The Livingston gun show is this weekend, I went early Friday with a couple friends and when I got there, I was told about a Winchester low wall that was stamped "W.F. Sheard, Livingston, Montana." I looked at it and it is an original half round half octagon in 22 Long. Not many of those around and the bore is shiney, so I bought it. Gophers are only a month away from seeing the wrong end of the Winchester...

How are you planning to mount the 6x Super Chicken and which reticle? whistle

I don't see where the extended clip goes? 😀

Not much into old Winchesters but a rifle like that at a decent price would probably follow me home too.

Neat rifle.

We have mostly antiqued Remington 783,s in .270 at gunshows here.
And osprey optics tables.....

That is a nice find though.

Can you still find 22 longs?
Posted By: Oldman03 Re: Livingston Gun Show - 02/03/19
Gene, I googled it and they are still available..... but they are pricey.

I dont remember the last time I saw any in a store.

I have seen CCI longs on the shelf recently, about the same price as shorts or CB's.
Posted By: woodmaster81 Re: Livingston Gun Show - 02/03/19
I bought a couple boxes of Longs during The Great Scarcity but haven't seen any since. These were added to several other boxes of Longs I picked up here and there over the years. My old Remington single shot shoots them better than Shorts though the Marlin 39 chokes on anything other than Long Rifles.

I've been tempted by a couple of Winder muskets in 22 Short in the last few years but couldn't justify the $1200 asking price in part due to having very little 22 Short ammo available. I picked up a couple bricks of 22 Shorts since but those Winders are now gone. Figures.

I have quite a few. I have a Winchester 1873 in 22 Long and stockpiled ammo for that...

I like the way you put old rifles to work, looking forward to the pics.

I heard these were the original Creedmoors.

Shrapnel,

Nice Rifle!

Does "W.F. Sheard" have special significance? Was that the name of a business?

Shrapnel

That low wall with the Sheard markings would look a lot better in my gun case next to my 1899 303 also with Sheard markings Tacoma, Wa. Looked at a 32 Low wall last week. Bore was extremely poor and wood damage on the forearm. Had to pass on it. GW

William F. Sheard was a Montana Territorial gunsmith who was located in Livingston Montana Territory from 1884-1895. He then moved to Tacoma, Washington. He patented a unique front sight for rifles. He later sold the patent to Marble Gunsight Co.

I have several other Sheard marked guns; 1876 Winchester 45-75, 1886 Winchester 40-65 and a Marlin 1889 44-40...

I didn't know they made a rimfire 1873, of course, there's a lot of things I don't know I guess.

No loading gate in the side-plate, is there a removable magazine tube or some such?
Posted By: shrapnel Re: Livingston Gun Show - 02/04/19

The 22 rimfire isn't often found in these older guns and when you do find them, they are usually 22 short. Both of these guns being 22 long is the fun part of owning them. Another thing you will never find in an old 22 rimfire, is a good bore. Both of these have bright bores, which is more rare than finding the gun.

This is a picture of the 22 Long 1873 and the magazine that pulls out of the magazine tube...
