it will be clean. That's a lot of shirts and hats to bring on the plane.
Alrighty to both of you guys. I would just be looking from the stand during a hunt. Might have a Bobcat pop up out of the brush. Wanted to be sure, cause I'll pop that sucker.
Me too but March is our bad month for snow and rain it seems each year. That chit just comes on down south from way up north and seems to ruin the roads for a few days. Rain down there and snow up here. Lets hope for nice blue cool weather.
Last great rains up here (DFW) for me was Thanksgiving. So land is getting dryer. Drought is over, but by the time summer ends we may be back into the dry times. Depends on how soon the whichever La Or El nino shows up this summer. Then it's back to lots of rain in the northern half of the country. We hope for clear sky's and lots of drinking ,10th of March.
Will not even try to match you on the cigars. Going to pick up just a few to bring down to make sure we are covered. Not sure of who smokes them anymore.
For those of you driving, you wont need 4WD...good gravel road into the lodge. You WILL need a kill light, these pigs are big and wild, and mostly nocturnal.
I was there for two and killed out on my first two stands. 85lb sow and 125 lb boar. Could have shot an extra the next night but gave him a pass. Group of 7 hunters were leaving in the middle of my stay. They were there for 2 each and went home with 12...one guy telling me he only wanted one....so he only shot one. Their pigs were up to 208 lbs and they passed up bigger ones cause they aint as good to eat.
I've used the XLR 250 Kill Light and the Wicked 400 with two batteries.
The 403 has an intensity control knob. With the others they are at full power. With those you should hold your rifle vertical, turn on the light then slowly bring the beam down on the animal. Sometime that even spooks them. The 403 not only telescopes from wide beam to narrow (sqaure) beam but the intensity can be turned all the way down allowing you stay on target and slowly turn up the intensity. IMHO works much better. The only draw-back is that because of the IC knob the light is easily turned on in your pack. I either make sure the I/C is turned all the way down or take out the battery until I'm ready to turn on the light.
old style without I/c
new light with I/C
As I use a number of rifles I also got the universal quick mount. I can change from one rifle to another in just over a minute.

Details and pics in a couple days.
Nice! What sort of setups do they have, as far as blinds? Typical distance from blind to feeder?
Geedubya I have the XRL 252 with a Whisper Silent Dimmer switch adjustable brightness at your fingertips
"A truly intuitive way to precisely control your brightness level for every shot, the Kill Light® Whisper Silent Dimmer™ Switch provides customizable intensity control at your fingertips. Simple plus (+) minus (-) pressure points on the control pad adjust your light from off to high power and everywhere in between. Quiet, no click control allows for precise brightness control for each and every shot. No need to maintain pressure or click to the desired mode. Finger pressure dials in just the right amount of light for each shooting situation and distance. Quick connect plug system eliminates changing tailcaps and the possibility of damaging your switch on pesky snagging limbs."
Poobah will give the full report when he gets home he has limited internet service. But he relayed all was good blinds were older but fully functional Outfitter said all box blinds with some elevated some on the ground.
Tom was happy and excited and he said place was great
Yep, I need a new kill light. Last year I went cheap. You get what you pay for, because it sucks, 50 yrds max. Roof had a good light, but not sure which one he bought. Any other suggestions? The light that GW has looks good, but not sure about the remote battery pack.
Brian you can spend more, get the adjustable dimmer switch, longer range lights etc just search through the sight all depends on your uses and how often to actually use a kill light
Had one of those for a few years Dan, lost it at last years hog hunt. Either left it in the blind or guides PU. Don't know. So went to Amazon and picked one of their imports up for deer season, red lens model. That's the one I'm bringing this year. Good light for what it is.
Thanks guys. Roof said he's got the XLR 250. It seemed to work really well. I think I'm gonna buy one. I have to do it now, I'm gonna be away next week.
Roger and Leighton also had that fun too at different times.
Bobby got his in a undercut on a river bank (dry river) had to crawl in and stick that sucker. He did, he's still got his back so he gets to do those things.

Geedubya tell me about the #1 Ruger... I had mine last year rigged up with the kill light 6.5x55 but no pigs to poke for me last go round
OK, I'll try to answer a couple questions. Range set up is 50 and 100 yards, onl;y a couple people can shoot at a time. There is a mechanical skeet thrower.... Stands are sometimes older and a bit used ( read that to mean they are noisy if you aren't careful) typical yardage is 50-100 yards. Rifles I used: only used one on the pig hunt, the McFlame w .2233ai with Dobers favorites 63 Grain Sierra SMP...it performed exActly as Dober always described. Two pigs, two head shots, two exits.
Here are some pics:
Accommodations
Pond and pier: fish aren't too big in there yet...
Pool where Pat and I will be lounging in our leopard print Speedos..
Try to answer one other question as to kill lights. I think Geedub answered it well though! ( BTW: Glad you are coming down GWB, looking forward to meeting you!)
The light Ive been using is a Sniper Hog Light- "Destroyer" model in green. I have found it good to 100 yards no problem.
I have a scope mount though, and I'll be experimenting with that before March.
One word for everybody. Pigs often come in just past shooting light but not black dark. I managed to spook off two sounders by lighting them up at this time. Had I shown some patience and let them feed till black dark, they would have held still, which others did after dark....
I see a lot of people mounting their lights on the scope tube. I guess recoil doesn't cause any scope trouble with all that mass way up above the bore? These are brand new to me.
yes, you could borrow one of my Browning 150 lumen green lights. They are good for about 100 yards, tops, though. Comes with rail mount for a picatiny rail.
Think I'm going to ante up for a XLR 252 light. They come with a dimmer switch so you can gradually turn up the brightness.

Yeah....I killed one just at shooting light one morning......

I've used 3 different lights on at least a dozen rifles from 223AI to 375 H&H. I noticed no problems or damage to lights or scopes.
Merkel k1, half stock, 9.3 x 74R. (taken with i-phone)
Since I may use 4 or more different rifles while at the Petting Zoo, I like the universal mount.
it does not have elevation or windage adjustments, but you can carry your rifle to the stand in a scabbard or hard case, then mount the light in a minute or so just before dark. One can take toothpicks or twigs or ever paper if a shim is necessary. If we are to be shooting at 50 to 100 yds. windage and elevation should not be much of a factor.
While I'm on the subject, hopefully you guys won't think I'm presumtious with the following......
I've not been to the lodge where we will be staying, but am somewhat familiar with the topography, flora, fauna and climate of the South Texas brush country. I know that we will not be packing in on mules or by foot etc. However here are some things that I pretty much always have in my pack.........
First and foremost is Water: One is easily dehydrated in this country. IIRC, caffine and alcohol are diuretics. It can be in the 90's and high humidity. Two liters of water is good.
Flagging tape: This will most likely be brush country. It is easy to get turned around if you leave your stand AM or PM and don't pay attention. If you shoot an animal and it ain't DRT, either wait for the guide or wait 5 to 10 minutes, find a blood trail at the POI and start marking your trail.
Track back or GPS: I've had fog roll in on me a couple times and I got completely turned around. A GPS will get you squared away.
Headlight: Going out in the AM before daybreak and coming in at night after dark. Hoglets typically don't wear lights. I know this is private property and we should be the only ones hunting, but one can't be too safe.
Shooting Stix: Work well for giving one a second point of stabilization for a rifle.
Heavy duty Trash Bag: The largest heaviest trash bag you can find. A contractor bag is what I use. Hypothermia can be a bitch. With one of these most folks can crawl in it should they have to spend the night out of doors, and its blowing or raining. Can also be used as a rain parka if you don't have rain gear.
The other items in the pix are pretty much self explanitory.
Couple of things not pictured. From time to time gnats and flies can be a problem. I'd bring a can of off or something around 30% deet, 40% is better. A tee-shirt over the head and ears helps but a net or Off works mighty fine.
Sunscreen if you're fair skinned.
and it prolly goes without saying, paper towels work much better than toilet paper or prickly pear in case one gets caught short.
Thanks for the scouting trip Ingwe. Glad to see the Flame can kill hogs when Im not in the blind with you:) . Gdub thanks for the hint on the pack stuff.
I am packed and ready to roll 6:30 AM tomorrow to meet a new set of 'fire folks in Arizona. The 416 Rem M70, 375 H&H M70, 222 Rem Krico, 44 Mag Old Model Bisley, tweaked 10-22, old custom fat bodied 40 S&W Para and my #2 handgun purchase way back, a M63 Smith, are good to go. Looking forward to the trip.
Geedub: thanks for posting that list. This being a "guided" hunt you may not need all that stuff. I took in my 'possibles' bag water ( from the lodge) kill light, regular flashlight, cell phone (to call in if I got overrun), Camera, and thats about it.....coupla extra bullets.
Am I missing it but I don't see a address or directions to the lodge.
I will put up a map in the next couple days. Goo that you mentioned it cause the main road has a bridge washed out on it and you gotta take a detour...I'll put it up soon!
Not tryin' to be a smart-azz, but I guess after years of hunting the leases I hunt it has become ingrained that if you need it and don't have it, whose fault is that.
My current lease is six miles in off the highway thru 3 bump gates. I'll usually stay 4 or 5 days. May not be another human around for 10 miles or so at any given time. Most times I do not see anyone from the time I go in to the time I go out. No cell service unless you make it to the top of the hill. So basically you are on your on. Although not Alaska or Death Valley, the portion of the hill country I hunt can do you in quickly if you screw up. Consequently I try to be prepared for the occasion.
One other item that could make the experience more enjoyable was if folks had GMRS radios. We use the 5 watt/36 milers. I will be bringing two. Folks can sit in their blind and yakk/touch base with their buds. Can be quite comical sometimes.
I do think this is going to be a hoot and definitely am looking forward to meeting all ya'll.

After Tom's (Ingwe) report, I once again knew Dan did a fine job of selecting a place for the gathering.
Seems as though there might actually be some "hunting" to be done at this place. It's beginning to remind me of a place I hunted having possum turtle lake or something like that name associated to it. Those pigs were wary and quite cautious coming into the baits.
Poobs and GW, thanks for all of the info, I can use all the help I can get.
I ordered my XLR 250 light yesterday and has been shipped. Bobby, or anyone else, I've got my light from last year that you can use. It's got rings that will mount on a scope or you can take it apart and it'll hook onto a picatiny rail. It's not real great, but will get out at least 50 yards. Just let me know and I'll bring it. It's better than nothing.
Dan, it looks like a great place. Thank you for your hard work. I'm sure we'll have a great time.
One word for everybody. Pigs often come in just past shooting light but not black dark. I managed to spook off two sounders by lighting them up at this time. Had I shown some patience and let them feed till black dark, they would have held still, which others did after dark....
Which is exactly why you want to shoot so they're DRT. Tracking in thick stuff after dark is difficult at best, if not virtually impossible most of the time.
Best,
GWB
I figured you was prepared for hunting on your own! I take less stuff in this situation cause if something goes haywire I can get on the phone and whine to somebody who cares. My day pack for heading up the hill in Montana has a lot more schitt in it!
Im not sure about March down there, but I may also be hauling a Thermacell into the blind....
If mosquitoes get me with the Zika virus and I get pregnant, I don't want to be giving birth to any more microcephalic Democrats...

You can bet I'll have a thermacell with me......
and BTW,
I understand that if Bernie Sanders is elected it will make history as it will be the first time a jew moved into public housing after a black family left. Ya'
This Randall actually did finish off a pig, that hand been brought down by a muzzleloader
My Model 25 - (which I ordered in 2011) is supposed to arrive this summer
Pat, you will hate me when I tell you this but I bought my first Randall from Bo himself in 1972...four year wait at that time, he had it to me in 2 weeks.
In 1992 I dropped his son Gary a Note with an order for a Camp and trail knife. Found out Bo NEVER got rid of any correspondence, Gary looked me up and sent the knife in....you guessed it....two weeks.
Now that I'm flying, I'm down to only one choice, as Ready's firestick will occupy the other spot in the gun case. Unfortunately, I've got 3 rifles that currently need bloodying:
* Marlin XL7: I'm working up a nice load with 165 TTSX's at around 2,800.
* 700 Classic in .300 Savage: It likes the Steelhead 130 TSX load, but I just shot the best group of my life with it this morning, using Hornady 150 SP's at around 2,680. Either load is more than hog worthy.
* Mauser 98 in 7x57: I bought it in STL last Summer when someone nonchalantly suggested I stop by Trail Creek Trade Company... It's more than serviceable with 175 RN's. Heck, it might even be Poobah-approved. Still, it's got iron sights, & I'm not sure how my eyes would do with it in low light.
If I went according to time in the safe, the XL7 would go. But with the way that 700 Classic is shooting, it just may jump ahead in the batting order.

I can actually beat that. Around 2001 or so, I bought a Model 25 off the shelf from Randall. It was in their finished stock. Was I smart enough to keep it? No....
My 308 and a buffalo gun for the hogs. Well the Sharps is really to be shot by you guys. Got to get 50 loaded and let some of the non Sharps guys shoot it time or two. Need to bring you to the "Dark side" Shotgun--Rem 11 12 gauge. Pistols- S & W 66-2, for Joel and Pat to see if it shoots straight. They never fail to hit the target.
OK....heres the best I could do on short notice and even shorter technical aptitude...
YOUR OFFICIAL DETOUR
Instead of progressing due south on 83 out of Uvalde you must take Ranch Road 117 to Batesville.
This will cross Hwy 57 which is OK....continue on until the road forks and take the right hand road...Ranch Road 1025
This will kinda fork again, continue to your right on Ranch Road 1025
After a few miles take a left on Ranch Road 395, go about six miles and you will see the gate, though it is marked Thompson Hunting camp( the old owners..)
I imagine arrivals will be somewhat coordinated and we will be met at the gate and escorted to our posh living quarters!

note, turn around if you come to large river...
Poobs, I see 395 on Google Maps, when headed south on 395, which side of the road is the gate on?
Thanks, I'll take your word for it. There's a whole lot of nothing out there, so I'm sure we'll find it. Looking at Google Earth, I see something right past 582, but not sure. It might be an old picture and not showing up. I'll just stop periodically and listen for the gunning.
With Dan shouting out directions from the passenger seat, I only traveled 3 hours to find paper plates and missed the entrance to our last Texas hunt by about 22 miles.

We'll be there sometime around noon...to 4pm.
22 miles? Oh man, and he's the one that's gonna get some clearer directions for us. But then again, beggars can't be choosers. I'll just drive up and down 395 until I find it. It can't be that hard to find, that road is only about 10 miles long.
Yes! Best sign ever "Give Jesus a chance if you don't like him the devil will take you back"
I have a better GPS this time(Garmin) that stupid Tom Tom did the same thing in Fl this past Nov. tells ya to turn after you passed the damn road. But we got to see where Michael Waddell hunts!
That's what I thought, but it has 2 trailers next to a square roof thing that I thought might have been that gazebo thinking it's an old picture and built the lodge there or something. There's not a swimming pool either.
I'm not worried, if Poobs can find it, we're in good shape.
No Kia for me this year. Ill be traveling in style. New to me 2011 Pick em up truck. Only 89000 miles.
My old one that you can kinda see in the background was a 07 with 220,000 miles still runs and drives good just hate to take it on long trips as breaking down a 1,000 miles from home can get expensive.
With this trip and my upcoming Moose Hunt in BC this fall I figured it was time to pull the trigger. Man is there a world of difference between a 07 and a 11 this thing is sweet. Besides I think the Kia would of been overwhelmed on the Moose Hunt.
Im pretty sure Joel is the man for the Job. If he ever gets ahold of you I dont think it would end well. Could be why Joel Junior is well behaved......
FWIW guys...heres the kill light setup Im using...
Sniper hog light " Destroyer"
And my mount looks like a 2 sided version of this...something they no longer offer..( and yes, Im gonna use the mount this time, it seems to work great!)
Thanks. Mine is just a 12 dollar deal off of Amazon but it seemed to shine as far as yours Im trying to figure out a mount for mine somewhere other than on the scope though I am sure that will work fine.
It's their xl252 light, which is quite powerful, and comes with a dimmer switch. This kit includes the light, gun light mount, switches, and batteries/charger. I just ordered one.
FWIW I found when using the green light a lower setting is good if the pigs are within 50 yards or so...the brighter setting will spook them at close range. Farther out, brighter is better, but I like to spot them in the 'halo' of the light, then lower the light, and the boom on them
Geedub has a lot more experience at this than I do, so hopefully he will chime in.
Hey gents...how long are they allowing us to hunt after last night from our blinds? Or, is this for that last 15-30 minutes of time before we're rounded up?
Hope Tom. You would think a light would be a good thing.
I do not have the dimmer thing, so I do not mount the light on my rifle for that reason. Use a jacket under light to get over edge of blind and put halo on feeder, move with my hand left or right slowly.
Got a favor to ask of those who are driving to the hunt.
Been a while since I've seen any Ramshot powder at all in my area, and I could use a couple of pounds of TAC.
If anybody sees some between now and then, I'd appreciate somebody picking up a brace for me. Don't everybody do it, though, because I don't need a dozen.
Just order my TX license of the net. Plan on bring my shotgun. Is it trap shooting or sporting clays? Also do we provide the clay targets? I can put in 5 or 6 cases in the truck. Plan on bring a couple flats of 12 gauge shells.
Do I need to bring a bottle of Tito's, a couple of pairs of boxing gloves and a wrestling matt (my high school days though Gilbey's for Tito's) for a certain pair of politico's?

Believe the politico's prefer to go-to-ground old school, and dangerously close to an open fire.
You're thinking of CrimsonTide demonstrating the difficulties of weapon retention when using Rockchucker as a tackling dummy on a tile floor. THAT coulda used a mat!

I have a couple pounds I could spare, if Ed doesn't find any for sale.
bgcatty just wanted to say he is doing well. He had the foot surgery last friday and has a leg cast on. It's a 4-6 week recovery. Looking forward to seeing all of you down in Texas.

glad to hear he's doing well, look forward to seeing you!
Assuming I get it sorted out, I may try the 55 TTSX in the new Ruger
Pat is that the new .223 Ruger no 1#
If so jump right to the 62gr TTSX
The 55's seemed to shoot okay, and will be faster. Accuracy has been erratic. I need to swap scopes and then figure out if that's the problem (the scope on it is probably bad).
Got this mounted up tonight. Thought I would be able to switch the light from gun to gun. But getting the light to shine were there the crosshairs are pointed took a little shimming bending and cussing. So it looks like if I use something other then the Faux Ti .223 I will be holding the light.
[img:center][/img]
Loaded up some 87 speer hot cores for the old Savage 99 old school cool.
[img:center][/img]
Im thinking of bringing out my Old 7mag Beretta Mato as well. Mounted a 2.5-8x36 Leupold on it tonight. It has killed all my big deer but never perforated a hog.
My mount looks similar to yours but connects to another scope ring, and mounts directly on the scope. It is always pointing where the crosshairs are.... so Im thinking I'll go with it instead of holding the light in one hand and gun in the other like I did last time...
I may have to try a scope mounted holder. I thought having a removable rail would be slick it might work if I had a rail mount on each gun and just switch the light out. Ill make it work one way or the other.

Dan: I know I can order on line, but I want to avoid the hazmat fee.
My XL252 shipped today, so I should have it in plenty of time. Probably use it most often on the AR10's rail. But it comes with a barrel mount as well.
Hawk Bullets ain't answering email, so I'm not sure about .351 Winchester bullets
I recall shooting ".357" cast bullets out of my brother's 351 many years ago and they shot well enough to kill blacktail at 50 or so yards. Something similar and a Lee sizer would work on hogs.
That should work, I reckon, if they'll feed in it. The Hawk 180 worked well on a cull buck. Other than trying some different powders I don't see a lot of experimenting with it.
Joann fabrics...I just buy it new so I can customize the fit cause I'm always traveling with different rifles Sharpie and electric carving knife and voula !
After traveling a bunch the past few days, hopefully I can get some projects knocked out. I picked up some Speer 150 gr .310 softpoints, will give them a whirl in the #1 7.62x39
Elusive Wildlife also delivered my XL252, seems a big, beefy unit, with everything well made.
The Hog hunt is going to be great. I think we will have some fun.
The last few Days have been taken up with figuring out why I hell I keep messing up somewhere between sizing and seating dies. The chamber on this sharps is tight. Things have to be perfect for things to work.
What I'm looking to do is load, place in chamber and shoot. Lots of variables can happen.
Anyway. Got to the point I sized 9 pieces of brass, Expanded, placed primers, dropped powder, placed a wad, compressed powder, then seated bullet without a crimp but the bullet wouldn't fall out. Went between sizing and fire formed brass. They all fit in chamber. Heck of a learning curve. I want 50 rounds to take on this hunt. Some in the group may want to shoot a Sharps for the first time. I will have 50 if any want to shoot it at the range. Friday to the range to shoot 20 or so, see where they hit.
Then next week is any shopping for stuff to bring and get myself somewhat ready. Looking forward to the trip.
Just sighted in the old 7Mag with the new scope. Cant say I am sold on the 2.5-8x36 Leupold. On 8 power it tapped my nose a couple of times. 6 power is were I will hunt it but eye relief is less than on my 6x42's. I knew this but tried it anyway. May put it on my Faux Ti after this hunt and put my old reliable 6x42 on the 7mag. Anyways the 7mag is ready to take on a hog. Im so ready to hit the road for this hunt.
Gettin close, isn't it. Still needing to replenish reloads for this warhorse in 30WCF since it got a whiff of LeverRevolution. Light and eyesight permitting, plan to kill.
Gone round and round on a backup/scoped rifle. Either the Swedish Pimple, being a safe bet, or else this other swede cobbled with a 7x56 meopta monstrosity. Was intended for coyote this winter, Big Bottom Girl, but hadn't gotten her out. This would be as good a test run as any in the dawn/twilight. Big might prove beautiful, or might prove "just big", we'll see.
The Swedish Pimple. Big Bottom Girl wouldn't pose for the camera.

That's the light I bought and arrived the other day, but haven't even taken it out of the box yet. I think I screwed up though, I didn't get the dimmer switch. It's got to be better than the light I had last year.

My license came in the mail a couple of days ago. It only took about a week or so.
I'm gonna buy at least a case of trap loads when I get to San Antonio.

Beautiful. I, too, am bringing a lever gun and a swede but nowhere near that good lookin'.
I am also bringing the family as the wife is afraid that once I get to Texas I won't come back. So I am stuffing the girls into the back of our econocoffin and making my way there via the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest, and the Painted Desert. I will put them in a motel with a pool (Carrizo Springs) and hit the brush. I haven't been this excited in years.

You should bring them to the ranch, it will discourage leopard Speedos...
So I am debating. I have 300 gr Hornady DGX's (Midway blems) or just plain old Hornady 300 gr RN Interlocks. What do you think I need for hogs with my 375 H&H?

If no one else comes up with some I have a couple pounds of TAC I could spare.
I have been munching down on this sow I killed down there and it is easily the best wild pork Ive ever had. ( Had some in Texas and Florida that was OK but not spectacular) Even the fat is good. This week alone Ive had pulled pork,Tacos al Pastor, and last night I marinated a couple steaks in Teriyaki and grilled them. EXCELLENT!
And shotguns, will bring my old Model 11 Rem, 12 ga. full choke. And a few target loads. Remember we have lots of time in between hogs hunts to mess around.
We are going to put you at the pool area anyway along with Bob, Tom, Pat from SE ocean town while were are out shooting. Talking politics of running Crystal City of course.
Not on departure day maybe on arrival day but that's going to be up to the outfitter We are slated to start hunting Thursday but he may let us start wed. afternoon I told him that was at his discretion as the arrangement was hunt Thurs-Sat.
I just loaded up some 41 Special's for my Single Six. I'll bring it along as it has been a bit since it has been out. I also dug out my 12 gauge Ugartechea SxS slug gun. I need to dig a bit and find my slugs. I then realized it is martini-o'clock so here I type with a chilled one.
Trying to decide if I need to take Dan to the sport's bar for drinks and lunch while waiting for you or if we can knock it out with all 3 of us together after grabbing the ride.
I made dinner reservations for us already. 8pm.
Dan...the hotel confirmed your waxing and exfoliation for 6 pm.
Im driving down again. Gonna leave on the 8th and stay somewhere in Texas that night. It sure as hell aint gonna be the Super 8 I stayed in last year. I may take back roads down and stay off of I-35 in Texas the traffic sure sucked last year.
Im flying this time. EdM is picking me up and babysitting me till we get there....Anything I shoot is gonna have to go home with folks that drove...
Bourbon in, check. Gin in, check. Vodka in, check. Cachaca in, check. Rooms made up, check. Jalapeno cheese sausage from my youngest son's deer last year in the back 40, check. Rifle, handgun and shotgun loads ready, check. This retirement schitt is killing me...
If you can work your way over to 83 it goes the whole way and is good road....
That is kinda what Im thinking. But I think I will take 35 to OK City and then head down to Witchita Falls and then Abilene Tx to catch 83 instead of going all the way to Oakley Kansas and then cutting South. Should be a better trip than going thru Dallas Austin and San Antonio. Might as well see some different Country ive done the I-35 route many times.
On another note my 7mm Mag shot a 3 shot group today that measured .300 outside of hole to outside of hole. Ill post a pic tomorrow. Faux Ti put a 50 gr tsx into the same hole as the 50 gr vmax so my varmint and pig load shoots to the same P.O.A. which is kinda handy. Savage 99 and Tikka 25-06 are getting rung out in the morning.
Zing past Kansas City on I-70 west till you hit 83...take a left
That sounds like the directions my wifes GPS gives. O you want to go Arizona Take I-80 to San Fran Ca go south on I-5 south to LA and then go east on I-15 to I-40 east to Arizona.

Hell I pizz blood when I rattle off multiples of three at an inch and a half with my big critter rifles.
Its a shooter with one load and one load only. 140tsx molyed with enough RE-22 to hit 3200 fps and Fed GM215M primers. Any other powder, bullet or primer and it's lucky to shoot 1 1/2". It's a picky bitch. Now it doesn't always shoot as well as it did today but it is a honest 1/2" gun with that load. I still ain't liking the 2.5-8x36 scope on this rifle but it will work till after the pig hunt.
My fancy .223 Ruger is annoying me. Swapped a scope. Shoots patterns with 75 gr Amax, like the last scope. Checked weight and concentricity of loaded rounds, and they are fine. 55 TTSX are better, maybe 1.5" at 100, with 4 in less than an inch. I'll try bedding the forend, and different bullets, to see if I can get it settled down.

I got a chuckle out of the ferrari bit and Bobby wanting one for each of you. We need to turn this in to a campfire Cannon Ball run. Me and Jr. will snag a Bambulance and turn the woo woos on from the Bluegrass to the Lonestar state.
If we could just find the equivalent of Farrah to ride in the back...

Get Raquel Welch to ride in the back!

Too bad about the #1
I was gonna bring mine in the deuce but the only scope I could get to fit on it has marginal eye relief...not good in the dark. It shoots great, but it don't shoot in quite enough of a hurry....

Here is the 25-06 tikka this am it is 20-30 mile an hour gusts out there so precision couldnt be had.

And finally the Faux Ti .223 Varmint load/pigload touching.
That Faux Ti, Charles, just suck hindteat so bad, it hurts. We will talk at Prickly, lest you need help disposing of it.
Sorry Carl but there is a fairly long line of folks ahead of you. That little gun is amazing. Im no Stunt shooter but I have made some shots with that little gun that I still cant believe. Any misses out of this gun aint the guns fault.

I'd like to bring the .22-250AI but flying limits me to 2 rifles The 7mm/08 has Leupold QR rings so I just pop the scope off and put it in my carry on leaving more room in the gun case for my kill light knives etc Also it's stainless incase we get rain Besides its a shootin son of a biitch

So I make another run with the Ruger #1V .223. Tried 3 new bullets in it, all loaded with Varget. I also measured the twist at 1 in 9", not 1 in 8". That put me in a fairly bad mood, until I shot it:
The Berger OTM Tacticals are about .10" shorter than the Hornady 75gr Amax. The first 5 went into one hole. Not bad for a windy day. So...

Thats better. You might try the 68 gr hornady HPBT they say they shoot well in 1 in 9" guns.
I wish I had the rifle ready to go. Loaded a few to send off to smith to test fire when he gets it finished. Sounds like it is getting close but he had to head out of town for a while to work.
Hell I pizz blood when I rattle off multiples of three at an inch and a half with my big critter rifles.
I lied guys It wasnt .300 it was .400 I apoligize:) [img:center][/img]
Here is the 25-06 tikka this am it is 20-30 mile an hour gusts out there so precision couldnt be had.
[img:center][/img]
And finally the Faux Ti .223 Varmint load/pigload touching.
So after blasting away with a number of toys over the past few weeks I have settled on this:
A receiver sighted custom Erfurt 8x57 Mauser (180 gr BT proven in Africa) and either a Single Six 41 Special (215 gr SWC proven on a bittie 100# hog) or an Old Model 44 Mag Bisley (proven on range paper) for the potential daylight shot and just "fun to shoot the hell outta" stuff. Oh, and my SxS slug gun (proven on a 200# hog).
Night time stuff will be a pre'64 358 Win with the 200 gr TTSX (proven on an azzload of African critters) and a post'64 stainless 375 H&H (to be proof'd on a brown bear in a couple of months).
Ready- You seemed to get along with the SxS Merkel when shooting clays last year, even though it's a GDR product. Shall I bring it along this year? --Bob
Roger I just laid a sleeve of my jacket on the window of the blind to keep it quiet then used the light in my left hand and rifle in my right.Worked fine.
OK, I'll have it anyway down there. So if you decide you want to try other rifle, let me know. I was going to try unmounted light see how that works.
Really, get to shine light around without moving the rifle around. That's my reason.
I shot mine a couple weeks ago with an unmounted light...really wasn't too tough....
There you go, I'll just put an extra shirt in pack or rags and use that to even up the window shelf with the window if needed. Don't even have to hold it. just turn it on when ready for the outside glow of eyes.
This one came with my light. It will work on about any rifle somewhere. Had it on my 30/30 on forearm of rifle even. Works
Yes you can use it while on hog hunt Roger.
Did it come with the rail mount? you could use an AR and stick on the rail.
Some plane or helicopter is going to be flying over the ranch and wonder WTH are all the green lights
Of course not for the rail, tried a streamlight maybe several years ago mounted on side rail. Didn't like the white light so moved to the red and lost that one, now to green. Of course I could use the scope on the AR to mount a light too, trijicon. Nice scope, but didn't plan to bring the AR.
Hm. Looks like new moon March 9, first quarter is on 15th, so. Maybe avail reflected light won't be a factor either way if they drop/pick-up half hour around dawn/dusk as was mentioned. Bringing a couple year-old VRL-1 just in case.
I used to have an easier time finding Ramshot powders around here. Don't know why I'm not seeing it stocked. If Pat hadn't come through, I would have paid the full hazmat on a couple of pounds over the internet.
Bob, I think that will be my part of the firm that handles Poobs financial windfall, but hang in there partner Poobs is getting up there and will be needing your elder law advise
Im having a hard time finding small rifle primers here.....Not in dire need but just thought I'd replenish....I was wrong.
Tom
What kinda of primers and how many do you need. I have some cci small rifle mag, some tula small rifle primers and some Fed gold match small rifle. I could let go of a brick of the Tula's The other maybe 500. Let me know

10/4 snake boots are packed One of my employees is from TX and he reiterated what Derek told me last year, the snakes don't rattle much any more they just strike
Dan: IMHO most of the snakes don't rattle because they ain't there. I don't buy this story that the snakes have learned not to rattle at people. Every rattlesnake I've seen in the past 4 years has either been in plain sight and snoozing, or rattled at me in the grass/weeds/rocks.
But if snake boots make you feel better, go for it!
Spent most of yesterday morning at Doctors office and Hospital. I took off towards work and got about five mile from home when my back started hurting. I stopped to get out and stretch that didnt help I started feeling sick and got extremely hot. Went back home and the only way the pain would get less was by walking. Wife found out that my Doc has a walk in clinic on Monday mornings so she loaded me up. They quickly decided it was a kidney stone so they took a CT scan to make sure. Gave me a pain shot and nausea shot. Sent me home with pain and nausea pills. Now if this 3mm boulder would pass it would be great. So im hoping I will be in good shape to leave nest tuesday.

Ouch. Hope you heal up quick, Charles!
Nursing my left ankle here, after it started yelling at me.

What do these blinds look like. By that I mean small windows with a shelf under or what.
Think I'll mount my light.
Bob Least we don't have any chiggers down there any longer. 5 years or so they just all disappeared. Heard there was a small problem out in the Virginia area.
picked up 5 boxes of 12ga 1oz game loads, to donate to the clay busting.
Seriously? Only 5 boxes??!?!?!??! Shee-it, dude, me and Karl went through 10 boxes in about 20 minutes last year!!
Get thee down to Tractor Supply and pick up a case, at least.
I'm also bringing an SKB 200 double for folks to use.
But I was gonna get more shells tonight, anyway.
snakes:
FWIW the biggest rattler I've ever shot didn't start rattling until he had 2 .45's through his head.
You guys might want to throw in a couple boxes of birds. I don't think this outfit has ever had a crew like us before, and they might be underprepared in some areas
7mmMato; That sucks! I heard Kidney stones were the worst! I hope it goes OK for you!
Bob: I friggin LOVE snakes, you an sit in the blind with me.....and them
7MMMato - Hang in there. I too have had kidney stones (twice) and know what you are going through - like you said the pain and nausea are the worst. Hopefully this too will pass along with the stone. Take your meds, drink plenty of water, and stick to any diet the MD gives you.

Thank You sir. The pain meds make it liveable. Hell they make me sleep like a baby. Im taking them but Im about to back off down to one pain pill every 4 hours instead of 2. I need to get back to work since Im off most of next week as well. Looking forward to visiting with you and everyone else.

Sorry to hear that Charles, I hope you pass it soon. I can't imagine driving all that way with it. One of my guys is chronic with those damn things. He gets them once every year or two, and has had them sonic blasted a couple of times. Get rid of those bastrds.

We're gonna stop at Bass Pro in SA when we get there and I'm gonna get a case of trap loads and a case of birds.
What date and time are we suppose to arrive at the ranch? And then what is our departure date and time?
I need to figure out my driving time. Bob
Bob mid day on Wed. March 9th and depart Sunday morning the 13th I'll be speaking to the outfitter and post an exact arrival time
It was funny, last year at ADL7, they actually took us out the night we got there. It's a good thing because we lost Saturday morning due to mud. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll give us the bonus round at this place.
Just thought of this. Is there seating at the rifle range and under the porch?
Last year we spent a lot of time at the range shooting and shooting the bull.
I know we would all grow weary of sitting around the indoor table.
If they dont we need to think of bringing some lawn chairs. I can probably come up with 4-5 chairs.
Obviously the guys flying cant bring a chair so those of us driving could bring some.
Good idea. Man, I'm so glad we have smart people like you going with us to save our azzes like that. From us flyers who can't bring any, chairs would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
They make aches & pains go away, & are all kinds of refreshing on the hot days we'll be experiencing. EdM has secured the hooch, and I'll fetch some limes & raw sugar on the way to the ranch.
I have invited her to come mix them for us, but I can't guarantee her presence at the hunt.

Thanks for the well wishes. I dont think it has passed yet but the pain meds help Im backing off of those pain meds today and see if I can tolerate it. I need to go back to work. Got a uroligist appointment on tuesday the 8th at 8:30 am so I am gonna get a late start on the trip. Sorry to hear that Charles, I hope you pass it soon. I can't imagine driving all that way with it. One of my guys is chronic with those damn things. He gets them once every year or two, and has had them sonic blasted a couple of times. OK guys just spoke with the outfitter for last minute details. There is wifi at the ranch but its on the slow side. They do have some lawn chairs but not enough for everyone so guys that have room and are driving throw a couple in your vehicle it will be appreciated. We won't start hunting till Thursday as the guides won't be there on Wednesday. So Thursday-Saturday for hunting.Guides will get everyone squared away with their hogs quartered and iced Saturday night and you can tip them out Saturday after the evening hunt. Arrival time is 2:00 pm Wednesday 3/9 we won't do much except get settled, reaquainted and maybe sight in guns for those that flew or need to. I went over the menu and food should be satisfactory and Pat and I will help as needed and he and I will man the smoker for brisket one of the nights.
Bet the brisket will be great. I guess we just get to and go south on 395 until we see that gate that was posted much earlier. 2:00pm means I'll stay at the farm Tuesday night and get up early for the rest of the drive.
Going to the range in the morning to sight in my scope for my current load, then back and see what really fits into my Jeep. Ice chest takes up lots of room, along with chairs. Have only two chairs that might hold up under a drunk. Not that anyone going to get drunk during this trip.
Will be good to see everyone and meet the new ones. Hope Charles has passed his stone by now. He's going to be real sore..
Don't forget, Spring time is around the corner. Mama rattlers will be emerging with newly hatched young. They seek warm sunshine to lay in and nurse their young. They become aggressive and will chase you.
Tom...based upon your experience at the ranch, would you say that this is the type of hunt where regardless of whether you're hunting the first night and a decent pig came in after 15 minutes, you take it rather than waiting to size up another bunch?
Assuming it was a 1 pig hunt, that is.
Many times, they'll say you can shoot 3 but you don't see but a couple doing your hunt.
Just curious in regards the quantity question, I guess.
Thanks for the details. Do we just open the gate and drive in?
I will park my family in Carrizo Springs and grab a couple of chairs from the local Wally world. I may be going back and forth just to make sure my five year old hasn't burned the city down so I will be able to get some more. Class VI run!
Tracy (Ranger) Green
And gee whiz Ed! I thought my 300 Win Mag was going large.
The rain will bring the temps down to the 70s, which is ten to fifteen degrees warmer than it is right now for me. It just may be the coolest thing to get a pig in a thunderstorm. I will call it "Thor" when I am eating it for breakfast. It will be back in the 90s on Saturday.
LOL it's 23 degrees here and snow today Tom what was the deal at the gate just open it and drive in? Tracy you don't need to buy chairs there will be enough between whats at the ranch and what others bring
We were 86 today and now sitting at 78. Just poured a martini and sitting out back with my wife. Have the Yosemite's ready to scope the axis and whitetail that will mosey by. Burgers on the Weber later.

Bob I would not hesitate to shoot the first, or one out of the first group you see. These pigs are spooky as hell, and you may only see one group in a given evening.
However....my first night on stand two big ones came in, I lit them up too early and spooked them. Ten minutes later a sounder came in, I had them lit up and dead to rights, but invented another way to spook them with noise....ten minutes after that a lone boar came in.....by then I'd used up all my bad luck, and he got the 223ai express
The following morning a sounder came in just at shooting light....all about the same size so I picked one out that didn't have others standing behind it, and shot it. Pig #1 was 125, pig # 2 was 85
Second evening on stand a tired ass looking three legged pig came in at last light and I let him slide. A sounder came in shortly after, and again I lit them up too early!
Once they come in, let them eat for about 5+ minutes!
Soooooo, I don't know if that helps or not, you can be as selective, or not, as you choose...
As for driving through the gate, its a locked up deal and the reason he wants us there at 2:00 is so he can let us in and doesn't have to keep running back and forth to get us. He wont have guides or help till the next day so try to be on time and make it easy for him

I wish that was the quote next to my high school photo. Talk about achievement and a life well lived.
I like you love to cook. I like you, I suspect, hate doing the dishes. Here it just works. She does the latter, Tony and I do the former. Carrie runs the fairly large yard, I pay for a house cleaning couple. Done.

Could you or someone else clarify this? It seems to me highly unlikely that we will all arrive at 2 pm at the gate to be let in. I would hope that there is a window in which you should arrive instead.

Ain't hard to arrive at 2, just stop along the way and suck down enchiladas or fajitas until it's time to go.

I'm riding in with Ed, and I trust his sense of timing, plus Ive learned to REALLY trust his sense of where the best enchiladas and fajitas are.....
Our flight does not get in to San Antonio until 11:20 so we may be a bit after 2 to the ranch gate.Hopefully there will be cell service to call to open the gate. Joe
So I am getting excited but I am still unclear of the rally point. I do not have GPS and Google maps/satellite shows a compund with features (pool, pond, fire structure)off Dunckle Road. Dunckle Rd hits 395 but I cannot see a gate from street view. Will everybody just be hanging out on the side of 395 waiting for a gate to open? How should we link up?
I received a nice little package today. It was sent by Joe for my "hospitality" as I am handling the airport pick-up, delivery and overnighters for he, Tom and Carl. It's from a proud Ohio producer that's been making it for 145 years. Looks killer and, though not necessary, many thanks Joe.
After me scorching my head at the Arizona meet last month, I loaded a permanent hat in my truck yesterday. First burn of the year with major peeling. This after maybe 6 hours in it then I got a loaner.

Ed Joe sent me that gift pack of ice cream after his visit here this summer it is outstanding!!!
Graeter's Ice Cream is god's way of telling us he loves us!
Be very careful about how you share it. Last time I shared Graeter's with bgcatty and family, there was not much left to be had by the time it was my turn for rations

It happens that way a lot, now they started packing in those single-serving pints. You just throw the fuggin' lid away, & suck the whole thing down in a single sitting.
I don't plan on sharing much but maybe Joe, Tom and Carl might get some with their stay. I am thinking the coffee as I type. There were times in college when my room mate and I would take a butcher knife across a half gallon jug of cheap chitt and enjoy.
I'm the world's worst planner, Bob. Not even sure we were going to come through SA this time. Was figuring on coming in, the way we came out last year. Pat pointed us the way, and I'd have to go back and take a look at it, but it seems we more or less went straight East from CC and out through Houston.
I'll shoot you a Text a little later after I've mapped it out this morning.
Didn't we see it on one of our Pat ordered paper plate runs?
3 hour road trip from SA??
I'm thinking 2 ish hours...wait you're driving 3 1/2
I have the coordinates to the gate already pre programed into the Garmin so we will be good to go,That Tom Tom that kept telling us to turn after we had passed the turn is schit canned. It did enable us to see some beautiful scenery from Tenn-TX
But, but we always share the ice cream even if Mountain Goat has to drive to the store and get more ice cream! In fact we just bought some more Graeters today!
fixing to head to my buddy's ranch over in duval to try and get this 45-70 on target its close but still shooting high, didn't have time to finish siting it last time. one problem i noticed is that i'm practically bottomed out on left windage, i'm thinking something is not square. he has a bunch of boy scouts over there, so going to shot some skeet with them. did you know they have girls in boy scouts now>
I guess there's a reason that my165 TTSX's came-in Friday to the local Cabla's. They weren't slated to arrive 'til 3/9, which meant I wasn't going to have ammo for the Marlin X7 .30-06. As of this am, I've got 30 rounds assembled and ready to go, for a rifle that won't mind the rain in the least.
I was going to bring the 700 Classic in .300 Savage, but now I can keep it purty for a li'l while longer.
It looks like Ready & I will be, "gettin' our redneck on" with the Marlin X guns. And here you all thought Germans shot nuttin' but Merkels & Mausers...
Im pretty well packed. Got to work tomorrow have a doctors appointment Tuesday morning. After Im done at Docs im headed South. Think Im gonna overnight in Amarillo Tx. This kidney stone has kicked my ass. I think I have passed it but I still feel like Schitt and have no energy. But I will still be there Wednesday.
Rain down there Tuesday night 90% chance, so rain may not happen that night. Wednesday--40% am, 70% wed evening. Thursday-am 80% pm-40% Friday am- 20%, pm- 60% Sat am Sunny, pm clear 0%. Sunday clear. Going to be a great time. Will bring a light rain gear in blue of course, top only.
Same thinking here, the 7mm-08 Montana I toted for Aoudad last year and it's dead on & ready to roll with some 120 gr Ballistic tips.
Of course the AR-10 heavy metal rifle DGAF about weather so, it may get carried most of the time, wearing an illuminated reticle scope and a big azz light It really likes 155gr Scenars
Poobs, what are these blinds like? Are they generally boxes with a roof, or go to hell wire cages with torn up black plastic on them? I never got rain caps for my scope.

I hope you feel better, it would suck if it didn't pass yet.
Since it's going to be warm this week, I wonder what the bugs are like down there. I'm thinking of bringing my Therma-cell. I got it out and realized I'm out of butane. I'm gonna hit Dick's today, I think they have it in stock.

Brian the ones I was in are box blinds...might leak a tad at the corners, but a vast improvement over hog wire/tarps....

Thanks Tom, last year I had a steady stream of water coming through a hole in the roof directly on my head. It was so much water, that I got wet through my rain suit.
Also, you'll be happy to know that I couldn't find my Bubba Buddy for rifle cartridges, so you don't have to worry about disqualifying me in the pig dink-a-thon.
That was a day on the lake back in the 80's Started out a cool chilly morning and temps got up into the mid 80's so I had to improvise as jeans and long sleeve shirt was roasting me
I've got problems. Just got the phone call my Brother-in-Law just had a heart attack. He didn't make it. I may have to go to Virginia for the funeral. I let you know when I know more.
Just talked to my sister, she says go hunting. Services will be in Pittsburgh in early summer. I'm headed out early in the AM, plan on spending the Tuesday note in FT. Stockton. See you at the @ 2PM on Wednesday.
Good deal Bob. I talked with my Doc today and they dont think the appointment for tomorrow is necessary so I will be headed south with the sunrise. Will make the trip more enjoyable getting a early start.
that sucker was mad and trying to get me, decided against crawling into the brush after him, he stood his ground next to a old mesquite, only way for me to get to him was on my hands and knees.

Just catching up. My condolences to your extended family. Looking forward to meeting you.
Truck is packed, bag is packed and my son's (cooking fools) want to make the meal when Tom, Carl and Joe arrive. Elder son is a chef at a restaurant in Tyler while wrapping up his studies. He insists that he will not grill a steak beyond medium rare. I told him he will be fine. He advised that more than half the folks at his restaurant want medium well or well? Texas??? He heads back to school on the Sunday we return and wants to leave us with elk chili. OK. Dear wife will require some beans though. Sorry.
Ed, glad to hear your song will be there! He's right about no more than Med. rare....I had an idea for the steaks but him being a pro chef I'll bet his idea is better! Im packed and getting on the plane way too early in the morning, so Im signing off here pretty quick ....will call you on arrival!

See the rest of you boys in camp!
Tom,
I know you wanted to cook but the boy's want you all as quests. They are flatazz badazz kids as you will see. I will pour drinks unless one wants one of the goofy things Joe is eyeballing. Those are Joe's. Dear wife will enjoy these internet friends sipping her wine enjoying the vibe. It may drop enough in temp that we can light the fire ring. My youngest and four friends were here on an overnighter Friday night and we ate the hell out of Costco 1/4# dogs over the fire. I am damn so looking forward to this trip, rain or shine.
Just got into El Paso for the night. Rained on in Central Californis, blown about crossing the Mojave. Ice on the roads from Seligman to Flagstaff. Absolutely gorgeous across the Painted Desert. Blown around again along the Rio Grande. Exhausted. Sorry about your loss Bob. Hopefully this week will help in the healing.
San Antone and the type 506 hunting license tomorrow.See everyone around 2:00 on Wednesday.
Check this out, gents. I'm going through TSA security check and I get motioned to front of line. Thought it was because of TSA pre approval or I was about to be in a jam. Turns out the TSA guy thought my Red Oxx knapsack logo was a Trident Seal logo. I quickly spoke up with the truth and he still let me proceed. I said my physical shape must have made you think so. He replied by saying he thought it might have been some 30 year reunion thing. With him letting me go first, he could have called me fat ass for all I would have cared.
Ahh have my wifi back I think so this message is possible. Raining and very bad weather currently. Not sure what that's going to do for my leaving time. Looked at motels in Junction, about full right now. Looked in Uvalde about full plus I really don't want to unload most of the stuff into a motel room for safety from someone breaking into my Jeep. So looks l will stay in Brownwood area for the night at farm in my trailer. If I get up early enough in the morning, should be able to make the last of the trips 300 miles in time to get into the ranch at 2:00pm. Tornado out here last night NW of me.

Started packing the Jeep last night, and then started moving stuff to the F150 I can fit all the chairs inside the truck cab, so they'll stay dry and clean, versus on the hitch carrier of the Jeep
For all the other guys out in internet land. I'm taking my lap top but will not under any reason leave it out for other jokester to use. Want to take pics. with my phone, Run them up to photo bucket, then post here while we are out there. I really don't know if the area has enough computing power to do that. Wifi is supposed to be real slow and there will be 25 other people using wifi at the same time.
So we are going to see.
You guys have a good week. Our group will be under control, Except for Bobby.
I just headed into town for a few last minute supplies. Decided a plate of chilaquiles would start the day well. Old Yoli will be serving said plate in five minutes. Rained like hell last night and still going on and off.
Just got into Oklahoma raining hard my lawn chairs will be wet
The warm TX sun will dry them out. Hopefully it's not raining that hard down there. It might be mud bogging time. I just hope it doesn't keep us in the lodge on Thursday.
Running 90 mph listening to Waylon and Chris Stapleton. Don't get much better.
did i tell you about waking up onetime somewhere in Vermont about 4 in the morning, and Leighton going 95 in his taco and him nodding off. i woke up real quick.

Well I've got a room in Abilene Texas so I don't to worry about falling asleep driving. I recall some of Leighton s pics of his suburban on its side so you're story might explain that.:
I'm near Brownwood, Tx. big 100 miles from the home. I think Charles will pass me on the way down. He just may get up real early Charles in a grey Jeep if you pass me on 83. Have to drive about 100 miles to get to Hwy 83 then straight south.

100 miles from you Charles, SE.
I'm pulling out about 8 am. Should give me plenty of time plus I gotta stop and pickup some 20gauge shells somewhere.
Funny, my phone is my hot spot for this lap top. Goes from 3 G to 1x. Back and forth. And just think Bob S., Dan and Pat are right now eating one fine meal in old San Antonio.
tjm10025 and I made it to DeSoto tonight. We drove through the line of storms and we had no major problems on I-30 and I-40. See you all tomorrow and safe travels.
BTW FWIW google maps despises Dallas and east Texas, if you get off the highway good luck trying to get back on.
It's now 10 pm Tues, and I'm in Menard, with the rain is making abominable noises on the motel roof.
Departed the upper Upper Peninsula Sun afternoon, overnight Austin MN. Wichita with my bother Mon pm. Tuesday AM I got hailed on north of OKC. By traveling 81 south from Hennessey to Bowie Tx I avoided I-35 and then wiggled SW through Stephenville & Brownwood. The stretch from Brady to Menard whitened the knuckles a bit with 00 buckshot-sized hail, frequent scenic lightning bolts, and wind gusts jumping the Taco half-lanes sideways.
Can a native Texan identify this squall as either a toad-strangler or a duck-drownder?
For the record: (Note that Crystal City & the ranch are in south central Zavala Co.)

I don't have the coordinates but I just drove to it. take the Crystal City exit from n 83 (Lake Street). Drive east to it ends on N. 7th Street (also signed as FB 582). Go north a few blocks to the next signal (E. Crockett Street, also FM 582). Turn right /east on FM 582 for about 2 miles, then right (south) on 395, Go about 100 yards and the gate is on the left.

'Ranger Green made it along with 25 others. Cloudy, all have sighted in and now just playing with guns. Nice place.
Got everyone tucked in for the night, which will be over at 5:00 o'clock.
All sleeping like Nancies - blissfully unaware of the steady rain soaking in. The night is balmy, the pigs will love it.
Getting everyone sighted in was over quick, but fun. A lot of nice and practical firearms have gotten the nod this time - after a look at the weatherforcast.
The dinner at night -
We ate great and talked - meeting new guys and getting cought up with longtime friends. We toasted the opportunity for both and remembered departed friends.
We are aiming high - striving to excel. There is no Stop in us, just Go (Thanks Delta - great flight and slogan).
Everybody took their medicine -
As Prof. Broemel put it in the famous movie of "Die Feuerzangen-Bowle"
"With school, it is same as with medicine. It must taste bitter, lest it should work."
. The rain Wed, Thurs, & Fri has turned the two-tracks to the blinds into mud bogs. Photo shows the a typical mud-coating on truck just returned from retrieving hunters from blinds Friday AM.
Rumors identify it as caliche mud. It's slippery, so some of us skidded and landed on our backsides when we stepped out of trucks at the blinds. It's sticky and gloppy; the whitetails that show up at the feeders appear to have baseballs rather than hooves at the ends of their legs. At least one truck was stuck in mud up to the rocker panels in the middle of a ranch road. Some of the attendees with developed vocabularies can elaborate colorfully on the theory and application of this mud.
No he's acting like a perfect gentleman. Nasty mud is not fun to parade around in. Some taking a nap before afternoon hunt. Others are at rifle range running lead down range.
We are starting to see the sun off and on today. Roads and all grounds are a muddy mess and will be for rest of trip. Will take a few days for things to dry out. What this does is makes the trip to certain areas not possible.
My up load from phone to photo bucket is real slow so will save my pics. for when I get home. I'm 10 or 12 pics behind in the uploads so that would be hours to get uploaded out here at the wifi speed of this place with all of us on line. Phones do work great at this ranch. The group seems to be very happy at the number of hogs on this place.
Lots of other things seen also. Like the biggest turkey I have ever seen, rabbits all over, WT., red deer, bob whites and African types of animals.
I had a little scared hog come to my area last night and run into 20/30 turkeys. The turkeys won in 10 seconds and he was gone.
I'm having a good time and would for sure come back to this place to hunt. All here will have there own war stories when they return home.

It's Montmorillonite clay--essentially the same thing as bentonite that is used in drilling mud. Enjoy!
Had a great time...sign me up for next year already. Just got home,it took a while to find our guns at the airport. Some dumb $hit let our guns sit in the back for 40 minutes or so without saying anything. We had to ask all around to track them down only to find out they were just sitting in the back.
had a hella good time, just woke up been asleep since i got home around noon. edm and i stayed up till 6 this morning then only got a couple hours sleep.

Edm Is a easy man to talk to. Had a lot of great conversations with him. Thanks for the shrimp Roger.
Was a great hunt full of great people. Lots of pigs, good food and good beverages. Glad to talk to everyone I met last year and meet all the new guys. GeeDubya and BirdWatcher are both both a pleasure to talk with and a wealth of knowledge.
Thanks to Dan for putting this on again and for the great briscit. Pat nailed the shrimp that Roger brought.
Colorado Bob is a fine shotgun shooter and it was pleasure visiting with him about Colorado.
Bunch of greats folks
Shout out to Lawson aka Junior. The Marine Corp will soon be getting a fine young man. Thanks in advance for your service. I heard someone ask you why you were joining the Marines and you Stated "Because I Love My Country" That dang near brought me to tears. Best of luck to you young man. I know your Parents are proud.
Many thanks to Dan for picking this place and organizing it. It went very well, and I'd welcome the chance to attend again next year. Thanks to everyone who contributed food & drinks. Enjoyed the shooting as well, thanks to all who brought cool guns to shoot and admire, especially Bob and Gordon, who brought some memorable guns, like the Ross Rifle and the Shiloh.
It really great seeing everyone - a group of guys who all come from very different backgrounds, yet to a man they are fine gentlemen in every sense of the word. It was also neat seeing Steven and Lawson again. With young people like that out there, maybe our country has a bright future after all.
I wish I'd brought a longer camera lens, there was some wonderful wildlife to view. One of those colorful green jays:

Indeed, and we would all be proud to have such a son
Since the place was only about 90 minutes away from me I headed out there after work Friday to stop in and say hello, intending to return that same night. Needless to say I ended up staying all day Saturday too, returning after the great dinner Saturday night.
After everyone left for the blinds about 5:30am Saturday morning I waited outside in back of the range to listen to the sounds of the brush country and to watch the sun rise about an hour later; an absolutely beautiful dawn, one of the best I can recall.
At these Campfire gatherings I am always surprised to find how well you can get along with someone you have talked to for years yet never met in person.
The other thing is, I am humbled to be able to call such an exceptional group of people my friends.
Sounds like your get-together/pig hunt was a blast. I gotta make one of these someday..... In the interim, I reckon to settle for the mini-po-boy-version. Some guy stopped by for a hog-prairiedog shoot. We also had a blast.....Thanks for a fun day, Ed.
Great hunt and time with everyone. Company was great, weather was great the last couple days, and plenty of critters.
Here's a chuckle for ya. I've joined Bob's "retired Navy SEAL club," apparently.
Just got settled in my seat for flight San Antonio to Charlotte when a flight attendant approaches me with, "The Captain needs to speak with you."
OK, sure. No idea.
The attendant direts me to the gangway and the Captain is standing there, out of earshot of the crew. He looks agitated and serious. Went like this:
Me: "Hi -." Cuts me off.
"What agency you with?"
"Hm?"
"What agency are you with?"
He's a bit red in the face. I cock my head like a dog, looking at this guy.
"What government agency do you work for?" He's clutching a piece of white paper with old-school courier printer type on it, arranged in blocks of text.
"I'm not sure what you mean" I reply.
Now he's looking right pissed off.
"Where's your weapon?" the Captain demands.
I paused a moment looking this guy in the eye, analyzing WTF he could be getting at. I did realize earlier I'd forgotten and left my rifle ammo in a drop mag in my hunting pack, rather that put it back "in the factory box" as the American Airlines desk insisted it be when I'd checked in. Did he have a hard-on for that, I wondered? Nah.
I sighed, put my hands in front of me to describe the shape of my bag. "Look, I've got a big green duffle bag full of hunting gear and a hard double rifle case if that helps you."
"Is your weapon in the belly of this aircraft," he demands, still deadly serious and looking worked up. It strikes me how silly a question it is, being as I'm the passenger on his plane. I don't deal with what bags go where, afterall, long as they show up. So I give him my best Columbo shrug.
He's staring me down when a moment later his shoulders slump and he ceases with the tough guy schtick. He's looking down at the manifest again. "There's been some miscommunication. You can go back to your seat."
So I guess I ended up on some secret squirrel list by accident. Would speculate maybe weapon carrying gov't employees are supposed to check in with the pilots and since I didn't, he was in a tizzy about it? Funny chit now, but man was he all worked up about it for a couple minutes. I kind of wanted to F with him right back, being as I hadn't anything to hide, but playing head games with your pilot isn't the brightest move before takeoff I reckon, so whatever.
And I didn't even have a trident on my carry on like Bob did!
He's staring me down when a moment later his shoulders slump and he ceases with the tough guy schtick. He's looking down at the manifest again. "There's been some miscommunication. You can go back to your seat." --------
You're a far more patient and tolerant man than I am, Dan.
He wouldn't have simply gotten away with his "miscommunication" comment were that to have been me speaking to that presumptuous, pompous ass.
Great seeing you again and best wishes to you on your Montana gig. I could see your happiness.
Pat, being the generous man he is bought me a bunch of stuff from Bucees, including a T-shirt I saw my stepson wearing this morning before I even unpacked the damn thing.
Welcome to my life.
And our other Pat, bought me some beaver balls.
I took Bucees snacks to every blind.
On top of that, Pat also saved me the TSA hassle by letting me use his 22-250 that was just a lethal bang-flopper on pigs. From the TSA nightmares I heard Joe and Brian suffered at Dulles, Pat likely saved me a couple extra hours at the airport.
The highlight of the hunt for me was sharing a blind with Ltppowell. We enjoyed the scenery and Pat was learning me on hog tendencies. The cherry on the cake was for Pat and I to take a double with the 1-2-3 count and the shots barking out in as close to unison as possible.Pat head shooting his boar contorted and facing backwards and me ventilating my boar thru the heart with the .444(which BTW leaves a very distinctive blood trail)
Also Ltppowell calling predators with his mouth. Calling in a coyote at 100 yds and I just instinctively pulled up the marlin 444 as it was crossing the dirt road and Pat stopped it for a split second and I dumped it flat!
He said he was laughing while shooting them that morning.
The ol' 376 Steyr kinda thumps them, Ya'.
First three were DRT.
This one was moving a pretty good clip and I caught her a bit back. The impact rolled her but she got up and took off like a shot. Good blood for first twenty yards or so then nothing. Luckily it had been raining for three days and the ground was soft, so I was able to track. Seems the guts popped out and sealed the exit wound, so no blood.
all in all, a pretty good pile-o-pigs,
and yeah I was laughing at myself. I only brought 6 cartridges with me. I still had pigs coming and going and was out of bullets. I was thinking to my self "you dumb-azz". Somehow it struck me funny enough that I almost fell out of my chair .
The Campfire has some outstanding wing shots! Pat,coloradoBob,7mmMato,Derek,Bullshooter and Stephen don't miss much and many others also were more than proficient with a shotgun! I was at my best with an energy drink and cigar, shotgun not so much

I hear ya, Bob, but recognized in that moment that although he was a douche about it, he didn't know me from Adam, he was just following a protocol about a protocol and at least he recognized the protocol was evidently phugged. Reminded me of good times in the Army - a little protocol, a lot of bluster. Anyway, there were no "damages" but for minor inconvenience. Hey, am laughing about it still.
I passed a couple of decent sized pigs Thursday morning. That was a mistake, because they weren't so easy to come by, thereafter. Thursday evening the feeder was covered up in deer - some Texas whitetails(who still had their antlers) and Sitka deer. A group of nice eating size pigs trotted out. That ended quickly when an 8pt whitetail put his head down, and bluff charged the pigs, who spun 180's and ran like hell. I said, "thanks Deer"
Saw a massive Red Stag come out. He was twice as tall as the whitetails, and probably 5-6x as heavy. I'd love to see him in 5-6 months
I probably saw 40-50 turkeys all told. The males were gobbling and strutting - and the season is a week away, darn it.
Friday night I lined up on a small pig, but it took off right as I fired and he was wounded. I tracked him a while, tried another shot, but hit a tree as I tried to get him in the brush. That left me pretty disappointed, also wondering if the 155 Scenars were too tough for small pigs.
Sat night it was sunny and warm. Lots of birds out, including the green jay I posted earlier, and a bazillion bright red Cardinals. I had what sounded like 30 songdogs singing within a 1/4 mile of me; wish I'd carried a predator call.
I finally saw a large group of pigs cross the road about 400 yards away, heading in my general direction. The birds at the feeder started getting nervous about 10-15 minutes later, so I got the AR10 (now loaded with 150gr Accubonds) ready. The large group trotted out, got almost to the feeder, and a couple birds spooked, which caused the whole group to spin a 180 and start running back toward the brush. By then I was on a decent sow, held low on the running pig's throat, and hit her square in the heart. I found a good blood trail right away, and found her 40 yards away. That was one of the better fast shot's I've ever made, and it felt good after the previous day's failure.
Got home in the early AM. I had a great time. I'm in for next year. I'll bring more cases clay pigeons & a couple more flats of shot shells. Everything was prefect on this hunt with the exception of the rain. But that even made an adventure of getting to the blinds. I may have to umpire a few more softball games to get more mad money. I saw dandy axis bucks & blackbuck.
Gentlemen, Thanks to all for being kind to my family(yes, I made the cardinal sin of bringing the wife and kids along, if only to introduce them to my hunting dream).
We are still on the road. Made El Paso late Sunday night. The wife cleaned out the bank account at the boot outlets but my family has footwear for the next two years! Headed up through Alamogordo near White Sands when fatigue and hog hunting happiness crept up on me. I let the wife drive some while I napped. I woke up halfway to Kansas. We barely made Gallup late last night.
So today we explore northern Arizona. I'll do all the driving.

Can't wait till next year. You guys rock.
T, It was a pleasure meeting you and your lovely family. Stay safe out there on the road.
OK dudes...I just got home late last night after a pretty normal day of flying ( which is to say miserable...)
A BIG thanks to EdM and his lovely bride for their hospitality and taxi service. Ed had excellent taste in everything, so for a couple days I was surrounded by cool stuff!
Final tally on hogs, according to Kevin, was 48.....excellent considering the difficulty we had getting around.
It was a real pleasure seeing all you guys again, and everyone was on their best behavior, including Bobby. Didn't have to pass the hat for bail out of a Mexican jail or anything like it.
Some members were quite anxious to get involved with the impromptu Pig Dink-a-thon......and the competition was pretty fierce, but Colorado Bob took the honors with his dink, which literally won by the hair on its chinny chin chin.....Sized up next to Bobbys jack rabbit, the pig wasn't quite as big..... A couple dinks were killed by collateral damage ....
We should have had a big pig contest, EdM killed one that Im sure scaled over 200 pounds, and so did another member, plus more than a few brought in that would top 100 and a gob of perfect "eaters"......60-70 pounders.
I of course had to hold up my end for the stunt shooters of America, using a .223AI with 60 grain Nosler Ballistic tips.
I'd like to say "thank you" to everyone for the hospitality and kindness, especially Dan for setting it up. Roof and Sand Critter were perfect roommates and we never had problems with anyone needing the bathroom. Also, thanks to Roger for the shrimp and Dan for doing up the brisket. It was great. You guys are fine gentlemen.
I guess I had beginner's luck. I killed 4 pigs and 1 coyote. My first pig was wounded in the neck by someone else and was infected, so we had to throw it away, so I got a freebee for target practice. It figures out of 10 pigs, I'd pick the bad one. As much as people rag on me about my Encore 30-06, it performed perfectly with all neck and head shots on the pigs and a good shoulder shot on the coyote.
I believe the protocol for handling firearms by the airlines is that they need to check ID before handing them over to you. When we got to San Antonio, the baggage handler just opened the door and threw out the guns to us and we simply picked them up and walked away without showing ID. That was a little disturbing. When we got to Dulles International, we waited for about 45 minutes for our guns and they never showed. Roof went to the United counter and found that they were scanned off of the plane, so he got a guy to look for them. They were simply sitting back there, but nobody brought them out, so he got them for us. Evidently, there's some jack nut back there that's supposed to do that, but was asleep at the wheel. There was also a third case from another guy there also. I thought his head was going to explode. United Airlines is going to get an email from me as soon as I get caught up with work.
I'm working on my pictures and will have some as soon as I get caught up with work.
I enjoyed it guys, and pencil me in for next year. Thanks.
That big boar had some nice cutters, all right. He'd make a decent Euro mount.
I noticed the two pigs I passed up Thursday morning were not spooky. They all grew a lot spookier after folks started shooting. I still laugh when I think of that 8 point buck running the young pigs away from the feeder, even though they were good eating size, and he was out of season
I heard they had 200 pigs on the ranch before we got there? We put quite a dent in them
Im guessing they had more Patrick, and with all the new little ones everyone was seeing there will be a LOT more soon! Plus, the road conditions kept us from getting to three other ranches they hunt!
One day, I was just getting ready to squeeze on a pig and a shot rang out close by and the pigs ran about 50 yards, but they made a fatal mistake and came back.
Made it to Peoria last night safe and sound. Stopped in Texarkana for a night with tjm10025 then continued on. It was a two day trip and in total drove 1,540 miles back. I also went through all the meat I harvested and dropped off some at the local food bank who were ecstatic about getting some fresh pork for easter today.
Had a great time with all of you and look forward to the next one!
Pictures to follow.
PS: bgcatty nearly keeled over when he saw my shotgun covered in carbon this morning .
had a great time and very much enjoyed meeting everyone. Count me in if the roster is not already full for next year.
Being Just Another Porker Perforator From Texas, that hunts the "Petting Zoo" 99% of the time, usually by myself, getting to meet all the folks from the Fire made my hunt. Killing hoglets was a bonus.
Pretty good pig if I do say so myself. Forty-five or more hoglets were hung and skinned, but not this guy.
When I walk up to a pig and I can smell him 15' away, I don't bother with the meat. That was the case with this one. The guides said, no thanks, and cut his head off. As it would not fit in Ingwe's carry-on he obliged me with the head. I'm gonna do a European mount!
Thanks Tom.
It was a ball, hope to see you and the gang again next year.
This was my 4th pig. There's nothing like an ice cold Bud Light after a good day hunting.
From left to right, Me, Roof, and 7mmMato. This was the night that our guides rack on the back of his truck broke. Sandcritter, 7mmMato and I each killed 1 pig and Roof killed 2. When he picked up me and Sandcritter, Mato already had his pig on the rack. Sandcritter killed a sow that probably weighed 200 lbs. The rack was already lose. We loaded our pigs on there and went to pick up Roof. When we got there, the rack was still hanging on by a thread and Sandcritter's pig was missing. We had to put the pigs in the back of the truck and then go find the missing pig. It was only a few hundred yards away in the middle of the trail laying in about a foot of mud.
I found out Nikon has started making a 200-500 F5.6 zoom for their DSLR cameras. It's moderate in price, fairly light and compact, and folks are raving about the optical quality. Might have to obtain one. I've got a Sigma that tops at 420mm, but it's not that good optically.
Damn, that's what the weird birds were. Saw them also. Turkeys ran them off, over and over, then the buzzards chased them. Not many birds seem to like them.
As others have said, it was a great trip capped off with a nice time at the EdM abode with Tom, Carl and Joe. Joe stayed another day so was put to work. Looking forward to next year.

Brian Thanks for the Pics. I forgot my camera so all I got was some crappy cell phone pics. Had a great time partnered up with you guys. Sorry I always rode up front but at least I did get the gates.
Home last night, and crashed. First opportunity to check in.
As others have said: Thank you Dan. You are a prince among men for organizing this, and a hell of a good cook. Thank you, Roger, for the "swimps." They were outstanding.
What a pleasure to see you guys again. And a couple of new friends, too. Ranger, your family is delightful. Carl, congratulations again and here's to your continued success in your field.
I've got to say, the weather was a challenge, but since I'm not one of the guys that got his truck stuck axle-deep in the mud, I coped pretty well, I thought. At least dehydration was never a problem.
I love Texas. I have a great time every time I go.
Just got home. 1:30 am here, so just a short list of things learned on the trip:
1) Not all deer run from pigs. 2) Drinking beer all day, you get drunk. Drinking Coors all day, gets you "imbibed". 3) Never holler "Whoa" in a tight spot or take a new-to-you-rifle hunting. 4) Regarding airline travel - it helps a speedy return, when:
- you take your time in the aile to pack and repack your suitcase or do yoga stretches upon boarding.
- you take the time to visit the third thrift shop, ot get another burger, while the boarding crew is on their seventheen "last" call for the flight to Casa Blanca.
- you complain about the rectangular wire things standing in the way (the go/no go gauges for carry on luggage) and then try to benchpress your case into the overhead bins.
5)Regarding coming home - to have left your keys behind, so you find yourself burglaring your own home, only to be later be told by the wife, who is happy to have you back but is away herself, that she left a key out for you.

Charles, PM me your email address and I can send them to you.
It wasn't a problem riding in the back. Matter of fact, that one night when the rack broke, I was so covered in mud and blood and pig schit, I almost just stayed in the back of the truck with the pigs after we got them loaded for the third time.
You know how it is with the fella behind the camera. He never gets his picture took. It was a real pleasure meeting GW, and tipping a bourbon or three.
The same morning Jr. got his pig, I got one too. The rifle is one of the run that Darrik had at Whittaker's. Tikka T3 Superlight chambered for 260 remington. I was shooting 130 grain Nosler Accubonds.

I was talking to Sakohunter264, a friend that had contacted Dan about making the trip, about the experience. I told him that I could not think of one negative experience the whole time, other than having to leave and come back to "reality". Absolutely fine accommodations, plenty of food, lots of game. However what made the trip was the guys that were there. A-number-one class acts, each and every one. Twenty-six guys together from Wednesday night thru Sunday Morning and no tension or problems that I was aware of.
That shows you are a tolerant and classy individual!
And here all this time I thought I was the lucky one, as I'm just another porker perforator from Texas, the land of Gates,High Fences and Petting Zoo's, and you're the storied and exalted Poobah!!!!
you were imbibed I was with you and I still got up for "school" the next morning besides you'd think a midnight dip in the 55 degree pool would have set you straight
I got some pics up to Photobook, but it's not agreeing with my iPhone, and I've gotta board a flight soon. The full write-up will have to wait 'til tomorrow afternoon.
Suffice it to say 'Twas a wonderful time. I owe a big shout-out to geedubya for loaning his FoxPro to EdM & me, allowing me to take my first coyote. And I owe EdM a debt of gratitude for his hospitality & forbearance.
And a Ready - I'll call a snoring truce, if you will.
That said, I have never seen a luggage rack on a hearse... My youngest son was just "oodling" over the #1. I am guessing it will see the next hog hunt.
Got home about an hour ago. I can do no better to say my thanks for this great gathering. Dan, you work wonders, even bringing rain to parched lands. You guys are great and so is Texas!
By the way, the first billbooard I saw in California had a photo of Desmond Tutu with a caption of how he is "a man leading us to pathways of peace. Teach peace."
Bob there is a little over a 1000acres just south of town here, that has over a mile of fence line shared with the King ranch. their only asking 50 million.

-------------------
If I could afford that, I'd take down the fence.
Is there a gold mine and oil on that 1000 acres?
Dan...as far as the living quarters go, you know the great room and kitchen are all I really care about.
Texas prime real estate is very bit as expensive as prime real estate in the DC suburban area.
Wow that would be great Bob. Looked up a few. From 5,000,000 down to 200,000 for just a small amount of land. Of course every time you come out here to the place it would be a business trip for law work. Wonderful area of Tx.
No river and the price will drop. Go west price will drop. Acreage only price will drop.
Lots of Texas for sale right now. The oil guys are cutting back some. Best of luck in the search.
East Texas around Lufkin looks pretty attractive for retirement. Nat'l Forrest, two big lakes nearby, Sam Rayburn & Toledo Bend, far enough from the coast to not get washed away...My sister & her husband are building out there.
I wouldn't retire there as my life's core loves are here in Va. I'm looking for a vacation and hunting-social meeting place while en route to the hunting and vacationing spots my son and I have enjoyed for 20 years. My preference is river front, 5-10 acres. I already have the blueprints for the house/pool/deck and patio to be built and a I'll leave it to my son who loves Texas more than his father does.
I pay the same air fare flying to Texas as I do our place in Naples.
I need to get my Arkansas raised wife to Texas so that she can see for herself my reasons. Right now her preference is a lake front home on one of two lakes in Va. A trip to Texas and maybe a hunt is in our near future as well as a few nights in Austin and San Antonio. I should have taken her to Pat's last Llano get together. That would have sold her.

Bob, I would second Patrick's idea. Anywhere around Lufkin, Diboll, Livingston area. Several rivers around there, but the Big Daddy is the Sabine ("suh-been" in Texican)that becomes both Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend. More hogs and deer than you can shake a stick at (that means a bunch), good people, low taxes and property values compared to the hellhole you are currently in but don't know it, and you're not far from Pat Powell, tex n cal, Sponxx, or me.

A man would have some top shelf neighbors in that area.
The Most Exalted Grand Poobah showed us how to sight-in, using a bona-fide Texas Rifle:
Then, I decided to test the accuracy of my bespoke, Post-'05 Marlin XL7 rifle (in the über-rare .30-06 chambering) by utilizing a new nut behind the trigger:
It appears that some misunderstood the dress code...
but a good time was had, nonetheless:
Some firsts for the trip:
First Blood with the Marlin:
First Double, ever. (And I dispute Colrado Bob's Dinkathon Trophy! This piglet was definitely smaller, "collateral damage" be damned!):
thank you. "Inebriated" was indeed to word I was looking for. Will not forget it again.
I knew that's what you were trying to say because we were talking about it at the range that day. That's why I put the pronunciation and definition on there too. It's a tough word for someone who's trying to learn English.
If you drink enough, it'll roll off your tongue easier.
... My youngest son was just "oodling" over the #1. I am guessing it will see the next hog hunt.
No question it will see some action. The useful thing about the .38-55 is depending on the groove dia there's a huge variety of bullets one can shoot in it. And that rifle can take any load the brass can take...

Couple of damn handsome men right there!
Joe I remembered that somebody had shot a striped dink, and it rivaled the winner, but the collateral damage cost style points....
However.....The stripes replace the lost style points , so I owe you an airline bottle of Crown Royal, and you and Colorado Bob will have to share the limelight....
I feel I slighted you and shall make every effort to regain your confidence in me as a judge.
( Please bear in mind Rebecca Creek altered my judgement capabilities...)
Outside Boerne new braunfel tx bob you'll thank me later.
less then and hour to san antonio, in the hill country, 45 minutes to gruene hall, on the Guadalupe river, 60 minutes to fredericksburg, and much much more
A veritable internet sensation thanks to you guys!
On my way home, getting off the plane for a layover in Minneapolis I was stopped by a gentleman who reps for Norma, he recognized me from the 'fire and was of course gracious in his praise, and humbled by my presence.
Soooooo....if any of you guys would like some of the above pics of me autographed, just run off a copy and send it to me with a $5 bill to cover postage and handling

Will the good gentleman from Upper Peninsula Michigan please pm me? I have some lead for you.
Carl, thanks again for the generous gift of the hog. The Uvalde game processors called and the "free range organic pork" (that's California code for wild pig) will soon be on it's way. You are thoughtful to feed my family. I will ensure the next rifle is fully tested and proofed before another hunt. Man, the minds that gather at these hunts! Louis Allen's "Burma" is on the way courtesy of Amazon. I'll be looking at an Ingram for the safe and a Buck for the hip. I am torn between upgunning as I have seen with my own eyes what a .444 can do but the 223 ttsx was so effective I may have to go both ways. I was glad my 6.5x55 worked as advertised. The experience level and the great advice alone made this hunt a bargain!
I found a picture (taken through the binocs) of an Aoudad checking out my freshly-felled boar:
He was kinda wary, but not enough so that he didn't go back to hoovering up all the "free" corn.
Another boar came to the edge of the scrub at last light, but he wanted no part of whatever had caused his comerade to lie very still on his side in the water hole. He high-tailed it outa there.
Tracy, my pleasure. Pig was shot with a 168 gr. TTSX, by the way, so it is even "california legal, free range organic pork". LOL. It was gratious of you to loan me your gun. The bow & arrow was good; just this indian not versed with this kind of bow, I guess...
Glad meeting you and family. If your girls are into food anything like my to two kids, you will soon be all out of "FROP" again. That means more hunting.
Can't help specifically but I suspect there are a couple of river front lots for sale where I am, 14 miles outside of Boerne. Carrie and I headed to the Guadalupe today to do a bit of fishing. No fish but a nice picnic with her. I am about midway between New Braunfels and Fredericksburg. A few miles as the crow flies to Guadalupe State Park.
Check out Lake Travis area and waterfront homes and let me know what you think.
No doubt Ed's place is beautiful. Knowing Ed, I'd expect such from him. Plus, I saw some pics.
This Lake Travis area appeals to me. Outside of Austin area, I believe.
Bob, I was just there Tuesday & Wednesday to visit my boy. Here's a picture from The Oasis on Comanche Tr., which bills itself as the Largest Outdoor Restaurant in the world:
It's a pretty area, to be sure. We drove all the way down Comanche Tr. to the park, and there were some awfully nice properties there.
But... the traffic around that area (West and Northwest Austin) was horrendous. The boy reports his 4.9 mile bus ride will sometimes take an hour and 10 minutes in the afternoons. Lotsa crappy chain restaurants, and simply miserable traffic at nearly every waking hour of the day. Maybe the other end of the lake is less congested.
EdM is 15-20 minutes from Boerne, but it's absolutely a charming little town. I was charmed, anyway.
Traffic like that would be a deal breaker for me, though.
I'm way too familiar with 1 hour 5 mile rides. It's much of the reason I search for my escape.
I came up through Dripping Springs & Bee Cave, cute li'l towns which aren't too far from the lake. I'm just not sure what level of services/shopping/dining you'd look to do. If you needed more than a little of that stuff, you'd likely have to go to the Austin suburbs, and the traffic seemed to me to increase pretty damned fast.
One of my cousins and her husband bought a house near Canyon Lake, which is a few miles NW of New Braunfels. It is a good sized lake and there are numerous estates/subdivisons around the lake. It's a an easy drive to San Antonio, Austin, etc.
It's also not far from the Rebecca Creek Distillery...
I took this pic of Joel's son Lawson, cause he's six months or less away from the most grueling up coming part of his life. Stint in the U.S. Marine Corp. Wanted him to remember how good that Honey Bun tasted before they are no more and 15 mile runs are easy.
All I learned was I do want a good camera and lens system for any future trips. So much different wild life is no place for an I-phone. Need that Zoom.

Gordon, my friend. You are so right about the changes that are upcoming in Lawson's life. He seems oblivious these days, but I know that in the months to come he will look back and think to him himself, "I wish life were as simple as simple as it were back then."
i guess there would be some regulations building along a river or lake. i thought about getting a house out on the island onetime, but realized even though we haven't taken a direct hit from a hurricane since 1980, it will only be a matter of time before we do.
I'm thinking it might have much to do with the river, supports, docks etc.,as well.
Just making sure Texas ain't going preppie green on me.
I don't know what you're seeing Bob, but FEMA regs are generally related to flood insurance...flood zones, how high it has to be, etc. With few exceptions, navigable water ways are public property of the State of Texas.
Individuals can not own land below the mean pool level of public waters. There are a few exceptions where it can be leased by the entity controlling (such as a river authority). Most docks and piers are floating. What you do on your property would be subject to local code. Long story short, you can't own anything under a lake or river (if it's a navigable waterway) in the State of Texas, just the land above it. (and I slept 10.5 hrs last night. )
I don't even want to think about what I'll bring next year as it seems a new rifle wanders into my safe every Jan-Feb God knows I don't need any thing more as all base are covered...but we all know need has nothing to do with a new rifle

It's Montmorillonite clay--essentially the same thing as bentonite that is used in drilling mud. Enjoy!
mudhen- Coming from a member named "mudhen", what else is there to do but consider this ID as expert and definitive.
I'm not convinced of Montmorillonite's sealing properties, however. During all of the 1700-mile trek home from Texas to the U.P., the mucky glop oozed from the rusty holes in my Taco's fenders like puss from under a scab. Bleah!

Those blinds like that are bought by the thousands in this state. Expensive to the normal guy like me. Used all over in the hunting operations on the ranches, some of the chairs were lacking. They need to make sure all blinds have used but good office type chairs. Damn metal chairs kill the butt.
Back to the real technical Sheitte. I just cleaned my 270 Kimber Montana, this after 60 or so rounds since purchased used here on the 'fire. A bit of load development prior to last falls elk hunt, maybe 30 - 40 rounds as I used Sammo's suggested load with the 140 TSX. Easy sub-1 incher and the majority closing in on 1/2". Of course I was "only" shooting multiples of three shot groups so who knows... I chased elk with it in Colorado and throttled a decent bull at just shy of 250 yards. Last week I head shot three hogs out to 150 yards, barrel uncleaned, scoped not confirmed. Today I cleaned the mud off of the rifle and the bore for the first time. Six patches of Sweets and I was done. A very good barrel indeed. This rifle ain't going anywhere.
I can sell all I own and stick with the Kimber 270 and my tweaked SS M70 375 H&H and sell the rest and be good for life. So what's with this new #1 I heard you have acquired?

You mean the reason why I don't have the above-mentioned Nikon 200-500 zoom lens?
Yes, a .38-55 #1, thanks to your help I believe Ingwe and 7x57Steve are familiar with them.
#1 Trivia, that's the largest bore in any of the "B" barrel contours - so probably one of the lightest 26" barreled #1's.
Relatively uncommon, somewhere between 275 and 350 were made for a distributor in 1989. Those who have actually shot them report they shoot very well. Not as rare as my .475 Turnbull, but somewhat more appropriate for Texas deer
I ordered brass, bullets and dies for it this morning. Not sure if I will scope it or not.

The .475 Turnbull was made in less than 100 #1's, according to Turnbull. It's a 26" C weight barrel. With scope mine weighs 9lbs 2 oz. The cartridge has 95% of the .458 WM's capacity...
So without the scope it's more or less a 7½ lb .470 Nitro. It is very handy, and the most accurate big bore I have ever shot.
Dan is the brisket master! I am still waiting for the pork to be processed. My in-laws are anxiously waiting. My father-in-law actually respects the fact that I got it by hunting.
I make jerky every year from venison. It's amazing how many folk that say they don't like deer meat ask me when the next batch of jerky will be ready. Pretty much the same with both breakfast sausage and smoked links.
Have yet to try the tenderloins. Donated the rest to the local food bank. They were very much appreciative of the donation and said it was used for easter dinner. Fed 60 needy people in the letter they sent confirming the donation and use of the meat.
I swung by Uvalde today, and picked up my pork. They do have a pretty impressive operation. Good sized building, and they are also a retail meat market, not just a wild game processor. You can look into the meat cutting area, and it appeared to be very clean and well organized.
I've not been to Uvalde previously. They have a place there on the main highway called the Oasis, which is sort of a mini Cabelas and Buc-ees rolled into one, but with a sit-down restaurant in the middle of the store. They had a good gun shop, with reloading supplies and a decent selection. They had Model 70 I'd not seen before; a Super Grade with a maple stock (quite nicely figured, too). It was a Portuguese model in .270; with 22" barrel (bummer). Were it a 7x57 I might have bought it.
Dan--I know it's early but do you think we're headed back to Pricky Pear next year? I know I really liked it there. Plan on probably doing a trip by myself.

I'm hoping so trying to work things out with Kevin the owner,I should be able to secure the booking but we had a few issues that occurred that Kevin needed to address with me. I really don't want to get into them as to not call anyone out but let's just leave that I sent Kevin some $ to cover the "problem(s)" I should have everything patched up and we will be invited back next March
I got my meat back from Uvalde last week. They did a real good job and the lady I dealt with was extremely nice. Everything was vacuum packed and in Styrofoam coolers with dry ice. The dry ice was all but gone, but the meat was still frozen. That's got to be the leanest pork I've ever had before.
I'm not sure about the shipping, it was about 60 lbs., but the meat was $285.00. The turn around was partially my fault. I got a new phone right before the hunt. She called me and left a message on Tuesday after we got home and I never got the message for another week when I figured out how to use this phone. They cut it up right away, but the sausage took another week. I thought it was long, but she said they were waiting for the sausage to get done. I had all three pigs done, but because they were small, I just had a roast off of each ham, the back straps, and then ground the rest. I had them make me 10 pounds of Italian, and the rest made into breakfast sausage. I've only tried that piece of back strap and the breakfast sausage so far. It's extremely lean and tastes great. It's probably expensive as far as pork is concerned, but we're probably set for a while. It's a fun thing to do. What the hell, it's only money. If you only knew what I'm getting ready to fork out to the governments, this money is like a grain of sand on a beach.

Hope it get's worked out as I really liked the place and would love to go back. Hopefully the issue's were mistakes and not intentional.
Dan, I'm sorry to hear there were issues you had to contend with. I hope everything comes out OK as Id like to be back there next year too...it was a grand time!
Ditto. Was a great getaway, and appreciate it takes some selfless legwork to get it arranged for all, so whatever we can do (or not do) that's helpful please let it be known.
Have a suspicion it was that damn vegetable-and-gourd-based adult beverage being passed off as "beer" that's the issue. That'll get you kicked out of a right proper establishment, alright. Blasphemers and philistines.
p.s.shipping was steep, but hey, the meat is great and the trip was memorable good fun.
Mine were delicious. so good that the wife, who adores her father who in turn loves wild game, gave all the meat to hi. so I do not get to taste the gamut of various ways to marinate and stir fry wild pig in different Cambodian dishes. Maybe next year.
Thanks again guys for tolerating my family and treating them so well. I have a green light to go hunting because of you.
Dan, sounds great from here too! Thanks AGAIN for doing the footwork on these hunts! Weather notwithstanding the 2016 hunt was a roaring success I'd say!
Ok just a heads up the price of poker or should I say porker has gone up Just a heads up so you can prepare if you should still chose to attend Same gig as last year arrive Wendsay afternoon hunt Thurday -Saturday and leave Sunday morning.3 hogs per hunter one extra hog is allowed at an additional $100. Cost is $950 per hunter tips for guide and staff are extra and I will post a minimum amount that should be paid. Normal price for this package is $1100 check the website as Kevin has raised the prices of his hunts. Should anyone find this too steep and chose not to come I understand but have no doubt we will be full at 26 hunters again next March
I know it's early but if you are planning on attending the 2017 hog hunt just post that you are planning on attending so I have and idea of what regulars are planning on coming
Let's plan as last hunt. We here certainly enjoyed the visit. Hope the others do to. Come early if you want.
Ed thanks mucho! However...Im probably going to be driving down ( so I can take home some meat!) and am entertaining doing another hunt while Im down there on another ranch. Will keep you posted.Might do a combination of things just so I can crash at your place when the others are there!

Dates?
I've always wanted to attend.
Might need to see if I can get the time scheduled off of work.
I'll plan on it, but will have to play by ear. being self employed i have no idea what work i will have going on this far out, plus i might be spending sometime up north with Leighton doing some commercial fishing.
You can put anything in Carl's hands and he can shoot it better than well....
Funny you mention that, Poobs.
Last weekend, I was teaching a class, and trying to make a point that a good shooter will shoot well with whatever firearm you hand him.
All the while I was trying to illustrate the point, I had the mental image of my friend Ready shooting everything under the sun and shooting it very well, and all I could muster for words was:
"The magic is in the Magician, it ain't in the wand."
Modesty, my friends, forbids me to not set the record straight.
Being handed bespoke guns, like Pats AR, Ingwes McFlame or the Tides HK 45, a gun I might add, you can send out on patrol by itself and it will have the beat straighted out by sunup, helps a lot.
But, Docs double 9,3x74R and Tracy's AR 15, guns that have straightend out buffalo in Docs hands and Tracy would control any third world airfield with his, I made a solid fool out of myself with. Had a great time though. :-)
Thanks for your kind words - this pupil is a learner, still.
