I asked this question in the Rural Living forum but it's fairly quiet and zero replies.

Does anyone know about John Deere tractors made in Germany?

Basically, how do they compare with Iowa made JD's?

Tractor in question is a 6140M.

Thanks for any input.

We havent seen alot problems with them. Alot of the hay growers are using them.
My uncle has a 5325 at his place...can't recall if those are made in Germany or the India plant? Either way, it has been a VERY solid little machine.
I tried doing a little research on-line and didn't find much of anything.

People did say to stay away from the D series which is made in Mexico.

I used to work at a JD dealership. My advise would be to see if service is available and parts availability (any differences?) along with warranty info. JD is known for having all that wrapped up tight. News to me about German made ones. Not sure the advantage to having a German built one though. The cost of shipping it over here when they are built here too seems like an unnecessary extra expense to me.
I see quite a few of them around here. Nothing too scary to report but I highly suggest bringing the S/N to a dealer for a parts and service check.

If I recall (been a few years) some of the hard parts like transmission housings and such were a bit hard to cross but all the parts were available with a good parts man.
Thanks guys.

There are bunch of 6140M's for sale on the internet so it must be a fairly common tractor but unlike the (older)Iowa tractor it's hard to get an idea how 'good' they are.

You know the 40 and 70 series tractors are fine but something foreign made has us slightly concerned. Imagine it's all metric which is no big deal.

We'd like to trade into a low hour 4255, 7410, 7320, etc. but they are hard to find in our neck of the woods.

And we'll only buy local so that rules out all the internet finds.
I've got a 2155 made in West Germany, a great small tractor that has performed for 28 years. I know it doesn't answer your question...

Yes, 6140M is assembled in Germany. Parts and service is available at your local dealership. Parts are available machined down or stock order (no freight charge stock ordering parts)
Sam,

I know nothing about the German JD's, but I recently bought one made in India(?). Just heard that recently.

In our locale, there are some crazy deals. The local JD dealership leased several hundred of these out to farmers last year. Guys sucked them up fast and they were leased up before many even heard about the deal. The lease terms were one year, up too 300 hours use, for a total lease payment of $300. That's not a misprint.

The tractors were new and were listed at $21,000ish before the lease deal. Once they came back off lease last month, they were available for purchase at $13,000 through the dealership. I jumped on one a friend had. The tractor had 16 hours and had been kept inside all year. He'd used it to haul tobacco on trailers to the barn.

It may not be much as a true "farm" tractor, but I like it for my needs. It's my new bush hogging driveway grading food plot fun machine!

I'm not really good at this, but wouldn't that be Johannes Hirsch?

I work with an online auction company and it's a buyers market right now. If you're seriously looking for a late model tractor there are some real steals out there and it looks to be getting worse.

Hell, it oughta be. They've been seriously overpriced for years. On the used ones it makes one wonder where they all go since there are less real farmers every year. Of course some of the guys around here seem to have a tractor for every implement they've got and you'll see these old bastards at sales sayin', "that's just going too cheap" right before they start bidding on their fifteenth tractor.

The prices are all over the place. I don't know what you've got to trade, but I'd consider buying one outright and having it shipped. You might save enough to justify just keeping the old iron. When you've got a $20k, price variance...that's a lot.
Just me - but I wouldn't be afraid of it..

When I was stationed in Germany I remember riding by a HUGE John Deere factory
I SELL THESE TRACTORS FOR A LIVING AND I CAN'T SAY ENOUGH GOOD ABOUT THEM.THE M AND R SERIES ARE BOTH MADE IN GERMANY AND IF THERE IS A BETTER TRACTOR I HAVE NOT SEEN IT.GOOD POWER,WEIGHT,SERVICE AVAILABILITY ETC.OF COURSE SOMEONE WILL SAY OVER PRICED OR SHOULD BUY ANOTHER COLOR SO ON AND SO ON BUT THEY ARE OUTSTANDING.
I won't hesitate to buy one as long as your local dealer can support it with parts and repairs. You might ask your question at tractorbynet.com. Lots of knowledgeable tractor people over there.
theres a number of JD models been built in Germany , most all good machines from what I gather

if you find one you want , run a search on agtalk machinery board.....chances are the subject's been beat to death

not looking for anything but Deere ? my loader tractor is a 8560 NH....has been one helluva workhorse , and the easiest starting diesel in cold weather Ive ever seen

if it were me , I would avoid anything new enough to have installed emissions equipment on the motor....a DPF is not gonna like chore work and those cold Mont winter days

That is incredible! For some perspective, I can't rent a piece of equipment for one day with 8 hours run time for much less than that. $300 for a year? Really?
tractordata.com will show where the various models were made. I have no knowledge of German tractors. I think all of mine were made in the US but the some of the engines may have come from Mexico. Mine are all old, from a 1952 B to a 1975 4430. Talk to your JD dealer's service department about models to avoid.
it seems that buying foreign made John Deere products is just another way to approve of losing thousands of American jobs, of helping skew America's balance of trade.
if buying a very late model tractor of modest size you literally have no choice....they are all made overseas

then shame on John Deere.
Thank you for all of the good replies.

Very useful information.

We actually drove down and looked at the tractor this afternoon.
(closest dealer is 45 miles away)

2013 with 4500 hours.

The hours part scared me. 4500 hours on a 10 year old tractor is great, that many on one 3 years old not so much.

Cutting edge on the bucket had been replaced with a bolt on, grapple brackets on both side had been re-welded, one of the 3-point arm(extensions) was welded so it couldn't slide out.

Various plastics pieces were broke/cracked.

And that's the real shame. Price goes up, amount of plastic goes up.

It was a really nice tractor and the dealer is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet but....

It was fairly well used.
Around here, lots of tractors with quite a few hours were leased to the state to mow road edges. When they come in off lease, they usually put a loader on them and sell them. Some of them still have a little warranty left. My neighbor bought a Case IH like that a few years ago and it was a pretty good tractor. My concern is that every Tom, Dick and Harry has been driving it and they might not care how they treat it.

His new Case IH, Maxxum 125, was made in England. I've put about 150 hours on it hauling big bales and mowing pastures with a 20' brush hog. Other than being an electronic nightmare, it is a good, tough tractor. It has lots of plastic parts, one of which I broke when I ran over a log! My old JD 4430 doesn't have that problem.

Damn - that's 4 hours a day, EVERY day for 3 years. Well used indeed.

My 2010 CaseIH 70 Farmall was made in Turkey, so shame on CaseIH?
My brother just bought a 70a. The dealer said no tractor under 150hp is made in the U.S.
I think the last real Waterloo tractor might be a 7430 Premium. They are 4-5 years older than the German tractor we looked today but are still another $10-20K in price.

No tractor under 100 hp has been made in the US for a long time.......
Maybe they are up to 150 now.

Somewhat related,
I bought a GMC Suburban brand new.
At 4000 miles the rear end puked.
At my local dealer I learned that day that they were made in Mexico when the shop foreman told me....."this happens a lot. Those Mexicans don't know how to set up a rear end".

It was my fault for not knowing, btw.
Haven't had a lick of trouble with it since, though.
A JD dealer told me, back in 1980, that all JD's under a certain hsp (can't remember now) were made in Japan and all JD's over that hsp were made in Germany. Don't know how true it was then or what may or may not have changed since, just saying, that's what a JD dealer told me in 1980.
Sam, buying tractors is getting harder. The post I put up about the 2640 JD which is 34 years old and made in Germany yielded nothing. By the way I live where they are made in Iowa and would not worry about one made offshore

The farm I used to manage had a JD 2950 from 1986 that was German. When they closed the farm in 2009, it had something in the neighborhood of 5000 hrs and had given us no problems. It wasn't our biggest but it got a lot of use. No loader work though.

It even survived some dummy (me!) who opened the front cap because he thought it was low on coolant and added some. Trouble was the front cap was the fuel tank, it sat in front of the radiator. Adding antifreeze to diesel fuel on a cold day clogs the fuel filter real quick!

I'd say.. Your description raises some red flags with me also.. As another said, it's very possible there's been many operators who seem not to care about protecting the machine from damage..

I hope the price reflects the condition and hours - and then some..
I had an old Mannheim German JD 2030 Diesel tractor, IIRC it was 60 HP, had a nice JD 175 loader and a JD 709 brush hog, it was a fine little tractor, very handy and dependable for light farm work.

Sold it to a banker buddy of mine 10 years ago, he's still running it.
I think if looking for a JD loader tractor myself I would look for a 7410/20 or 7510/20 and rebuild as needed or if needed....there's a reason they bring a premium

I don't like the sound of all the welding done on 3 point and loader of the 6140
I've got an old 1968 5020 with quads on back and a 300 Horse 619 Turbo Diesel with a 16 disc brass pulling clutch in it, talking about black smoke easy fun. grin

Dad bought this 6400 with a 640 loader new in 1996 and it is used almost daily since then. Made in Germany. It is less HP than the 6140M, but no complaints.

Sam,

According to my local JD dealer, John Deere has been importing the running gear and some complete tractors from Germany for over forty years for some of it's tractor line because they couldn't keep up with the demand here for the mid-class tractors and the German factory had the capacity, so it was a win-win for them and the consumers here.

Personally, I'm an orange paint kinda guy. grin

Ed
The Deere Mannheim plant has been in operation since 1956 and before Deere had it, they were producing Lanz tractor there.

And yes, many (not all models) of those tractors have been being imported into the US for many decades.

Went to a tractor/truck show put on by the diesel club at the semi-local tech school. Show was a bust, probably due to rain but I saw this and thought of you SamO.

When you buy one....they send you a 'Hitler Hat'!!
Thanks again for all the good info, I did not realize JD had been making tractors over there for that long.

SD, a 7520 would be about ideal, wish the local place would get one in!

And speaking of German, we spent 6 hours yesterday and 3 hours this morning working on a 1985 Spra Coupe with a little liquid cooled VW engine.

The fuel atomizer heating element(below the intake/carb) had shorted out and apparently cooked the fuel enough that the float stuck(open).

One of those things where there are more issues than one initially thinks.

Long story short, pain in the ass.

Oh, and a new carb was gonna be $3500....

And the Coupe might be worth $2500.....grin

New set of plugs and she'll fire up now!
