I'm going to buy a new squirrel/coyote shooter next week.
I have a ton of .223 ammo, so that will be the caliber of choice.
I'm looking at a Remington 700 sps stainless, heavy fluted barrel, with a Stocky's laminated thumbhole stock and and an affordable scope with perhaps mildots and maybe aTimney trigger.
It's squirrels and coyotes...not Stone Sheep and Brown Bears, so if I miss I'm not getting foreclosed on....🤣
Can I tap into the 24 HRCF brain trust?
Is the stock too gawdy?...
Harry...that stock .....uhhhhh...no. Good choice on the rifle though, and the trigger!
Make sure you get a fast twist, 1:8 or better, so you can shoot heavier bullets.
Get a rifle with a modern barrel twist and a trigger you don’t have to change
Tikka would be my choice
how far ya gonna carry it ?
that 700 Varmint is gonna be 10+ pounds scoped..........
that 700 Varmint is gonna be 10+ pounds scoped..........
Mostly riding around in a truck....not a mountain rifle.
Gawdy? Yes
But, if you like it, why would you care what anyone else thinks?
Any affordable scope recommendations?
No Nightforce or Schmitt and Benders...🤣

I got a stock that I personally painted that would look sooo good on your SPS. 😎

As little as possible

look for a 20" truck gun...........Ruger American maybe......
or......22" SS Tikka.......
That 700 with a 24" tube will suck riding around in your truck.....

If weight isn't a factor ( and it seems it isn't...) Try a Burris FFII 4.5-14...lotsa deals available on them. Good sturdy scope.
Not a Remington fan .
But if ya like it.
Get it.
no but a hell fugg no on that crazy blue laminate stock.
6x or 10x swfa?
here ya go.......Ruger......uses AR mags........10 rd or more......
threaded barrel......good trigger (clip off one spring coil)
Glade Tactical makes a kool over sized bolt handle
Rattle can the stock for your color choice........

Perfect California rifle.... I couldn't resist
I'd get a CZ 527 keep the set trigger, then change the stock if you want
1:8 twist Tikka T3, SWFA scope. Even BS had to have one.....
Yes....That Burris is a good scope.
Trigger Tech is my current favorite.
Why not have a fancy stock?
Slow twist is fine.
Make yourself happy.
With how it looks, shoots, and what it wears!
It's hard to go wrong when buying a new rifle.
I have a .223 Weatherby Vanguard 2 in synthetic but I believe it is 1-9 twist. Shoots 62 grain fine, 75 grain not so good. I think it was under $600 shipped. Have a 3.5 X 10 Zeiss on it. Very accurate.

I expected that 100%...🤣

And then there is Savage rifles.
Gawdy? Yes

Exactly, WGAF whether others like it. If you do, go for it.
I have a number of mcmillans that have some blue, red, and other unconventional colors. They’re mostly PD and coyote rifles. I like em and don’t ask or care if others like them.
As for the rifle, I’ve had very good luck with many Rem 700s.
Thomas Magnum had a stockys laminate, I think the color was Desert. It looked pretty flashy, but using pretty natural colors. I think his was a 25-06, and more of a classic stock.
not sure if they offer the thumbhole in desert.
you know what you want, get it.
Tikkanut is right on if you want a shooter that fits in your truck, and save you money for another trip.
Trigger Tech and skip the Timney.
The SWFA 10x Mil Quad reticle is really good stuff on colony varmints.
If you want a pretty baby blue pimp rifle to do your road hunting, just go for it. We wont laugh.
Will we?????
Get a 1in 8 twist, load 62 Barnes, they will blow through a big pig shoulders at 200 yards. You could deer hunt with it in a jam with that bullet. If you like the stock, put it on there.
Get a rifle with a modern barrel twist and a trigger you don’t have to change
Tikka would be my choice
Yes that over a Remington
I love remingtons, and I like those stainless sps rifles.
I've got one in a plain boyds stock.
The heavy barrell with mild recoil.. prone in the dirt... all day long... YES
SWFA scope... 6 xor 10x

There is a difference, and it matters.

Call James and order a trued receiver from him, along with his 'nut and lug...with a 1-7" spout. Then get Redhawk on the horn and go Terrain/M5 DBM and cut to the [bleep] chase.
hint.................
I think that stainless Remington in that blue and grey laminated stock will look awesome. May want to check Natchez shooters supply they had some Weaver closeout scopes that would work great
Fubar approves...
I'd get a CZ 527 keep the set trigger, then change the stock if you want

Sal, if you were to do a Northland Shooters Supply build, I've got the tools and gauges and would be happy to screw it together for you.
Can't see you being a dbm guy, but the build Stick is describing would be incredibly fun for you and great for a CA compliant truck gun.
I think the stock is cool, but it's not to some folks' tastes. The Remington wouldn't be my choice. My vote is for the Tikka. Ya can't go wrong with a Leupold scope.
If you want a pretty baby blue pimp rifle to do your road hunting, just go for it. We wont laugh.

I have thousands of acres of private land to hunt coyotes and squirrels on.
Calling me a road hunter just makes you look stupid.
Unless Remington has changed they are 12 twist in .223. I had one. I still have the barrel. it shot pretty good. I put a Shilen 12 tw and chambered it for 220 Beggs Russian. It's about the same thing but shoots great with 52 &55 gr bullets.

Sorry you are having a bad day and didn't recognize my post as a joke, even though I posted not one but three "laughing" moji's. Hope things perk up for you tomorrow.
FWIW, I have shot thosands of prairie dogs out my truck window or off my hood or tailgate.
Winchester ultralight with a trigger job and a silencer.

I apologize...sarcasm don't play well on the internet.
I often get called thin skinned...but gaddamn...we are attacked constantly as Californians....regardless if we are just like you.

Hey, lets not worry about it, we gotta stick togather. My wife was born and raised in Susanville, and lived in Bieber for a few years after marrying her first husband. We returned to Susanville after I retired from the AF, we lived there for three years while I attended gunsmith school at the college there. I was instrumental is getting the BLM to donate land there in Rice Canyon and in building the range there. I shot the first ever metallic silhouette match at Hat Creek range. Our daughter and family still live in Janesville. I was stationed in Sacramento for eight years before that. I am familiar with Northern California and some of the fine folks who live there.
Having said that, living now in the West, I am sick and tired of California snowflakes moving to Idaho, Oregon, Arizona, Wyoming etc and as soon as they get there they go to work changing their new place into the place they just fled from. I dont think I am alone in this opinion.
Boise area mid 80's
Same place 2016
And this in NO way covers every small town Idaho state wide, or all the farm land that is now 5 acre parcels
Before you buy that Remington, confirm the twist rate.
If it works for your stockpile of ammo... great!
I love Remingtons but on second thought... a 1/7 twist White Oak Armament in a ar15 set up SPR... oh my!
Is there a specific reason you are not going with an AR ?
1-9 ortta shoot to 75 grains if you wanna shoot 80 get a 243.. IDK but read faster twists for the military is because of tracers

Thank you.
I've been on your side since the day I joined the fire.
That was very well written and thank you for taking the time to write it.
We are on the same team.
Forego "new"..
PM Shrap, get a sako riihimaki 222 heavy barrel. He'll probably have a line on one.
Go to a cheap walmart remington or weatherby vanguard. Run it up to pac-nor have them true action and appy barrel of your choice/design. Twist it to shoot the heaviest barnes bullet you want to shoot. Drop it in whatever stock you like and go kill [bleep]. Being as you are in nor cal it cant be more than a days drive to Brookings and there are worst things then a day at the coast.
Dont forget to post pix of your new rifle.
S hitcan that POS stock!!
Forget the Remington and the hideous stock. Buy a CZ 527, new ones have 1 in 9 twist and the rifle is scaled to small cartridges.
https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/736676180196Ruger precision comes in under a thousand. Worth a look.
You’re taking a long way around the barn if you’re looking for a pasture poodle shooter/truck gun
Shoot it with the ammo you’re likely to use, see how it does and then go from there...
If weight doesn't matter the RPR would be one to look at. Opens lots of doors.
An AR isn't a bad route to go either.
Ruger American's are decent for the $.
For me, a light to sporter weight stainless bolt action is my favorite and I have no interest if it isn't twisted fast enough to shoot long 75's. My preference would be to wait on Barrett to put the .223 Fieldcraft out but I like light weight.
For affordable optics it's really hard to beat SWFA's SS scopes. Several different power ranges to choose from, the 6x and 10x are the most bang for the $ anywhere.
That 700 with a 24" tube will suck riding around in your truck.....
It's worse than that...it's a 26".
