The only way to gain any balance in accountability, through a monetary penalty, is to have all, or a large percentage, of the award come from the Police Department Retirement Fund.

It may be an old fashioned idea that others like to bash but I would like to think of the local police force as “our cops” - that we take pride in and support to do a difficult job

There is talk of requiring cops to carry their individual insurance here and I believe this goes toward the direction of putting them on the other side of the fence as us vs them.

However if I as a cop had to do a traffic stop, knowing the potential threats out there I would be glad for all of my use of force training and knowing that the department, city, county or state had my back.
