My beautiful niece lost her battle with cancer that started as a small lesion on her skin. earlier detection would have made a difference. this wonderful girl was only 45 years old. Please don't ignore this killer. Melanoma can be cured if caught early.
Ah hell Tom I’m sorry to hear this. Life can sure be the chits at times. I don’t know if it’s true; but I’ve heard it said, that when you meet again in the happy hunting ground, it’s like you’ve been apart only a few hours. Sure hope it’s that way.
the most beautiful flames always go out to soon. our hearts will be forever broken and the family are launching a campaign of awareness. i pray no one here has the same heartbreak. unpublished studies shared with us this week show that those of her generation are more at risk because of different factors . also there is a genetic test for a specific mutated gene one can have that reveals the greater risk .

Condolences...melanoma is something we around here are acutely aware of.
Sorry for your loss - condolences and prayers sent for the soul of thet beautiful young lady, and her family.
Yes, everyone - keep an eye out for changes in moles, differences in spots, new spots, anything different!
I, personally, see the dermatologist annually - and have pre-cancerous lesions frozen off. this regimen will become bi-annual at some point, but I'm still doing well enough that once yearly is fine. Thank God, I was seen early, and am seen regularly! Prevention is best, but maintenance is the next best!
My dermatologist told my grandson, at one visit, to take care - as most skin cancers are propagated between the ages of 12 and 24 - news to me!

I’m sorry to hear of your loss. She was beautiful. And cancer sucks.
Sorry to hear this. I was at the dermatologist yesterday for my semi-annual checkup. Had two places frozen, and have to go back in 6 weeks to have them check it again, and possibly do a biopsy on it. Never gave it a second thought all those years I'd be working outside and pull my shirt off, although most of my places are where the "farmers tan" is. Skin cancer can be a mean booger.
My brother got all the girls while growing up. But he had a small bald spot on his head, where no hair would ever grow, about the size of a quarter. He was vain about his appearance , and that vanity may have saved his life. He kept asking his doctor about methods of growing hair, transplants, ect, until he was sent to a specialist. That specialist found something suspicious, and sent him to another specialist who realized what that bald spot really was (a form of cancer that can lay dormant or spread very quickly.) It was discovered on a Tuesday, and cut out by Thursday of the same week. The bald spot was reduces to the size of a dime in the process. He had had it for several years. It was tested after removal. Benign.
I have to get myself back to the dermo, been a sun junky and roof monkey for too many years. I was always "that guy" that went into every store without a shirt on. White boy that looked like I was from Calcutta. So far just had small benigners froze off
Last summer I had an upper body checkup. They did a biopsy on a spot on my arm that was nothing. They found a squamous cell cancer in my ear. They were able to remove it easily. Melanoma is far more serious, though.
I felt an odd squishy lump on the back of my neck. Felt like a blister. Claudia said it was dark red. Our family doctor removed it as a precaution and sent it in. Turned out to be a melanoma and he sent me to a specialist immediately. The skin doc did some more excavation. That was in August of 2016
Then he said, "If you had ignored this until Christmas, I'd have been advising you to make a will."
Since then, I've developed a carcinoma and had that plus several pre-cancerous spots frozen or removed. I'm now down from skin checks every six weeks to every six months, and that will continue indefinitely. By the way, Utah has the highest rate of skin cancer of any state. They think it's a combination of the high altitude and lots of outdoor sports. I suspect mine was from high altitude in a jet. The only place on me not covered was the back of my neck, and that bubble canopy let in a lot of strong sunlight.
You and your family have my sincere condolences and my prayers.
My Mom died of Melanoma.
Rocky, and anyone else here who has skin cancer, get yourself to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. They are the ones who developed the immunotherapy for Melanoma and the care at that hospital has to be seen to be believed. It is like no other medical facility I've ever been in.
Some years ago I read about a big increase in skin cancer in farmers. It started when chemical companies started handing out free ball caps. Farmers quit wearing broad brimmed hats and the ear and neck cancers skyrocketed.
You and your family have my sincere condolences and my prayers.

can't endorse this enough! also there is a specialist there that discovered the mutated gene that determines your ability to fight off cancer with your own immune system. Both my niece and her mother have/had that mutated gene. My sister in law, Krista's mother, has been battling one type or the other of cancer for 20 years.
I'm very sorry for your loss, and you have my condolences..
My wife is a women's cancer nurse - and just a few days ago told me about two of her surgeon's patients that died; and both were under 45 years old.. I don't know how she does her job some days, but she's been on that job for over 30 years..
That's heart wrenching. This reminds me of the story of one of my favorite singers of all time- Eva Cassidy. She had a skin issue that no one suspected and took her way too early at around 28 I believe. Eva's singing tunes with your lovely niece right now buddy.
My condolences deerstalker, melanoma is very deadly if not caught early. I had a melanoma removed almost 30 years ago when I was 21 years old, doctor thought I would have been dead within a year and half if they hadn't removed it when they did. My doctor noticed it during a routine exam and said we ought to remove it and have it checked. I thank God that he did.
My condolences to you and your extended family. I lost a cousin to melanoma also. She passed at a very your age. If I recall, she was around 24. May you have HIS spirit with you and may you feel of HIS love and comfort.

peddler, i hadn't thought of Eva for years. was one of my top list singers. bright flames go out to soon.
So young and stunningly beautiful...she's just 2 months older than my wife. Very sad. Please accept my condolences to your and yours at what must be a heart wrenching time. I applaud your efforts to spread awareness despite your grief. Godspeed.
Skin cancer runs in my wife’s family, so I’m a bit paranoid. I’ve been to the dermatologist 4 or 5 times now whenever one of my many moles or skin tabs goes wonky. So far, so good
This stuff is nothing to mess around with.
Thanks for your post as a reminder to all. Caught early, it is generally curable. Again, so sorry for your family’s loss at such an early age, especially.
I'm also sorry to hear about your family's loss. Tragic don't even come close. I had a Melanoma when I turned 40. Eight weeks of chemo and a couple shots of radiation and I was declared cancer free and got a rubber yellow bracelet for all of the puking and endless headaches, but my kiddos still have their dad. They give me the once over every year and freeze anything that looks suspicious. It's not always obvious. Those little spots don't always jump out at you. I got lucky. Again,y'all have my sincerest condolences.
Gosh what a terrible thing. I'm very sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful lady. My heart goes out to you and yours.
Since moving from the far north to the desert southwest this has been one of those issues that absolutely terrifies me. I don't set foot outside without a hat and a good slathering of sunscreen. I harp on my wife and daughter all the time about sun exposure. My daughter in particular has skin a shade or two lighter than a glass of milk and doesn't take long to burn. But she doesn't listen. Despite her aunt having been diagnosed with melanoma just a couple years ago. This is one of those things that people just don't take very seriously but should.
Wear a hat, not a cap. Long sleeve shirts. Sun block on face and hands. Throw those shorts away.
Having said that , my good friend ,while he wears a hat, still wears shorts and short sleeve shirts while we fish in the blazing summer sun. Every six months he goes to a dermatologist to have the pre-cancerous spots removed.
Colon cancer took my SIL three years after the birth of her first child after trying for over ten years to conceive. One of the sweetest people I’ve ever met and battled it like the fiercest warrior to ever walk the earth.
